Opening
The opening shot is of the Earth taken from outer space. The camera begins to zoom closer to the planet. As we get closer we see the outline of North America and then focusing on the Midwest until we reach an aerial view of the ground.
It is night. There is a car speeding along a back woods’ road. The lights of the car are piercing the darkness. As the camera gets closer we see that the car is a brand new sports car.
The car stops. The camera is overhead. As it begins to rise we see that the car is in a field and the head lights are illuminating the Mark of Zod. A figure gets out of the car. We instantly recognize him as Lex Luthor. He walks into the middle of the mark that has been engraved into the field.
The camera is now level with Lex. He is in the field where he was abducted by the spaceship. He is wearing his standard black overcoat with a lavender open collared shirt. He is walking in the field thinking to himself.
He stops and stands in one spot. He then sprints as fast as he can, trying to achieve his previous super-speed but he is unable to do so. He stops. He is breathing heavily from the exertion. He is clearly frustrated and angry that he cannot restore the powers he previously had.
Lex: “Damn it!”
There is a close-up of Luthor’s face. He is thinking.
(Flashback)

Lex super-speeds back behind Clark.
Lex: “I always knew there was something different about you, Clark.”
Scene from “Mercy” - the meeting between Lionel and Lex.

OPENING CREDITS
**********
Act 1: Scene 1
The camera sweeps over the farmland of Kansas and finally zooms in on the Kent house. The scene takes place in the Kent kitchen. This is a continuation of the previous episode. Chloe and Martha are having a conversation while having a cup of coffee.
Chloe: “So you and Lois found yourselves in Anchorage, Alaska?”
Martha: “And we have no idea how we got there. It’s a good thing that Lois is General Lane’s daughter. Otherwise we probably would still be held for questioning.”
Chloe: “Wow! Where’s Lois now?
Martha: “She at the state capital preparing for the emergency session. Since the worldwide blackout Washington and every state in the country is holding hearings on what caused it and how to prevent another one from happening. I am not looking forward to this.”
Close-on on Chloe.
Chloe: “I guess some type of anti-Zod legislation is out of the question.”
Close-up on Martha.
Martha: “Oh Chloe, please don’t even joke about Zod. How do you explain to the world that an alien criminal from a planet that doesn’t exist anymore, infected every computer in the world with a virus and almost caused the collapse of civilization? Even more, how do you explain to the world that a farmer from a nondescript town in Kansas stopped him? This is just another secret we’re all going to have to keep a lid on.”
As Martha completes her sentence, Lana enters the kitchen. She is clearly upset.
Martha: “Lana, what’s wrong?”
Lana just shakes her head.
Lana: “Hello Mrs. Kent. It’s….”
She doesn’t complete her sentence. She looks like she is struggling to hold back her tears.
Lana: “Chloe, can you take me back to Metropolis?”
Chloe: “Sure. Now?”
Lana just nods her head.
Martha nods her head indicating that she understands the situation. Chloe gets up from her chair and kisses Martha on the cheek. Lana is just standing by the door waiting to leave. Finally both women exit the house. Martha is left wondering what had happened.
From the other end of the house Clark enters the kitchen. He goes to the refrigerator to get himself something to drink. Martha is watching him waiting for him to speak. He says nothing. So she begins the conversation.
Martha: “Clark, what happened? I thought Chloe brought Lana here so you two could sort things out.”
After taking a drink Clark answers in an unemotional, matter of fact way.
Clark: “We did sort things out.”
Martha does not understand his answer or his attitude.
Martha: “I would think that after everything that has happened you two would learn to forgive and forget.”
Clark begins to make his way out of the kitchen. He stops.
Close-up of Clark.
Clark: “Forgiving is the easy part. It’s the Forgetting that’s the hard part.”
He leaves the kitchen.
Close-up of Martha.
Her face shows that her heart is breaking for seeing her son this way.
Act 1: Scene 2
The scene takes place in Chloe and Lana’s dormitory room at Metropolis University. The door opens Lana enters the room first and walks to her desk. Chloe comes in following behind her.
Chloe: “Lana, we just drove 2 hours from Smallville and not one word was said. What’s going on?”
Lana is staring out the window in her room with her back to Chloe.
Lana: “Nothings going on. There’s nothing to talk about.”
Chloe walks to Lana and turns her around so that they are face to face.
Chloe: “Lana, Clark was willing to die to save the world from Zod. I told you everything there is to know about him. There aren’t any secrets anymore.”
Lana: “It doesn’t change anything, Chloe.”
Chloe backs off.
Chloe: “Lana, can’t you learn to forgive and forget?”
Close-up on Lana.
Lana: “I can forgive. I’ll never be able to forget.”
Lana then picks up her hand bag and walks across the room to go out the door.
Chloe: “Where are you going? “
Lana turns around to face Chloe.
Lana: “Not that it’s any of your business but I’m going to see how Lex is doing.”
Chloe is stunned by Lana’s answer.
Chloe: “You’ve got to be kidding me. After everything that’s happened you want to be with Lex.”
Lana: “I’ve had feelings for Lex before all of this and he has feelings for me. Despite all that has happened he’s never lied to me. I owe him the chance to explain his side of the story.”
Chloe walks closer to Lana. She softens her tone.
Chloe: “Lana, I know you well enough to know that it isn’t the money. What on earth does Lex have that Clark doesn’t?”
Close-up on Lana.
Lana: “He’s human.”
Lana leaves and goes out the door.
Chloe is left alone. Her expression is one of not understanding what she just heard Lana say, and frustration.
Act 1: Scene 3

Act 1: Scene 4

Clark is walking towards the center console of the Fortress. The voice of Jor-El is heard.
Jor-El: “Kal-El, your encounter with Zod must have made you realize how important it is to this planet that you stay here and resume your education.
Clark: “That’s not why I’ve come here.”
Jor-El: “Kal-El you must continue….”
Clark doesn’t let Jor-El finish.
Close-up on Clark.
Clark: “I don’t need a lesson plan!”
Jor-El’s voice has stopped.
Clark: “I need someone to talk with. I need…a…a father.”
There is silence in the Fortress.
The view is of Clark standing by himself.
The next view is at a greater distance with Clark standing by himself.
The final view is of the Fortress of Solitude in isolation.
The view goes back to Clark standing by himself. We hear Jor-El’s voice.
Jor-El: “Speak, my son.”
Close-up of Clark.
A smile appears on his face.

Act 2: Scene 1
The scene is in the executive suite of the LuthorCorp building. Lex is standing by a table pouring a drink. The door to the suite opens and Lana enters.
Lex: “Lana.”
Lana: “I wanted to see you. I was worried about you. I wanted to make sure you were alright.”
Lex walks up to Lana and begins to embrace her. He holds her and tries to kiss her on her lips. As he moves forward she moves her head to the side. She embraces him but hesitantly. He is aware that she doesn’t want to kiss him. He continues to hold her but he moves his head back so that he is face to face with Lana.
Lex: “Is something wrong?”
Lana: “Lex, the last time we were together you were hurting me with some type of extraterrestrial strength that you had acquired.”
Lex: “Lana, you know I would never do anything to hurt you. You know that the person who was hurting you wasn’t me. Somehow, Fine had done something which caused me to be possessed by another alien.”
He lets go of the embrace. He tilts his head towards her and shows her the bruise he acquired when he collapsed on the roof of the LuthorCorp building.
Lex: “Lana, look at me. Whatever happened to me, whatever powers I had – it’s gone.”
Lana nods her head in understanding.
Lana: “What do you remember, Lex?”
He begins to walk away from Lana back to the table and the drink he had made.
Lex: “I told you. The last thing I remember is sleeping on the couch at the mansion. After that – nothing. Then I found myself on top of the roof of this building with you and all hell was breaking loose below us in the city.”
Lana meets his eyes.
Lana: “I believe you, Lex.”
Lex smiles and put down his drink. He walks over to her and holds her by her arms.
Lex: “I was hoping we could pick up where we left off.”
Lana smiles uncomfortably and pulls away.
Lana: “That’s another thing I wanted to talk about with you.”
Lex looks at Lana as if he is bracing himself for something he does not want to hear.
Lana: “Lex, you know how I feel about you.”
Lex: “No, Lana I don’t know how you feel about me. You know how I feel about you. You know that I love you. I told you that.”
Lana’s senses heighten at what she has just heard.
Lana: “What did you say?”
Lex: “You know I love you. I told you…”
He stops and catches himself.
Lex: “I must have told you. I’ve been meaning to tell you. I am telling you. Lana, I love you.”
Lana tries to reassure him.
Lana: “Lex, you’ve been through a lot. I’ve been through a lot. I just think we need to slow down for awhile and get our bearings. That’s all. I’ve been doing a lot of thinking and it seems that I just keep jumping from one relationship into another without thinking.”
Lex now shows a little bit of temper.
Lex: “So this is about Clark?”
Lana says in an exasperated voice.
Lana: “No, it’s not about Clark! It’s about me! I just need some time.”
Lex gains control of himself and puts his hands on her shoulders in a reassuring way.
Lex: “Lana, I would never lie to you. I think you understand that I’m…I’m disappointed. But I can wait. I’m not going anywhere.”
Lana smiles and kisses him on the cheek. She turns to leave and walks towards the door.
Lana: “I’ll call you later.”
Lex nods. Then he says.
Lana: “By the way, you never told me what happened up there on the roof.”
Lana stops and is surprised by the question. She turns and smiles uncomfortably.
Lana: “There’s not much to tell. We were up there and you were acting strangely. And then you collapsed and you were back to being yourself.”
Lex is looking straight into her eyes without emotion.
Lex: “Are you sure that’s what happened?”
Lana is having difficulty meeting his eyes.
Lana: “Yeah. That’s it. What else could have happened?”
Lex now has a pseudo smile on his face.
Lex: “Oh nothing. I thought there might be something else. I’ll talk to you later.”
Lana turns and leaves the room.
Lex’s smile has left his face. He is deep in thought.
Act 2: Scene 2
The scene takes place in Senator Martha Kent’s office in the state capital. She is sitting at the desk going through some papers. There’s a knock on the door and it opens. Lois enters.
Martha: “Well how did your meeting go with the governor’s staff?”
Lois walks up to the desk and has a look on her face that indicates she has something to say that Martha is not going to like.
Lois: “Well, I’ve got good news and I’ve got bad news.”
Martha stops her reading and leans back in her chair.
Martha: “Give me the good news.”
Lois takes a deep breathe and continues.
Lois: “Well the state will hold hearings on the virus that affected every computer everywhere in the world. A virus that somehow originated in Smallville.”
Martha lets out a sigh.
Martha: “If you consider that to be good news, what could be the bad news?”
Lois: “You’ve been chosen to lead the committee hearings.”
Martha gets up from her chair.
Martha: “Oh no. Why me?”
Lois: “You’re being hailed as the only politician skilled enough to get to the bottom of things. The Daily Planet ran an editorial this morning saying you’re the only one honest enough to get to the truth.”
Lois sees that Martha does not want the job. Lois does not understand why Martha feels the way she does.
Lois: “Senator Kent, this is a golden opportunity for you. There isn’t a politician anywhere who wouldn’t kill for a chance in the spotlight like this. I don’t understand why you’re so hesitant.”
Martha looks Lois straight in the eyes.
Close-up on Martha.
Martha: “Lois, it’s complicated.”
Act 2: Scene 3
The scene takes place at the Kent farm.
Clark is walking from the barn to the house. A sports car pulls up and stops. Lex gets out of the car and walks towards Clark.
Clark: “What do want, Lex?”
Lex: “Now is that any way to welcome an old friend?”
Clark: “You’re about as welcome here as I am at the mansion.”
Lex makes a smirk at Clark’s remark. The next view is of both of them face to face.
Lex: “I don’t know if you’ve heard but I’ve sort of had something of a traumatic experience. Being possessed by an alien and all.”
Clark: “Your whole life has been a traumatic experience.”
Lex: “You’re not far from the truth, especially since I met you.”
Clark doesn’t say anything. He is waiting for Lex to finish.
Lex: “I don’t remember much. I was hoping you’d help me fill in a few blank spots.”
Clark: “What blank spots?”
Lex: “It seems I remember something about coming here. I seem to remember being thrown across your barn.”
Clark begins to walk away.
Clark: “I think you’re delusional, Lex. Maybe you should get a checkup at Belle Reeve.”
Clark continues to walk away.
Lex: “I’ll tell Lana you said hello. By the way, there’s something concerning Lana I want to thank you for.”
Clark stops and faces Lex.
Clark: “You already told me. I know I lost her. You don’t need to tell me again.”
Lex walks up to Clark so that once again they are face to face.
Lex: “Oh it’s not that. I’m not going to thank you for your monumental screw-up. I always took you for a naïve farm boy. But I guess I was wrong. I guess you taught Lana a few things. I’m grateful to you for that.”
Clark: “What’s that suppose to mean?”
Lex now has his superior smile on his face.
Lex: “It means that I’ve had all kinds of women from all over the world and Lana is… how shall I say it…special. She’s wonderfully inventive.”
There is now anger in Clark’s eyes. He grabs Lex by the lapels of his coat and he is about to lift Lex in the air when he catches himself. The camera view is of Clark’s face. The focus is on his hearing.
We now see what Clark is hearing. At a distance is a car. In the car is a person with a camera. Clark hears the shutter be snapped in the camera.
Lex is waiting for Clark to act but Clark lets go of his lapels and begins to straighten out the fabric and to brush off the dust on Lex’s shoulders.
Clark: “Lex, you may have all the money in world and all the power that comes with it. You may even have Lana. But there is one thing you’ll never have.”
Lex: ‘Oh really. What’s that?”
Clark: “Dignity.”
Clark turns and walks away. He goes into the farm house. Lex is left standing by himself.
End of Act 2

Act 3: Scene 1
The scene takes place at the Luthor mansion. On the desk is a small leather case. Lex is looking at the case with an assistant. Inside are two antique Colt 45 pistols.
Act 3: Scene 2
Lana is walking down the hallway in the mansion towards the main room. She stops at the entrance, not showing herself as she hears Lex and his assistant talking.
Act 3: Scene 3
Assistant: “The case has been constructed according to your specifications Mr. Luthor. There’s a thin lining of lead throughout the inside of the case.”
Lex: “What about the meteor rocks?”
Assistant: “We have a molded block coming here from Metropolis as we speak. It will be in the case by the time you leave for the capital.
Lex: “Good. That will be all for now.”
The assistant walks out of the room and past the entrance where Lana had been listening. Lana is no longer there. As he walks past we see her walk around the corner back towards the entrance. She enters the room.
Act 3: Scene 4
The scene is inside the main room in the mansion.
Lana: “Hi!”
Lex: “Hi! You surprise me. What brings you to the mansion?”
Lana walks up to Lex. She puts her hands on his shoulders and gives him a kiss on his cheek.
Lana: “Do I need a reason? I just wanted to see you.”
Lex smiles as he puts his arms around her. He is about to kiss her on the lips when Lana asks.
Lana: “What’s in the case?”
Lex turns to look at the case. He lets go of Lana and retrieves the case.
Lex: “A gift for the esteemed leader of the blackout investigation committee.”
He opens the case and shows Lana the antique pistols.
Lana: “You’re giving Senator Kent a pair of guns?”
Lex: “LuthorCorp is offering its services to the state and federal government. We are cooperating with all levels of government to determine the cause of the blackout and to develop the means to prevent such a thing from ever happening again. These antique pistols are symbolic of the pioneer spirit of the old west and of our cooperation.”
Lana sees that there is an empty space in the molding inside the case.
Lana: “What is supposed to go in there?”
Lex has to think for a second before he answers.
Lex: “That spot is going to hold a buckle from a holster. We’re shining it up at the moment.”
Lana: “When are you doing this?”
Lex: “In a couple of hours at the opening of the committee meetings. Since Smallville seems to have been the epicenter of the blackout, media from all over the country will be there. Why don’t you come with me? “
Lana: “No. Thank you but no. I think I’d be bored.”
Lex: “Oh I think I can promise you it won’t be boring.”
Lana: “I don’t think my being there is such a good idea, Lex.”
Lex nods his head, understanding that it would uncomfortable for Lana to be in the presence of Martha Kent.
Lex: “I understand.”
Lana turns to leave.
Lex: “Wait. Why are you leaving so soon?”
Lana: “I imagine there’s a lot you have to prepare. I don’t want you to lose your train of thought.”
Lex walks up to Lana and put his arms around her.
Lex: “Please make me lose my train of thought.”
Lana gives him a slight laugh. She gives him a slight kiss on his mouth and removes his arms from him.
Lana: “No. I should go. I’ll be watching you on TV. I’ll talk to you later.”
Lana leaves the room.
Lex watches her leave as he lightly touches his lips with his fingers.
As Lana leaves the room the assistant re-enters. He is carrying a small lead container.
Assistant: We’re ready Mr. Luthor.
He opens the container. In it is a block of Kryptonite which has been molded to fit the empty spot in the case. Lex takes the molded meteor rock, places it in the case and closes the case. As he is finishing another assistant enters the room.
Assistant #2: “Mr. Luthor, you have guests in the conservatory.”
Lex: “Tell them I’ll be with them shortly.”
Lex places the case on his desk and leaves the room.
Act 3: Scene 5
The scene is inside Martha Kent’s office at the state capital.
Chloe and Martha are sitting and having a conversation.
Martha: “So Lana didn’t tell you anything about what happened between Clark and her.
Chloe shakes her head.
Chloe: “Not a thing. She wouldn’t say anything. I sort of got the impression that she has an issue with Clark not being human.”
Martha: “Oh dear. Clark wouldn’t say anything either. All I could get out of him was that all was forgiven but it couldn’t be forgotten.”
Chloe looks at Martha with a curious expression on her face.
Martha: “What is it?”
Chloe: “It’s strange. Lana used almost the exact same words.”
As she finishes her comment there’s a knock on the door. It opens and Clark walks in the room. He is in a blue sport coat and gray slacks along with a light blue shirt and a red tie.
Both Chloe and Martha are surprised to see him.
Martha: “Clark, what are you doing here?”
Chloe: “And why are you not in your usual attire?”
Clark looks surprised that they don’t know why he’s there.
Clark: “Lois called and told me to put on a jacket and tie and get down here. I thought you would know why.”
At that moment Lois walks in behind him.
Lois: “It’s for the photo-op.”
Clark, Chloe and Martha all respond at the same time.
“Photo-op?”
Lois: “LuthorCorp has pledged its cooperation with the investigating committee and is making a commitment to do everything it can to prevent a computer virus blackout again. As a gesture they will be giving a gift to the committee chairman symbolizing that cooperation. Since Senator Kent is being portrayed as the symbol of honesty without politics, it was felt that the close relationship she has with her son should be emphasized. Hence, we have Smallville here in a tie and jacket.”
Clark: “And just who will be the LuthorCorp representative?”
Lois: “I’m sorry Clark. It will be Lex Luthor.”
Clark starts to become agitated.
Clark: ‘Mom, I can’t do this.”
Martha looks at Chloe and Lois.
“Would you two leave Clark and me alone?”
Both Chloe and Lois leave the room. Martha gets up and stands next to Clark.
Martha: “Clark, I know it’s hard for you. It’s hard for me too. But it’s going to be very difficult to get through these hearings as it is without mentioning Zod and Krypton. If you don’t show up it will raise eyebrows. We have enough eyes on Smallville now as it is.”
Close-up on Clark.
He nods his head in understanding.
Close-up on Martha.
She smiles and nods her head in appreciation.
Act 3: Scene 6
The scene is on a road in Smallville.
We see Lana driving her Jeep. She pulls the Jeep over to the side of the road and gets out. She starts walking back in the direction from which she came. She starts walking through a field and we see in front of her the Luthor mansion.
End of Act 3
**********
Act 4: Scene 1
The scene is at the state capital. Everyone is entering a large conference room where the hearings are to be held. News media and television cameras fill the room. In the front of the conference room is a long table at which the senate committee will sit. Martha Kent is standing in front of the table answering questions. Clark, Chloe and Lois are off to the side. Lois is wearing a form fitting outfit which calls attention to her figure. The male members of the media are continually looking in her direction.
Lex Luthor enters the room carrying the brief case. He is dressed in a dark suit, a white shirt with a lavender tie and a white pocket square. The cameras are taking photographs as he makes his way to the front of the room. He sees Clark, Chloe and Lois on the side and walks up to them. He speaks to Lois.
Lex: “How did a muffin peddling, college dropout like you ever get a job at the state capital?”
Lois is taken aback by Lex’s rudeness. He sees how the male members of the media are ogling Lois.
Lex: “Never mind. Stupid question.”
He leaves before anyone can answer him and walks up to the front of the room and stands next to Martha. He shakes hands with Martha. The smiles on both of their faces are forced. Martha begins to speak.
Martha: “Ladies and gentlemen, as chairman of this committee I’d like to welcome the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of LuthorCorp, Mr. Lex Luthor. As you know LuthorCorp is one the leading technological research corporations in the world. Mr. Luthor has pledged his cooperation and assistance in these hearings.
Lex: “Ladies and gentlemen, the Kent and Luthor family have a long history together. So if you don’t mind I’d like to bring up here my good friend, Senator Kent’s son, Clark.”
All of the cameras focus on Clark. Clark is taken aback by the attention. He looks at his mother with an expression that seems to be saying “what do I do now?” His mother returns the look with an expression that seems to be saying “I don’t like this anymore than you.” Lois nudges Clark with her elbow.
Lois: “Go on. Get up there Smallville. This is your big moment.”
Clark reluctantly joins Martha and Lex. Lex extends his hand to Clark. Clark shakes it without smiling.
Lex: “Senator Kent is correct in stating that LuthorCorp has pledged its cooperation in these hearings. Although I have often been portrayed as a city slicker out of place in the heartland of America, I’d like to tell you that nothing is further from the truth. The history of Kansas and of our great nation is that of a pioneering spirit and of all segments of society and government working together for the common good. Together, we will do whatever it takes to get to the bottom of the blackout incident and to ensure that such a thing never happens again. As a symbol of our cooperation I’d like to present to the senator these antique Colt 45 revolvers. Although many of you consider these to be the tools of violence, in the taming of the old west in the hands of the law, these were the tools of truth, justice and the American way.”
Lex takes the brief case and opens it right in front of Martha and Clark.
The camera is on Lex’s face as if he is waiting for something to happen.
The camera then switches to Martha’s face. She has a confused look on her face.
The camera then switches to Clark’s face. He is trying to hold back from laughing.
We hear people begin in the room begin to laugh. Photographs are being taken at a furious pace.
The camera focuses back on Lex. This is not the reaction he expected. He looks down into the case. The revolvers and the kryptonite have been removed. In its place are lumps of black coal. Lois walks up to Lex. She pulls a piece of coal out of the case and holds it in front of Lex’s face.
Lois: “I may be a muffin peddling college dropout but even I know what an antique Colt 45 looks like.”
As she puts the coal back in the case she looks at her hands.
Lois: “Lex, you’ve made me dirty my hands.”
Lois takes Lex’s white pocket square and wipes the black coal dust off of her hands with it. She then places the square back in his suit pocket with the soiled part showing.
The last shot of the scene is a close-up of Lex with an embarrassing look on his face.
Act 4: Scene 2
The scene is on a road in Smallville. The camera focuses on the wheels of a vehicle that is traveling very quickly. We do not see the entire vehicle or the driver. The wheels slow down and then stop. We see the bottom part of the front driver side door open and two legs come out. We see that the legs are slender and are clothed in a pair of stylish jeans and high heeled boots. The camera is raised a little and we see that the person is carrying a gym bag. The person is walking through a wooded area and then stops. We see the hands of the person opening the gym bag. A Colt 45 gun is pulled out and thrown into a lake. Another Colt 45 is pulled out of the bag and thrown away. Finally, the kryptonite block is pulled out of the bag. The camera backs up to show the person looking at it. The person is Lana Lang. She has a smile on her face as she throws the kryptonite block into the water.
Act 4: Scene 3
The scene is in Lana’s dormitory room. The door opens and Lana enters the room. She puts her gym bag on her bed but she does not take off her coat. There is a sliding window near her desk that she opens. She opens one of the drawers of her desk and takes out a candle. She places the candle on sill of the open window. Then she pulls out the chair from her desk, sits down and waits.
After a few seconds of waiting a thin beam of light streams through the night into the window and lights the candle.
A joyous smile comes up on Lana’s face. She jumps up from her chair and hurries out of her room, leaving behind her personal bag and leaving the candle burning in the window.
Act 4: Scene 4
The scene is behind one of the dormitory buildings. It is unlit. Lana is waiting near the building. We have an aerial view of Lana. The camera closes in on her as she is looking in the opposite direction. We now have a ground level view of Lana. Behind her Clark lands softly from the air. She is unaware of his presence.
Clark: “Lana.”
Lana turns around at the sound of his voice. Her face lights up as she sees him. The camera then focuses on Clark. He is smiling and his eyes are bright. They slowly walk to each other, extend their arms, and take hold of each others hands.
For a moment, they are just standing next to one another looking into each other’s eyes.
Clark then picks up Lana. She puts her arms around his neck. He slowly lifts off the ground and the couple goes up into the night sky.
Act 4: Scene 5
The scene is the dormitory room. Chloe enters the room.
Chloe: “Lana?”
There is no answer. Chloe looks around the room. She sees the gym bag thrown on the bed. She sees the chair pushed away from the desk. She finally sees the candle burning in the window.
The scene ends with Chloe having a puzzled look on her face.
Act 4: Scene 6
The scene is on top of a windmill in a field in Smallville. Clark and Lana are sitting facing each other. Their arms are around each other. The heads and faces are together. Lana has her hand on the back of Clark’s head.
Lana: “Say it again.”
Clark pulls back his head and looks at Lana with a slightly amused expression.
Clark: “Why?”
Lana: “Because I like to hear you say it.”
She pulls his head toward hers so that she’s whispering in his ear.
Lana: “Because I need to hear you say it.”
We see Clark’s face as he is about to whisper in Lana’s ear. The view then switches to Lana. We see her face as Clark is whispering.
Clark: “I love you, Lana. I love you with all of my heart.”
As he is saying this we seeing a soothing expression of Lana’s face.
Lana: ‘Oh, you love me.”
They separate their heads and are looking at each other as they begin to talk.
Clark: “I don’t like what we’re doing. I don’t like lying to everyone. But I don’t see any other way. The less people know about us, the better.”
Lana: “I don’t like it either. I don’t like being with Lex, Clark. There’s a darkness in him that infects everyone around him, including me. It’s like a disease. If you weren’t here I might have been part of that darkness by now.”
Clark: “Lana, I don’t want to make you do anything you don’t want to do.”
Lana: “I know that, Clark. But Lex is dangerous. He remembers more than he’s letting on. Zod told me that he was only bringing Lex’s true nature to the surface. I have to do something. We have to do something.”
Clark: “I spoke to Jor-El about this. He thinks that in some small way I’m beginning to realize that I’m here for a reason. He thinks you’re helping me discover my destiny.”
They look at each other and then they are drawn together in an intense kiss. For a moment they separate.
Lana: “Clark, I want to be with you.”
Clark: “You are with me, Lana.”
Lana: “Clark, I love you and I... NEED... TO... BE... WITH... YOU.”
Clark finally realizes what Lana is saying. He pulls away. He is distressed.
Clark: “Oh Lana. I don’t know.”
Lana pulls Clark to her.
Lana: “Clark, take me to your loft.”
Clark has a concerned look on his face.
Lana: “Please.”
They continue to look in each other’s eyes as Clark picks her up. They slowly lift off the ground. We see the couple heading into the night - the two of them getting smaller and smaller until they are gone.
Fade to black.
