I liked most of "Hydro" but I couldn't help but wonder, what has Lex become? Why on earth is he so desperate to be with a woman who only wants him because she can't have the guy she really wants to be with? Yes, Lana is beautiful but I'm sure Lex could find another girlfriend. I mean, he's an attractive CEO/billionare, not to many those on match.com are there? In this episode, the way he was ingratiating himself to Lana was pathetic. I guess, Lionel's parenting, the long list of head injuries, and those Belle Reeve shock treatments must have really left Lex with some seriously low self-esteem and cognitive issues. Are we supposed to believe that Lana is "so good" so divine she can change everything bad about him and so he must submit himself to her love? Only through Lana can he be saved? Ugh! Courtly love * went out of style with the Middle Ages!
Personally, I wish Lex would have kicked Lana out of the mansion when he learned she loves Clark and shown some spine and self-respect. Lana is not really devoted to Lex and I won't be suprised if she will leave him at the alter. Which will serve him right for being so desperate! I'm sorry to say it but this season, Lex isn't rising to evil magnifence but becoming a love sick puppy. If he is really a egomanicial villain-in-training then where is his ego?

exactly what i was thinking at the end of the episode!

I mean c'mon Lex...Lana had just retreated from you, and admitted to loving Clark. She was willing to put Lex on hold while she made a last attempt to seek any last remaining love from Clark...yet Lex knew this, and without dignity he willingly accepted her. Remarkably pathetic of that character.

There are a number of reasons for Lex's pathetic actions:

1. He wants Lana so he can 1-up Clark.
2. He wants her to prove that with money and power he can control everything.
3. He wants her, because he picked her and he has to win.
4. After Lana's confession, he wants her so he can exact his revenge on her for loving Clark more than him.

Regardless, I'm personally hoping its all an act and he has no real love for Lana. He really shouldn't. To me, Lex Luthor, as he is now, seems incapable of love.

yeah when some one says i love you and an my ex...i'd say houston we have a problem or get the hell oughta my house.
I think Lex is baffled that he hasn't won over Lana yet. She was easy to bed but she's hard to wed.
He is still evil with everyone else its just he's Lana's puppy now.
And what confused me is he allowed her to flip flop on him in that same scene.

But hasn't he had an eye for her since day one?

Maybe he's trying to convince himself that he's on the right path like shown in Lexmas.

Lex's spine is now located in the same place where his balls are at - in Lana's firm grip!

I can only hope this is all Lana’s dream and Lex has become great all by himself.

Yes, but you lust with your eyes, not love.

"Maybe he's trying to convince himself that he's on the right path like shown in Lexmas."

Yes, I think this is a big part of it. Lex is on the road to becoming a full-out sociopath right now, but in studying psychology, studying Anti-Social Personality Disorder (sociopaths), I have learned that they may continue to develop sociopathic tendencies while they still do love someone at the same time and hope that that someone makes them better. For instance, Ted Bundy (really more of a psychopath than sociopath...yes, there IS a difference, psychopaths kill for no reason, sociopaths do it for some "grand purpose" and use people as a means to an end, like Lex does), fell deeply in love with this woman (before he became the full-out evil killer he would become). He loved her so much, but he continued to lie to her, steal sometimes, and do other such things. So his love for her was strong, but still not strong enough to stop him from the path of darkness he was on, although maybe he thought it would be. You see, something that often makes psychopaths/sociopaths EVEN WORSE is when someone is ALWAYS there to save their butt. Sure, it's good to help them and pull them out of darkness, but only THEY can love themselves, no ONE PERSON can change them.

"To get closer to clark."

Yeah, that's probably a part of it too, to find out Clark's secret, althoug he seems less obsessed with his secret this season (maybe he's just becoming better at hiding his obsessions).

I don't know I think it's all a ploy, notice how to Clark that he doubted that she would say know since she's pregnant.

But to Lana he was all like I'm afraid of the answer.

Lex can buy any girl/woman and he has but he's always been in love with Lana and always wanted the love and devotion she had for Clark.

But like all rich people, what will happen once he has her too? Will it be just another toy to be thrown away?

I really, REALLY hope its all a master plan to get close to Clark, or else this version of Lex sucks the tomato !

Maybe he's just sticking with Lana to snag her baby - his evil heir to mold into what he sees fit.

I think he must have 'plans' for Lana if he's going through so much trouble to marry her. I don't think it's 100% all Clark-envy.

I'm all for Lex kicking it up a notch to being more evil.

That was probably the scariest Lex scene so far on the show in my opinion.

Why? Because when Lana started talking about her love for Clark and so on, he really looked like he could just rise up and start beating her up or something. It seemed like if Lana hadn't turned on it and said yes, he would have lost all his self-control.

Lana is now the only thing keeping him from going all mental...so when she finally leaves him/dies or whatever, that's when we will have our Lex Luthor.

I cannot respect anyone who will marry someone who just plainly told them that they were in love with someone else. Lex has always been an egoist. He would not take sharing Lana's heart with someone else. Completely out of character for any version of Lex I know of. He looked so sappy and happy when she said yes I will do it, even if I love Clark. I dislike Lex, because he is the bad guy, but he was always a bad guy with a huge ego. He would not share his life with someone where he is not #1, the only one, without a doubt.

I was actually kinda surprised that Lana flat out told Lex she still loved Clark..... then changed it to that she loves both of them.

I know that they did it that way for episode climax etc but still - I don't think I would take that and just say ok....especially if you're Lex. His facial expression changes while he's hugging her - I think she should have kept the 'I still love Clark' thing to herself.....has she forgotten all the crazy, strange evil things Lex has done or can't she see what he will do?

It was a sad moment for all the "fans" of the Lex that is suppose to be Superman's arch nemesis.

Unless of course Lex pulls a "sleeping with the enemy" or reveals all that this was but a plot to seduce the real love of his life, Clark.

I kind of think he's playing them both. Remember when he went to Linda and said "Get me all you can on Clark Kent and Lana Lang" it seemed to me that it wasn't just relationship stuff he was after. Reading others posts I could see him picking Lana beacause of her connection with Clark. I felt that scene with Linda was used to show how that his radar on Lana and Clark is back on. This will play later when Lana knows about Clark but keeps it from Lex. Lex will suspect something, then we might see Linda make a return as his spy.

Just my opinion - I think that Lex's radar is always up when it concerns Clark....

I hope they push Lex to be more of an obsessed with ruling the world and less obsessed with Superman/Clark. Right now he's kinda fixated on him......

And this is just random - I always thought that Smallville and Gotham were a distance from Metropolis......when Lake mentions she can see Gotham....I guess that means she's got a big high-rise but still.....I thought they weren' that close. Sorry - that was just random......

I just can't believe that Lex is in love with Lana, baby or not. I think this is just his way of getting at Clark. Seriously, the man is evil. I loved how much pleasure he got out of telling Clark about the baby.
I think Lex is just using Lana to get to Clark. He pretty much sealed the deal by telling Clark about Lana carrying his child. Who wouldn't have known that Clark would back off knowing that. But it's a win win for Lex, because he knows that Lana is still in love with Clark so she will still try to keep some kind of relationship with him hence Lex is still in the middle of it all. He can keep tabs on Clark and get the pleasure of knowing that it drives Clark nuts that he is with Lana.

Please don't go there. The more I see of Lex on this show, the more I view him as a complete joke. His whole role in this episode was sitting around like a little baby waiting for his little honey bunny to give him an answer on the proposal. I don't care if he gave money to Linda, it was only done to see if Clark and Lana were hiding something from him.

The whole Lexana storyline is just a ploy so Lana betrays Lex for Clark(who she is loyal too forever) and dumps him at the altar-henceforth tipping Lex over the edge and finally making Clex bitter enemies!!

Anything Clark wants, Lex is hoping to take from Clark.

Lex wants to know his secret, he has got Lana somewhat right now.

Anything to crush Clark is what Lex is hoping for the most.

So the evil is clearly shaping up.

I voted for the last option...I'm tired of seeing sad, sappy, lovey dovey Lex. Hopefully, the change will come during sometime this season...

This episode really made Lex look freaking pathetic. I mean anybody could see that he is nothing but a rebound guy for Lana and always will be . I'm so sick of Lexana already . It makes no sense , it's boring , it's one of the stupidist storylines I've ever heard of , and it makes Lex look like a desperate puppy who is willing to be second in line for Lana's boy toy buffet. I guess Lex doesn't get that he's getting Clark's left overs.

My take on this episode and Lex's view towards Lana is that life is just a big game of chess!

That's how Lex and Lionell always lived their life- in a constant chess battle. This took a major toll on the way that Lex views the world- everything and everyone is just a pawn to get whatever else he wants. Lana, right now, is just another part of his game of chess against Clark.

The scene that stands out is the verbal fight between Clark and Lex. The way that Lex tells Clark about Lana's baby reminded me of how someone would say "checkmate!" in a game of checkers. It's all just a big sick game now.

Lex is playing chess with Clark, unaware, while Lana's life hangs in the balance!

The only way that they can redeem Lex's character is if he is totally playing and manipulating Lana.

Exactly! My view of Lex Luthor is the same, his treatment of Lana was so out of character. The Lexana relationship dynamics is ruining the Lex we've always liked (well some of us have liked!). Lex Luthor has always been self-assured , and even arrogant, that is one of his flaws. It makes sense that as he goes more to the darkside, his prideful nature should be getting more obvious. No one (even nice people who aren't villains) would really like being loved second best to someone they are in love with, and someone who's egomanical like Lex is supposed to be, would demand devotion from Lana. Lana talks a lot about trust, and closeness, but how can Lex (who has been betrayed before) even trust her at all when she shows by running back to Clark, that she isn't committed to their relationship.
