I can't stand that song. One of the absolute worst examples of ethnocentrism that I've ever heard in a modern song. Although I do love the line, "Well tonight thank God it's them instead of you!" Yes, thank god other people are miserable instead of me! Nice Christmas sentiment there.:p

My favorite Christmas song: The Holly and the Ivy. Harkens back to a time when Christmas wasn't the overly commercialized monster that it is today.

^I'm with you about Band Aid
My Number Two is Winter Wonderland. It's just so idyllic!

In terms of carols and real Christmas songs though I always loved Adeste Fideles or Oh Come all Ye Failful or whatever you prefer to call it

Erm... that line's meant to be taken as irony! It's about how people don't consider what's going on in the wider world, they just look at their relatively close circle.

I think the better irony is, do they CARE it's Christmas time? 33% of Ethiopians are Muslim...

For the record, my favourite is the aforementioned Fairytale of New York.

The reason for the famines their governments are often overlooked by the media hype. And I find the "Famine Relief" effort of the 80's was a temporary fix if anthing in a realm controled by opressive government. A nation without freedom cannot prosper and the people are doomed to poverty and opression no matter how many food drops you send them. The "Make Poverty History" effort sums up the inability of people to understand the cause of third world poverty and famine, and conversely, or even the cause of western prosperity. Yes, it is brilliant that millions of people are focused on how to end poverty in Africa. But "Make Poverty History" promotes the delusion that the solution to poverty is: Aid,Debt relief or Fair trade. And that: The main problem is to get the West (for example, the G8,) to change. In truth, the solution to poverty is: Democracy. Free speech and a free society. Capitalism. Free trade, not fair trade. And: The main problem is that Africa needs to change itself. Aid, Debt relief and Fair trade are not the answer To elaborate, aid and debt relief, when given to governments that care about their citizens, might do some good, at times of emergency at least (long-term aid may distort markets and cause harm). But poor countries do not have good governments, or they would not be poor. They have rotten governments, which stamp on political freedom and economic freedom. Aid and debt relief, when given to dictatorships like these, fuels civil wars, genocide, arms purchases and palace building; fills Swiss bank accounts; and distorts markets, often increasing poverty. Much of Third World poverty is the result of governments taking the decision, in effect, to remain poor. The conditions under which they can prosper are known, and available, if those in power choose to avail themselves of them. As Hernando de Soto points out, it is easy to make a country prosperous. It needs only security of life and property, and markets in which property rights can be valued and traded." If the Third World adopts science, democracy, and capitalism, then they will prosper.

i work in a store, and they play christmas music all the freaking time. i am so sick of hearing it!!! they play like 5 songs over and over again. and like 5 different verions of the same song. and these songs al loop and loop, so it is possible to hear the same version of the same song 4 times in an 8 hour shift. all i can every think towards christmas music anymore is MAKE IT STOP OMIGOSH!!!

.....but outside those songs, my favorites are Ave Maria and Carol of the bells.

There are many others as well... I like the old classic ones. Michael Buble - White Christmas is good too.

My current favorite is Andy Williams' "Happy Holidays" which is normal at the beginning but deteriorates into what must be satire:It's the holiday season
so whoop de doo
and dickory dock
and don't forget to hang up your sock

And I can't fathom that the 12 Days of Christmas wasn't meant to be entirely cynical. Okay, 40 gold rings you can at least put somewhere. 42 geese a-laying? 36 lords a-leaping? 40 maids a-milking? What the--?

"The twelve days of Christmas" was written to hide religious meaning during the time the Roman Catholics were not allowed to practice openly.

Something I was thinking about the other day... are those of you outside the UK aware of Wizzard's "I Wish it could be Christmas everyday" or Slade's "Merry Christmas Everybody"? Can't imagine a Christmas being the same without them over here.

Ugh, I HATE that song!! everyone at my work does. seriously, everytime it came on there would be some employee complaining about it.

if you listened to it 5 times in a 8 hour shift, you would hate it too.

You know there aren't really any bad Christmas songs.....

But then there is always an exception, isn't there?

I'm almost glad that the Christmas season is over for the lone fact that I won't have to hear the God-awful manheim steamroller version of Deck the Halls.
