I thought it was cool that they mentioned Whitney. It made it feel like the writers actually know what continuity means.

yeah there were alot of key people missing. But at least there was continuity, like Whitney, and what if moments like the Lex in a wheelchair bit.
Maybe Whitney is the only boyfriend Clark saw as an obstacle even though Adam and Jason posed greater threats.Somehow they weren't mentioned in that moment.

The only reason he mentioned Whitney is because Lana said freshman year in highschool, he said they would always be together, and since they weren't going out freshman year he brought up the person she was going out with at that time. So really no purpose to bring Adam or Jason up.
