Smallville, OC, One Tree Hill. The three biggest teen american shows to have hit the UK...OC and One Tree Hill both have three series in the bank and are working on thier forth and let's face it they're not getting better with time. Smallville on the other hand is six seasons in and I still love it to pieces, so I've been thinking why is this?
Is it because Smallville is not just based on one or more relationships?
However good the episodes of OC and OTH are we as an audiance tend to care more about the Kandy or the Naley or the SethSummer and RyanMarrisa relationships. Let's face it we don't exactly watch the episode for the episode, we want to know if they really think they can break up Seth and Summer AGAIN or push the Brooke/Lucas/Peyton love triangle AGAIN. Smallville on the other hand does have relationships as a major part of the episodes but it doesn't feel as if they are the most important thing.
Is it because Smallville has a 'future'? OC and OTH seem to have hit the major problem of college and what happens next, because seriously we're not going to keep watching what happens to Seth and Summer in the big scary world of Rhode Island for the next four years. Smallville has a purpose, we know that at the end of the day Clark will be Superman and will end up married to Lois Lane, in other words it has a 'purpose'.
Is it because, shockingly, Smallville seems the most relalistic? We're not all mega rich, we don't all have cotillions and multiple parties, we don't all play with our half brothers on the basketball team just like Daddy did. Sure we don't have superpowers but like Clark we're just trying to be normal and grow up.
Is it the drama? We aren't really expected to believe that there was a spaceship being hidden in the warehouse but OC and OTH expect us to believe every plot twist they give us. Because we aren't expected to believe Smallville's plots we accept them, on the other hand we are expected to believe the drama in OTH and OC. And it just doesnt work.
Or is it something else? What do you think?
