Canon. Totally canon. The actor is really starting to tap into the character of Shelby. And I am totally starting to see some development unlike last season where they wasted him on just 'barks' and 'woofs'.
He actually helped Clark escape his nightmare!
Emmy-worthy!

Well, it was good that they finally gave Shelby some good material. He's classically trained, after all, and it's about time the writers gave him something he could really sink his teeth into.
It's also clear from the chemistry between Shelby and TW that those rumors of friction between the two are completely unfounded. I mean, we all know Shelby can be a bit of a diva, but, when you see a performance like this one, all has to be forgiven.
Emmy-worthy! [/B]
Certainly, Emmy-worthy, but I'm not sure Shelby will win. I think they might be afraid that he'll use his acceptance speech as a bully pulpit. The Emmys like to avoid that sort of controversy.

Shelby and Martian Manhunter made this episode.
The rest was killed because of that cursed HUM...
Not to mention my Lois wasn't there to make Clark's stay in the looney bin complete.

The ondes I voted for.
The Bark of Doom™ is back! Awesome!
With all that Clana it looks like Shelby isn't the only one with a leash around his neck
Riveting. That bark, those eyes, the wet nose, the fur. *sigh*
Shelby will find a way to get Clark and Chloe together.
It was great! Can we see him a little more often than twelve episodes apart?
Awwwww! The Chlark hug with Shelby. Chlarkby is on!
Would have voted for the one with can he bark at Lana and scare her off, permanetly but I didn't see it till after I voted.
But yeah Shelby's performance was emmy-worthy

That's interesting, because Shelby was in the running for the Dr. Grissom parton CSI.

As the surgical drill was about to enter Clark's head, illusory Lana faded away and Clark caught a glimpse of Shelby. That's when he realized (and said out loud) that he was still in the barn.
Seriously. Shelby did help save the day.

Psst, that's the real reason we've seen so little of Shelby. He steals whatever scenes he's in.
TPTB want to make sure that folks don't start calling this show "Shelbyville". :\

actually, that's exactly what Shelby did. If not for Shelby pulling Clark back from the Phantom's Zone (get it?? *sigh* yeah, it wasn't funny) then the Phantom would have possessed Clark's body..
and CLANA would exist for all eternity in Clark's corner of insanity.
Thank you, Shelby, thank you.

Shelby was his excellent self, Emmy-worthy really.
I find that, when someone's performance is so natural that it doesn't even look like they are acting, that is a the sign of a true thespian.
DeNiro-esque, perhaps even bordering on Brando-like.
And what a nice shiny coat !!

OK, this wasn't answered explicitly, so I'll do the honors. The "hum" so many of you heard was Clark hearing Shelby bark in his "dream" sequence. It brought him back to reality. He went with his gut and came back. Anyway, that's my take. If someone has a better idea, let's hear it. :)

I really didn't buy Shelby's performance in Labyrinth. I know he's had a long layoff, but he just didn't seem into it. When he was barking into the shadows at the zoner, he should have had a much more agressive demeanor. Unfortunately, I could totally see his tail wagging. It completely took me out of the moment.

When the Zoner was captured Shelby stopped barking and bowed his head to the Martian. GREAT ACTING! Best I have seen since Lassie!

I am pretty sure you are correct. I didn't catch the bit at the end because my PVR cut off a mintue or two of recording when Clark says "Shelby!" and breaks free.

Yep, you got it right Atomic girl. As discussed in another thread, people with closed captioning were able to read "animal growling" whenever we heard what I can only best describe as the "thump thump" sound during the humming music. It was Shelby barking in the barn back in the real world. I didn't get it either until the end of the episode when Clark said "Shelby" after the sound. The last "thump thump" sound they made more of the dogs bark audible. The hum really added to the creepy vibe you were suppossed to get in the episode. Shelby really was the hero of this epi. Yeah Shelby. Good Boy!

I disagree. Comparing Shelby's performances to Lassie and Benji, I think Shelby comes across as far more believable. I always thought Benji and Lassie were trying to "sell" it too much. Shelby knows, seemingly instintictively, when to tone it down. Shelby's performances are multi-layered. I was a bit concerned when I learned who'd been cast for the part. Often actors with a stage background, even method actors like Shelby, have a tendency to over-emote. This is necessary for a stage production but doesn't translate well to the small screen. Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised. I'm sure it hasn't hurt that Shelby has immersed himself in the mythos more than anyone else in the cast.
Face it, Shelby's this era's Rin-Tin-Tin.

The return of Shelby! Yay! *cheers* I was so happy when he appeared in the first five minutes that I actually clapped my hands with joy. I thought "friggin' finally!"
And then to have Shelby not only alert the BDA to danger but to eventually SAVE THE DAY! Now that's a super-dog. (heh. Sorry, couldn't resist! It's a sickness.)
I just wanted to reach through the screen and hug the little furball. *snifs* Shelby we missed you and we're glad you're back.

I picked the leash option and Chlark option :)
I thought it was pretty sad when Clark was talking to her/him, thanking him for helping him when all the dog probably did was slobber on stuff. but hey, it's like talking to baby's in baby talk, doesn't make them smarter... nor can they really understand.
do dog owners talk to their dogs like that?
I must watch "Krypto" again

Shelby had heart but I think his long absence rusted his natural talent a bit. Some of those barks lacked conviction or maybe it was his timing that was off. But I expect all that to improve once he reacquaints himself with the cameras.

CW doesn't come in especially well on my TV (but I am faithful to watch "Smallville" anyway!), so sometimes I miss some dialog unless I turn on the closed caption. I didn't really hear Shelby growling in the background, but the Caption said "Animal Growling" occasionally, & I thought, "What's that? Is that a goof?" It wasn't until the end that I realized it was a crucial element to the story! Good job Caption guys!
