Most people in my class who read it had mixed opinions. The book really is a classic and shud be considered as such when you read it. If you dislike long paragraphs, little to no action, detailed descriptions of very simple things, and chapters upon chapters of character development, this book isn't for you. I read it for the sake of learning more about the author's writing style, which is very unique, but the plot was... simply not meant for our time period. Unless you are a fan of early American literature, you'll either hate the book or find it really boring.
With that said, I didn't think it was that bad, but I'd read a hundred other books over it.

it's a classic! i love The Scarlet Letter. Hawthorne has you captivated by the story of adultery with his incredibly well developed characters. the imagery is great and the physical grotesqueness of Chillingworth is a brilliant reflection of his true self, while Dimmesdale's psychological anguish is heart breaking. such a great book. one of my favorites that was pushed on me in school :)
