Why do you think he has that book filled with kryptonian words - letters? He already lied to Clark when he said he couldn't translate or understand kryptonian anymore. Is he back to his old ways?

There's not enough information to tell. The writers are actually doing a great job with the ambiguity of his nature.

Back to his old ways in researching the language, yes, but clearly not in the intent with Duncan. I mean, his decisions with Duncan were part of Lionel's past. I didn't see Lionel as feverishly attending to Duncan's care.
But my question is, when the fortress is back and running, how will that impact Lionel. Any thoughts?

"Its just a scrap book and he was reliving old memories with fondness, no wonder he was in the mood for a Formage souflee!" Hahahahaha. :)

He may be proud of Lex still feeling a sense of remorse for Duncan, rather than proud of Lex turning evil. Know what I'm saying? Maybe he's smiling because he's happy that Lex still cares.
Also, at the very last second of that scene, I noticed his smile started to turn into an expression of perhaps nervousness, but I'm not sure. I'll have to rewatch it again and see.
