I really don't like the fact that Lex feels so guilty for everything that happened. I know that this is the only way to play his character at this point, but this is only going to soften him up until he builds back his evilness again down the road. I have no doubt that later this season, he will do many evil things, but for the time being, it looks like he is going to be a soft character who gets kidnapped next week from what we saw in the trailer. We'll see what they do with this, I just don't like this back and forth with Lex's character. One minute he is torturing someone, the next minute the writers try to make the audience feel bad for him, then he is evil again, now he feels guilty for what he did even though he didn't even do it. It's like, pick a path to take this character and keep to it rather than bouncing around so Lana can stay by his side.

He's never been evil enough yet to be a complete uncaring sociopath. It's always been a slow build-up, I don't see him as being reversed.

I too would like to see Lex kick some more arse this season and really grow strong as a villain. I hope somehow he proves his villainous side in the upcoming episode. From the preview, it appears he is just being kidnapped and just a victim, but maybe there's more to it? Maybe he'll turn the tables, and pull some very ruthless tactics.

Overall, though, I think it's BETTER that Al and Miles have made his progression this slow and continued to go back and forth to show the back and forth nature of Lex's character. After all, he is in a constant struggle between good and evil. Realistically speaking, he wouldn't just suddenly give up and become the Lex Luthor we all know from the comics. It makes more sense this way that he still DOES care for humanity in some twisted way, and he does just want love from Lana, Clark, and his father. But we also have seen the foreshadowing for his other side in episodes like "Aqua" and "Cyborg". In reality, we don't just decide to become a hero or become evil. It's the same way with Clark. While he doesn't do bad things like Lex, there are times when he makes collosal mistakes, times that he questions even wanting to live this life as a hero, so he goes back and forth as well. This back and forth nature is part of our humanity, and truly humanizes the characters. As long as they don't make it TOO unbelievable. Example: You wouldn't see Lex torturing AC in one episode and then in the next Lex being TOTALLY back to his old, normal self from season one. Even if he didn't do anything bad in the next epsiode, you'd still see that evil glint in his eye, or maybe just one line to indicate that he's not all peaches and cream anymore.

And now that Lex is going to become obsessed with unlocking the mystery of Zod, it appears us Luthor fans will finally get to see more of that dark side come out. According to Al and Miles, Lex "embraces his destiny this year" and the theme of the season is "the rise of Lex Luthor."
