I liked her response... that she wasn't ready to find out... and I'm sooo glad they didn't kiss.

^I am glad they didn't kiss either. How long has it been since Jonathan died? I was surprised to see Lionel act soft especially when she visited him. The scene with Martha coming to Lionel reminded me of the times of Lana coming to Lex before they became a couple.
yeah it felt like a completely different character, i found the whole situation to be akward, but of course we were all expecting some sort of romance to stir up

That scene was so unbelievable. I don't think I'm ready for Mionel. It would be very interesting but, it'd seem like she's playing Jonathan Kent.

maybe sorrow does crazy things to heart and mind.
maybe she is not thinking and does not want to be alone for the first time during the holidays.
death of a spouse does crazy things .
has martha gained weight since last season? she seemed a lil bigger than before

When martha came to lionel's office.. I thought she was Braniac in disguise. Has everyone forgot, he can change his appearance and mimmic anyone at will?

I wish it were Brainiac in disguise. That could explain why she has changed so much.
from Crusade-
Martha: You dont want to get sucked into Lionel's web.
Lois: How did you escape unscathed?
Martha: I didn't.
Jonathan Kent, watching from heaven, must be pretty mad that his beloved wife now is interested in the convicted murderer and cutthroat business tycoon who caused his death, especially when Martha is aware of all these facts.

I reallly don't wanna believe thats her. Maybe Lionel has her possessed or something, but they really need to NOT go this route... I have a feeling Lionel is going to burn Martha and Clark really bad, considering he could well in fact still be evil in some way and he seems to have earned their trust...

Maybe if we're lucky Lionel dies this season! I mean they had us so stoked in late season 3 when we found out that liver disease was going to cause him a slow and painful death but then after that "Transference" episode they pulled a 180 on us.

Johnthan has not been dead long enough for her to start up with his worst enemy Lionel. Johnthan and Martha were soulmates and it should take her sometime before she is ready for another man in her life. I know J is rolling around in his grave at the fact Lionel is their eating Thanksgiving with Martha and Clark. I never would have thought that would happen!

Jonathon Kent rolling around in his grave? OMG, now there's a creepy mental image I'm gonna be dreaming about!

I agree that Martha didn't seem like herself at all in this episode...like she was possessed or something. Especially when she came into his office with her hair and makeup all done up...I thought she was gonna pull a shut-up-and-kiss-me with Lionel...seriously. O_O

When? Where? I didn't see that. I saw him trying to explain something to JK, and JK getting overwrought and having a heart attack because of his weak heart from the powers he had....

I liked Lionel stopping by and having dinner, but as a family friend. I would like them to keep it like that. That was a strange assortment of characters at that dinner table. Seeing Chloe & Clark eat dinner with Lionel was wierd given what they were doing 3 seasons ago. I loved how they had them sitting all close together while Lex & Lana were at opposite ends of the table (like Bruce Wayne & Vicky Vale in the 1989 Batman movie).

I was glad they did not kiss but she did seem a bit out of character in the episode. But we did know their would be martha lionel romance this season so here we start to go.

"played a significant role" in Jonathan's death, if you wish
Even if we can take at face value that that's what Lionel intended all along, it was a pretty villainous way to try explain it back in Reckoning. It sounded for all the world like a blackmail attempt, which of course everyone thought it was until Lionel gave his side of the story in a later ep.
JK's reaction is understandable given MB's track record of evil and previous investigations of Clark and the caves.
Point is, you'd think that his involvement in the death of her husband of 20+ years would be yet another strike against Martha's having romantic interest in Lionel.

i still think, martha and clark still don't trust lionel. that's why martha wants to be close to him and keep an eye on him. earn his trust, see what he's up to.

I screamed last night when it looked like they were going to kiss. Considering that Lionel WAS there when Jonathon died, and has always been the biggest enimy to her beloved husband, it is NOT approperate for her to hook up with Lionel, especially THIS soon.
I hope they do NOT go this route with the characters, because it feels like she's commiting a dirty act, even though Jonathans dead, it doesn't feel right.

Exactly. And martha is supposed to be a smart woman, lawyer and all...
I don't get it: she knows about Lionel's past...

I wouldn't worry. They might flirt with the situation but nothing will ever happen. I am sure of it.

This was the one thing this episode that really got to me. I don't mind Lionel pinning for Martha--I can stand Martha trying to be his friend (she is a Kent, and the Kents do this forgiveness, redemption-thing a lot), but NO MIONEL!
The scene in the kitchen almost made me puke a little. When she came to his office, I'm glad that she explained herself, but yikes!
I didn't even like Lionel there for Thanksgiving. Sitting beside Chloe who he tried to kill in Season 4? I really liked Clark's speech, and it was a sweet scene, but Lionel looks so out of place there. I really hope they don't push this farther than they have.

I also puked, almost... Did she really explain herself? Not really, IMO... Still out of character.

Well, what exactly has Martha done ?
They are friends and yes HE wants more, always has, but he knows that the door is closed.
I didn't see anything that made me feel otherwise.
The fact that they have "accepted" Lionel is logiocal, considering all that has happend and all that he knows.
I am sure there is still doubts in their minds, but no doubt that Lionel has become a friend of the family.
As for Chloe, he saved her bacon bigtime, I am sure she hasn't ( nor should she) forget that.
Then again, if I was them I would want Lionel close to me, very close, if for no other reason than to keep an eye on him.
I doubt that is the case though, it seems that they are a trusting lot and this may yet prove to backfire, or maybe not.
Time will tell.
But to insinuate in inappropriateness in regards to Martha seems a tad premature.

Man, when they almost kissed I was screamiing at the TV "DON'T DO IT!!!!" It just feels wrong. What is going on here? Jonathon needs to reappear and set his woman straight.
Probably the Jor-El possession thing is why deep rooted Martha feels an attraction to the guy is both a friend and an enemy.

That is still a grey area, if anything, we will never know why Lionel showed the pic to Johnathan.
Nevertheless, I doubt anything will come of this, Lionel is not long for this world and then there is always Ben Hubbard.

This is WHY Lionel needs to be EVIL (if not now, later). If he's not, then what's the point of Pa Kent's death? All it does is show a father who went overboard, and it caused his heartache. Pointless.
Besides, didn't Jonathon tell Clark that Clark needed to protect his mom from Lionel in Void?
I think I could have lived with the dinner, even with Martha inviting Lionel, if Clark had given a tiny somber look at Lionel like, "I know I have to tolerate you, but I don't have to like it."
I will say one GOOD thing about Lionel being there...I loved how he reacted to Clark giving thanks for his mother and father. I could swear there was a deep seed of jealousy in Lionel. He seems desperate to get in good with both Martha and Clark.

Wow, not a lot of Mionel lovers out there. I feel all alone since I'm pretty psyched about this new deveopment (I haven't actually seen this episode yet, I have to wait until Sunday).
I could go on about character redemption and and why this isn't a horrible pairing but unfortunately I've got a paper to write for school so i'll just be juvenile and say "YAY!"

This is what I'm thinking. When she came into Lionels office, she seemed possessed and hell bent on getting him to come over for dinner.
Her backbone seemed much stronger when Johnathan was alive.

The almost kiss scene made my head hurt. The office scene made me decide not to take Martha Kent seriously for the rest of the series. Blech.
