I was taken back at the way Clark walked up to Lionel and they shook hands and all of a sudden have this common ground they stand on... I know it has been building but the "TEAM" thing... Lionel shaping Clark in a way he never shaped Lex by directiong his focus in a productive way and sending him off to find the missing necklace... and clark cluing in to the remark at the end... the look on his face was as if he enjoyed the push and the pat on the back with no sceond thoughts...

Lionel was willing to die for Martha and to keep Clark's secret, I think Clark appreciates that.
Though I don't think he trusts Lionel 100%, heck I don't think Clark trusts anyone 100%.
Smart Boy in that regard.

True story. Plus, it's not like he has much choice but to trust Lionel at least to some extent. Lionel knows everything about Clark and Clark knows it. Better to keep Lionel close. Like has been said, "Keep your friends close and your enemies even closer." Right now, I 'm not sure Clark knows which category in which to place Lionel. By the way, me neither.
Wanted to make the same thread. Isn't it the first time they shook hands? Imo it was cool :)

I like the current relationship between Clark and Lionel. Don't get me wrong. I loved it when he was unquestionably the MB, but this is an interesting development, and I'm still not sure what to make of it.
I’ll be really annoyed if he is a good guy in the end . There must be a limit to so called plot inconsistency. I still remember what Jonathan said to Clark in Void “I am so very proud that I died protecting you. Protecting me from what? Lionel Luthor, Clark. He knows your secret. He knows everything. You can't stay here, son. You've got to keep your mother safe.” And about saving Martha , Clark had some suspicions about it and so did I. Clark:” Unless you knew the gun wasn't loaded.”

I think it's what Lex said, Lionel really believes that he is a good guy now. Lionel will either revert back to his old self at some point or he will end up being killed by Lex because Lionel is against him. Lionel will probably get killed either way, but the real question is will he become evil again and or stay this way until the end of the show.

I would like if he tried to be good and believed so but reverted to his old ways. To me, if he became good it would look like Lionel had to turn good in order for Lex to look like the villian. Rather them both face off and have Lex winning in the end.

lex will kill him I don't think lionel will turn again he has seen the evil that lex is capable of and I think that lex scares him!

In complete agreement. There is something sinister within Lionel, but the question is--is he trying to fight it, or is he endulging in it.
Clark is giving Lionel the benefit of the doubt, it seems. He clearly doesn't trust him (or at least, that trust is holding on by a thin string).
I liked the scene. Shaking hands I thought it showed Clark as a polite young man, and it seems Lionel has an admiration for him by the way he covered his other hand on top of the hand shake.
That's just me.

THEM SHAKING HANDS TOTALLY FREAKED ME OUT!!!
As much as I love Lionel’s character I simply can’t understand why people are not screaming MURDERER at him and throwing eggs and tomatoes as he walks by. Memory lost I supposed.

Maybe he will use him MB mannerism and power hungry ways to protect Clark. It would be kind of cool to see this happening with Clark being grateful to an extent while at the same time being against his methods. It would create a cool struggle.

And I'm wondering about the last scene between Lex and Lionel. Who is fooling whom? Lex coming off to Lionel that Dad is merely faking his good nature and winning the trust of the Kents for their evil plan....or is Lionel just keeping his main enemy (his own son) close by such appearances?
This is better than reality shows (which I don't watch anyway!!!)

I see what you're saying, but it wouldn't exactly be character inconsistency. Want to know how it may not be? Check out my thread that is called "MY NEW LIONEL THEORY". It's a thread I'm starting on this episode. Tell me what you think. :)

I have to believe that for Lex to kill Lionel it would make sense if Lionel died a good guy, showing the evilness in Lex.

I still think Lionel is channeling a bit of Jor El.
Even after he said the link between them was gone, he was still writing Kryptonian symbols.
If he was REALLY still evil, I think he would have told his son he could read the symbols.

Well I can't agree with that either because as Clark says, Lionel would never level the playing field.
I also believed Lionel when he said he lost the connection being that Jor-el is temporarily gone.
I also think that being released by Jor-el that Lionel can piece together stuff Jor-el probably wouldn't let him before. I think that since he's been writing for a year now, he is figuring some things out. The only question is, for who's agenda, Lionel's or for Clark.

Yeah, especially Martha...
Can you imagine them becoming a couple?!?
I mean she's a state senator and he's a murderer, for crying out loud...

I hope Martha and Lionel don't become a couple. It's really too soon, I think, seeing that Jonathan's death is considerably recent. Also, I think Martha, as much as she likes Lionel deep down, would not go out with him because she would not trust him and her moral standards are too high for Lionel to live up to anyways.
I did love the Lionel/Clark interaction in this episode, though. I hope their relationship continues to flourish and Lionel becomes a mentor figure for Clark. But I also hope that Clark teaches some things to Lionel as well. Like Lionel should have an "ends justify the means" way of thinking like Green Arrow, but learn from Clark that idealism can be a good thing and is something the world ultimately needs. I think the two can learn so much from each other, and then Lex will kill Lionel, ultimately forever turning Clark against Lex and trying to expose him for the monster he is.

Yeah, that's why I am so mad at the writers for making Lois even suggest a relationship with Lionel (in the plane, 'vessel'). Please note this is not Lois-bashing, I am criticising the writers for feeding her such poor lines. Those are hurting her character IMO...

Yeah, I was shocked when I read about AM's podcast, where she says that Chloe takes the place of JK in the family, like a 'father figure'. What a load of cr@p... It is clear to me that only Lionel could play such a role. Would even be interesting as Lex would get jealous and Lionel, well you can never be sure of his motives...

I mean she's a state senator and he's a murderer, for crying out loud... Totally agree.
IMO he will never be a good guy. His crime list is just too long. He is responsible for killing his parents, the massacre at the lab in Crises, attempts on Clark (Memoria), Chloe and his dad’ life, killing Andrea’s mother, destroying a family ( don’t remember that guy name) in Mercy, putting his own son in mental institution, frying his brain and much more.
And Martha, who knows that and supposed to have high morals, is with him. Disgusting.
I think he has his own agenda and he is not good. He didn’t say anything to Clark about the black box. He knows that Clark is capable of taking/stealing it from the lab and this box is highly dangerous and would be safer in Clark’s hands. Lionel writers the word “power” in the end of Zod. The black box=power.
This season is about corrupting the good not only Lana but also Martha. I think Lionel will try to corrupt Martha. Jonathan warns Clark to keep her mother safe from Lionel which supports my theory.
