Joan of Arcadia is an excellent show, and it is one of my favorite shows on right now. The idea behind the show is outstanding, and the cast is great. I have always been a huge fan of Joe Mategna, and Amber Tamblyn is HOT.

It's a great show! I love it!
I watched the premiere because I was curious and now it is appointment TV for me! I love that the "gimmick" of her relationship with God does not overpower the show but is simply one aspect of a great multi-faceted story!

Next to Smallville, it's the only show I watch on a regular basis. I really like the fact that "Fat Tony" is a good guy. Jason Ritter does a great job as well!

I recapped the last new episode, "Recreation" (when God tells Joan to throw a party, I wish I had thought of that excuse as a teenager), over at Panfandom.com.

The recap is here (http://www.panfandom.com/nuke/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=1167&mode=nested&order=0&thold=1).

I didn't want to follow another series, but this has sucked me in.

Perhaps the greatest strength of the show is its casting. Getting pros like Joe Mantegna and Mary Steenburgen to play the parents was a great coup. And the crew of (formerly) unknowns playing the teenagers has been great.

I've only seen two episodes thus far and I think that I'm starting to like the show.

I'm still confused though as to what the whole entire premise is.

God shows up in the form of different people to Joan to give her a mission that will help someone?

The one I just saw was when Joan had to join the debate team and help the boy with the speech impediment find his voice, and where we find out that the teenage boy was gay and that his dad killed the priest. (I really liked that part because I can relate to what the boy felt...definitely was/is sometimes how I feel.)

Hm, so question to anyone who watched the pilot, why did God choose to appear to Joan?

Wohoo! My 50th post!:)

The show is currently in its second season, and overall it has not been that great of a season so far. But the last two episodes that have aired recently were great. In fact, two of the best episodes they have ever done. I hope the rest of the season can continue on this course.

The last episode that focused on Grace and her barmitzfah was great too. That makes three great episodes in a row. Next week's episode looks more light hearted, and I am hoping that it is a funnier episode because this season has been darker and more dramatic.

I agree. You would think that this would have been covered in the first season. However, the one interesting thing to come out of it is the possibility of an affair between Will and his boss Lucy. I have been a fan of Annie Potts since she played Janine in Ghostbusters. I think she is doing a good job.

The two things that have made me interested in season two are the relationship between Luke and Grace, and the possibility of an affair with Will and Lucy.

The last three episodes of JOA have been awesome. But season one was definately better overall.

The reason that I like them being a couple is because they are opposites of each other. The reason that it will take awhile for them to actually get boring is because Grace is such a complex character. She has many layers to her, and it will take awhile for Luke to get her to open up. Most of the time when two characters finally get together, it becomes boring because the "will they or won't they" anticipation factor is gone. But I don't see that happening anytime soon with Luke or Grace. Even though they are technically together, Luke has a long way to go before completely winning Grace over.

I only just caught on to this show recently, I'm so hooked and I've only seen up to season 1 episode 14 so far!

I'm disheartened to hear that season 2 has been quite dark, I should be fully caught up soon and the last thing I want is to be caught up in an obsession with an angst-ridding show :/. Surely with God directing Joan towards paths of greater good things should be happier for and around her.

I have to disagree.

Joan wants things to turn out OK for what she thinks God is trying to teach her. But what she has yet to realize is that God teaches on His schedule not ours. Even if we think we know what He is doing. We don't know for sure.

thomasw
12-15-2004, 12:12 AM
I think Dru meant that God in the show does not bring happiness to Joan over the first half of season 2 and was not making a comment on real life :)

I've seen the first couple of season 2 eps now, and I can see how it's darker. I hope things get happier for Joan as the season progresses.

Wow, I've seen up to episode 7 of s2 now and it certainly is getting depressing. In season 1 Joan stumbled and humiliated herself and got embarassed, but almost every time her actions had good ripples and she succeeded in making the lives around her better. It seems so far in season 2 that with every task she is making bad ripples (she got greedy with the homeless task, jealous with the video one, hurtful with the election, etc), but learning about herself in the process.

I really hope this is going to tie into a greater design, that these small failures are all part of leading her to a greater success and a greater good. If it's just the direction the show has decided to take then that's a bit disappointing, I hate being made depressed by a show (but I suppose that serves me right for watching so many episodes in a row).

On a more positive note, how awesome is Amber Tamblyn (and the rest of the cast really) at acting out the pain they're constantly being put through? She's got an incredible range, and she really brings complete body language and facial expressions into effect along with great verbal deliveries.

Also how great was it when Mrs LandingGod (the actress who was Mrs Landingham on West Wing) hugged and comforted Joan after Judith went to the hospital from the binge drinking. I'd been waiting for Joan to turn to God for comfort, it was so cool and satisfying for it to finally happen at such an emotional moment.

Sigh. Enough gushing. I love this show :)

WBCrazyGuy
12-15-2004, 12:13 PM
Well, of course she is humilating herself. She thinks she should do one thing and she goes off to do another. You see, she has her focus all on the thing she thinks that she is supposed to be doing, instead of what God wants her to do.

Make Sense?

thomasw
12-15-2004, 04:58 PM
My argument was an outside looking in one. I'm not arguing that Joan is not internally consistant, just that the writers are making the choice to evolve the show in this direction.

The humiliation/embarassment was part of her success in season 1, it was funny when she tried out for the cheerleading squad etc. She got a little humiliated, but she still did good and learned something so it was more lighthearted.

In season 2 she is still learning, but now she is learning by mistakes and bad ripples (such as not keeping her eyes open to stop Judith from binge drinking) rather than by lighthearted humiliation, success and the joy that brought her. Lately she's never jumping up and down with joy after completing a mission.

So my stance was that I hope the writers have done this on purpose, and that it will be addressed and have a greater impact in a future episode, rather than the writers having just decided one day "the show needs to be darker" and that's it.

Makes sense :)

thomasw
12-16-2004, 04:29 AM
I'm fully caught up to date now with season two, and.. just.. wow. Judith's death was so intense, that was extremely well done for maximum effect. Grace's growth was great too, as is the further development of her relationship with Luke, and it seems like Joan is starting to become more likable again (she seemed to be blowing Adam off a lot for much of the start of s2).

I'm really hoping that she will confide to Adam that she's speaking with God again. We already know from the start of the season that he's open to it and believed her, and they've given a few hints throughout the season of him still believing it and her saying things that support it (she says things sometimes and he'll look at her funny).

Will seemed genuinely surprised that Lucy was interested in him. There could be a lot of interesting fallout from this, but I do hope that the Gerardi's work it out. Luke and Grace's relationship has been developing so nicely, hopefully Will/Helen, Joan/Adam and Joan/God do so too.

There doesn't seem to be many fans of JoA on this board, but has anyone gotten back into it with the airing of the new episode?

I quite liked it, it was a much-needed break from the darker nature of the season so far. We had God taking a different approach with Joan in order to help her get faith in herself (but even in doing so God still helped others through her, as when she tells Kevin that he needs to stay in the game when he's depressed about Beth), and we had generally much happier and lighter happenings.

I like the way they've turned the Lucy situation too. Instead of having Will be tempted by her and possibly leading to an affair it looks like they're going to have her feelings be unrequited, which is an interesting situation for Will to be in with his boss.

There was a thread a while back but not many people were posting in it. I don't know if there just not that many Smallville fans who are also JoA fans, but I for one love the show.

The latest episode was great, really powerful. If they can finish off the season with more episodes like that then it'll be great, I just hope Joan grows a bit more because she's been kind of stuck for the last half of the season.

thomasw
02-27-2005, 12:51 AM
The last episode was the 17th episode of the second season (22 episodes in a season).

The show centres around Joan, a teenaged girl in high school, and her family and friends. Each episode God appears to Joan in the form of an avatar (so it could be the shaggy guy walking five dogs down the street, the little girl playing in the playground, or the janitor at school) and gives her usually vague missions which end up helping Joan and the people around her in unexpected ways.

It's very well written and the show does an excellent job of interconnecting everything in any given episode - the actions Joan takes in response to her talking with God cause "ripplies" of good through everyone in the show, often in ways Joan herself doesn't realise, such as in helping her detective father in solving a crime or her paralysed brother in coming to terms with his new life.

It's hard to describe the show and do it justice though. It's decidedly not corny, and it most definately isn't the highschool version of Touched by an Angel. The best way to think of it is as a high school drama about a girl and the people around her that has the twist of her talking with God (in a non-denomination, non-evangelical way).

The General

I would watch it, but dont fully understand the GOD thing. Meaning, from a bible viewpoint, GOD didnt turn into other people to get his message across, thats why he send Jesus , and thats why GOD put his words into the disciples mouth to speak to us.

But in the show(which btw is done for entertainment) they make it seem like , GOD turns himself into young children and older children and then talk and give advice.

I really do believe the show is not base on the bible viewpoint. I do peep at the show a little bit tho, its ok, but not my cup of tea.

Please dont start a flame war, haha just was giving my 2 cents.

Dru
03-04-2005, 02:45 PM
What the heck are you talking about? It's a TV show! It's not going on the Bible or anything like that. It couldn't care less what the Bible says! Heck it regularly says ALL religions are right and anything you choose to believe in is ok. Which anyone who's gone to church knows the Bible says the total opposite! It's not meant to be a Christian or any one religion show.

Anyone here like "Joan of Arcadia"? I think it is (or was) a great show, which had a great family dynamic. I got really angry when it got canceled. I know there have been other threads to discuss this show, but they haven't been posted in for a while, so I thought I'd start a new one. I also thought I'd include the link to a "Save Joan" petition. Hopefully, it might do some good. If anyone is interested, it might also help to send CBS e-mails on their feedback page. Apparently, they canceled "Joan" because they didn't think it appealed to a teenage audience, so this is our chance to prove them wrong.

It is a shame too, because even though season two was not as good, the finale was awesome and left a lot of potential open for the third season.

Yeah, it really sucks. There's a petition to bring it back (there's a link to it in my first post above) but those usually aren't successful. But we can hope, right? What's most annoying is that CBS is replacing "Joan" with some "Medium" rip-off with Jennifer Love Hewitt. I'm sure its going to bomb. I mean, even though "Joan" ratings decreased in the second season, most episodes still came out second in the time-slot. I doubt the new show will be able to get ratings like that.

VM was never bad with ratings, just steady with about 2.5 - 3 mil viewers a week, it was on the block to be cancelled but fans like myself fought to keep it going, and it worked. Unfortunately, JOA fans did not get the same result, watch VM you may like it, great show:D

I know they always cancel good shows like Joan and Angel and leave you with a huge cliffhanger.

After having seen every episode of the show I'm really sad that it got cancelled. It was a very good show. There were some interesting storylines that I'd really wanted to see unfold, like what is the deal with that Ryan Hunter character? But I guess we'll never now, unless the show gets picked up again.

did her brother ever get out of the wheelchair?

nope. But he did regain some feeling in his legs. There was one episode where he walked a little with the aid of some medical equipment but he was never completely cured.

I only watched the second season... which I watched in its entirety.... I got hooked in the season premiere because they had my quote from Howard's End... only connect... when Teenage, Punk God stole Howard's End I knew it was coming... and the songs in that episode fit in so perfectly with the Only Connect quote... so perfect. Joan of Arcadia will be forever amazing in my mind because of that.

I'm disappointed it was gone... I thought VM was in far more danger than Joan of Arcadia. And to leave us with such a cliffhanger. And the guy (don't remember his name... but anti-Joan) was one of my favorite actors from the show Popular... so I was really excited to see where his character would go. Now I'm getting angry just thinking about it.

I wanted to see her fight Satan. I know that's where they were going with that guy.

Something like that... although I'm hoping there would have been some kind of twist on it.
