This is just going to be a two-part fic, very short for me. It's something I felt I needed to post before Season 6 started.

Once Again

Chapter 1

Lana found the locked Windows folder completely by accident. Lex was out of town for the weekend on a emergency business trip, so she was using the solitude of his library, and the high-speed internet connection of his computer, to do some research for a term paper in English when she stumbled upon a folder labeled ‘Research.’

Having been given the run of the house by Lex and knowing that he trusted her with everything, something that gave her a warm feeling every time she thought about it, Lana decided to see what was in this blandly titled folder. A quick double click of the touch pad on the folder icon should have opened it for her, but instead, she received a message: “Access Denied. Please enter the password to view the contents of this folder.”

Lana later supposed that rooming with Chloe two different times in her life must have rubbed off on her, because seeing ‘Access Denied’ was like waving a red cape in front of a bull. She tried several different variations of her name, Lex’s mother’s name, even the name of Lex’s long-dead baby brother, Julian, but nothing worked until, on a whim, she tried ‘Clark Kent.’

Bingo! she thought as the folder opened. The list of files went way down past the bottom edge of the screen. She clicked the first file and was rewarded with a computer-generated wire diagram of what appeared to be a car accident. The next file contained several pictures of a demolished Porsche, and the file after that contained a summary of an investigation into the accident. Lana quickly skimmed the summary and noticed Clark’s name several times, finally realizing that this must be the famous wreck where Clark saved Lex’s life and they first met.

A second and more careful read, along with another look at the computer diagram, seemed to indicate that Lex had actually hit Clark at more than 60 miles per hour before hurtling off the bridge and into the creek below. That can’t be right, Lana thought, Clark always said Lex missed him and he jumped in after him. Of course, Clark always has had some trouble with the truth. Except, if he did get hit by the Porsche at that speed, he should be dead. Shouldn’t he?

After that, Lana checked more files and found that every single one was about Clark. There was the text of an incomplete investigation by an off-duty F.B.I. agent named Loder that had apparently been originally made for Lionel. Another file contained a security camera recording from what looked like a science lab. Chloe and Clark were recognizable in the low-res picture, when suddenly, an overhead walkway collapsed, sending a rain of concrete and steel plunging toward them. She could see Clark dive to cover Chloe, and Lana felt herself holding her breath even though she knew from the file date that this had been recorded more than a year ago. When Clark and Chloe were buried by the rubble, Lana couldn’t imagine how they had managed to survive…and then, Clark stood up, apparently unmarked, handling the concrete chunks as if they were Styrofoam.

After inhaling a deep breath, Lana’s jaw was hanging as low as possible. Here in front of her were some of the answers about Clark she had longed for. She had always suspected his abilities, but to have the proof placed in front of her was mind-blowing. The rest of her time was spent just clicking and scrolling through the many files. With each file about Clark, the depth of Lex’s obsession with him became more and more apparent. Her next shock was finding, in a file labeled ‘Test,’ evidence that Lex was responsible for arranging the release of the meteor freaks that had terrorized her, Clark, and the Kents the summer before last.

Though it had happened more than a year ago, Lana remembered that day clearly. It had started innocently enough, with everyone in the area helping out at a barn raising. When they had run out of nails, Clark had gone back to the Kent farm to get some and she had joined him, at least partly so she could stay away from Lex. Strange, she thought, that day I trusted Clark with all my heart and Lex was the one I couldn’t trust. Humph, after seeing all of this, maybe I still can’t trust him.

Playful flirting along the way had led to something more on the old couch in the loft of the Kent barn…only, Larry, Moe, and Curly came along and interrupted them. Then came a long day, fraught with tension and fear. But she remembered holding onto the hope…no, the certainty, that Clark would save them like he always did. And save them he did. He’s not always there when you want him, Lana thought, but he’s always there when you need him.

Finally reaching the bottom of the folder, Lana sat back in the leather desk chair, feeling like her world had come to an abrupt end, for the third time in her life. There, staring back at her on Lex’s 15.4-inch widescreen LCD laptop computer monitor, was the indisputable proof. So much for him not being interested in a farm boy like Clark anymore, Lana thought. She was incredulous…volcanically angry…and hugely embarrassed.

That obsessive collection of information about Clark made it apparent that Lex was selective in what he trusted her with. More importantly, that folder also made it obvious that she didn’t know him nearly as well as she thought she did. Lex has piles of information on Clark, she thought. Oh God! I feel like such a moron. Clark was right. Lex played me for a fool. I wonder what else Clark was right about? Lana‘s last task with that folder was to send a copy of its contents to Chloe at the Daily Planet for safekeeping.

When Lex came back to the mansion early on Sunday morning, hoping to spend some quiet time with Lana, she was already packed and ready to go back to the Metropolis apartment she shared with Chloe. Mansion security had informed her he was on his way, so Lana had waited in the library for him. She wanted to give him one last chance to come clean, but when she brought up Clark in their conversation, Lex continued to play as if Clark was of no interest to him. As far as Lana was concerned, that was the last straw. She turned on Lex and let him have it.

She led him to the computer and called up the supposedly secure folder, scrolling down the list of file after file. Stabbing at the screen with a finger, once she came to the end, Lana turned to him and asked, “How do you explain this if you‘re not interested in Clark?”

Lex had actually gotten visibly angry when he first saw that Lana had accessed his secret folder, but by the time she finished scrolling to the bottom and turned to face him, a calm, cool, and collected veneer once again covered his face.

Damage control will be tough now, Lex thought, but not impossible. Between Clark and me, Lana seems to have a thing for liars, no matter how much she says otherwise.

But damage control was well beyond possible for Lex. Lana wouldn’t let him explain away his systematic collection of information, especially since his malicious attack on Clark almost got the Kents and herself killed during his ‘test.’

Their fight became louder the longer it went on, until even Lex’s cool façade had disappeared. Lex tried to hold on to Lana, unwilling to let her literally walk out of his life, but the self-defense training he had provided for her almost four years ago came back to bite in him in the balls…literally. Lana’s knee connected flush with Lex’s crotch and he collapsed like a marionette whose strings had been cut.

Once Lana made it off of the mansion grounds, she started crying. Crying and driving at highway speeds weren’t compatible in her mind, so she stopped at the Talon for a cup of coffee while she brought her emotions under control for the long drive home.

By the time Lex felt capable of running after Lana, she was already gone, headed for Smallville, and eventually, Metropolis. Sensing it would do no good to try and follow her right now, Lex let her go, figuring he’d be able to spin this in such a way that she would come back to him soon. After all, he thought, Lana has this deep-seated need to be with somebody. Being all alone isn’t possible for her.

At the Talon, Lana hid herself at a back table, hoping no one she knew would come in while she there. Not likely for a town of this size where she knew a lot of people, but she had hopes…hopes which were shattered when the next to last person she wanted to see walked in and placed an order, Clark Kent.

Lana looked around for something to hide behind before Clark saw her but there were no plastic plants nearby and the restroom was too far away for her to make it unseen. Given their recent history, Clark started to turn away from Lana once he saw her, something that would have been unthinkable as little as six months earlier. He stopped when he noticed she had been crying. Even though they were no longer dating, and their friendship was virtually non-existent, there was something inside him that could not stand to see Lana in pain. So when he collected his drink, he made his way over to her table to try to help.

“Hi, Lana,” Clark said tentatively. “What’s wrong?”

Not willing to look up at him right now, Lana grudgingly said, “Hi, Clark.”

“May I sit down?”

“If you must.”

“I must.” Once he had seated himself, he said, “Now tell me what’s wrong. I know our friendship is a little…strained… right now, but we are still friends and seeing one of my few true friends cry eats me up inside.”

Knowing Clark well enough to know he was not going away until she talked to him, Lana said, “Everything’s so messed up, that I don’t even know where to start.”

Trying for a small laugh to help loosen her mood, Clark said, “I find that the beginning is almost always a good place to start.” Lana was wadding her already soaked hanky in her hands, so Clark reached across and handed her a clean one from his back pocket. “Should I call Lex to come get you?”

“No!” Lana blurted out. “He’s the problem!”

That simple statement caused a surge of conflicting thoughts and emotions inside Clark‘s head. He was happy that Lana appeared to be seeing the light where Lex was concerned, sad that she had been hurt once again, angry that Lex had done something to her, and even a little bit vindicated for his warning about Lex.

“But it’s not just about Lex…it’s also about you, Clark.”

Suddenly afraid of where this conversation might lead, Clark said, “I think we ought to talk about this privately. Don’t you?” When Lana nodded yes, Clark smiled and said, “Meet me at my house, and we’ll talk in the kitchen. Mom’s still in Topeka, so we’ll have the place to ourselves.”

“O-Okay,” Lana said shakily.

Seeing the way she acted, Clark wondered if she was really ready to be behind the wheel of a car, so he stopped and said, “On second thought, climb in my truck and I’ll drive.”

A small smile escaped her lips for the first time since she left Lex’s, and as she waited for Clark to open her door, she said, “Thank you, Clark.”

Minutes later, they were sitting on opposite sides of the Kent dinner table. Clark had poured two glasses of lemonade and Lana’s hands closed tightly around her glass. Knowing that the first words had to be from her, Clark waited patiently for her to begin.

Lana still was having a hard time meeting Clark’s eyes, so she stared at the age-scarred surface of the table as she tried to think of what to say.

“I guess…I guess the first thing to say is, I’m sorry.” Clark rocked back in his seat. Of all the things he had expected to hear, an apology wasn’t one of them. Unaware of Clark’s reaction, Lana pushed ahead. “I disregarded your warnings about Lex and, in the process, said some things in anger I’ve come to regret. You were right about Lex.”

“Oh, Lana, I’m so sorry this had to happen to you. I could have been happy for you if you had chosen any man other than Lex.”

Lana finally looked up, and Clark could see the pain in her eyes. “I’m not done yet, Clark. I found Lex’s secret files on you. It had everything from the car accident where you saved his life, to a lab accident where you and Chloe should have been crushed by concrete and steel, to the fact that Lex arranged for those three meteor freaks to attack you here at the farm. There’s lots of other stuff, but I didn’t have time to do a detailed read of every file, so I sent copies of everything to Chloe yesterday. She should have finished reading it all by now.”

“Damn,” Clark said as he pounded his right fist into his left palm, “I didn’t know he had that much on me.” And then one more thought struck him, one that Lana had been waiting for him to have. “Oh! So, umm, so you saw a tape of me and Chloe…?”

“Yeah. I did. I know now. You handled that concrete like it was made of Styrofoam.” Lana quickly shook her head as if in disbelief. “I’ve always suspected you had abilities, ever since the tornado, but you would never confide in me. Why?”

Clark was surprised how quickly the focus of the conversation had turned from her to him. Now it was his turn to look away as he said, “Originally, I was a fifteen-year-old high school freshman who was deathly scared that the girl he loved would run screaming if she ever learned the truth. Once Pete got run out of town by people trying to learn my secrets, my reasons changed. After that, I knew telling you would put you in danger.”

“You told Pete?”

Clark waved that off as being inconsequential to his story and continued, “Finally, when I found you in Lex’s library, shortly after the second meteor shower, I lost all of my abilities. It was great. I could finally risk a real relationship with you. There were no more secrets to hide.” Looking wistfully at Lana’s face, Clark said, “Those months were the happiest months of my life.”

Lana smiled warmly and said, “For me too.”

Clark smiled in response. “Then, I died. I remember you being at my bedside and me taking one last look at you before the end.”

“That was one of the worst days of my life, Clark…and then, you came back, as if nothing had happened. And everything was right again.”

“But as you later noted, things weren’t quite the same between us anymore. Among other things, we never again made love. I know you didn’t like that, but that was a conscious decision on my part. I couldn’t risk injuring you if I lost control of my abilities in the throes of passion. More importantly, I couldn’t do that with you anymore until you finally knew my secrets. You see, the day I died, I regained all of my abilities.”

“How?”

“My father, my biological father, restored them to me when he restored my life.”

Lana was dumbfounded. She had always known when Clark was lying to her and this time, as incredible as it seemed, he was telling the truth.

“I guess you don’t have to tell me about your secrets anymore. I seem to know them. But one thing I would like to know is, when you broke up with me, why did you lie about not being in love with me anymore? That was more painful than watching you die, because you hurt me on purpose.”

No longer bothering to deny the truth, Clark said, “I lied to protect you from my secrets and those who would do anything to learn them."

"You mean, you wanted to save me from Lex."

“Yeah. I would have done anything to save you, even if that meant giving you up.” Clark paused then said, “The one thing I didn’t count on was you falling for the very guy I saved you from.”

“And look how that turned out. One of the most recent files on Lex’s computer seemed to indicate that he was investigating us while we were dating.”

“Since Lex knows some things about me and you know the same things, and Lex knows you know what he knows…”

“Is there a point to all this double talk, Clark?”

“Yes, before we go back to repairing our friendship, there’s one more subject I need to cover with you. It’s where I came from, how I got my abilities, and who my biological father is. I figure, since we aren’t dating anymore, I can finally tell this to you safely. Chloe learned it on accident last year and Lex has never come after her, so you ought to be safe, too.”

Mentally bracing herself, Lana asked, “Okay, what is it?”

Smiling to remember saying something similar to Lana earlier this year, Clark said, “Not here. Where were going, you’ll need to dress warmly. Oh, and don’t forget to bring a scarf and gloves.”

1st! That was great, Card. Lana discovers part of Clark's secret & confronts Lex. I loved how Lana handled Lex, using her Lana-Fu on him right where it counts - just the way he taught her! Ha! And then, it got even better with the great conversation between Clark & Lana, her apology, and him coming clean with her. Can't wait for Clark to take her to the FOS again & tell all. :):):) PPMS!

2nd

Some people are just too greedy (ambitious?) in the number of stories they have going at once. Makes updates to current stories less frequent.

I enjoyed the Lana-Fu. Very appropriate.

Just think, a simple book report accidently leads to Lana finding out how Lex had played her, as well as the complete truth (I hope!!!) about Clark.

Dressing warmly with a scarf and gloves? Hmm, I seem to remember this from another time. :p ;)

Is Clark going to let her know that this is Lana's second visit to the FOS? Because she is going to remember dressing warmly and the disappointment associated with the first time...

Looking forward to the finale!

If only this would happen. It would be a terrific scene in the show. It might be the highest rated episode of all time.

Cardinal, you have a better memory than the writers of SV.

I'm really looking forward to the 2nd part.

It's something I felt I needed to post before Season 6 started.

What? There's a season six? I hadn't noticed:rolleyes: Nice story, but even if that did happen in the real smallville, i stil wouldnt be able to watch it. They killed it! Along with their ratings:rotfl:

Cardinal??? Where's the rest??? I was all ready to soak this up. Come on!!!

No, really. This was great. I like a little snooping Lana. Makes her more real, more human. Not so.... perfect. Know what I mean? That nod at being around Chloe causing her nosiness was a hoot!!

I'm glad Lana confronted Lex. She should have. She has an uncanny ability to read peoples eyes and know when she's being lied to... this was great. I also like that Lex lost his demeanor. He wasn't able to stay 'cold' and aloof to Lana. She is a weakness of sorts for him. :\

And in walks Clark. I was excited. So often these two dance around each other, it was nice to see them seize the opportunity and nothing came in the way of Lana finally learning the truth.

Anyway, I hope he tells Lana about their other time in the FOS as well. It's time to tell her everything. They've hurt each other enough.

Post more soon, Cardinal... PLEASE!! :D

Was just re-reading part one (what can you do when it's the middle of the night and you’re desperate for a Clana fix) when I noticed the following:

From Clark:
*I could have been happy for you if you had chosen any man other than Lex
*before we go back to repairing our friendship . . .
*I figure, since we aren’t dating anymore, I can finally tell this to you safely

From Lana:
*that day I trusted Clark with all my heart . . . after seeing all of this, maybe I still can’t trust himAre you hinting at a conclusion I’m not going to like?

Once Again

Chapter 2

Once Clark had decided to tell Lana about Krypton, letting her know about his abilities was surprisingly easy…like super-speed. Clark told her to put her hair up in a tight bun for their trip. While she worked with her hair, he searched the hall closet for a knit winter cap for her to cover her hair with.

Lana was curious and a bit confused, but did as she was bidden. When Clark came back to her, holding out a white woolen cap for her just as she was pinning her hair in place, she took it in her hands and asked, “What’s this for? I’m not even dressed for the cold yet.”

As they stepped out the kitchen door, Clark smiled and said, “The hat isn’t to protect you from the cold, it’s to protect your hair from the wind.”

Lana gestured skyward and asked, “What wind, Clark? It’s calm outside tonight.”

“True. But you need to dress warmly, your clothes are in Metropolis, and we don’t want to wait six extra hours for you to drive the round trip, so…I’m taking you there the quick way.”

“What way is that?”

“A way that generates a whole lot of wind.” Clark dipped, lifting Lana with one arm beneath her knees and one under her shoulders. “Hold on to your hat…and keep your mouth closed.”

“Huh?” Lana’s hand moved to hold the hat in place, reflexively doing as Clark said.

“You’ll swallow fewer bugs that way. Trust me.”

And before Lana could answer him, they were off like a rocket. Her breath was taken away, but she wasn’t sure if it was because of the incredible speed at which they were moving, or if it was just that Clark was finally letting her all the way inside. He hadn’t been kidding about the wind either, which was much too strong for her to look forward, so she spent the entire trip wrapped in his arms, staring up at the sharply defined planes and angles of his chiseled face.

Sooner than she would have thought possible, the whirlwind ride stopped in the alley behind her apartment building. When Lana burst through the door to her apartment, Chloe was startled, jumped slightly, and then rushed over to Lana, picking up a thick stack of computer printouts on the way.

“Look, Lana,” Chloe said, “I’ve got everything printed out and I’ve made a few digital copies of those files, all of which are stored in safe locations, just in case Lex finds out you sent me the files and send his goons to erase my copies.”

“Thanks, Chloe, I don’t know what I would do without you.” Lana wanted to hug her roommate, but with the load of paper in Chloe’s arms, she settled for a quick squeeze from behind. “You and Clark were right about Lex. I’m sorry I didn’t listen to you.”

“That’s okay. You were hurting at the time, and believe me, I understand making misjudgments while under duress. ”

“That’s great to hear.” Lana pointed at the still-open doorway. “Apparently, he understands, too.”

Chloe’s head whipped around so fast that she looked like Linda Blair in The Exorcist. “Wha…you two? In the same room? At the same time?”

Clark came fully into the room, closing the door behind him, with only a small, satisfied smile betraying his emotional state. Lana hurried to her bedroom to dig through boxes of packed away winter wear for something warm while Clark gave Chloe an explanation of what had happened so far.

Chloe was worried about Lex, but Lex didn’t bother Clark anymore. He told her that Lex’s last hold on him was broken now that Lana wasn’t dating either one of them. Furthermore, he felt free to finally do what he had always wanted to do…let Lana in on his secrets.

“Are you sure, Clark?” Chloe asked apprehensively.

“Yeah. You’ve known since graduation and Lex has never come after you, so he shouldn’t come after Lana now that we aren’t dating. In any case, I need you as backup to tell one part of the story.”

“Which is…?”

“The day that happened twice. She only remembers the second time. Even though she’ll never regain the memory of that day, I want to tell her about it. I want her to know that for one day everything was…”

As Clark’s voice trailed off, Chloe ran a soothing hand up his upper arm and said, “Don’t worry Clark, I’ll support your story.”

Lana popped back out of her bedroom in record time. Normally, clothes selection could seemingly take her forever, but when Clark saw her outfit, he knew why she had been so quick: she had chosen the same exact outfit that she had worn on that fateful election day last winter.

“This is the second time I’ve worn this outfit when you had something special planned, Clark.” Lana winked up at him. “I hope this time works out a little bit better.”

Clark and Chloe shared a look and Clark said, “Actually, Lana, this is the third time you’ve worn that outfit for me, including the scarf and gloves.”

“No, it’s only the second time, I would remember.”

“Sorry, but it’s definitely the third time. That’s one of the things I need to tell you about.”

Clark looked to Chloe for support and she came through, saying, “He’s right, Lana. I don’t actually remember it happening myself, but he proved to me beyond any doubt that what he’s about to tell you really happened.”

Lana was completely bewildered, but, to her eyes, Clark appeared to be as sincere as he ever had been in his entire life. Chloe squeezed Clark’s hand once in a show of moral support and then chose to let her friends deal with the rest of this story one-on-one, the way Lana deserved to learn it. Grabbing her purse off the small table just inside the front door, Chloe said, “Take your time with the story, Clark, I won’t be back for a couple of hours…at least. I think Jimmy deserves a surprise visit.”

When the door clicked shut, Clark turned to Lana and said, “This is going to take a while, Lana, so you might want to sit down.” He took her carefully folded winter jacket off her arm and laid it on the back of the well-worn couch. Lana took one end of the couch and Clark took the other. Like he had said earlier to her, the beginning was always a good place to start, so that’s what he did.

“The last time I asked you to bring gloves and a scarf, I was afraid I was losing you. My secrets were splitting us apart. I had finally decided that letting you know everything and risking the slight chance that someone might come after you was preferable to the certainty that we would break up if I didn‘t tell you.

“What you remember from that day is that I got scared and changed my mind. You were justifiably angry with me when I backed down, and that was the beginning of the end for us. What you don’t remember is that was actually the second time you had come into my loft that day…or to be exact, it was the second time that day had happened,”

“You mean like the movie Groundhog Day?”

“Well…sort of. Except I only got to redo that day one time, and I made a mess of it.”

“Well, how did you get to have a do-over?”

Just remembering the circumstances of that second chance made Clark break out in a light sweat. “I asked, no…I begged my biological father to let me go back in time and fix what had happened the first time on election day.”

Even though that day was months in the past, Lana was becoming concerned. She unconsciously leaned toward Clark and asked, “What could have gone so wrong that you so desperately needed to fix it.”

Looking off into the distance, Clark quietly said, “You went wrong, or rather, Lex went wrong and you paid the ultimate price. Just as you remember me dying the day of the nuclear missile crisis, I remember you dying the night of the election.”

Lana sat back in shock, and said, “But I’m still here.”

Clark‘s eyes focused on Lana once more. “So am I, and yet, you saw me die, just as I saw you lying dead, in the middle of a rural intersection. The horror of that moment, of that entire night, is indelibly etched in my memory.”

Lana knew exactly what Clark meant. Watching him die was something she would never forget. She could still remember the washed out color of Clark’s face, the way the light shone in the room, and even the antiseptic smell of the room. Clark waited patiently for Lana to assimilate what he had told her. He could almost see the questions piling up behind her eyes.

Unable to make sense of the tangled web of information she had just received, Lana finally said, “I don’t understand. What happened that day? How did I die?”

“I’m sorry, maybe I should have just explained that day as it happened. So here it goes. The two…versions I guess you’d call them, of that election day, were the same right up to the point where you met me in the loft. I was scared out of my mind, but unlike what you remember, I told you everything you ever wanted to know about me. Just like I’m going to do tonight.

“After that, I, um…” Clark’s eyes glazed over and he reached up with one hand to loosen a shirt collar that suddenly felt uncomfortably tight. “…I proposedmarriagetoyou.”

Lana’s eyes popped wide open as she reached for Clark’s forearm. When she touched it, his eyes latched on to her and she said, “Run that by me one more time.” When Clark’s mouth moved to speak, Lana added, “Slowly.”

Clark blushed a bit at that, and said with exaggerated clarity and slowness, “I…proposed…marriage…to…you.”

“Really? What did I say?”

“Nothing. After realizing I had unfairly dumped too much on you at once, I asked you to not reply to my proposal. I wanted you to have all the time you needed to think about everything I had told you before you made any commitments. So…I brought you home and sent you on your way. I didn’t see you again until it was time for us to go to the Talon for the election party.

“We were going to meet at the Talon, but you chose to come out to the farm a little bit early so we could talk.” Clark’s face started taking on an look of contentment, maybe even joy, that Lana could rarely remember ever seeing from him. “I remember our exact words to this very day, it’s still the single happiest moment of my life.”

When it appeared that Clark was caught up in the moment, Lana impatiently asked, “Well? What did we say?”

“Oh. Umm, some of this won’t make any sense until after we make our visit tonight, but here goes. I asked, ‘Do I look different to you now?’ And you said, ‘Clark, you look like the same handsome guy I’ve always known.'" Clark shifted his position on the couch. “That made me really, really nervous, so I asked, ‘Handsome as in “I wanna spend the rest of my life with you?” or handsome as in “I’m gonna let you down easy?”’”

By now, Lana was hanging on Clark’s every word. “And…?”

“Waiting on pins and needles doesn’t even begin to explain my feelings at that point, and then you said, ‘As in, “Yes, Clark, I’ll marry you.”’ I had given you an engagement ring when I proposed, and when you said yes, you pulled the ring out of your pocket and let me slide it on your ring finger.” Clark paused as he enjoyed this happiest of memories. “The rest of the day was a happy blur. I do remember us showing off your ring to my parents, who were naturally thrilled to be gaining you as a daughter…and then, at the height of our happiness, things went wrong.” Clark began fishing for a nice way to describe what had happened next.

Lana made that unnecessary by bluntly asking, “How did I die?”

Clark bit his lower lip and then said, “When dad won the election, Lois pulled the whole family over to one side for a photo op. How I wish that I had dragged you along with me since you were just about to join the family.” Clark exhaled heavily, then said, “Apparently, you got a call from Lex during our photo op, because the next thing I knew, I was on the receiving end of a panicked phone call from you. You said you had gone to see Lex and he had somehow figured out that you knew all of my secrets. You left him, but he chased you down in one of his sports cars.

“All I could figure at the time was that, while trying to get away from him, and distracted by the cell phone, you didn’t see the school bus approaching. It hit you broadside at full speed, launching your SUV across the intersection. I heard the crunching metal and the shattering glass and I ran to the crash site at full speed, not caring who saw me use my abilities. There was your broken body, laying in the middle of the road in an ever-growing pool of your own blood. Despite everything I was capable of doing, my brand-new fiancée, the love of my life, was dead.”

Having to relive the tragedy brought hidden emotions back to the surface, making Clark distraught all over again. Lana found herself unable to stay away from him any longer and slid across the couch to be by his side and comfort him. The lightest touch from her hand acted like a balm for his soul. By the time she pulled his head onto her shoulder and began stroking his hair, he was already regaining control of himself.

“I can see why you were desperate to redo that day,” Lana said, “but why didn’t you just save me from Lex?”

“If I knew then what I know now, that’s what I would’ve done. I thought Lex would leave you alone if I didn’t tell you my secrets and then you’d be safe.

Lana wished then she could look away from Clark, because his eyes were filled with pain. “Never in my wildest nightmares did you end up dating him,” Clark said slowly. “To think that after all I gave up to see you safe, you ended up in more danger than ever…I thought I was going insane.”

Lana knew now that her dating Lex hadn’t just made Clark jealous, it had devastated him. Even though he had been the one to break up, she couldn’t help but try and apologize.

“I’m sorry, Clark. If I had only known…”

Clark pressed a hand to her lips. “Please don’t apologize for my mistakes. If I had just told you everything the second time and then saved you from Lex, none of this would have ever happened. I’m the one that should be apologizing. I’m sorry. I’m sorry I lied to you when I said I didn’t love you anymore. I’m sorry I ever got you tangled up with Lex in the first place. Finally, I’m sorry I wasn’t the boyfriend you deserved.”

“Apology accepted.”

Clark and Lana spent a long time holding on to each other. Lana had more questions, mostly innocuous ones, and Clark was more than happy to answer them. He explained the full extent of his abilities, and even described her engagement ring. When the questions were exhausted, but before the people were, Clark stood up and said, “It’s time for you to learn my first secret, my biggest secret, the secret Lex would kill to know.”

Lana replied quietly, “I’m ready, I've always been ready. Let’s go.”

Once Again

Chapter 3

At the end of the next super-speed trip, Lana was surprised when they ended up at the mouth of the Kawatche caves just outside of Smallville. When thinking of a cold-weather destination, she had been thinking of some place far to the north, not somewhere in Smallville.

After gently setting Lana down, Clark slapped himself on the forehead when he realized he had forgotten the octagonal key. “Wait here a second, Lana, I need to go get something.”

By the time she asked, “What do you need?” Clark was back in front of her, holding the gray, metallic disk.

“I saw a picture of that in one of the files on Lex’s computer,” Lana said.

“Yeah, I imagine you did. Lex found this our sophomore year in high school in the field where…well, I’d better wait to tell you that part of the story.” Tipping his head toward the cave mouth, Clark said, “Come on, your answers await.”

Walking by the many paintings and symbols on the cave walls, Lana was overcome by a long-held curiosity. “Clark? You can read these symbols, right?”

“Umm…yeah. Most of them anyway. Some of them are actually Kawatche paintings which were explained to me by Dr. Willowbrook, but most of them are from an extinct language.”

“Who spoke this language?”

Clark grinned and said, “Not anyone around here, that’s for sure.”

Shortly thereafter, Clark and Lana stepped into the small room at the back of the caves. Having been to the caves before and never having seen this room even once, Lana was confused.

“I don’t remember this place ever being here,” Lana said. “How’d you find it?”

“It was left here for me.”

Almost disbelievingly, Lana replied, “For you.”

You’d think this would be easier the second time around, Clark thought, but noooooooo! Clark held the octagonal key in the air, and said nervously, “Lana, what you’re about to learn might end up changing our relationship.”

Lana latched onto his forearm and said, “You’ve already told me so much, whatever is left will be okay, too.”

Buoyed by Lana’s support, Clark slid the key into the slot. A cascade of golden light shot up from the table as Lana looked around wonderingly.

Clark held out the hand that had held the key and asked, “Do you trust me?”

Without any hesitation, Lana curled a delicate hand around his. Clark took a short step forward and loosely wrapped his other arm around her back. Instantly, they were shot forward along a coruscating tube of blue-white energy.

Everything that happened from here on out was brand new to Lana and she was soaking with the wonderment of a child on her first trip to the zoo. The trip was over all too fast as far as she was concerned, and she found herself standing at Clark’s side in what could only be described as a towering palace made of what appeared to be ice and crystal. The cold closed in on Lana like a thick blanket, but she barely even noticed as she looked in awe at her surroundings.

“Oh my God!” she said. “What is this place?”

“It’s the Fortress of Solitude…the real fortress of solitude.”

Before Lana could ask another question, Clark summoned his last reserves of courage and gave her his final secret. “Wh…when you asked me years ago if I believed in life on other planets, you had no idea how ironic that question was.”

Lana broke off staring at her incredible surroundings to look squarely at Clark. She was confused, not sure how this fit in with his secrets.

Clark pushed on, and said, “I’m from a planet called Krypton.”

Lana had been expecting something momentous, but this was far beyond anything she had seriously considered. Clark Kent, Lana thought, the man I lo…well, I’ll think about that part later…the guy I’ve known since early childhood, is an alien?

Once the secret was out in the open, Clark told her everything, starting with his arrival in the first meteor shower and ending with the revelation that his biological father Jor-El lived on in this place through his memories and will.

After that, just like before, Clark took Lana back home to think over what she had learned. He believed she would choose to remain close to him just like she had the first time, but this time, they weren’t dating and that would make all the difference, it would keep her safe.

Over the winter, Clark and Lana repaired their friendship, slowly returning to the comfortable place in their lives they had shared during their ‘summer of love.’ Long before the winter was over, Lana felt a rekindling of the need to once again have Clark by her side as her friend, her lover…her one true love.

Clark felt the same need, but fought it constantly as he believed that Lex would leave her alone as long as they stayed apart.

Lana was becoming increasingly frustrated by Clark’s intransigence, so finally, she arranged for Chloe to disappear during a movie the three of them were attending together. When the final credits rolled and Clark realized that Chloe had taken a taxi, Lana dragged him from the theater lobby to her SUV where they had it out.

Lana stuck the key in the ignition, then turned to Clark and said, “I love you, Clark.”

Unwilling to lie to her anymore, Clark stayed silent, his face a stone mask.

“I love you, Clark. I love you, I love you, I LOVE you.” Each time, she said those three words a different way, and each time, Clark knew that she meant them. Under the force of her heartfelt barrage, he was able to maintain his silence, but the stone mask began to crumble.

Sensing weakness, Lana turned up the pressure, trying to turn a slight crumble into a total collapse. “Please, Clark, once again I feel the connection we used to have.” Using mental images that were sure to make Clark sweat, Lana said seductively, “I burn for your gentle caress, your fiery kiss, and your passionate lovemaking.”

Clark was still silent, though his eyes were wide open, his face was flushed, and his breathing was shallow as Lana leaned in for the kill and whispered, “And you know what else, Clark? I know you feel the same way too.”

“I can’t do this, Lana," Clark pleaded. "Staying away from you is the only thing keeping you safe from Lex.”

“Clark, you have to learn you can’t control everything, even with your abilities. Life is risk. I won’t let you control me just so you can feel good about yourself.”

Seeing the challenge that was plain in Lana’s intense glare, Clark thought back to the day he begged Jor-El for another chance to save Lana, another chance to make things right. Jor-El had told him, ‘There is one trial you have yet to experience. But you must heed my warning. The tide of fate is impossible to stop.’

Clark had always thought that ‘one trial’ was losing someone close to him, but now, he was looking at it in a different light. Maybe, he thought, it meant that I have to learn to let go of the idea that I’m somehow responsible if anything goes wrong, that I can somehow save everyone if only I try hard enough. ‘The tide of fate is impossible to stop.’ Wow. Life goes on, and people have to be allowed to live their lives…including me.

Clark smiled for the first time since the movie ended and said softly to Lana, “I love you too and I'm ready to try once again.”

Awesome two chapters, Card! :) Another great way for the Clana to return in Season 6. I just KNOW TPTB will never match the wonderful stories I read here in Clanaland. Wonderful story. I've always felt Clark giving Lana up made Jonathan's death invain. *sigh* I don't know that I can explain it right. Everything Clark went through... everything he did... everything he lost...and he lets her go. *sigh*

Great ending Card - very sweet!

I love the way Lana 'forced' Clark to see the truth. And to be honest, I could never believe you'd end a story in any way other than this. :)

I have to admit I thought it would be amusing to try to increase the tension level among your readers by questioning where you were going...but it proved an absolute failure, for it seemed everyone else had the same faith in your ultimate destination. :( Rats!

Although, just a suggestion mind you, you might actually want to try a little of the dark side in a future story...think of the fun...

You wanted an epilogue, so here's a short one.

Once Again

Epilogue

Clark and Lana sat in the loft of the Kent barn, enjoying the multiple hues set before them. Pinks, purples, and oranges stretched across the sky in irregular bands. The strange thing for them was they were sitting in the opposite end of the barn from Clark’s loft, in a place that used to hold nothing but hay bales.

When Clark and Lana had gotten back together, they had decided that sunsets no longer held any interest for them because they symbolized endings, and both of them had had quite enough of endings, thank you very much. So Clark spent an afternoon at the far end of the barn making a hole that was a duplicate to the one at the other end, right down to the Dutch doors, so they could begin watching sunrises.

Once the sun completed its rise, Clark and Lana began watching each other, both of them grateful that their mutual love and passion, no…hunger for each other remained undimmed by the passage of time.

As Lana’s slippered feet kicked slowly in the early morning air, Clark looked admiringly at the shapely legs poking out from the thick robe she had thrown on so she could hurry outside in time for the sunrise. As his eyes roamed the rest her, he saw that her hair was disheveled, she wore no makeup, and the bulky robe hid the contours of her remarkable body, yet she was still the most gorgeous woman he had ever seen in his life. Of course, love made him see her through rose-colored glasses, so there was little she could do that was wrong.

For her part, she enjoyed the fact that her ‘super’ boyfriend was indifferent to temperature, because he was sitting on the edge of the opening wearing nothing but linen boxers, a sight guaranteed to warm her anytime, day or night. With sharply defined muscles that could inspire a generation of would-be Michelangelos, unruly black locks, and the most amazing blue-green eyes, Lana couldn’t imagine a more beautiful man. Clark hated being called ‘beautiful,’ but handsome just didn’t seem to be a strong enough word to her, so ‘beautiful’ it is.

The sunrise had passed in silence, so when Lana said, “Good morning, Mr. Kent,” it was the first human sounds of their day.

Clark quickly replied, saying, “Good morning yourself, soon-to-be Mrs. Kent” as he moved in for a good morning kiss. Given the direction of the thoughts they had both been having, it was no surprise to either of them when a simple kiss turned into something more. Clark silently congratulated himself for placing a thick, well-padded layer of carpeting all over this end of the barn for just this type of ‘emergency.’

Clark and Lana didn’t get to watch their precious sunrises very often, only when she was in town for a weekend visit, but soon, those early morning sunrise watchings were going to be happening much more often because Lana was graduating in a month, and she had already secured a job in Smallville. Both of them found it slightly humorous that the girl who had wanted nothing more than to leave Smallville and find herself was instead coming home to stay.

From the time Lana completed her move home, she would have one month left to make final preparations for their June wedding. Nell’s help had been invaluable to this point. Clark had even suggested that Lana stay in Metropolis to finish making her plans, but she wouldn’t have it. She had been forced by circumstance to stay away from her man for long enough. She was coming home and that was that.

Lana was going to move directly to the Kent farm, because Clark thought it was stupid for her to have to find temporary living quarters for the one month before the wedding. When he had pointed that out to his mother, she had finally relented and allowed them to ‘cohabitate’ under her roof for the last month.

Clark knew his old bedroom wouldn’t be large enough for the two of them and their clothes, especially Lana’s clothes he had thought with a snort, so he had spent some time and money building an add-on to the house on the side of the house that was furthest from the road. The new bedroom was spacious and filled with sunlight in the mornings. Most of all, it had huge closets.

Finally, the big day arrived. There was Clark waiting at the altar, resplendent in a black tux with a gray vest and striped ascot. Even his hair had cooperated for once, following the commands of his comb by laying down in near-perfect order.

As Wagner’s Bridal March played, Lana made her way down the aisle with a slow, measured step, escorted by her step-uncle, Dean. She was a glowing confection of shimmering silk and lace that Clark could not keep his eyes off of.

Once their vows were exchanged and the ceremony was complete, they headed their reception which turned out to be a raucous celebration of the start of their life together. As they reached their honeymoon suite, Lana groaned about too much rich food, while Clark grumbled about too much dancing. Then, finally alone, they looked at each other and said together, “Too many clothes!”

What a hoot. I am pleasantly surprised and PLEASED you catered to your readers. I mean, this was perfect. So often the Loft has been used for sunsets, yet time and time again, they missed it. When I read that Clark made a new window for a new stage in their lives, I simply smiled and giggled. Absolutely brilliant.

I like a disheveled Lana and a relaxed and barely clothed Clark. You truly give these kids their due and what it would be like had things worked out differently on the show. You are a treasure for your Clana fans and I have been blessed to find a writer that knows, understands and paints true love.

Cool. :) LOL at the "Too much clothes" - but so true for newlyweds to think that way, and Clark & Lana will often think that way, for many years to come, in my opinion. ;) Now happily married.
