Is it me or is there an annoying humming sound in the background...?

I don't hear it.

Anyone else notice that annoying monotone pitch in the background throughout the episode? It must be the sound effect of Clark's innermind. Interesting how it has a hollow sounding effect!!!
yeah, it's to show that he is still in his dream state.

 Whoever decided on the Sound Effects for the epi definitely did a good job. The music and background noise definitely has a way of putting your right there with Clark and his "Am I crazy?" mind-set.

Yes, and you can't imagine how much more annoying it is when that, along with the background music, is the only thing you can hear during the entire episode.

I listened for it and heard it. It really became "organic" so I didn't notice it before- since I wasn't listening for it. But, now- yeah it's definitely there and it's the Phantom. You can also tell with those strange monstrous phantom sounds.

The funny thing is when he wakes up, it will become very quiet!

I think the hum added to the drama. It definately made me feel more intense while watching.

I didnt notice the hum at all during the episode. Mabye its a problem for the broadcast in your area or just an isolated accident.

I noticed it, at first I thought I was going crazy but then I heard it again and again, so I figured it must of been made that way.
I heard it - I thought it was a prob with the station - but as it turns out it was just for 'effect' but I found it to be quite annoying after a while.
At least it went away during the commericals and in the end.

That hum was awesome, it made the episode for me. Totally agree with you MD.
Well - not everyone hears the same thing. Now if someone started saying they heard voices in their room talking to them - yeah that's crazy.
But there was a humm throughout the 'dream' scenes - it was an effect that some people might not have heard or noticed - but to me....it made me fell like when someone drags their nails across a chalkboard.....
I figured it was Shelby, but partially blocked by the phantom.

i thought the hum was shellby barking because i had it on captions and it said animal sound, but i thought that hum was going to drive me insane. then on the preview for the messangers they played that same sound and i thought, "now it's just getting annoying."

The hum made me crazy! I guess that was the point though...
Subliminal message....lol
I just heard Shelby towards the end and ever so often a soft noise on top of the other background humm......

Agreed. That was damn annoying.

True...but the goal of the writers should not be to make the fans crazy....it should be to show us crazy.....maybe use use something other than the white-out effect they sort-of had going on in the 'dream' scenes. Most people don't need much to get an idea that something is a 'dream'......most people ;)

LMAO......Clark was probably too traumatized by the possibility that his 'father' might really be hand soap.

That music in the background (with the hum) is one of the reasons why I thought this was the weirdest episode ever. It certainly complemented the episode well. I'm glad they added it.

yeah I thought I was the crazy one and when the episode started at the point where Clark woke up in the hospital the sound was so low I couldn't hear them so I changed to a another channel so not sure if it was fixed by then or the sound was better.
Madding when you can't hear the beginning.

LOVED the background music. Made you feel something very creepy is going on. And what I can only describe as the "thump, thumps" sporatically heard throught out the humming music were such a cool twist. The sounds were not random. They had a purpose. We learn from Clark at the end it was actually Shelby barking in the barn, back in the real world. Very cool idea from a music standpoint. That was really using the music to help tell the story. I didn't get it until the last ones actually incorporated more of the dogs bark. Shelby was really the hero of this one.

I know they did it for effect, but it was way too loud and it basically overpowered the episode and ruined it for me.

According to my TV captions, ;) whenever there was a hum, it said "Animal growling". Shelby perhaps? Haha.

I noticed the hum the first time i watched it and like many of you and made me feel uncomfortable and became annoying. But watching labyrinth the second time the hum is interrupted by muffled dog barks every new scene which i found to be a great touch to the episode.

I really liked the hum noise in the background, it kind of reminded me of the type of noise that you would hear in a weird sci fi movie, so I liked it and thought that it made the episode really good for me
Bat_Lantern
01-26-2007, 01:29 AM
From the get go I thought it was the dog being drowned out until the end when he realizes what it was and focuses on it and it pulled him out..
I'll have to go give it another watch and see if I was making something out of nothing.. I tend to think these guys have done enough episodes that anything that strange had a purpose..

To be honest with you, I heard the dialogue just fine, and only after reviewing the recording on the DVR did I realize what you were all talking about, but I can tell you that the hum was really awesome for the whole feel of the episode. Music is a very important part of telling a story, when used correctly.

Yeah that hum added an atmospheric depth to the episode, everything is slightly askew. for a film lover like me. i appreciate great sound design like this.
It shows that the episode's director and writers have imagination creating a product that exceeded my expectations.

I heard the hum too. LOUD AND CLEAR. it drove me nuts through the whole episode! it was hard to get into it b/c of it. if they meant to do that i didn't like it. too loud and ANNOYING. other than that, the ep was awesome.

I was watching the episode on headphones, and the hum almost made me have a psychotic break... I think the sound engineers made a really bad choice with that. I could barely hear anything else. I definately never heard shelby... Haven't we learned anything from monotonous sounds and rapid flashing lights causing seizures?

I heard the hum too and thought it was annoying but then again it probably added to the whole atmosphere of being in the mental hospital, and demonstrating what Clark's mind must have been going through in all the confusion.

This whole episode was horrible when you have a large bass with your sound-system. My entire room was shaking and everything was vibrating.
I did really like the episode, just the sounds where so loud.
PS: I also heard the humming !!

Yeah, it was Shelby barking. Which doesn't make much sense, as the scene in his mind was supposed to take no more than a couple of seconds in real life and Shelby just kept barking in the background :\

Well, it would have been more annoying had it been one long continuous bark (which I have yet to hear) throughout the episode.

Yeah, I like the hum as well. It magnified the surrealness of the the AU world.

You could fanwank it that Clark was just hearing the same bark over and over again but yeah, it would have been better if they hadn't made it only a few seconds. Even making it a whole minute would have helped make it more believably.
But I did like the humming and barking throughout the episode. Really added to the whole feel of it.

The barking was good, but I remember getting annoyed at the constant hum... sometimes I just wished they would have no extra sound at all for a few minutes at a time.

I noticed the hum as well. I barely took note of it for a while then really noticed it. I thought it was kinda cool, myself. It wasn't the usual emo rock we have playing in the background.
But by the end I was getting annoyed with it. It was actually a comfort to have the song at the end cause it meant the end of the hum.
What can I say? More proof that AlandMiles don't know when to put an end to an annoying thing. *cough*Clana*cough*

I thought they did that on purpose, because he could sort of still hear what what going on in the loft. At the end he said he could hear Shelby?

I've made a short video to help you recognize where the barking is. Yes, I was very very bored. :P
Anyways, the barking can be heard in every scene I've put on the video. It is the short and medium sized bursts that sound somewhat like someone beating on a drum if you don't realize what it's supposed to be. It is most recognizable in the next to last scene I've chosen, and last scene with Clark in the operating table where you can hearing morphing from drum sounds to clear barking sounds. These short to medium sized bursts were even labelled as "barking" on closed captioning. Hope this helps you see what we're talking about.
http://s60.photobucket.com/albums/h17/MidgardDragon/?action=view¤t=barking.flv
NOTE: Some of these might actually just be spikes in the hum, as I didn't pick and choose the ones that I knew specifically to be barking so much as quickly grabbed scenes with the sounds. I think they're all Shelby, but the ones that are definitely Shelby are the one with Clark in the Janitor's closet and at the end as the drill comes towards him.

Good to know the hum wasn't my headphones acting up. I didn't know where it was coming from!
Interesting touch.
