Well considering Buffy is a better show, I highly recommend it.
But to answer your question you don't have to. However, there are crossover episodes in S1 of Angel that deal with events from Buffy, so if you don't want to be lost on what's happening, you should watch S1-S4 of Buffy. S1-S3 will help to build your understanding of the characters and relationships with Angel, and there are also events in S4 that tie into a few of the crossover episodes.
So while you technically don't have to, I highly recommend it. If anything just for the fact that Buffy is an amazing show, and as good as Angel is, Buffy is even better IMO.
Starting with S2 though, Angel becomes its own show, and there isn't anymore crossover episodes.

So for maximum enjoyment, watch Buffy, then Angel?
I wont be able to just watch s1-s4, if I start with a show I'll watch to the end. I cant help it.
Thanks ryan!

I highly recommend signing up for Netflix.
They have every movie/TV show imaginable on DVD. You can get the first month trial for 10 bucks, and you get 3 movies at a time. You can start watching Buffy that way. Then after the first month, it only goes up to 20. That is only if you get the 3 at a time plan. They also have cheaper deals for 1 and 2 movies at a time. Hell, they even have a 4 movie at a time deal, which I was thinking about doing, but I figured 3 was enough.. LOL
Since I am busy, I usually go through 3 DVD's every 1-2 weeks. If I could find more time, I could probably get through 2 rounds of Netflix a week. But no matter how hard I try, it always seems to take me at least 1-2 weeks to get through 3 DVD's.. LOL
I highly recommend watching both Buffy and Angel. Buffy is probably my second favorite show after Quantum Leap. It is amazing. It is also a really fun show to make music videos for as well.

I have netflix, and its the greatest thing since the invention of velcro. I love it. Buffy/Angel is on the queue after Nip/Tuck. Are you a fan of that?

Been watching Nip/Tuck on TV since the Pilot. Best season is still S1 and the show has gone down a bit each season. But this last season (S4) was the second best season they have done. They got back to what made the show great.

Im psyched for it. I hope that since im going to be a new fan of Buffy/Angel, that the desire to discuss the show isnt gone on these forums. Being able to discuss your love for a show with other fans worldwide, makes enjoying the show 10x more fun.

i watched angel first. then i watched buffy. then i re-watched certain angel episodes, and it did make more sense (especially the season 5 episode with andrew). so i would recommend watching them together as they were intended (start watching angel season 1 when you begin buffy season 4), as they do cross over from time to time.

I would say, you would have to watch the first three seasons of Buffy to be up to speed, because Angel is kind of a continuation of those three years. I mean sure you could watch Angel without watching Buffy, but you won't get all the nuances and hidden meanings concerning the core characters, especially Angel, Cordy and Wesley, if you haven't watched the first three seasons of Buffy. Their development had begun during those first three years of Buffy and have continued during the Angel years, so yeah, I would recomend you watch the first three seasons of Buffy!
When the 2 shows seperated, buffy was written in such a way that you could fully understand and enjoy it without ever watching angel, but angel was written full of references to buffy, it was assumed that every one who has seen angel has also seen buffy, but not the other way around. Buffy characters were crossing over to angel all the time, but the only angel character to ever go back to buffy was angel himself.
Season 6 of buffy and season 3 of angel (set during the same time) are the only seasons of those shows with no crossovers either way.
I never watched Buffy but still fully enjoyed Angel.

Oh, how did I miss this?
I liked Angel better. Personal preference, of course. I know plenty of people who think BtVS was the better show, while others think AtS was the better show. I don't say which one is better, because they were both great. But AtS was the one I became obsessed with, and is the one I'm more likely to watch now.
Do you have to watch BtVS to enjoy AtS?
I don't think so. I know plenty of big AtS fans who only saw a few (if any) BtVS episodes.
But, like others have said, you'll understand more about the characters of Angel, Cordy, and Wes if you watch them on seasons 1 through 3 of BtVS. There character arcs sort of started on BtVS and, by watching that show, you fully understand just how far they've all developed by seasons 2 and 3 of AtS.
Of course, if you go in only intending to watch seasons 1 through 3 of BtVS, you might get hooked.

I would watch Buffy season 1 - 3 alone. And then watch Buffy 4 - 7 and Angel 1-5 together. Like match up the episodes. Because some storylines did carry over, however you won't be confused if you watch just one or the other.
And I never watched Angel, and I enjoyed Buffy. I only watched Season 3/4 of Angel...

if you've never seen buffy, there are a couple eps (especially season 1) where some references will be lost on you, but Angel can stand alone.
seasons 1-3 of buffy will introduce you to the characters you see on angel, and there are only 3 eps that are crossovers in season one of angel (which was season 4 of Buffy).
there are some other eps of Angel that reference Buffy happenings or characters, but if you've seen seasons 1-3, you can pretty much handle it. it's not a pre-req IMO, but it helps.
season 3 of buffy was on sale at walmart last week for $20.

Personally I think Angel is the better show, it certainly ended in more satisfying manner than Buffy did. Not Fade Away was literally the perfect ending... it just blew me away. Angel as a show always stayed true itself even with network interference, I always felt that BtVs sold out in its last two seasons. Too much focus upon Spike, various character assassinations and crappy arcs.
You don't need to watch Buffy to enjoy Angel. I do think Angel is more rewarding if you are willing to really invest in it. Its also beneficial to go into it not thinking Buffy is better, because it isn't in a lot of ways. The writing on Angel is stronger and is definitely not as childish as Buffy... the characters aren't as black and white either. There is a lot more moral ambiguity in Angel and it also has some very noiry elements to it - especially the first episode. Buffy has more episodes and several episodes that are technically much better ie the musical episode, silent episode etc. yet I don't think overall Buffy is as good as Angel.
Angels seasons are more interconnected, they often set up the events of the next couple of seasons. Whereas Buffy's season are self contained and generally tie everything up once the season is finished. The continuity between Angels season 2-4 is quite brilliant IMO. And season 5 of Angel is just the best season of Buffy/Angelverse ever... it rivals season 3 of Buffy and beats it by a mile. Truly brilliant television.

Straight up answer - NO! I only became a fan of Buffy AFTER I watched ANGEL. Angel is - IMO - a much darker and more enjoyable show. Buffy's still good, but Angel will always be the one I came into the 'verse on.

I won't voice an opinion on which show is superior. That's mostly because I can't decide. I keep going back and forth. I probably enjoyed Buffy more for the most part, but there are a lot of possible explanations for that, which actually brings me to the main point of this thread.
I watched Angel before I watched Buffy. That wasn't a decision I made. I knew very little about either series before catching a few random episodes of Angel on TNT. I watched it because I have insomnia, and I'm regularly up at 3, 4, 5 in the morning, when nothing is on TV except for Angel on TNT. :)
By chance, they were season 1 episodes I saw. I enjoyed them very much right away, but didn't get hooked right off the bat. Next time I saw anything was season 3. That was good too. I didn't start watching/TiVoing until Season 5 was on. So I watched the show pretty darn inconsistently, but still enjoyed it a lot and figured out what was going on.
Going back and watching Buffy, I'm seeing how much MORE I'd have enjoyed it had I watched Buffy first, and moreover, watched season 4 of Buffy together with Season 1 of Angel.
So, do you HAVE to? Definitely not. You can watch Angel on its own, enjoy it, love it, TiVo it. Live fast, die never. But, all other things being equal, if you can watch Buffy first, and then watch the two shows in coordination, that's better.

I say that the first 3 seasons of Buffy are a must before going into Angel. You get to see so many things that the Angel series itself can only allude to and imply while expecting the viewer to be fully aware of what it means. Such things you learn in Buffy that the Angel series can't teach are how Angel fell in love with the blonde "...Buffy..." chick whom visits LA those couple times in Season 1, how Cordelia was in high school before becoming the striving actress/prophet in Angel, Wesley's background as Watcher, and of course just what a Slayer is. Also, there're various other plot elements such as Angel's staking of Darla, the terror Angelus caused in Sunnydale, the Angel/Spike/Drusilla relationship, how Angel comes to the decision to move to LA so that he can atone for his demon counterpart's sins, and best of all...a relationship between Cordelia and Wesley that ya' have to see to believe! The first season of Buffy itself will probably be the most awkward for someone coming off Angel and expecting virtually a "prequel", as Angel is only a guest star who's appearances are mostly one-scene cameos, Cordelia is literally the ultimate superficial b**ch, and there's no sign of Wesley until past the halfway point of the third season.
As for if Buffy needs to be watched concurrently with Angel past Season 3, I personally feel it should, that way the viewer gets the full "Buffy-Angel'verse" experience. While I'm well aware Vyperman made his post at the beginning of this year, he's actually wrong; there are quite the number of crossovers where both shows should be seen. This occurs in Seasons 1 (Buffy Season 4), 2 (Buffy Season 5), and 4 (Buffy Season 7). Angel Season 3 (Buffy Season 6) is the only area I personally think leaves a perfect option over if both shows should be watched. There is an off-screen meeting Buffy and Angel apparently have between LA and Sunnydale between specific episodes early on, but that's only a very minor exception and offers nothing but off-screen phone calls and hesitant conversations which imply the meeting happening. Either way, I'm sure I've made my point clear; Buffy Seasons 4, 5, optionally 6, and 7 should also be watched concurrently with Angel, just as the first three seasons should be viewed before the Angel pilot itself.
As most of you may've noticed, I've made an ordered list on how to see the episodes of both shows best once concurrently watching becomes (IMO) necessary here on this forum. For the heck of it, here're all the crossover episodes of something involving Angel happening in Buffy, just in case anyone wants these episodes in particular rather than the full seasons:
Season 4:
Episode 57 - "The Freshman" - Semi-Crossover; Angel calls Buffy in this episode, just as he did in his series pilot, but we neither hear him speak or see him on the other end of the line.
Episode 59 - "The Harsh light of Day" - Not a Crossover on any counts, however, it sets up the plot for the Angel episode "In the Dark" (episode 3) with Oz and Spike getting set to crossover.
Episode 64 - "Pangs" - Crossover; Angel comes to Sunnydale (though hides himself from Buffy in particular) due to the vision Doyle had regarding her, leaving this between the Angel episodes "Bachelor Party" (episode 7) and "I Will Remember You" (episode 8).
Episode 76 - "The Yoko Factor" - Crossover; Following the events with Faith in LA, Angel once again comes to Sunnydale in order to make peace with Buffy over the harsh words he gave her, ending up sparring with her 'current' boyfriend along the way.
Season 5:
Episode 85 - "Fool for Love" - Crossover; This is rather unique in that it's not Angel whom appears, but Angelus in the form of flashbacks Spike has in recounting his 19th century days, alongside Darla and Drusilla as well (sort of a flashback link to Angel's corresponding episode Spike crosses into, "Darla", although Angel from 1900 does make a cameo).
Episode 92 - "Crush" - Crossover; Yet another unique area in that none of the main Angel series characters appear, but Drusilla returns to Sunnydale after her trilogy in LA for one final (outside flashbacks) plot, wishing to get Spike back.
Episode 95 - "Forever" - Crossover; Following the sudden death of Joyce, Angel visits Sunnydale for a single night in order to pay his respects and comfort Buffy, sharing one last moment together before her upcoming demise.
(Purely optional) Season 6:
Episode 104 - "Flooded" - Somewhat-Semi-Crossover; This is more to just explain why Angel returns from an off-screen meeting with Buffy in "Fredless" (episode 49), as he calls her at the end of this episode to set up their meet between LA and Sunnydale, evidently resulting in them both returning to their cities with awkward feelings.
Season 7:
Episode 139 - "Lies My Parents Told Me" - Somewhat-Semi-Crossover; This episode features Willow receiving a phone call from Fred in order to come to LA (establishing her own crossover), albeit this phone conversation is off-screen, the episode also shows flashbacks of Spike's troubles he had with his Mother that're alluded to in Angel's final season.
Episode 143 - End of Days - Crossover; Albeit occurring at the very end of this episode, Angel returns to Sunnydale for the first time in over two years, carrying with him the amulet Wolfram & Hart bestowed upon him for Buffy's battle with the First Evil.
Episode 144 - Chosen - Crossover; Even though he's only at the start of this finale, Angel and Buffy establish they still have a love for one another while Angel gives her the amulet for Spike to wear, as Spike meanwhile goes through the events that lead to his status in Angel's final season.

I say you watch both of them. Start watching Buffy first; hold off angel until you get to the point where he leaves Sunnydale to start his own series. From that point on you should attempt to watch both Buffy and angel interchangeably, just as if they were still on TV. However be aware, since both are dangerously brilliant shows, watching them together may turn out to be fatally overwhelming. :p

I watched Angel for a long time before I watched Buffy, so it's entirely possible. I think Angel's a lot more interesting on his own show than he was on Buffy (though that Angelus stuff was good).
But why limit yourself? Buffy's a great show too.

this is good. i say start here. follow this list along with angel and you'll be fine! watching the first 3 season as SSJConan said is a plus.
it's not necessary, it's just more background for Angel.
I personally feel that Buffy is a superior show. And I happen to think that Angel ended on a much crappier note than Buffy.
i recommend watching them both side by side from start to end, so you can decide for yourself which show you like better.

Well, there is that whole third episode where Oz and Spike just pop up with no explanation, basically serving up that "Buffy wanted you to have this all powerful ring". I personally think you kinda need the Buffy counterpart of that for a full appreciation of the plot. There's also the references of Angel's return from Acathla's hell, being Angelus in Sunnydale, his love for Buffy, Cordy's times in high-school with Aura and Harmony or dating Xander, Wesley's failure over Buffy and Faith, etc., etc. And I haven't even brought up the crossover episodes.
Without Buffy season 4, you're not getting everything of Angel from that first year, as he makes two trips to Sunnydale that season alone; not to mention vital flashback footage and another trip in season 5, as well as playing an important part in Buffy's series finale. *points up to my previous post here* As you can see. :\

I don't think you have to watch BtVS to get Angel because you can get most things through inference.
Oz doesn't play that big a part in "In the Dark" beyond a guy Angel once knew who brought him a magic ring. The fact that Buffy sent it isn't even treated as a big deal. As for Spike, it takes about two seconds to grasp that he's a still-evil vamp who doesn't like Angel.
To new viewers, Angel's love for Buffy is just like any character on a first-year show having a lost love in his background. And you don't need to watch BtVS to get that Cordy was a rich, snobbish brat in high school (she was still a little that way at the start of Angel), and her life in LA is drastically different. As for Angel's trips to Sunnydale, they don't really have an impact on AtS. And so on and so forth.
I think they did a great job of keeping the shows sort of connected while making it so that AtS viewers who had never seen BtVS never felt lost or out of the loop.
If you aren't interested in watching BtVS, you shouldn't feel like you have to in order to get AtS because you absolutely don't.

Yah, most of the stuff I can infer.
I'd like to check BtVS out one day, but I'm waiting for someone to bring the sets in to GameStop. :p
And then I'll watch all 12 seasons in the order you have them in your other thread, SSJConan. That might take a while. :p

You'd be surprised. I started purchasing the sets a couple months ago and am already up to Season 4 Buffy's finale and the last few episodes of Angel's first season. Hell, it's mainly due to me taking my time because I gotta purchase a new set once every couple weeks (waiting to get paid and all). All though, I do find it necessary to buy two corresponding seasons at once, so I got Seasons 4 and 1 of Buffy and Angel together, as well as most recently Buffy Season 5 and Angel Season 2. I'll probably find it kinda odd switching between full-screen and wide-screen formats once starting Seasons 5 and 2, but eh, that was Joss Whedon's call.

You don't have to watch one to watch the other, however, if you want to "get" mot of what happens in Angel, you should watch a few episodes of Buffy:
1x7 Angel
2x3 School Hard
2x13 Surprise
2x14 Innocence
2x21 Becoming Pt I
2x22 Becoming Pt II
3x3 Faith Hope and Trick
3x4 Beauty and the Beasts
3x14 Bad Girls
3x15 Consequences
3x19 Choices
3x20 The Prom
3x21 Graduation Day I
3x22 Graduation Day II
4x15 Who Are You?
4x16 This Year's Girl
7x22 Chosen
There are a lot more crossover episodes and things that influence Angel that I didn't list, but if you see the above episodes, IMO you'll have a better appreciation of the stuff that happens in Angel.

I personally like Angel a lot more than Buffy, and I started out watching Buffy. When they introduced Angel's character on BtVS, he was the only reason why I watched the show. Once he got his own spinoff, I just decided to watch that instead of BtVS. Although, if I have a lot of time in my hands, I'll probably go back and watch the rest of BtVS b/c it was a pretty good show.

I don't think you would really have to watch Buffy to get into Angel; however, you would miss the rich history behind the Angel-verse. PLus you miss out on David Boreanaz's best scenes as Angelus in Buffy Season 2. So yeah, you could go without Buffy but then again if you want the full picture you need to watch both.

My recommendation is to watch Seasons 1-3 of Buffy...and maybe Season 4 because there are some Angel storylines that crossover. IMO, Buffy went downhill after Season 3, but that's just me.
As for Angel, Seasons 1 and 2 are great. Season 3 was good, but not as good as the previous two seasons.
Season 4 - I hated the central storyline.
Season 5 - Eh. They didn't know the series was ending so thats why you have the storyline you have. Just felt rushed.

I loved season four. Thought it was amazing. It had its problems, but was so daring for this type of show. I loved the way every episode was so connected, and it feels like the entire season takes place in only a few weeks.
Season 5 of AtS started off shaky mostly because of the demands of the network. They wanted each episode to be a stand-alone. They wanted the atmosphere and tone to be lighter and brighter and less dark. Heck they wanted more scenes to take place during the day. (Which is why we suddenly got magical windows that allowed vamps to walk around in direct sunlight.) They took away some of the best things about the show (the small and big arcs, the dark themes, the dark, gothic feel) and the writers had to adjust. But they did around mid-season. And, despite having so little time to build up to it, they had a great finale.

You shouldn't have to watch Buffy at all to watch Angel. It's nice to get the full history of the Whedon-verse of Buffy but the first episode of Angel pretty much sums up where Angel has been before his show started. The character Doyle tells a rendition of Angel's life as Angel grimaces while hearing it. From there the show goes off on its own. There are some crossovers in the first season of the Buffy-verse characters but not much.

Yeah. The cross-overs in Season 1 of Angel seemed like "hey, look at me, I am cross-over" if you know what I mean. When it comes to "Orpheus" in Season 4, it just seemed a lot more natural, and of course, it made sense.
I watched Buffy pretty much from the beginning and went on into Angel, all thought I think I stumbled into Angel after the pilot had already aired but within the first 9 episodes. It's up to personal preference whether you watch Buffy or not, but it will give a richer back story overall. I personally preferred Angel over Buffy. It's not that Buffy was a childish show, but it was more a coming-of-age story while being the chosen one, while Angel was more mature show about dealing with your personal demons, both literally and metaphorically.

They retell Angel's story...but they don't really retell Wesley's, you just get it in pieces here and there and w/o watching Buffy, you never get it all. And there are some great episodes like "I've got you under my skin" that really lose some of their impact if you don't know Wesley's history.
Also since Wesley is the best character in the show, you should really know his whole story going in...

LOL Yeah. THat was funny. After a few episodes before squirming at the site of this older Englishman falling for a 18 year old I laughed hard when I first saw this scene. Plus seeing Giles constantly harass Wesley are some classic moments in Buffy Season 3.

is it true that David Boreanz does not want to protray Angel ever again.
Is it true he came out against a Buffy/angel movie?
Does he go to the conventions?

I'm not sure. I know he was upset at the cancellation and the WB tried to bring them back after they realized their mistake but he wouldn't do it at that point. With his work on "Bones" he might be too busy to make the conventions. That's speculation though. Again, not sure.
He said he would only play Angel again if the story and role was a challenging role.
