I can't wait to see Manhunter in this episode. I hope he does just as well as all the previous DC heroes and villains we have seen on Smallville.

MM has seemed so cool from the little we've seen, I can't imagine him turning out lame. He definitely won't manage to be lamer than Aquabro.

I doubt anyone can top Aquabro in the lame department.

Come on this is a bigger justice league guy than the other two.
there have always been an unsaid who are the more powerful JLA characters and who is the least powerful JLA character.
MM is always classified in the more powerful. Superman is of course classified in the more powerful.

Poor Ollie, all human without his arrows.

I can't wait for this between the director's cut and nomal previews this guy looks awesome. I cannot even wait for this.

I do not think it is possible for him to be lame. All the things I've seen/heard about him is awesome.

Yeah I can't see him being lame either. And Phil Morris is playin him which makes it even better.

Yeah, I'm reserving judgement for the moment but I had chills when he said "I'm from Mars."

If he becomes a bigger character and is involved in the impending season finale fight, he has the potential to be even better than GA.

Martain Manhunter was brilliant in this episode. The way he spoke and interacted with Clark, great. I loved when his eyes changed and he flew off at the end of the epispde. I cant wait until i see more of him at the end of the season!!!!! Great episode by the way. 1 more Zoner to go!

His only real known weakness is he is scared of Fire.

he is a nice addition to the show but he needs more screen time.

BigSexySuperMan
01-25-2007, 07:33 PM
They are slowly building him up to make you want to tune in again and again. This is not a once or two time thing like Cyborg, Impulse and Aquabro. They are going to do with him similar to what they did with Green Arrow and slowly build his character up with it climaxing at the end of the season I believe.

He is the coolest comic book hero to guest star because unlike someone else, he actually flies on screen.

How does he get the red flight trail despite wearing dark, black clothes?

I think the red trail may be from an energy field that propels him.

You know, why do so many polls just hit the extremes? It goes from, "He's supercalafragilisticexpialadoscious!!!" to "He's sucktastic!" Ok, this one has a "I'll reserve judgement," but how about an, "I like him, but he's not the best," or "He's really cool, but not as cool as Olly," or something like that? Pick one of those if you want my vote, 'cause none of the poll answers work for me.

Can you believe I didn't realize he was MM until the zippo scene?

I completely avoided all spoilers, I knew there was an episode with him in it but I didn't know it was this one.

I was thinking, when he said he was from Mars, 'how lame, next he'll be Napolean'.

But then with the fire, I was like WHOA! I KNOW WHO THAT IS!

Totally likin' the character so far. Didn't have any stupid cheesy lines, acted like an adult, and wasn't gonna stick around to let Chloe know about HIS identity too.

Besides, aside from Clark, we haven't seen any other 'Big Guns'.

MM is a BIG GUN. Can't wait for more.

that'd be cool, if for season end he helps clark hunt down a few more Phantoms, and MM finds himself on the ropes and reverts to green skin on accident.

yeah, right. they don't have it in the budget for that much green make-up.

Bat_Lantern
01-26-2007, 01:13 AM
I liked how the fire was still a threat though they were in Clark's mind. Depending on time period/author the Martian Manhunter had a Psychic and Physical aversion towards fire. I have a reprint of the first MM comic and I love seeing these characters used in television.
Early on he was always in human form in public, he joined the police force as a detective and chose the generic name of John Jones to fit in on earth.
There have been so many retellings/backstory changes over the years you can really take your pick but some have the Martian culture wiped out by fire thus leaving a psychic scar on this high-mentally advanced race.. other retellings have a complicated story with Oa and fire being part of their ancient reproduction.. (I think wiki went with that one..)
either way MM is an interesting character that has been a fun tease so far and I like how they have taught the audience about what makes him who he is..
Addiction for Oreos (or chocos)
Aversion to Fire (mental and physical)
Similar strength and "beam" vision as Supes.. (which makes the fire aversion a bit funny in my book)
From Mars
Great Mental Powers
Invisibility
Can take the shape of a Human

can't wait to see if we get a glimpse of
his "private" green self.. or some other shape shifting abilities.

All in all, I like when Smallville leaves me wanting more.. and I think getting our first real look at a Mind Reading Super Hero while inside Clark's head was a smart play by those in power.

I vote for more Mar-Mar (as my nephew calls him)

:p

And I want him to use his shapeshifting...oh well  at least I got a taste of the others last night. Mindreadin, invisibility, etc.
And ah yes fire and oreos are his weakness .

Anyway yeah J'onn rocks.

It seems they're doing a good job with introducing the Martian Manhunter. I thought it was fabulous casting Phil Morris in that role. The Manhunter is a more experienced character and hopefully they can have him do some mentoring of Clark.

Thought MM was a great addition to this episode. I wanted to have more of him but I'm sure we will get the full explanation in due time. If Chloe hadn't shown up, I'm sure MM would have told Clark who he was.

A couple of Questions though:

Why did MM adhere to the rules of Clark's fantasy world? Was it just to fit in so he wouldn't be discovered?

If MM put the Phantom into some martian device, why does he need Clark?

I love Phil Morris as MM. he brings such maturity and knowledge to the character and the series as a whole. Most of the people are just fumbling around trying to figure out what is happening around them. MM knows and Phil (in his limited action) portrayed that very well. Good job with the casting!

Please. Do you expect them to just give you his life story in one episode? Hell that would take 2 episodes at least to cover his true origins. Take it for what you can get and enjoy the build up.

I swear some people are so impatient.

Patience is a virtue. Gain it!

They are probably not ready to turn him into his true martian form. Even though what we see of him most of the time when he is green is not even his true martian form.

Bat_Lantern
01-26-2007, 10:57 AM
Think back to the build up of Prof. Milton Fine's character.. that was slow, calculated and brilliant. If MM was to be just a one episode wonder then ya.. they should have showed more.. but I believe they are doing something more similar to their Brainiac intro of last season.. and I trust it will be excellent.

As far as the device goes.. it looked to me like Clark had to push the phantom out and do his part so MM could use the device to suck him out the rest of the way.. and it looked like he was doing his best to break into the dream world but the only way to do it was by following the rules established by the dream phantom.. really fun idea IMO. If you didn't know who MM was, your first thought may be that he is another crazy guy making up alien stories in a psych ward.

Good times.

It was good! This was the best way to introduce him since so many comic book and even DCAU storylines have Martian Manhunter saving the JLA from a mind prison. One of the most anticipated episodes yet.

First the Justice League then MM.. Smallville is on a guest appearance roll

There was less MM than I would have liked to have seen and while I get that it's going to cost money they budget doesn't seem to be able to handle right now, I really would like to see him in his green form later.

But this was a good start. PM is a good enough actor that if given some good material, he should be able to do well with it. I hope they bring MM back for more than just one episode for this season and definitely bring him back for the next.

Clark needs a good friend and perhaps mentor and I think MM would do well in that role.

So as an introduction for more later, I liked it.

I've always liked MM. Unlike everyone else Clark has met so far, MM is already grown up and a vet of the crime fighting scene. Since the JL has gone to blow up Lex's facilities, it seems that MM will be the person helping Clark get all the Zoners. Clark is obviously no where near his potential but I hope MM will help him realize it.

Honestly, the show would survive without her. She's only dragging it down right now IMO. She's ready to do movies. KK has established herself as an actress and wants to make more money. That's good for her. All I said was that tptb can make atleast 7 seasons. All it takes is an imagination to make an episode. That isn't the hard part. It's all the contracts and stuff that makes it harder.

I think that Clark needing MM to deeat 2 of the Zoners is weak. If it were not for MM, Clark and the world would be toast. If the show is about SM, then SM should have a hand in defeating the villians. And why didn't Clark assume he was a zoner at their first meeting? Weak. These writers need to step back and look at the whole picture.

And what's the deal with MM's crystal? How does he have one that sends zoners back to the zone?

We don't know yet. We'll have to keep watching to find out. This is one of those scams that they do. They build off each episode to keep you watching. If they didn't it would be a movie...
