My Top 5 Albums of 2006 are as follows:
Honorable Mentions: UVERworld - "Timeless", Masami Okui - Godspeed"
5. Captain Straydum - "108DREAMS"
Why: Fun, playful lyrics bathing in a bluesy, funk rock broth.
My favorite tracks: "Metro no Merosu", "Frankfort"
4. Takahashi Hitomi - "Sympathy"
Why: Well-arranged, articulate lyrics embedded within a light rock core. She has taken the pop influences in Eric Clapton and included them in her music.
My favorite tracks: "Aozora no Namida", "16"
3. YUI - "From Me to You"
Why: Effective lyrics interwoven into robust melodies. Her music like is a jawbreaker shoved into the middle of a marshmellow.
My favorite tracks: The entire album, "TOKYO" (beautiful ballad), "LIFE" (sharp lyrics in an spirited music environment)
2. Sukima Switch - "Kuusou Clip"
Why: One part elaborate arrangements, another of brilliant lyrical and musical composition, and a hint of King Crimson. They are a very good jazz rock band.
My favorite tracks: The entire album, "Kirei Da", "Fiction", "Garana" (single)
1. Sambomaster - "Boku to Kimi no Subete wo Rock 'n Roll to Yobe"
Why: Yamaguchi Takashi is a true musical genius. I don't use the word "genius" often, as I don't like to distribute it inappropriate, but Yamaguchi really does understand musical and lyrics intricacies better than a lot (a - lot) of bands I've heard. He has written nearly all of their lyrics and music, and does an outstanding job. "Sambomaster Wa Kimi Ni Katarikakeru" was the best album of 2005, "Boku to Kimi no Subete wo Rock 'n Roll to Yobe" of 2006, and if they release an album in 2007 it'll probably be the top of my list that year.
My favorite tracks: The entire album, "BEIBII Yasashii Yoru ga Ki te" (their first really good ballad), "Futatsu No Namida" (great intro, like their other songs), "Shinon Fuukei" (the harmony remains, even as the music goes into utter chaos)
