I'm very impressed by Blu-Ray (resolution 6X better than DVD? Whoo!), but I don't think it's a definite that it'll take off. First off - the name. It's just silly. HD DVD isn't the slickest name in the world either, but it's slightly more acceptable, in my opinion.
Second - affordability. Some of the prices I've seen on Blu-Ray players are ridiculously high. And to take full advantage of the players, you're going to need HD TVs, and if you get an HD TV, they're going to try to sucker you into buying the widest, biggest LCD or Plasma screen they can sell to you. Last I checked, not everyone can afford all that. HD-DVD players are, from what I've seen, cheaper.
IMO, it doesn't matter which one "wins" (and make no mistake, there can only be one massive media format) - though I'm not an expert, I view the winner as a stepping stone to the REAL successor to DVD, just as LaserDisc was just the intermediary between VHS and DVD.
