I have to say this video is probably one of the most intense music videos that I've ever made. There's really no way to explain it, so just check it out, and please let me know what you think.
Thanks very much

Vai,

That was one amazing video dude. You picked one of my all time favorite songs for this video. I have been wanting to make a video with Firestarter for ages but just never got around to it. I can't imagine anyone doing a better job with the song in a video than you did. You made it seem like the song was made for your video.

I personally feel this is the best video you have done to date my friend.

What personally blew me away was the pacing and timing of the video. With a song like Firestarter, it is very unevenly paced throughout. I always thought it would be a frustrating song to edit to. There are slow parts, faster parts, occasional beats to hit, etc.. You were there on all of it.

Fantastic scene selection by the way. You nailed all the best scenes in the movie.

A favorite part of mine in the video was @ 1:11 when the song goes "Firestarter" and you nailed the timing on the building blowing. That bit put a smile on my face.

My personal favorite section started @ 2:13 when the song kicked in. This is my favorite part of the song so I was really looking forward to see what you did with it. The editing and scene selection were outstanding. I also loved the intercutting with the dominoes and the other scenes. I really liked the overhead shot on NP's character in the cell and how you had her switch sides in the cell on beat. That was very cool.

This video was almost perfect dude. My only other gripe aside from a bit of mouth movement, and I mean my ONLY other gripe would have to be the very beginning of the video. It came off as choppy to me because there were long spaces of black and then the next scene would pop back on screen.

But this was seriously one of the best movie videos I have ever seen bro. One of my all time favorite songs, great scenes, and fantastic editing/pacing/timing.

9.5/10

* I have seriously watched this video at least 10 times now. I love it. From a creative standpoint, I really loved what you did with this video. You really did the movie justice. The editing, scene choices, and the song just all go so well together.

But there is something I would have done different from a creative standpoint and I wanted to get your thoughts on it.

Now as I mentioned, I loved the part @ 1:11 when you have the first building start to blow right on Firestarter. But what I feel like the video was calling for, was to have the song kick in with the piano after the second building faded to black. What I would have done is audio edit the song. I would have cut out the instrumental after the Firestarter lyric @ 1:11. Then I would have taken the instrumental bit after the second "Firestarter" @ 2:07. They are both identical. Then the song would have carried over into the harder hitting piano after the second building faded to black. Getting to see the faster scenes starting with NP getting her head shaved and hear the song kick in with the piano after seeing the buildings blow, would have sent chills down my spine. I still loved the way you made the video. I just thought I would throw that out there to get your thoughts.

But I do get that you wanted the extra time to tell the story of the movie so it is all good. :)

Wow!
Ryan you've given excellent, extensive feedback on all my vids and this one was no exception.

When I decided to pick "Firestarter" I knew how much you dug Jimmy Eat World's stuff and thought, "I wonder what vyperman7 himself will feel about this vid once it's finished". To hear that you think I did the song justice was priceless. And when you said,"You made it seem like the song was made for your video." I said "Mission Accomplished". That's what this is all about for me, making the song fit in seamlessly with the tone and mood of the movie. I remember thinking the same thing when I saw your "Numb" music video for Smallville. Thanks very much for that.

As you mentioned "Firestarter" is an incredibly unevenly paced song. It doesn't follow the formulaic Pre-chorus,verse, chorus, verse, chorus...etc path. A lot of the song is just build up that needs to be edited patiently and given as much devotion as the chorus. That's why I decided to fill the build-up with little hints as to what everyone's character is and then during the climactic parts reveal there motivations and roles in the story. I felt like I did well with the pacing of the song, so to receive such great, positive praise from you on the pace, really made me feel like I had succeeded and done just that.

I'm glad you liked the "Firestarter" cue at 1:11, it was just too easy of a cue to pass-up.:D

The section at 2:13 was the reason I decided to choose the song, such great instrumentals deserved the best shots in the movie to complement it. So scene selection was key and I'm glad that you appreciated the scenes I chose.

I can understand your gripe about the intro, I was being very experimental with it. I just wanted to highlight the subtle beats, but I can definetley see where you were coming from.

And finally the 9.5 rating.....I'm completely floored dude!!! I can't explain how rewarding it is to read that because I really put everything I could into this vid.

Thank you very much for this extremely awesome feedback that you've given Ryan, it is, as always, very much appreciated.

No problem Vai!!

Make sure you read my additional comment I added in my edit. Especially since you love the instrumental starting @ 2:13. I am really curious to see your thoughts on it.

Maybe if you are ever feeling curious, trying editing the song to get the instrumental to kick in after the second building blowing fades to black and then going right into the part of the video starting with NP getting her head shaved. I am telling you, it would be an awesome experience to see the faster section start and hear that section of the song after the buildings blowing up. Especially since the first "Firestarter" is song with much more intensity.

You know what? That's a great suggestion! I'm definitely gonna try this out ASAP, I'll post it and let you see how it turned out.

Awesome dude. I can't wait. I am seriously psyched to see it.

I love to audio edit. I haven't used a whole song in I don't know how long. But what usually sucks is that the video usually ends up being 2-3 minutes. But with Firestarter you still get almost a full 4 minutes.

Well I've tried to edit the sequence per your instruction and this is a sample of the two sequences cut one after the other. The sequence feels a bit jarring but maybe you can take a look at it and tell me how to improve it or better explain how you want me to edit it.

Hey Vai,

The best way for me to let you know how I would edit it is by showing you.

I cut an MP3 version of my Firestarter Edit. Vegas has MP3 capability so I can edit a song and then cut an MP3.

I cut the song down to 2 minutes just for fun, but I made one of my edits in the point I was talking about.

Thanks man.

Glad that you like it. I was going to do a full edit with it going out to 3:45 for you in case you wanted to use it. But I made two minutes just for fun.My computer went down on me, and I won't have access for awhile. But when I get up running, if you want me to cut a longer version just let me know.

The way I edited it is how it was cut in the S4 Crusade promos a few years ago. They went from the piano chords right into the tail end of the song. It just stuck with me.

Here's a 3:56 cut. The quality isn't up there because I didn't want the size to be too big, but if you really like it I can send you a larger file with better quality.
