OPENING
The scene takes place at the Smallville cemetery. There is no sound with the images that are seen. There is just a single trumpet playing Taps.
It is the funeral of Senator Matthew Kane. We see Martha Kent sitting with Kane’s widow. She is the same age as Martha - A one time beautiful woman who has aged gracefully. Standing behind her are two full grown sons. One is in a military uniform; the other is in a dark suit.
Although there is a crowd of people surrounding the casket, the SV characters are split into two groups. On one side we see Clark, Chloe, Jimmy and Lois standing together. On the other side we see Lana standing with Lex and Lionel Luthor.
The view then switches to the military honor guard firing a ceremonial rifle salute into the air.
The view switches to an Army officer folding the American flag in the traditional manner and handing it to Kane’s widow and saying a few words of comfort.
As Taps concludes we see the seated Mrs. Kane trying to control her tears as her sons try to comfort her.
A man then walks to the head of the casket and begins to speak to the crowd. The man is Mark Kane – Matthew Kane’s younger brother. He is in his late forties. His hair is graying. He is trim and dressed smartly in a dark suit.
Kane: “My name is Mark Kane. Matt was my older brother. I’d like to thank all of you for coming here today. A person with a record as distinguished as Matt’s is usually laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery. Matt didn’t want that. He wanted to come back to the place where he learned to be the man we all knew him to be. He wanted to come home to Smallville.
When we were kids Matt and Jonathan Kent always let me tag along with them. During the summer from dawn to dusk the three of us would be together. No matter what kind of mischief we got ourselves into, I always knew that when the sun came down, Matt and Jonathan would make sure that I came home safe and sound.”
Both Martha and Kane’s widow smile at Mark’s recollection.
Kane: “After high school Matt went to West Point. Jonathan stayed home on his farm. But each served us in his own way. Matt defended us by serving abroad. Jonathan made us stronger from within. Both Matt and Jonathan knew that the strength of a nation is not measured by its guns or its planes but by the values of its families - families from cities as cosmopolitan as Metropolis to small towns as inconspicuous as Smallville. And now Jonathan and Matt are gone and I find myself asking who will take their place? Who will now keep us safe and sound?”
With the last sentence the camera focuses on Clark.
Kane is trying to keep his voice from breaking.
Kane: “But I know that somewhere out there is a young man or a young woman who are ready to take the place of Jonathan and Matt.”
The camera does a split shot of both Lana and Clark reacting to words they are about to hear. Both have a single tear falling from their eye.
Kane: “Perhaps they are just waiting for the right moment. A moment that will prompt them tol make themselves known to us. We’ll be waiting. We’ll be waiting for you to step forward. To step forward and take your rightful place.”
Fade to black.

OPENING CREDITS
Act 1: Scene 1
The scene is still at the Smallville cemetery. The ceremony is over and the crowd is now leaving. Clark and his group of Chloe, Lois and Jimmy are giving their condolences to Mrs. Kane and her sons. Lex, Lionel and Lana are getting ready to leave in Lex’s limousine. As the chauffer opens the car door for Lana she turns around and looks back at Clark. Clark, in his group, turns around and looks back at Lana. For a moment their eyes lock. All they see is each other.
Lex sees that Clark is looking back at Lana. He does not notice that Lana is looking at Clark. A small smile comes on Lex’s face. He believes that Clark is looking at Lana and is envying Lex.
Lionel sees the look between Clark and Lana. Because Lionel is by nature a suspicious person, he immediately recognizes that something unusual is going on between Clark and Lana.
Jimmy also notices the look between Clark and Lana. He looks back and forth between the two. He notices how their eyes are locked on each other. As the scene ends, Jimmy has a questioning expression on his face. He is not quite sure of what is going on.
**********
Act 1: Scene 2
The scene takes place at the Kent farm. Clark, Martha, Chloe, Jimmy and Lois are arriving after the funeral. The group is standing around in the kitchen.
Martha: “First Jonathan, now Matt. I just can’t believe that both of them are gone.”
The entire group is filled with depression. Chloe tries to change the subject.
Chloe: “I imagine that the senate committee will postpone its vote on the Luthor proposal.”
Martha: “On the contrary, the vote is being held tomorrow morning.”
Chloe: “You’re kidding me. Why so quickly?”
Martha: “Because Lex Luthor convinced the committee that it was of the utmost importance that the vote not be delayed.”
Clark: “How does the vote look?”
Martha looks at Lois for an answer.
Lois” “Right now, it looks like 10 senators will vote for Luthor’s proposal and only your mom will vote against it. If Senator Kane had lived he might have persuaded the majority to vote against the proposal.”
Jimmy: “I don’t get it. What happened between the morning and the afternoon sessions that swayed everyone?”
Martha has not formally met Jimmy and she looks at him not understanding his point.
Chloe: “I’m sorry I should have introduced you. Senator Kent, this is Jimmy Olsen. Jimmy works at the Daily Planet. He’s helping me out with the Luthor proposal and in covering the hearings.”
Martha who is always genuinely happy to meet friends of Chloe and Clark shakes Jimmy’s hand.
Martha: ‘Jimmy, what exactly are you trying to say?”
Jimmy: “I’ve been watching the video of the hearings. In the morning session Luthor is totally unconvincing in getting across his proposal. His proposal is all high level talk without any substance and everyone knows it. The committee takes a two hour break for lunch and Luthor visits each senator individually. In the afternoon, ten of the senators who were against the proposal in the morning are singing the praises of Lex Luthor. The only senator who didn’t sing is now dead. And Luthor never visited Senator Kent.”
Martha: “Why didn’t he visit me?”
Lois: “He wants you to vote against it. By being the only member of a bipartisan committee to vote against his proposal you look like an obstructionist who is compromising our security. He’s making you look bad.”
Chloe: “What did he do to change their minds?”
Clark: “There’s a bigger question to answer.”
Everyone gives full attention to Clark
Clark: “What is Lex’s real plan?”

Act 1: Scene 3
The scene takes place in Lana’s dormitory room. It has just turned from twilight to night. The first thing we see is the candle burning in the window. Lana is excitedly rushing to get her things. She blows out the candle and heads out the door.
She is leaving through the door in the front of the building. She is not running so as not to attract attention but she is walking very quickly. She is just about to turn the corner of the building when a sports cars pulls up. She is in too much of a hurry to notice it. It is Lex. As Lex leaves his car he sees Lana go around the corner of the building and out of his sight. He walks at a fast pace to see where Lana is headed. He turns the corner of the building and sees – nothing. No one is there. He looks around wondering where Lana could have disappeared. He looks up and at the horizon where there is still a faint light of sunset he sees a shadow flying away. He strains his eyes to get a better look but the shadow has quickly disappeared over the horizon. Lex is not sure of what he has just seen.

Act 1: Scene 4
The scene takes place at the Grand Canyon. Clark and Lana are sitting together watching the sunset over the Canyon. She is sitting in front of him and he has his arms around her. They are totally into the moment.
Lana: “There’s another secret that you never told me about.”
Clark: “What’s that?”
Lana turns her head back to look into Clark’s eyes.
Lana: “You never told me that you’re this incredibly romantic person. Last week you take me to a Tahitian island. Tonight we’re watching the sunset in the Grand Canyon. How long have you been thinking of things like this?”
Clark is somewhat embarrassed.
Clark: “It’s not really me. It’s you. When I’m with you I feel like I should make each and every moment special.”
Lana: “You don’t have to do anything special. Not for me. For me you just have to be Clark Kent.”
Lana melts into Clark and pulls him towards her.
Lana: “I love you, Clark’
Their kiss starts out lightly, their lips barely touching but soon each succumbs to the desire of the other.
The sun has set and it is now night.
Lana: “I think we need some light.”
Clark pulls out a fireplace log from his backpack and throws it in front of them.
Clark: “I came prepared.”
He sets the log ablaze with his heat vision.
Lana is enjoying the warmth but she soon becomes serious.
Lana: “Clark, what do you think Lex is up to?”
Clark: “I don’t know. No one does. But there must be more than what he’s showing the public. He must have some sort of plan.”
Lana now has a determined expression on her face.
Lana: “I’m going to find out what it is.”
Clark is now upset.
Clark: “No Lana! I don’t want you near him if you can help it.”
Lana: “Clark, I have to do this. I’m the only one who can.”
Clark: “Lana, you won’t be safe.”
Lana looks Clark in the eyes.
Lana: “Clark, since Zod came to earth none of us are safe.”
Clark knows she is right. They hold each other tightly. Almost afraid to let go. Worry is showing in the eyes of each.
End of Act 1

Act 2: Scene 1
The scene takes place at the Luthor mansion. A man is waiting for Lex. His name is Paul Rodriquez. Rodriquez is an ex-FBI agent whose specialty is surveillance. He is in his early fifties, tall and slightly overweight. Lex enters the room.
Lex: “Mr. Rodriquez, thank you for coming so quickly.”
Rodriquez: “What can I do for you, Mr. Luthor?”
Lex: “They tell me that you’re best at what you do.”
Rodriquez: “If you want to find something out about someone I’ll do it. I get results but I’m not cheap.”
Lex: “Money is not a concern. I’d like to know about the movements of these two people.”
Lex gives him photographs of Clark and Lana. Rodriquez examines the photographs. He smiles and nods his head when he sees Lana.
Lex: “Their names are Clark Kent and Lana Lang. He lives here on a farm in Smallville. She’s a student at Metropolis University.”
Rodriquez: “Are these friends of yours?”
Lex: “Clark – no. Lana – that’s what I’m trying to find out.”
Rodriquez: “Oh. So it’s that type of surveillance.”
Lex takes a deep breath. The expression of his face gives away a hint of being upset at what Rodriquez has implied. But he says nothing.
Rodriquez: “When do you want me to start?”
Lex: “Immediately.

Act 2: Scene 2
The scene takes place in Lana’s dormitory room. She is dressed in an evening gown. While she is waiting she is putting laundry in a basket that is on her bed. Chloe and Jimmy enter the room.
Chloe: “Dressed up to do your laundry?”
Lana: “Chloe, hi! I’m waiting for Lex. I’m just trying to figure out when I’m going to get a chance to take care of this.”
Chloe: “Yeah. You have been out a lot. I’m doing some laundry tonight. I’ll do it for you.”
Chloe is now aware that Jimmy is standing beside her and she should have introduced him.
Chloe: “Lana – Jimmy Olsen. Jimmy – Lana Lang.”
They shake hands and say “hi” to each other. At that moment Lex Luthor enters the room. He is dressed in a black tuxedo.
Lex: “Hello.”
He sees how Lana is dressed.
Lex: “My goodness. You look especially alluring tonight. I’m glad you called me.”
Once again, Chloe introduces Jimmy. There is now an uncomfortable silence which Lana breaks.
Lana: “Well, I guess its time to go.”
She takes her hand bag and gives Lex her wrap to place around her shoulders. As they’re walking out the door Lex turns to Chloe.
Lex: “Chloe, it’s nice to see you with someone not named Clark.”
Lex puts a satisfied smile on his face and leaves knowing that he was once again able to throw a dig at Chloe.
Chloe is taken aback by the comment and doesn’t know what to say to Jimmy. Jimmy faces her and places his hands on her arms in a reassuring manner.
Jimmy: “Hey. It’s okay. He was probably ….”
Chloe: “Using his own personal method of ‘How to Win Friends and Influence People’.”
Jimmy: “Exactly what I was thinking. It doesn’t work very well for him. Does it?”
They smile at one another indicating that they are getting very comfortable with each other.

Act 2: Scene 3
The scene takes place at the Luthor mansion. Lana and Lex are entering the study after their dinner date. Waiting for them by the fire is Lionel Luthor. Lex is very surprised to see his father.
Lex: “Dad!”
Lionel: “I need to talk to you, Lex.”
As Lionel finishes speaking, Lex’s cell phone rings. Lex looks at the incoming number.
Lex: “I have to take this. Will you excuse me?”
Not waiting for an answer Lex walks to his desk leaving Lionel and Lana alone by the fireplace. Lionel begins to speak in a whispering tone to Lana.
Lionel: “Subterfuge does not suit you, Ms. Lang.”
Lana does not understand what Lionel means.
Lana: “Mr. Luthor?”
Lionel: “Ms. Lang you may be very smart. But Lex is very smart and also very cunning. He has years of experience at playing a game in which you are totally out of your league. Quite frankly, I’m surprised Clark let you come here.”
Lana: “Clark? What does Clark have to do with anything?”
Lionel: “Please Ms. Lang. I have eyes.”
Lana does not try to answer back.
Lionel: “If you are going to play by Lex’s rules you will lose. Period. Maybe you’ll lose your life. Certainly your soul.”
Lex has finished his call and is walking back to the fireplace. Lionel has time to say one last thing.
Lionel: “Whatever it is you’re going to do, do it quickly.”
Lex: “Just what have you two been talking about?”
Lionel: “I was commenting on the eulogy from Mark Kane at his brother’s funeral. I thought it was somewhat inspirational. Didn’t you, Lex?”
Lex: “I really haven’t given it much thought. I’ve been too preoccupied thinking about Lana tonight.”
Lana smiles but shyly turns away.
Lionel: ‘Walk me to my car. I need to talk to you about something.”
Lex is hesitant. Lana reassures him.
Lana: “Go ahead, Lex. Talk to your father. I’ll wait here.”
Lex has a bothered look on his place but he starts to walk with his father. As they leave the door of the room, Lex goes out first followed by his father. Just as his father leaves the room he turns around and glances at Lana. As soon as they leave Lana walks to Lex’s desk, sits down and opens up his laptop computer

Act 2: Scene 4
The scene takes place in the laundry room of the dormitory. Chloe and Jimmy are standing side by side at a table separating the baskets of laundry.
Jimmy: “So let me get this straight. Clark has always been in love with Lana and Lana is in love with Clark but for some reason they can’t get together. In fact, she doesn’t want to be with him at all.”
Chloe: “That about sums it up.”
Jimmy: “And that reason is…”
Chloe hesitates before answering.
Chloe: “It’s complicated.”
Jimmy: “It’s complicated. That’s like the standard Smallville answer around here. Let me ask you this. Where does Chloe Sullivan fit into all of this?”
Chloe faces Jimmy.
Chloe: “Look, Jimmy. I’m not going to deny that I’ve had feelings for Clark. It’s no secret. But if you’re asking me what would I do if Clark Kent suddenly realized that he couldn’t live without me and asked me to fly away with him?”
Chloe catches herself.
Chloe: “To go away with him? The answer is…I don’t know.”
There is now an uncomfortable silence between them. Jimmy’s head is turned away from Chloe.
Chloe: “Does that make me a terrible person?”
Jimmy turns to her.
Jimmy: “No. Just an honest one.”
They begin sorting the laundry again.
Jimmy: “Anyway, if I had a choice of going on an expensive dinner date with Lex Luthor or doing the laundry. I’d definitely do the laundry.”
Chloe laughs at his remark.
Jimmy: “Especially, if I was doing it with you.”
Chloe is struck by the sincerity of Jimmy.
They continue separating the laundry and Jimmy pulls out a beach towel.
Chloe: “That belongs to Lana.”
As they pull the towel out and it unfolds, sand falls from it which both Chloe and Jimmy notice. They both look at each other.
Jimmy: “Where in Kansas is there a beach?”
Chloe looks at Jimmy not knowing how to answer.

Act 2: Scene 5
The scene takes place in the Luthor mansion. Lana is sitting at Lex’s desk searching through the files on his computer. The view is on the screen of the computer. Lana goes to a menu displaying THE MOST RECENTLY USED FILES. There are about a dozen files, most with labels of “Expense”, “Revenue” and “Income”. However, she comes across a large file labeled “Phantom”. She tries to open it but it is password protected. She doesn’t have time to try and figure out the password. Instead she opens up the computer’s email function. She types in her own email address in the “TO:” slot. She attaches the “Phantom” file to the message and hits the SEND key. The attached file is large and we see that the message is in the OUTBOX waiting to be sent.
Meanwhile we see that Lex has left his father he is walking back to the room. Just as he enters the room Lana’s message is sent and she closes the laptop. As he comes in he sees that Lana is sitting at his desk.
Lex: “Lana, what are you doing?”
Lana smiles at him.
Lana: “I’m just imagining what it is like to sit where Lex Luthor sits and see the world as he sees it.”
Lex: “And what do you see?”
Lana: “A tremendous amount of responsibility and work.”
As she says this she is out of the seat and walking towards Lex. He gently takes hold of her arm and she turns to him.
Lex: “All work and no play makes Lex a dull boy.”
As he says this he lowers his head to hers and gently kisses her on the lips. She lets him kiss her but she doesn’t respond to his satisfaction.
Lana: “I should be going.”
Lex: “What is it, Lana?”
Lana: “I have an early day tomorrow that’s all.”
Lex is now increasing the strength of his grip on her arm. He has intensely focused his eyes on hers.
Lex: “’What is it, Lana? What is it that you fear?”
Lana begins to become anxious. She starts to tremble as Lex is looking into her eyes. Her anxiety becomes evident and she leans into Lex.
Lana: “Please, I don’t want to end up alone. Please.”
Lex gently brushes the back of his hand on her face and then holds her like a parent comforting a child.
Lex: “It’s okay. It’s alright, Lana. You’re not alone. I’m here for you. I’ll never leave you alone.”
Lana closes her eyes as her anxiety is relieved. Lex calls in one of his assistants.
Lex: “Ms. Lang has had a long day. Have her driven back to Metropolis.”
Lana looks at him with pleading eyes.
Lex: “It’s alright. I’ll talk to you tomorrow.”
Lana gives him a weak smile and the assistant leads her from the room.
Lex then goes to his desk and opens up his laptop. He opens the email function and opens up the SENT box. In it he sees the email Lana sent to herself.

Assistant: “Paul, she’s just arrived at the building. Anything happening by you?”
The scene shifts to Rodriquez who is in a similar van on the highway near the Kent farm.
Rodriquez: “Nothing here. This guy practically lives in his barn. He’s been there all night.”
The assistant focuses a sound sensor on Lana’s room.

Act 3: Scene 2
The scene takes place in Lana’s dorm room. She is still filled with anxiety and she doesn’t exactly know what has happened to her. She takes her cell phone and dials.

Assistant: “She didn’t wait long. She’s on the move.”
Rodriquez, who also has a sound senor focused on the Kent barn, responds.
Rodriquez: “She must have called Kent. He was on his phone and said something about ‘the usual place’. Get out and follow her.”
Assistant: “On my way.”
The assistant gets out of his van and walks quickly to the side of the building.
**********
Act 3: Scene 4
The scene is on the side of the dormitory. Clark is embracing Lana.
Clark: “Lana, what’s wrong? Why did you call me?”
Lana: “I don’t know. I’m terrified. Please, take me somewhere. Anywhere. I don’t want to be alone.”
Clark quickly picks up Lana and launches himself off of the ground like a guided missile.
Rodriquez’s assistant comes to the side of the building. He sees nothing. He is dumbfounded as to where Lana is. He goes back to the van and radios in.
Assistant: “Paul, she’s gone.”
Rodriquez: “You lost her?”
Assistant: “No. I didn’t lose her. She just disappeared.”
Rodriquez is about to respond when he hears something on his sound sensor. He radios back.
Rodriquez: “I don’t know how it happened but Kent isn’t alone. It sounds like he’s with Lang.”
Assistant: “Are you sure it’s her?”
Rodriquez: “Yeah, it’s her. I’d know that voice anywhere.”
Assistant: “How could that happen so fast?”
Rodriquez: “I have no idea.”
**********
Act 3: Scene 5
The scene is in Clark’s loft. It is dark. There are two people on the sofa. We cannot see them clearly but we can see their silhouettes. The view is now on the rear of the sofa. There is no one in the picture. Then Clark’s head and shoulders moves up into the picture. He is dimly lit by the reflection of moonlight through the window of the loft. He has an intense look in his eyes and he is breathing heavily. He is shirtless.
Clark: “I love you.”
We cannot see Lana but we can hear her voice.
Lana: “Shhh.”
We then see two hands come up and hold the back of Clark’s head. The fingers run through his hair. Then his head is then pulled down out of sight.

Act 4: Scene 1
The scene is in the Luthor mansion. Rodriquez and his assistant are standing in front of Lex’s desk. Lex is seated and is listening into headphones. He does not look happy. He puts the headphones down.
Lex: “What about photographs?”
Rodriquez: “It was too dark for photographs and our thermal imaging equipment malfunctioned.”
Lex nods his head in understanding.
Lex: “You’ve done enough. Thank you. You can pick up your payment from my secretary on the way out.”
Both men turn to leave the room. The assistant begins to talk to Rodriquez as they are leaving.
Assistant: “What do you mean the thermal imaging equipment malfunctioned?”
Rodriquez: “It was strange. I was only picking up a heat image from her; I didn’t get anything from him. Yet I could hear two people in that barn.”
Assistant: “Exactly what did you hear?”
Rodriquez: “Let me put it this way. If I were Luthor and that was my girlfriend I’d have a serious self esteem problem. I’ve been in this business for 20 years and I’ve never heard a woman sound like that before.”

Act 4: Scene 2
The scene is in Lana’s dorm room. She is working on her computer. She is trying to break the password on the file and she is not successful. She is becoming frustrated. There is a knock on her door but before she can get up to answer it the door opens and Lex walks in.
Lana: “Lex. I wasn’t expecting you.”
Lex: “Obviously.”
Lana is standing between Lex and the computer. She can’t conceal her nervousness. Lex is aware of her tension.
Lex: “I knew it was inevitable that the inevitable would happen. I just didn’t think it would happen so quickly.”
Lana now knows that Lex knows about her and Clark. She hastens to her computer and punches a few keys before Lex can get to her. He grabs her arm and pulls her away. As he’s pulling her away, Lana has a determined look on her face and is trying to pull away but Lex is too strong for her. She tries to break his hold and punch Lex with her free hand but he is too quick for her and he now has her turned around and has his arms clasped around her. She is struggling. He is speaking is a very soothing voice.
Lex: “It’s alright. It’s okay. You’re not alone. You’re not alone, Lana.”
Lana begins to feel anxiety again as she did at the mansion. She relaxes her struggle. Lex releases her and she turns around to him and buries her head in his chest.
Lex: “I’m with you, Lana. I’ll always be with you.”

Clark: “Mr. Luthor or Jor-El?”
Lionel: “I didn’t think you and Ms. Lang were that stupid.”
Clark: “Mr. Luthor, what can I do for you?”
Lionel: “Your little escapade with Ms. Lang has put her in grave danger.”
Clark: “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Lionel places his hands on Clark’s shoulders as a father would do to a son.
Lionel: “Clark, it’s obvious to anyone who takes the time to look that you and Lana have a connection that can’t be broken. But trying to hide it in order to spy on Lex is just plain stupid.”
Clark knows it’s useless to cover up.
Clark: “How do know about that?”
Lionel: “Why else would Lana be with Lex? Clark, he’s more dangerous than he’s ever been. There’s something about him since Zod possessed him. He may not have the physical abilities anymore but he has something else. I can’t put my finger on it. You’ve got to find Lana and get her away from him.”
**********
Act 4: Scene 4
The scene is in Lana’s dorm room. She is now holding Lex like a child being cuddled by a parent. She has a comforted look on her face. Lex is still speaking in a very calm and controlled voice.
Lex: “Lana, the file you sent to yourself – what did you do with it?”
Lana, in a completely cooperative manner answers.
Lana: ‘I was trying to break the password.”
Lex: “Delete the file.”
She walks to her computer and hits the DELETE key. She then walks back to Lex and lets him hold her.
Lex: “Good. Now I have just one more thing I want you to do.”
She looks up at him. He takes a lead container out from inside his coat. He opens it up and inside is a bar of kryptonite.
Lex: “Do this one thing and you will never be alone again.”

Martha: “Last night Senator Kane suffered a heart attack. I’m sorry to tell you that Senator Kane…is dead.”

Lana: “Clark! Please I need to see you. I know I shouldn’t have called. Yes! In the usual place. I’m leaving now.

Act 3: Scene 3
The scene is outside of the dormitory. Lana leaves the dormitory and runs to the side of the building. Rodriquez’s assistant radios in.
