I haven't yet but it's definately on my list! Right now I am trying to work my way through the Rachel Morgan series and I am really looking foward to the new Sookie book. Did you know they are making a TV series for HBO based on the Sookies? I can't wait!

I am definately looking for a new series to take care of my Anita Blake addiction since her new novels have turned into porn.

Ack. Hamilton should really take the "Vampire Hunter" off of her book titles. I mourn Anita. Admittedly the Vampire Hunter series isn't and wasn't meant to be high literature, but at least there was an effort put into previous books.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well the series is actually known as the Southern Vampire Mysteries. I call it "the Sookies" because it's easier to type and honestly I just like the sound of it. :p

Personally, I'm not sure what type of category it fits into. You see it's a combination of horror, mystery, romance, and comedy. Yes, you read that line right. It's a combination of all the above. Sookie Stackhouse (that name grows on you) is a waitress at the local bar. Though not unattractive, Sookie doesn't date much. Sookie reads peoples thoughts whether she wants to or not. Everyone thinks she's crazy because she spends so much time trying not to read other people's thoughts that it makes her dingy. So, she never has boyfriends, because really, who wants to be able to read their lover's mind in the middle of an intimate moment? Then Sookie's dream man, the one-man whose mind she can't read walks into her bar. The fact that he's a Vampire just makes dating a bit more complicated.

There are many similarities to Laurell K Hamilton's Anita Blake books. However, "the Sookies" is written in a different, lighter voice. I found Bill the vampire boyfriend, Sookie, Sam, all distinct from those in the Anita books. What strikes me the most is the "normal" quality of Sookie that makes her so identifiable. Well, you sans mind reading abilitites and living in a world with real Vampires that are now "out of the coffin" so to speak, lol. Sookie, the heroine, turns from a naive, intentionally simple waitress into an unwilling participant in supernatural politics and an ugly crime investigation, discovering and using hidden resources. Everything is fresh and new to Sookies eyes and we get to watch the Sookie character grow in the process. It's like going back in time and seeing Anita when she was an up and comer, before she became the jaded "Executioner". Let's just hope Sookie doesn't end up being a ho for anything with long hair, smooth chests, and a giant "anaconda".

The newest book is called "All Together Dead" and is not yet released... I think it will be in May? I don't remember. But the first chapter of that book is available online at the authors website:

Hmm. Since this is the seventh book in the series, I am not sure if it will be all that enjoyable since you'd be playing catch-up to what's going on. Harris seems to make it accessible enough that anyone well be brought up to speed.... but that's coming from a reader who's read all the books in order soooo... Hope that all makes sense! My fingers actually ache from typing all that!
