As USA have qualified for the finals i was wondering if there was much interest over there in the World Cup?
I personally think they'll do quite well and should beat Ghana and the Czech Republic to go through to the next stage.

Today's game was amazing, the last ten minutes of it anyway. As soon as Rooney (s?) got in the game, England woke up or something. It was attack after attack. I'm a Russian living in the US but I've been the biggest English fan since the '98 Cup. Hope they win!
As for USA, it's a sad sad situation. I wanna see both the Chezhs and the Italians in the play-offs, but yet I'm secretly hoping for the US to win this Saturday, cuz we are quite the underdogs, and if we get even get in the playoffs at this point, it would be a tremendous achievement. Plus Pope is my hero haha. Of course the chances of us beating Italy are next to nothing.

Good to know. Next time you feel like sharing your opinion, don't. This isn't a topic to discuss whether or not your like soccer, it's here to discuss the World Cup. Considering you think soccer sucks, I assume you haven't seen a single game of this year's Cup and therefore have nothing to discuss. So, unless you have something to contribute, stop posting useless crap before someone less tolerant than I reports you.

I really like the way you guys are playing this Cup. Brazil... that's one loss and if they play the way they played last time, Australia could pull of a tie. But that's only one game. So long as you guys win another one, you have good chances of advancing.

Reggae Boyz make me so sad :(
Trinidad and Tobago put on a good show for us today. Caribbean pride and all that. I left the house during 80th minute because I was late and figured we had the draw settled. I should have known better...England! And I certainly meant that as a pejorative :p

Well, Magoo's original question was about the level of interest over here, so I'll respond that I've seen little.
One guy at work that I know of follows it, even has pairings and scores up on his board. The result is that everyone enjoys hassling him about it, but friends will do that if they know that they can get a rise out of you.
I'm following baseball and basketball.
People around here would much rather talk about upcoming Fall college American football practice than actually watch soccer right now. Not trying to put down soccer, that's just the way it is. People like what they have traditionally grown up with, and that is American football, baseball, and basketball. And there are lots of other choices too for occupying our time. A lot of kids play soccer though, maybe it's US popularity will climb as those kids get older.
I might watch championship games if the US was involved, but that's not likely I hear. :p

haha are you serious? i could give you a quick rundown on the main teams and rules if you really want me to. USA is supposed to be ranked 5th in the world (no clue who ranks teams but apperantly someone does) but the last time i saw them play (against the chezh republic) they were pretty much pathetic. i haven't seen a team play that bad until today... argentina vs. serbia/montenegro. but the US were unorganized, unmotivated, slow, and simply sad to watch. rumor has it that our coach is to blame for all of this, and the team itself is capable of way more. since we absolutely have to win to advance to the playoffs, i am hoping the players will feel at least a bit motivated and perhaps the coach did something to get them a little more organized. in my opinion, the only way we can beat italy is if they underestimate us and come out on the field unprepared (sorta like brazil did in '98 finals vs. france). that's my $0.02 regarding tomorrow's match. watch it on abc at 3pm central.
2Rosey: yeah man, i know that in the US most people don't follow soccer, and i for one am following basketball very closely (MAVS! 6 games... just you wait miami). i just don't like when certain people (not you) troll in my face. Who is your friend rooting for?

At least we managed to hold on even with nine. Since it ended in a draw I'll have to stop cursing the Italians (but not the refs) and hope they can pull out a win against the Czechs. Sorry Ghana, but I hope you lose. Nine agaist Ghana though...:(
Ketchup
06-17-2006, 03:43 PM
Not nine against Ghana. Its only nine for this game. We'll have Eddie and some random defender fill in for Pope and that other guy, but it will be 11 vs 11. Unless they changed the rules in the past year or so, that's how it's been played for decades. A red means a player misses the next game, but the coach can sub someone in.
USA really surprised me today. First half... they played like or better than Brazil! Perfect passes, coordinated attacks, ENDLESS attacks. They were totally in control. That one mistake with the free kick cross... so silly, if that didn't happen, it'd be USA advancing right now (well if Ghana lost or tied). Don't even get me started on the refs. I'd kill that guy myself if I had the chance. Bullsh*t, you don't give red cards for late tackles, and definitely not if the player makes contact with the ball. That off-side was an amazing call though, almost wish that sideline ref wasn't that good, it'd be 2-1.
Oh well, its 1 point for USA, 4 for Italy, 3 for Chezh, 3 for Ghana. If we beat Ghana (which, if we play like we did today, shouldnt be hard) and Italy beats the Chezhs, we'll advance. What abeautiful game of soccer. Ahem, I meant football :)

For Pope, yes, he's been a jerk the entire game, but that's Pope for you  . Mastroeni however pulled a late tackle and made contact with the ball. That's a free kick in most cases... or a yellow card is the ref is jumpy. But a red? That was just bullsh*t. And the italian guy got the card just he drew blood, which is an actual entry in the FIFA Rules Of The Game for 06 so no arguements there. Stupid ref...

USA got referee-raped... that's a termn my friend used to describe today's game. How was that a PK?! He didn't even touch the guy! And that's a yellow card for a dive to the Ghanian player... so it should have been a free kick against Ghana, not a PK against the US. Bullsh*t. Oh well, at least the Bazil-Japan match was fun to watch... a massacre! haha. I loved all the pointless passing around. What like 30 consecutive passes without loss of possession? As the guy in that beer commercial would say... BRILLIANT!

italy is not palying well, it's just luck did you see what kind of teams they played against:
not offence but
USA has not the team to play against a 3 times world cup champion and even thought they end 1-1 Italy could not win this match. Reason 1 why germany is going to win
Gahna: well nuff' say they are new
Czech: theoretically the team which Italy would heve more difficult to win but they did I can't argue with that
Australia: That penal was bullsh"#t they fake it and they had the guts to go and congratulated the palyer who felt. It was like "good job man you fake it and now we have a penal" Australia deserved to win. Reason 2 why Germany is going to win
Ucrany: well if Italy wouldn't win this match I bet the Italians themself will kill their team.I mean look what kind of team was Ucrany, the minute that spain win 4-0 that minute I said Ucrany sucks. Of course Italy would win.
but now Italy will play against a real team GERMANY.
Geramany is going to win cause:
1. they are locals they are not going lose in their own country, thae german culture doesn't allow that. Just look Germany 74 they wnnt they play they won
2. They know how to play against "big" teams and they win e.g. Argentina.
GERMANY WILL WIN

Del Piero's goal was truly beautiful but it doesnt take away the bitter taste this has. Italy's qualifying is just tainted as far as me goes, with the fake penalty...what can I say....*shrugs* I know its not very nice of me but I am glad that Germany is out. One trick pony as in all he does is a few step overs and passes the ball.
Rooney stepped on Cavalho's nuts not Ronaldo's. And for the record i do controversially believe it was on purpose.

The English fan in me says: "LIES! How dare you doubt the potential of England! They are the best, you're in denial, and need to be converted, by force if necessary, to the England-worshipping cult. GO ENGLAND! God save the Queen, etc, etc."
However the semi-logical human being that's still in there somewhere partially agrees with you. England doesn't score much, and could play much better, but you gotta agree, when they have it down and play to their full potential, they are practically unbeatable... if only this happened more often. They goals, as few as there are, are always the best in the World Cups. I guess that falls under "show" but also under skill.

Hey, I'm from Germany and we are the "World-champions of the heart", well at least in Germany. I'm glad we won the 3rd place, even though I wished we had played the finals. But I have to admit, Italy was better in the semi finals. I'm just glad our team got so far. Two years ago nobody believed in our team anymore. What our trainer Jürgen Klinsmann had achieved was outstanding. I would better not imagine what would have happened if we won the World Cup because millions of Germans are celebrating as if we did :)
Anyway, I loved the World Cup. I live in one of our World Cup Cities, in Hamburg, and I loved the atmosphere with all the people from all over the world :). In Hamburg resided the USA team and they were warmely welcomed. Too bad that the had such a difficult round and had to go that early. We from Hamburg stood behind them.
For the tomorrow's finals I hope that France will win as it would be an awesome end of Zidane's (sp?) carreer. If I remember correctly he said that he'll quit playing soccer after the World Cup 2006.

magoo
07-09-2006, 03:06 PM
 well you can't say they're undeserving. They deserved to be in the final and won fairly and squarly on the night.
And what has been said on this thread about the English being over rated is partly true. Some of them are not as good, as big or as world class as they like to make out. But what truely let us down as I always knew it would was the management.
Ketchup
07-09-2006, 03:30 PM
C'mon, they tied the US?! And all the important games against major teams they barely got thru. And today's game? Don't even get me started... France played better, so much better than Italy, at least starting with the second half. They only won because Zidane was out and wasn't there for the PKs.
Manuela
07-10-2006, 11:22 AM
Well...I'm sorry...maybe I'm partial but I can't agree with you...not totally!!! Yes...we played better at the beginning then we played worse...But about zidane...I appreciated him so much...He played also in an italian team, the one I cheer for...but yesterday night...even though the italian player offended him, he shouldn't have reacted in that way!!! Ok...it was the last match of the World Cup...everyone can be nervous...
But anyway...I don't want to discuss!!! I'm too happy for my team!!!!
The_Duchess

Italy won...we all know that by now...but why did that happen?
Without wanting to underestimate the italian accomplishment, their victory does not rely solely on their efforts but on what the other teams did...
Italiy won because Trezeguet missed his goal.
Italy won because Zidane was expelled.
Italy won because they were awarded the chance to win a game at the last minute over a foul that DID NOT exist.
Italy won because regardless of what people say, the jersey's weigh and its not the same to wear a Brasilian or Italian jersey than to sport a Taiwan one. Tradition weighs in heavily.
Italy won because they were lucky.
And even though I believe that they have one of the best teams in the world, I dont think they should have been awarded the World Cup; there were far better teams.
Call it France, Brazil or Argentina...Italy did not deserve to win.
Their victory doesnt lie on accomplishments, it lies on deception and a penalty shot that should have never been.
Over and out.
WathorigHH
07-10-2006, 02:04 PM
I completely agree. I still am angry about the game Italy vs. Australia (the "Socceroos" how they were called). I hoped so much for an Australian victory. Italy had not deserved to win that game. Their players are good actors, I thought sometimes. My hubby even called it ironically "the team with twelve players" - eleven in blue shirts and one in a black/yellow shirt.
Anyway, you can't change it anymore. Finally, we should be happy with Italy. Sometimes you just need to be lucky, don't you? ;) In 2 years there's the next European Cup and in 2010 our teams have a new chance to win the World Cup.
Call it France, Brazil or Argentina...
You forgot Germany ;) J/K we're proud of the third place. Well the Cup would have been the icing on the cake, but we're really proud.

You know...that's why here in Italy we're so happy our team won! Because none believed we could make it, even the players after what actually happened before the world cup began! I in no way address the fact that nobody believed in Italy. I believed in the team. I thought it was strong, probably not as other teams, but strong nonetheless.
But the point here is not about whether you believed in your team or not. It has nothing to do with support or heroism.
What I am not happy or proud about is the fact that the win was based on a lie, a penalty that never was (which allowed the team to move on to the next round). It would really ashame me to celebrate a win that was never deserved (based on the qualifying circumstances, not in the effort of the team).
Having said that, and without wanting to quarrel, (let me remind you we are here to post and not fight as long as we are respectful to each other) its a shame that this is such a controversial victory and that the whole affair (involving all the countries) was just so insanely cheap. Diving and pretending is not the true nature of the game. Fair play and honor is.
I love Italy but right now I would feel ashamed to celebrate because the win was based on a cheap trick that is not proper for such an honorable country.
Congrats for you :)

I'm not quite sure that France would have won if they didn't expell Zidane. They had all the 90 mins to win the match but they didn't (did anyone see Buffon's spectacular catch? ) and the Zidane incident happened in the last 15 mins, almost in the middle of it. I don't think that France could have made a last minute goal because the italians were more than willing to go to penalties. :)

Well of course Zidane's behavior was unacceptable, even if it was provoked. He shouldn't have given in because he only lowered himself to Materazzi's level and ended up harming the team's morals. If he were in his twenties, it would have been kinda forgivable, but you don't expect that from a veteran.

Football is much less aggressive today than it has ever been. Because players are 'worth' millions of pounds they are very much protected by the standards of refereeing. If you watch a game from say the early 80's and before, particularly the 70's you'll find that there are regularly tackles flying in that would easily result in a booking or a sending off today.

Football seems to be less agressive and more polluted in escence. In the 1940's and 50's they were as aggressive as they could be but there was a code of conduct, morale was respected.
