*gasps*
I want to go!
damn... but I'm unemployed and broke, have no Smallville fans to go with and there's no chance in Hell that my parents would let me go.
I had enough trouble convincing my mum to let me go to Witchfest... which was closer to where I live, I had friends to go with and the tickets were only £10.
grrr...
I expect detailed accounts from anyone who goes to this

Suppose it could have gone there, maybe a mod will move it.
But at least he's posted here to let people know about the event. Hopefully after the holidays people will notice this more, as there is plenty time till the event.
So this thread should get busy...

I for one am going, have read on these forums and other convention organisers forums threads from people wanting Smallville guests to come to the UK.
Someone has listened and is doing something about it, so in my opinion the UK fans should show their support and if it does well, we may get some of the bigger stars of the show at a future event.
This is not a rant, just my own thoughts on the subject. As for the price, you are getting 2 autos from each guest, I've seen other conventions charge more just for entry passes.

Got an email from Wayne at rogue event. It seems there may be a disco as well, But as he said in the email, it's still quite early on, he hopes to announce more guests/plans this month.
I asked so that I could arrange flights etc.
But it's nice to see a few more people expressing an interest in this event!!

Hi,
Tickets are still available for the convention, dont forgot we offer a part payment scheme to make it easier.
As gebes has mention for which I thank him we will be having themed evening discos on the friday and saturday night.
We hope to bring you at least one main cast member, and possibly another guest star with a director/writer of the show.
The more tickets we sell the more guests we can get.
As for queing for autographs, we will use a number system based on your ticket number; which should hopefully mean you dont queue for more than 10/20 minutes.
There will also be onstage talks, a dealers room and a photostudio.
We have asked Tom and unforuntaly he will not be able to make the show this year. We will keep trying him for future shows.
Best wishes and Happy New Year to all.

I'm considering buying tickets for me and my little bro - its the weekend after his birthday.I know he'd like to go but at the same time isnt this the weekend that Superman Returns premiers in the UK? He wants to go to London for that too...so I need to pick on or the other as I am not paying for both (we are up in Dundee so its a fair bit of travelling & cost)

Lizbif: I'm coming to this from Edinburgh, so know all about the travelling, I've not yet seen any details about the Superman Premiere in London, but felt I had to support this, as If it does well, it might become a regular event.
Clark-Lana: The weekend ticket covers all 3 days as there is no option for a Sat-Sun pass only.

As for what is a convention, suppose the answer would have to be:
Where a group of people share a common interest(Smallville) and get together to discuss/chat about it. With the added bonus of having guests from the show itself, so that we may ask show related questions etc
Maybe someone else may post a better description.

As you can all understand the main cast members are very busy.
We are in talks to bring one over here and this can be helped by booking tickets as it give us a bigger budget to offer the guests higher fees, or get more guests.

Hi
Conventions are a great place to meet people and make new friends.
Basicallt you have talks throughout the day in the main hall which you can sit and watch, and also ask the guests any questions you have about their career etc.
Many people tend to socialise with each other, in the bar lounge etc.
There are many things during the day, the dealers room, photostudio you will be kept busy. Also coventry is a nice city spend time enjoying.
I would'nt worry about being shy, i was similar at my first convention and i found it very enjoyble with people welcoming.
Don't forget you can let your hair down at the eveing parties with the themes to be confirmed as:
Friday: School Disco
Saturday: Summer Ball

Bah! I'm in Kent, well Kent/London and I'm thinking about going... but I don't know...maybe I'm too old for this kind of thing - then again, spent my last summer holidays (all 4.5 months of it) doing nothing so it might be fun to do something for a change. Having read all this stuff, quite interested. It's not that far.... but I would have much preferred London. I'm probably the only one obsessed enough with this show to really go out of my friends who watch it. Still, seems like a cool event.
Why is this UK forum so dead on here?! We got a few regulars but nothing special :( Oh well.
One thing I don't do though is balls, or discos. Sounds so.... school-like.

Yup, myself included. Oh no, it might turn into the good old girls sit one side of the room, guys the other, no-one doing anything :rotfl: I would go just to see that.
And don't forget, you can use your travelcard all the way to zone 6 north london and then buy an extension from there (always the cheapest way). You'd need to buy an all zone TC - you're about zone 3/4 (I used to live in Bromley :shudders: :\ ) and then look from the last station on zone 6 north london that is on the route you get from http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/
Hope that helps.

Not gonna change much. You'll probably get advanced booking discounts but tbh, next train fare rise shouldn't be for about 8 months (unless the gvmt screw us over with the budget). It will be +- about £5 I should think. It's fun doing stuff like this -planning etc. Well it was for the concert I went to in Milton Keynes last year - though the venue was actually just a big bowl shaped field in the middle of the motorway and I almost missed the last train back to London...
And yes, the Automobile Assoc won't help too much ;) :rotfl: :rotfl:

Yeah, going back is the scary bit. So I take it Sunday only? Sunday is like the worst day for travel, making everything hard as the tube stops early (12am as opposed to about 1:10am) and some don't run + hardly anyone travels at that time. Getting lost is scary - I got lost not far from Oxford Street in my first year at Uni (first 3 days in fact) and I crapped myself walking round in circles for about 30mins still stuck in backstreets. Eventually I came out onto Oxford street and breathed a sigh of relief. I know the whole area like the back of my hand now :D and no longer give two hoots if I get lost or not, but I must admit a few years ago it was a different story.

Hi
Rogue Events are pleased to welcome our 4th Guest to Insurgence.
ERICA DURANCE - LOIS LANE
Erica was a frequent guest-star for the fourth season of the show as Lois Lane (2004-2005), and has now joined the regular cast for the fifth season (2005-2006).
We look forward to welcoming Erica to our show this June.

In previous experience of attending conventions and events it's really rare for a schedule of events to be posted prior to the event itself.
Usually though you get guest talks, photo sessions and autograph signings in the day then in the evening the parties start :D
Personally, I'm really looking forward to this - booked 6 tickets last week for me and my friends. Should be a blast!

Well, I know my parent's were glad to get rid of me for the odd weekend, when I lived at home!!
Seriously though, the event is new and needs everyone's support by attending, If it does well, then we may eventually get the guests most people I suspect want to meet, Michael, Kristin etc.
Erica's fantastic, but I would really like to meet John Glover at some point in time.

I totally agree. It's hard to get a good event going, and this show has a large fan base which should in theory make it a great event.
The more the merrier and if everyone supports it then that could lead to more!

If I go, i'm soooo wearing my Superman t-shirt :P Can i just ask, how much does it cost to get a photo done with a guest? About £20 or so? Cos thats how much it was a t the Buffy convention.

Can't say it enough, support this event and it could become a regular event. Who knows who meet decide to come over, if it does well for the organiser.
The organiser has stated more money= more guests, but he can't get more guests unless people pay to attend, so if you want the possibility of meeting some of the other members(Michael, Kristin, Allison etc) in the future, then show your support by attending!!

The bigger the event, the bigger stars. I'm pretty sure there have already been some huge conventions in the states with the main actors - us Brits don't stand much of a chance of seeing them but you never know, if the Coventry one does well...

Tom Welling hasn't been confirmed yet though - the guests going so far are;
ERICA DURANCE - Lois Lane
ERIC JOHNSON - Whitney Fordman
SARAH CARTER - Alicia Baker
MARGOT KIDDER - Dr. Crosby (Lois Lane in the Superman films)
It's a good line-up, but until Tom Welling, and/or Michael Rosenbaum are confirmed I’m not sure the cost is worth it - I’m a student so I can't really afford the price.
Unless more regular cast members are announced it's just not worth the hassle.

In order for any organiser to get the regular cast members to come, they need to build up to this.
In order to build up to this, an organiser needs your support now, so that the event does well financially, so that they may then pay whatever the cast member charges to appear.
So if you or anyone wants to see Tom/Michael etc at a convention than you need to show your support to the organiser now, so that they see that a Smallville con is financially viable, and then they can aim for a regular cast member!!

I hear what your saying, but you come off sounding like a promoter - but anyway, from what I hear there’s plenty of support from fans willing to pay the cost - but this sounds like a catch 22 to me - I could say the same thing in reverse; they could pay the cost for the cast members, in order to get more support - which would open a whole flood of other fans like me who are holding off, who will suddenly want to sign up.
It saddens me they don't have enough confidence to push the boat out more, with more advertising and get some real hype built up for anyone still unfamiliar with this convention they could attract a lot more people.

LOL, suppose I do sound a bit like that, it's just that I want the event to do well, and become regular, so that we do get the chance to meet those members we all want to meet!!
I laid my hands on a flyer for this event at Collectormania this past weekend, so know they exist, and also can say that at the SCI-FI show, David Palffy(SG1) and Annette Badland(Doctor Who) are now appearing.
Also heard that yet more guests may be announced, for both shows...

Hi, I got this in my email, Steve DeKnight is also attending so we might get spoilers for the new season :-)
Al Gough and Miles Millar, creators of hit TV series Smallville, in which James Marsters appeared as the supervillain Brainiac, will be making a rare public appearance in September.
The dynamic duo will be heading to the Queen Mary at Long Beach for James Marsters & Friends to take part in an "In Conversation With..." special.
Appearing at the event with series casting director DeeDee Bradley and writer Steven DeKnight, they will give attendees an exclusive insight into James's most recent television exploits and talk about how they breathed fresh life into the beginnings of Clark Kent and Lex Luthor.
They have also enjoyed success on the big screen with Shanghai Noon and Shanghai Knights starring Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson.
Al and Miles will be appearing at the star packed weekend event on Sunday, September 10 and are looking forward to meeting fans and talking about their future projects.
To book your Gold ticket, inclusive of all Saturday and Sunday events, go to http://www.jamesmarsters.com/QMEvent

I'm gutted, but all events/conventions do state that the guest appearance is subject to work commitments.
It's not exactly if a convention organiser can turn round and say to the film studio "you need to stop production as we had x guest appearing at our convention.
Also as has been said elsewhere, it's harder for them to arrange flights to attend a UK Con. I know that occassionally a guest has flown on an internal USA flight to attend a con for 1 day.
Far too many people are blaming the organiser (Wayne) for something that is completely outwith his control.
The guests career comes 1st, if he/she was to turn down work just to attend a con, then he/she would then not get future work.
So if you do want to be disgusted, then be disgusted with the Film studio changing things, and not the organiser, who is at the mercy of film studios doing this.

Just got back from Insurgence, the UK Smallville Convention. I'm disappointed that the Erica-lovers were speaking so negatively prior to the event; a Smallville Convention isn't about the individual guests, it's about Smallville. And I, for one, am glad I went. It was really cool to see Mitchell Kosterman (Sheriff Ethan), Sarah Jane Redmond (Aunt Nell), Alan Ritchson (Aquaman) and Margot Kidder (Lois Lane & Bridgette Crosby).
Yeah, they're not in Smallville anymore. And to be honest, I was never that bothered about Aunt Nell or Sheriff Ethan until his last episode. But getting to see the actors was a real treat and honor, and I would gladly go again.
What's that? The Erica-lovers are still saying they're glad they didn't go. Your loss. I got to meet the Lois Lane I was brought up on! Margot is such a lovely person, who made the time to talk to as many people as she could. Even getting to talk to Sarah Jane Redmond was great, she was very down-to-earth and spoke fondly of her time on Smallville. And even though he only played the part once, I still felt Smallville-geekiness when I got to hang out with Aquaman himself.
If you're reading this, Wayne, I commend you on hosting such a great event and I look forward to attending the next Smallville event "Asylum".

Hey all! I'm considering planning a Smallville Convention in May 2007 but I need to gauge interest from all fans possible to see how many people would consider going.
There would be lots of panels to learn about the making of the show and even Q&A times to talk to any producers/writers/creators/cast who attend. We'd likely have fan-ran panels and discussions on ships, music, what went wrong, what went oh-so-right, etc. There would also be a VIP luncheon likely that saturday where you can eat lunch with the professionals who come.
Since its fan-ran, the panels and activities can be catered more to fit everyone's needs and have everyone be able to participate in something.
As of now, the theme is "Metropolis" (ironically) so its not character-specific at all, as I want to generate pan-fandom interest instead of leaning towards any one or two characters.
I'm currently in "pitch" stage, which means its highly highly highly likely that this won't come to fruition if I can't get support from sponsors, but also generating discussion on it at message boards HELPS the cause, since they can see the response they'd get and desire to have one of these before the show comes to an end in the next two years.
So, my question to you all is, would you go to one of these if the price was affordable (It would be here in Los Angeles) and what would you like to see at a convention like this? Aside from cast appearances, what else might get you to be excited about this and go to it?

I would DEFINITELY be interested! I've been waiting for one of these. :)
Just the chance to meet other fans and discuss things in person would be enough for me to go. And then of course, the cast appearances. ;)
But yeah, pricing might be an issue, as I'm about to go to college and most of my family's money will be steered toward that at the time. How much were you thinking of?
Tabbymarie
08-26-2006, 10:38 PM
I'm a bit reluctant to give a price at the moment, just because its very dependant on how many sponsors we can get. I'm *hoping* the range will be on the lower side of the 70-100 dollars for the weekend, but its all very based on sponsor involvement.

Yeah, I'm surprised that they chose to have the first con in England, rather in the U.S., which has the biggest fanbase.
I live in Serbia, and i guess that most of u dont even know where that is.
I definitely do not have resources (read money) to come to LA, but i hope that u have great idea, i hope that this convention will happen.
I am sure that many people will come, with some marketing involved, not just biggest fans will come, and it could even increase popularity of the show.
So, good luck. I wish u very best, and i hope that we, who can not come to convetion, will be able to see some videos from it.

No matter where we have it, its going to be difficult for some people to travel to. With respect to location, no one specific group or person will win out, becuase there's always someone who will have to travel far.
The reason I've chosen Los Angeles is for convenience sake. Our most important resource here is TPTB and the CW, as I'm hoping we can get a lot of support from them in order to make the convention really successful. The location of the venue I'm looking into is just about 10 minutes away from the production office here, so its definintely a matter of convenience. Basically, save a traffic jam, I'm hoping that there's no reason to say "No" to support from TPTB and the CW. Hoping. heh.
I'm glad to see such strong support! I was just mentioning on another forum that if only .5 percent (a half a percent) of the members here decided to come, we'd have to get a larger convention center, the fandom is just that large. So, here's hoping we can get a LOT of interest.
So, please keep the feedback coming! While we can't start generating a TON of buzz just yet until things are approved (if they get approved) we can at least become aware of the possibilities.

Yeah, Los Angeles might be far for some fans to go to, but easier for the cast and crew of the show. And more of them may be obligated to come then.

Sounds awesome, but I probably wouldn't go because I'm not one of those fans whose obsessed with the show (although not everyone who attends these events is obsessed). I just like the show for what it is, and probably wouldn't really want to attend something like this (even though I'm an LA native). However, I do believe that thousands of Smallville fans would turn up if this idea is put into action, just from knowing the many fans of the show around me, and the many K-site members. Good luck to you. I hope you can achieve this.

They kinda tried this last year in Florida, they had Erica Durance and John Schnieder, Margo Kidder and a few others but ticket sales were so poor they had to cancel it. They didn't sell even a 100 tickets. I think the highest ticket price was about $100.
Also they film in Vancouver, Canada, so it might be more cost effective to do it someplace up there.
Michael Rosenbaum was just at BE Blow Out on Aug 20th. Just a little over a 100 people there. He actually auctioned himself off for dinner to raise money for a scholarship fund, along with the other actors in attendance.
You can find out more at www.boosterevents.com, the woman who won did a guest blog about the dinner.

It was put on by Vulkon who as been doing conventions for about 30 years. They put ads in Smallville magazine and also ask those who had tickets to promote it to the boards and still they got no response.

I don't think one can real equate UK con with US ones. I have had this dicussions with a lot of people from different fandoms wondering why UK events are more populated than US events. It's simple when you understand the math.
UK population 55 million
US population 225 million
Size wise the UK is a bit bigger than the state of Oregon in the US.
So the US fans of the show are spread out over a larger area, which makes having a convention a bit more of a challenge. Your typical convention attendee will drive at the most 8 hours to get to the event - the longer it takes to get there the less likely they will go. they could fly but that would be even more money to budget, besides tickets to US events typically range from $25 upto $1000, depending on how many attendees you expect to get and what levels are being offered.
Also unless it's comics, sci-fi, or straight out horror conventions, there is no real strong network for which to get the word out on. The internet is only effective if people are looking for stuff at the right place and right time. There is also the added disadvantage of US conventions having the Star Trek stigma to them thanks to SNL among others who have kinda put conventions into a very geek like category that most fans do not want to be classified in.
So logistics, stigma, and money are the most common issues a US event would have to overcome to be successful. So it takes a bit more to hold a con in the US.
If you wanted to do one I would say start the plan at least 2 years in advance of the event, just to build the momentum. Also if it is still on the air you want it between April and July, that is hiatus for most productions, less likely to have work commitment issues.

Thanks for your feedback, ravenu.
Personally, I hadn't heard of the Florida convention but maybe once? Possibly? And thats if I'm remembering correctly. And I'm not really sure if it was meant to be a pan-fandom event since I'm pretty sure it wasn't advertised on KSite. And I'm also pretty sure that they likely didn't have the backing by TPTB (cast is not the same, pay a cast member enough money they'll try to make it...especially the likes of John Schneider, Erica Durance, and Margot Kidder, who all sort of needed the publicity).
I agree that two years would have been a good time to start this, and if I felt we had two years, I would wait, but I don't think we necessarily do.
I've done a bit of research and projections based on a prediction on fandom and ratings increase from Superman Returns fans, and I think that this may would be the best time to have a convention here in the US.
I'm not going to have the convention outside of the US, that's out of the question. We'd have even less attendees than what you're projecting.
I've been posting this on several websites and, well we all know that there's a lot of people who get excited about this kidn of thing but then not end up going, but I'm estimating, again with projected calculations based on the number of replies vs the number of views vs the number of members per board, given a margin of error, etc yada yada, and I do think the convention could have anywhere between 300 and 500 attendees, more than 500 if we could get key cast to show up, although I'm not banking on that one.
The goal behind this, to even have it take off at all, is to have TPTB support, and then go for the CW for sponsorship. They could do a hell of a lot more advertising for this than I can on my own. I'll have the backing of ALL of the fansites who can send out newsletters about the convention, etc.
Again, that's the difference between any other conventions that didn't get off the ground and this one. This would be fully sponsored, fully supported, and very well advertised.
If I don't get the support from TPTB on it, I'm not even going to take it the step further because without their help, its quite impossible, I think, for me to get the support I would need to make all the plans and reservations without already having the money from the ticket sales.
Anyway, I'm still gathering data and getting a few quotes to put together in my big proposal that I'll send to additional sponsors. I'll come back and let you all know as soon as I hear anything.
Basically, I understand that its not a lot of time, but don't underestimate the power of the Vea! RAWR! :-P.

I'm not really into conventions. One, their everywhere but where in the state that I live in. Two, they're ridiculously overpriced. And three, they take away the magic of the show (for me at least, it's different with everybody). Please don't take this post into consideration though because really, it seems like everybody else would want to go.

I'm near the East Coast - but if I was closer, I would definitely come to the convention.
It would be nice to have a few cast members (Tom Welling and at least two others from the main cast) along with some recurring guest stars, Al and Miles, writers from both the magazine, books, and novels, plus some technical experts. It would be neat to have some kind of demonstration of creating one of Clark's visual effects.
It would be really nice if you could get a writer to hold a workshop of some sort for people interested in learning more about writing books/novels/shorts/fanfiction for Smallville or other fan related media.
The luncheon is a great idea and definitely the Q&A sessions. Plus some sort of arranged autograph/picture sessions with the cast members would be nice.
I'm sure none of this is helpful, but thought I'd throw some ideas out there.
Oh, I have two other suggestions.
Some sort of merchandise kiosk or exhibit of some sort would be nice for guests to purchase Smallville merchandise. It would nice if there was some hard to find merchandise to purchase.
Also, it would be interesting to have a unique t-shirt created and sold for the convention kind of like a concert tour t-shirt. Perhaps this could be way to get visitors to this site involved in the convention. There are some very talented artists here - perhaps another contest of some sort for a t-shirt design??

If the convention site were within reasonable driving distance (in my case, either Memphis or Nashville, TN), I'd probably go. The interest in conventions lately seem to include an all-in-one type of theme. An all inclusive Sci-fi theme for example. I have only been to a couple of sci-fi cons., so I don't know whether or not one show themes are a thing of the past due to profitibility issues or not. That's sad to realize, but I think as a Smallville fan, we have to understand the bottom line of every good intended event... making money. Sometimes strangers meet at these shows and other locations get planned out that are closer to others who can't travel as far as a Los Angeles or New York. I would support a Smallville convention, but either your idea has to accept the possibility of financial loss or figure out a way to generate further cons that generate a following.
