Where did Clark disappear to between S3 and S4?

I may just have missed it, but I'm not sure. Anyone know where Clark disappeared to for 3 months between Season 3 and 4?

He was trapped in the rift of the cave wall, or perhaps the yet-to-be-created Fortress of Solitude, being transformed into what he believes to be a different person (I belive it's just his destiny trying to fulfill itself)...In this rift, he was recieving instruction about his past, future, and about Krypton from Jor-el and whoevder else may have been in there.

Mmmm....

Clark did say he was in a place that felt like home. And he was angry when he remembered how Jonathan tried to stop him from "being reborn." Good question.
