Probably because he was doing a soap opera at the time.

He was good in Aqua but I'm not impressed by him so far in SV. He was pretty flat in that scene with Glover.

He's pretty good. He could be a little better at delivering his lines, though.

My only complaint is that his lines felt a little rushed. Overall, not bad.

So far so good...I think he's doing well with the character. It's just how they put the character into the story that I'm worried about. (No amount of acting is going to help if the story sucks beyond all belief)

I thought it was smooth acting, however he didnt seem like much of a convincing millionaire/billionaire around Lionel. But the acting was still smooth.

I didn't care for the Oliver vs. Lionel scene. JH's acting was monotonous and flat and it was hilarious when Oliver tried to intimidate Lionel. I kept wanting Lionel to say something really, really cutting to him.

I think that was the first time I actually saw an actor get better during the scene. The first few lines I thought he struggled a little, but really did a great job overall.

I can't really judge him just yet since his parts in sneeze wasn't big but by wither I can say more.I did like the scene wit lionel tho but that may just be because of JG great actin...I won't pass judgement on oliver just yet,he does have a cocky vibe tho and I kind of like that.Maybe he'll be sumthin serious when we actually see Ga but tonight tho it wasn't much

Here's what I posted about Justin's acting in the review thread:

I was distracted by Ollie's first scene until I realized what he was doing. Pay close attention to the conversation and Lionel's part about Ollie's acting in school plays. Justin wasn't acting like Ollie, he was acting like Ollie playing a part in order to fool Lionel, and Lionel saw right through it, just as we the audience did.

Bearing in mind what was really going on in that scene, Justin did a wonderful job portraying it.

Lightning Flash

I was getting in the impression that Ollie was being sarcastic the whole time he was talking to Lionel... I thought Justin did an awesome job.

I realize that was what Justin was trying to convey, but IMO he totally failed to sell it and just ended up wooden all around. And he was also stiff and wooden in the scene at the end with his minion. I don't know, maybe his acting will improve some in the next episode, but I certainly was not impressed with it in this episode.

I have to agree w/MBCorp; he was very stiff and added no style to the role. I was not impressed at all.
I hope he gets better soon because if not it’s going to be a long season with this arc if he can’t put some flair into it.

He was better in Aquaman.

I little stiff in this episode. He was stiff in Aquaman at points but not as much.

Drew
10-06-2006, 11:43 AM
I wasn't impressed with him in Aquaman, and I have yet to be impressed by him yet. His acting is as stiff as a board.

Spoon AZ
10-06-2006, 12:16 PM
Some of his lines are delivered very well. Some just are flat as can be.

Sort of like Ritchson as Aquaman. Sometimes he knocks it out the park. Other times it's pretty weak.

10-06-2006, 12:18 PM
hm I really thought his acting was...odd. But maybe that's how the character is supposed to be. I voted "eh.."

s_q
10-06-2006, 12:20 PM
thanks, i wanted to hear or read this too that his acting was stiff. But after reading that he has that sarcastic personality, i think he acted off very well. I hated his acting in aquaman, hopefully he wont be as stiff in remaining episodes.

silverfist
10-06-2006, 12:41 PM
In the convo with lionel, I just couldn't figure out if he was the worst actor so far in the show, of if he was just 100% sarcastic in everything he said in that scene. I think he was sarcastic...but it sure looked weird, since lionel acted totally different than him.

s_q
10-06-2006, 12:46 PM
As i said, being sarcastic is his character. his real self is when he speaks to the dude in the end. he seems relaxed and was not "stiff" persay. With Lionel, his body language was so amazing, like he didnt give a crap to whatever hapens to Lionel or Lex. But my concern is that i hope that the wya he acted there was just an act within an act and not his real character. Hopefully he'll be more relaxed in conversations with other characters of the show.

Did anyone else feel he was a bit like Brandon from the Superman Returns movie (in superman mode) ? - I thought his appearance and voice in the scene with Lionel sort of gave that feeling.

I loved his acting... maybe I'm alone on that factor.

But Oliver's not suposed to be very emotional, it's just who he is. He's more of a hidden personality type. And he's sarcastic, and serious. I think we'll see his softer, more charismatic side with Lois. But until then, this is how the character is.

I thought he did a great job.

"Lex has been abducted? Oh my."
"Wouldn't want that, would we?"

Lines... were something like that

Spoon AZ
10-06-2006, 05:24 PM
"Lex has been abducted? Oh my."

It was good line delivery like this that made me think he had potential.

He had some good deliveries but his performance was very inconsistent.

I'll blame the director for now. We'll see how he does next week.

I think that JG and JH scene was sweet! I couldnt help but chuckle a little bit when JH said, "My God!" Too good!

10-06-2006, 07:16 PM
Bad. I've called him a cardboard cutout already and he wasn't that exciting. I don't think he particularly hot either but what we saw of him was not exciting at all. Didn't mesh well with Lionel although I think that whole scene was rushed, with Lionel jumping to threats too soon. ANyway, not worth all the pimpage so far. ANother miscasting.

Michael Rosenbaum was actually believable as a smart, boy, billionaire.

I thought he was doing the Aquaman impression from season 5. All we needed was a good "bro".
Does the boy really need the hair gel. His acting and mannerisms were stiff and boring. Where is James M. when you need him. Offer him more money, dump Jimmy and Ollie and bring him back.

It was his first ep give the guy a break, let him get used to acting on Smallville. I think he did okay. He seemed a little eh because he isn't an actor like Glover.

i'm by no means trying to bash justin hartley's skill, but at times, his performance seemed robotic to me..sometimes, almost forced.

it's a new character for him and there's the rest of the season for him to settle into this character, so i'm not worried.

once again, i'm not trying to bash justin hartley.

I think Oliver's supposed to be one of those super-cool, sarkastic types. That's why he seemed robotic. Actually, it looks like his conversations with Lionel are going to be a lot like those good-old verbal fights Lionel and Lex always used to have, about ancient warfare and Alexander the great and what have you... That used to be good writing (and good acting!), by times. Oh, how much I miss evil Lionel

Wow...
I though he kinda sucked... It screamed I came from Passions! I can see him growing into it and getting better as he works more and more with seasoned actors... but he was out classed in the Lionel (John Glover) scene... I'll give him time...

Wingz Of Steel
10-10-2006, 03:38 PM
Justin Hartley did not impress me in his first performance. You only get once to make a first impression and he was completely overwhelmed it seemed in his exchanges with John Glover. Once scene in particular when he steps closer to tell Lionel "I'm involved in many ventures, but kidnapping is not one of them.." I almost had to look away as I was a bit embarrassed for him (His timing was quite off). I've seen him give better performances on his insane soap opera than in this ep. He seems to be best IMO when being confident, volatile, and shrewed. I expect him to do a better job in the weeks to come and will chalk this up to first-ep jitters. I actually do like him as a character but he must do a better job or it will become clearer and clearer why Aquaman was cancelled.

i love u tom

He looks like a blond Ben Affleck, I say!

Oh wait, I'm supposed to focus on his acting, not his piercing gaze, his sexy clefted chin, his beautiful cheekbones... Er... What was I talking about again? Oh yes...

Acting was okay. Definitely not a Glover, but definitely not an Alan Ritchson.
