Why was chloe the only one (besides MM) that believed clark? If that phantom being made all these illusions in clark's head...then why not have chloe act like the rest of the people clark knew (in other words why didn't she agree with everyone else that clark is crazy?)

i said in a thread that I started (which met with no success) that everyone is themselves in the episode if clark never had powers. chloe seems sane in the smallville universe, but would be insane anywhere else.

To convince him by bringing a little of the truth into the lie the phantom wanted him to perceive as real. In Clark's real world, Chloe is the only one (besides Ma Kent and Lionel who wasn't in the epi) who knows about him. If the only one who believes him is crazy, then maybe he really is crazy too.

It ties in to the Phantom using facts from Clark's real life to convince him that the AU he is in is actually the real world and the life he has created for himself was just a delusion based on people, places, and things around him.
For example, the Phantom allowed Chloe to be the one that believed Clark in order to later reveal that she was at the mental institution too. This plays off of the fact that, in the real world, Clark knows Chloe has a family history of mental illness. In fact, the whole "Chloe is actually crazy" reveal and eventual death was what drove him back to the institute and helped push him towards accepting treatment. Oddly enough, while Lana appeared to be pushing him, it actually turned out that she made him decide to do the right thing by making him realize she wasn't the most important thing in the world.

maybe what the zoner was trying to do is mess with clarks head, or maybe since clark told chloe that she doesnt know how much she means to him thats because in his mind he used her as a way out of that trap ???his emotions tours her are strong??? i dont know im just thinking outside the box lol.

and i think too that even though the Zoner did 'create' this alternate world, he had to use some memories/thoughts/feelings from Clark's mind....
Lana: the Zoner uses clark's love for her as a weakness..in clark's mind, being with Lana is what made him normal...so the zoner uses his desire to be normal with Lana
Martha: i think the Zoner played on Clark's fears about his mom and Lionel becoming too close...so the zoner made that part of the nightmare come true by making them married...as for why she didn't believe Clark, i figure it has something to do with the fear that Lionel could potentially corrupt his mom (in the RW) also...this "corruption" is shown as her siding with Lionel in thinking he is crazy
Chloe: because in Clark's brain, Chloe has always accepted him and supported him, i think the zoner couldn't find a way to use his thoughts to make Chloe NOT believe him...so instead, the zoner uses his memory of her family's mental illness to discredit her...to discredit her trust and BELIEF in him....and also plays on his fears that because she is so involved in his life, she can get hurt...which she does. Remember there was a line where CK said that he didnt want her involved in this, they were after him, not her...but she was already involved....and she is already involved in the RW too...
hope this makes sense...this is how i interpreted the zoner's actions...

She wasn't normal, IMO. She might indeed have been crazy to believe him.

Interesting thoughts...it makes sense. i like how the phantom used objects and pictures around clark's room to throw him off, nice touch!

She was acting just like herself in RW everything she told clark was true: about Lana, about the Luthor's, about the mental hosptital tricking him...Chloe knew everything...she was still a reporter working on a big story against the Luthors...she knew she was sane yet before she died she told Clark "I'm not insane.".....wow Chloe is like Clarks brain! She was the one person besides MM who connected him back to reality. Not his mom, not Lana, not Lex, or Lionel, or Lois.....just Chloe...huh.

MM said Clark was fighting. I'd say Chloe was a figment Clark created to help him fight. But, like everything else, it is influenced by the Zoner. Just like MM appeared as a mental patient, so did she (albeit an escaped one). She was killed when Clark made the attempt to go with her instead of with Lana (who was clearly a tool of the Zoner's). Same as when they kept knocking out MM. It's just that because she's not a person like MM is, but instead a projection of Clark's, that she can be killed.
I think Chloe was created by Clark in attempt to keep himself sane, to hold on to the truth.

That was a cute touch and it reminded me of the movie the Usual Suspects (not a comparrison- just a play on the visiuals)

Would it be too far-fetched to think that maybe "Chloe" was actually another incarnation of MM in his dream trying to help him. In the hospital, the first time he approached Clark, he was taken away. So when he left, maybe he appeared as Chloe to keep trying to convince him he was in a dream. Then when she was killed off and Clark went back to the hospital, MM appeared again, coincidentally in the room right beside Clark's. Maybe that's too crazy of an idea, but I just find it hard to believe the Zoner would have the one friend who knows the truth about Clark appear in his dream.

No, I think MM used his powers to enter the 'dreamworld' to help Clark, but every time he communicated and got close, the Phantom would eject him.
I think the characters in the show each represented specific feelings and emotions.
Chloe was Clark's belief in right and justice, his 'will' if you will. (heh)
Lana was his temptations and desires, which he had to resist.
The reason Chloe was the 'voice of reason and guidance' in the dream was because subconsciously that is how he views her.

Interesting that his delusion didn't include the physical appearence of Lionel.

well, that may have been budget or time-related. hard to fit all those characters into one episodes budget, if you know what i mean. you could also note that Lois isn't important enough to him in reality to incorporate her into his dreamworld.

What a great way of stating that. Word!

Clark's illusion was created out of his own head. So in this AU Chloe is still his confidant, the one he trusts, the one who shares his secret. You can't be hypnotized into doing anything you wouldn't do in real life, and in the AU Chloe couldn't be created as anything other than the closest person to Clark. If she's crazy in the AU, let me be her cell mate in the asylum... :)
