Why did a phantom make a crater?

I liked the episode; I'm really liking this season, but one thing is still nagging at me from last night's episode...

How did a ghost make a crater? I don't think anything came out of the zone with him...

I probably would think that the writers feel that the craters were from the energy/force that everyone was sucked out of the phantom zone would cause this when they finally 'landed/ crashed'

When you see the big explosion in the atmosphere, you see streaking balls of flame landing on Earth. One was Clark, the others phantoms.

Doesn't the fact that they are streaking mean that there is some solid matter passing through the atmosphere at a high velocity?

If that's the case, it would only make sense you get a crater impact. If they are just balls of energy hitting the ground, same thing...it should leave some type of crater from the force of impact.

Yeah, all energy is matter. Even just a cloud of electrons is matter. I would imagine it would be like a ginormous lightning bolt.

I think if a phantom can physically attack Clark in the zone then there's a little more substance to them then spirit. They would definitely make a crater on earth.
