. . .what did ya think of the season???'
I voted choice 1 cuz. . .
A) It's the 1st season I've seen beginning to end, and the drama and waiting each week made it exciting
B) Excluding plotholes, I thought it was just a really good season. I'm not picky

I thought that it was a good solid season with amazing eps, very good eps, ok eps, and bad eps. Every season has some excellent, then some good, and then some bad.
My favorite season is still season 2 followed by 3 then 5 then 1 then 4.

The season had some low spots like when they killed off JK but was good to have Clark and Lana break up it was time to end having Lana asking what was Clark hiding from her. It is time to have Lois and Clark become an item.

Hey, you're not the only who got hooked this season. I was constantly bugging my older brother to watch Smallville for a couple years but to no avail. Finally, in December 2005 I put together a compilation of season 1 in VHS (copying from my dvd boxset and editing out the unimportant stuffs). I then gave him the edited tape. After some weeks, he called me and asked me if he can borrow seasons 2-4 box sets. He's now hooked on the show every thursday and thought season 5 rocks. yay !

Looking back on it, S5 looks sort of mediocre to me. Not awful like S4 was, but just kind of mediocre and bland. None of the episodes really stand out much to me, except maybe the first three episodes of the season and Oracle. I could have just watched those four episodes and been perfectly happy missing everything else.:p

Below average. It was great and really bad, and unfortunately, the really bad is how the season has come to an end.

I think it was an uneven season but there were too many good episodes to say that it was a bad season imo. Plus there wasnt an ep where I said that this was one of the worst eps of the series, unlike season 4 which had a couple of those. So season 5 is not on the level of season 2 or 3 but imo it was third best.

I don't think any particular episode stands out for me, not like Memoria or Perry or any number of eps I could naem from prior episodes. But there were some really great moments in Season 5. There seemed to be more scenes this season that I really loved than in previous seasons. I loved the seaon in Solitude w/ Martha, Clark and Shelby -- but I didn't love the episode. I loved the scene in Mortal w/ Clark going though the air ducts but I didn't love the episode. I loved the scene where Lois thanked Clark for helping her in Exposed. Didn't love the episode. So it was a weird season. Very uneven writing.

I voted also on mediocre. None of the episodes blew me away and that's why I hope that this season ends on a high note. Even if it doesn't, I'll still keep watching because overall SV is a good show with great actors.

Even if the episodes themselves were good, the overall direction of the show doesn't impress me anymore. They really dropped the ball in Reckoning and now the show is a mess. The episodes are still entertaining and they always will be with an action show, but storyline wise, the show isn't holding together well at all.

Seasons 1-3 remain tops in my book. Season 5 was a solid effort -- a few clunkers, a bit of amnesiatic writing, some really thrilling moments (Clark's various fly/jumps) and a few really good episodes (Reckoning, Sliver, Hidden, Mercy) though. Ranks above season 4.
Kal-El1138

Season five has been quite the roller coaster. We've gotten some really fantastic, gripping and amazing episodes. "Hidden", "Arrival", "Oracle", "Splinter", "Solitude" and "Void" come to mind. But on the other hand, we've had some real crap thrown our way in the form of "Mortal", "Thirst", "Aqua", "Mercy", "Fade", "Vengeance" and "Exposed".
"Reckoning" sits in the middle for me as an episode that could have been something really special that just turned out "okay".
A fairly entertaining season that has had it's share of bad, good and outright ugly.

Haven't seen the season finale, but I'd say season five ranks high with me. It was the most thrilling and suspenseful season. It had quite a few cliffhangers, jaw-dropping moments, the Lex/Clark enmity grew, Lionel was in it a lot, good Clois moments....overall a great season. Ranks up there with seasons three and one for me.

This season was pretty good. It had the opener, which was great, and was diminished by the take on the ongoing Clark/Lana drama.
The characters this season were farrrrr more relevant than Season 4, which may be the first example of a filler season (outside the finale and episoded like Run). It seems the show is finally picking up some storytelling momentum, paying closer attention to mythos, and taking characters where they need to go again.
I for one am already looking forward to season 6 and perhaps beyond.

When I first read some of these posts I thought what s5 was was only ok...i thought about it and i think i agree to some extent. I listed out the number of episodes for each season i liked and left a good impression on me as compared to the whole season.
s1: 9/21
s2: 8/23
s3: 10/22
s4: 5/22
s5: 8/22
so i guess s5 has only been ok compared to some of the others

It's the ups and downs of this season that make it hard to evaluate. Some episodes like Hypnotic had grizzly aweful scenes, but then there was the scene between Martha and Lois -- which was hilarious. Almost every episode had a scene where I thought - cool. AND a scene where I thought - eeeesh. This was the most uneven writing of any season of SV.

S5 started out so strong. The second half of the season after Reckoning had some filler episodes for me but overall I was really entertained by S5. I have high hopes for the momentum to continue into S6 even with the ratings slump of the last few episodes. Once Superman Returns this summer I hope it will energize SV with new found fans. We have to hope for good writing to keep the new viewers though. That's the leap of faith that is a little scary.

S5 went to both ends of the spectrum for me. Some eps were great, some eps were awful, some eps were okay. The best thing about it all was the character development within those eps, even the bad and mediocre ones. It's all been very spotty and inconsistent, but that's not something that shocks me anymore as far as SV is concerned.
The overall concensus from me would be that this was a general step in the right direction. Wasn't spectacular or amazing by any stretch of the imagination, but it was progress from the debaucle of S4. And when I think of S5, I think of the things I liked rather than the things I didn't.
I, however, have not voted and will not vote until after tonight's episode.

I want to see intensity with this finale. No soft stuff. Let me see Brainiac face off with Clark and have Lex and Lionel involved as well. Good fights is something that this show desperately needs. Pushing a guy 30 feet is not what I call a fight. I need some punching.

Even before the finale i can say that this was the best season by far... it had the greatest episodes of the series(the appearance of the fortress, bad kryptonians, brainiac coming to town, flying/superjumps, deaths and emotional moments, nice shower scenes  and the most important, great special effects...). Of course it also had some episodes not that great, but it was nothing compared with the worst episodes of the previous seasons... ;)

I voted for the first choice. This is the first season I've watched beginning to end. I thought a couple episodes were just "fillers" to have something in that time slot, but none stood out as being The Worst Ep of the Series. (I thought that S4 had a lot of "filler" eps and a few Worst Eps of the Series. That plotline with the stones was a bad idea.) Plus, the Lexana, Chlark, and Mionel (my beloved ships) were all really strong this season. I also enjoyed watching the rise (nay) and the fall (yay) of Clana. All in all, this was one of my fav seasons.

By far my favorite. I enjoyed S1-4...but this past one screamed Superman in the making to me. Which I always enjoy.

That alone makes S5 better!!
Great job on Season 5.....
I think it started off good, it got great towards the middle and near the end faded just a bit....
I think the writers became to vague towards the end....More plotholes, not knowing what to do with characters and they could not seem to break the barrier of of the FOTW....
Overall a great season!!

I voted "pretty good", but this is the only season of SV that actually annoyed me. And this is the only season of SV that actually made me HATE a regular character on the show. And this was the season that had a 100th episode, and didn't do with it what they could've.
So, color me indecisive on this question.

Well..in this season we had Clark and Chloe growing closer in friendship, maybe more? ( nah, but we can hope).
We had the death of JK that served no purpose ( Clark is still NOT a man).
We had Fine, cool addition.
We had Lione-el stealing the show.
We had Lex showing his true colours more and more and Lana seeing less and less.
We had Lana. Period. No development, nothing other than becoming even more of a "ball and chain".
We had a very underused Martha and Lois.
And we had Zod, kind of, well, not really...sort of...well, we had Lex in a trench coat being evil and wanting to take over the world...hmmm is that Zod or just Lex being Lex ??
So, what did we have ?
We had Lionel-el !

The season started out great, but when it went in decline, it really went in decline. (I was so angry over that "Thirst" episode. I mean wtf, people?) I'm not sure how to feel about this season. For me the last few eps have been good and I loved the finale. I'm just hoping that they'll take advantage of the new (and better) storylines presented with the intro of Zod/Lion-el/Lexod/ Chlark (even).

meh, it was mostly OK. Nothing great, nothing horrible. Wait, I take that back, remembering Aqua. The only reason I voted "pretty good" was because of one episode that went beyond great, it was superb. I am talking about Hidden. This episode juse rocked in every aspect. I mean, where else can you get clana, humor, clark getting shot, clark dying, lion-el, clark waking up in the fortress of solitude to see lion-el telling him some one is going to die, clark flying 8546184627834 miles away to destroy a nuclear missle, the beauteous clana reunion, and some wholesome Pa Kent lectures in one episode? No where else but Hidden.
IMHO, Reckoning.. no that doesn't deserve a capital... reckoning was the biggest disappointment of S5. TPTB promised us greatness, and gave us complete crap! Nothing surprised me, not even Pa's death. I BROUGHT FRICKIN CHOCOLATE CHIPS TO MUCH ON WHILE WATCHING THE INFAMOUS 100TH EPISODE AND WAS SO DISGUSTED I ONLY ATE LIKE 2!!!!!!
And I do realize I'm rambling, but S5 just wasn't great. I like season 3 the best, then 4, then 5, then 2, then 1.

Overall there was only one ep I could have done completely without: Thirst. Blech. There were a few that were so-so in my opinion: Exposed, Tomb, and kind of Hypnotic, although it did advance the story arc and finally broke up Clana.
But there were some total standouts for me: Arrival, Mortal, Hidden, Splinter, Reckoning (not that I actually loved it, but I get it, and it stood out), Cyborg (I liked Cyborg. A lot)...and I liked Oracle and Vessel.
And I enjoyed the filler eps. It's fiction. Science fiction. So I don't expect it to be realistic. I also try not to--although it is pretty hard--impose "what I would have done" expectations on the eps. Even though it is fun to rework them afterward.
And as I said before: I'm easily entertained.

I loved season 5! There were a few episodes that weren't as good here and there (Hypnotic, Tomb, Aqua, etc.), but other than that, this season had some of my absolute favorite episodes (Solitude, Oracle, Hidden). I liked the fact that they had a lot less meteor freak episodes than some of the previous seasons. I also found the Lion-El thing to be pretty interesting.
The Finale was good. :) It might not have been as good as last year's Commencement, but I still found it enjoyable. I think the premiere will be great. I am hoping that the reason the finale wasn't as good was because they were saving the good stuff for the premiere.

I think the best of the season was over by Solitude with Cyborg being the only one later that didn't have me screaming at the screen. The top three Characters were written horribly, IMO.
I think some ideas were spreading between SV and That 70's Show. Fez calls Hyde, you Magnificent Bast***, and they had Jackie going after Fez after she lost Kelso and Hyde. Who else just pulled that same crap. No wonder both shows are in the ratings toilet. Wait, didn't T.70's S lose two main characters this season and STILL beat SV?
Some one should stand in the mirror and look for a reflection because this show needs some reflection and direction or a freaking stake thru the heart.
This season had it all. Great shows like Hidden and Solitude. Some solid shows to display the Actors like Mercy, Tomb, Splinter, and Void.
But worst it had it's truly bad episodes topped by Hynotic. Bad FOTW, senseless sex, Whipped Lex, and Heartless jerk:Clark.
How could a season start So strong and end so pathetically lame?
Vessel, IMO, was the weakest of the Cliffhangers. Too much Lexana and lame scenerios thru-out the episode.
I really believe that if that had left Clana alone and in the background and forgot the stupid Lex obsession with Lana, that SV ratings would still be in thee 5 million range.

awesome season everything i wanted happened or pretty much I mean
- a lot of Chlark
- Lexana (is a good twist to get Clana turned off)
- a lot of Lionel :p
- Mionel finally
- fine/brainiac brought interest
- not too many fotw's
- only two really bad episodes i can live with that

I don't think the show will ever live up to S1 standards again. However, I do feel that S3 had the best cliffhanger out of all the seasons. I didn't like Jonathan dying this season. Although, I really liked Aqua this season. I voted for mediocre.

I so can't wait for Season 6! :D

Well, I would've said it SUCKED...but there were a lot of episodes that I really liked, some of my favorites being Arrival, Hidden, Splinter, Mortal, and Solitude. But episodes like Fanatic, Fragile, Hypnotic, Tomb, Void, and Exposed really just kind of ruined it for me. So that's why I ended up voting for Below Average.

I'd say the season was pretty good.
There weren't any great, great episodes, but there were very few real clunkers. Like most years, the season was stronger in the early going. This year the fall off after "Reckoning" was just brutal. Even the season finale didn't pick things back up.
On the other hand, Clark and Lana progressed a lot. One of my favorite things about SV is how clearly JK is the model for Superman. Seeing Clark trying to behave like his Dad was a nice subtle progression. I hated what they were doing with Lana at first, since I like the character and want her happy. However, it makes perfect sense. Lana has always been blind about her boyfriends and used Clark as a crutch. With Lexod as the boyfriend and Clark out of the picture, anything can happen. I haven't felt this much possibility with Lana, since 'Crusade'. Even better, she has at least had really been Clark's girlfriend.
On the other hand, I hate what they've done with Lex. His scenes with Lana are horrible. He was way too weak and passive in the whole Fine thing. MR is one of the few actors on SV who can carry a whole episode. Putting him into a weak sub-plot is rough.
Worse, Martha, Johnathan and Lionel are key supporting characters that are either gone or wildly bad plot-lines. Martha as a State Senator just doesn't quite work, which is taken from odd to laughable by "Lois Lana, college drop-out/political guru". I guess it gives her and Lionel an excuse to be in scenes together. However, that stuff is totally awful. Her husband is barely dead.
That said, the Fine arc was pretty good. It took a couple unexpected (if not perfectly set-up) twists. The Chloe-Clark stuff was awesome. It was a slow, subtle set-up that paid off really well in the finale. Their chemistry is better than expected, so I am looking forward to seeing more of it in S6.

This plot line is definitely getting on my nerves as well ... it needs to get killed in S6.

Outside of Lois Lane, Martha Kent, Brianic, and Lionel....this season sucked.
I held Clark Kent in such high standards until Smallville Season 5. How dumb is the BDA? A rooster could out think him.

Though Lois wasn't anywhere as annoying as she was in S4, I still don't think she added any value to S5. Lex was just a huge disappointment for me.

The last half of the season was SO underwhelming that it has been two months since the finale and I haven't bothered to watch any repeats or recordings of the entire season in that time. I stopped enjoying the show after Solitude with only Cyborg getting a second viewing since then. IMO this was the worst season and for too, too many reasons. Two big ones, Lexod and Lexana. Pointless as to be ridiculous.

Ok exposed and fanatic really sucked, but not as bad as devoted and facade. I have a really big problem with Lana doing Lex. Also MArtha needs a smack for trusting lionel of all people, regardless of him being possessed by JOr El. Season 3 had way too many emotionally powerful episodes to be matched by any subsequent season. Season 5 may not have matched season 3, but it was way better than season 4.

Mediocre.
There was just something missing. My wife and I watch it every week and after this season we were very disappointed. I'm not sure what the main problem was. Does everyone remember how the first episode could have had a nice action fight with the 2 Kryptonians, yet the fight is over in about 5 minutes? Or how about we wait for Brainiac to be this brilliant supercomputer-like entity, only to end up with 5 minutes of fighting Clark and being on the sideline for most of the season? I just think they could have done so much more with the characters they had, and instead it was all drama and waiting and no action. Especially since they milked this Lana/Clark relationship until it was way past dead. The worst part was how one episode would end with a betrayal, and then the next week they are talking again like it didn't happen? Continuity? Maybe in some departments, but not all. I do believe they had some great episodes, especially with Lionel (I’ve thought this whole season he was going to be the character that kept this season interesting, and I believe he was). However, there were still too many letdowns. When I was watching the 100th episode, I kept thinking to myself, “This is too good to be true…the writers would never have the guts to pull off something as awesome as this without some memory wipe or time reversal.” Well, unfortunately, I was right.
I was always excited to watch Smallville week after week, but after this season, it will take some major action and some major steps forward to get me excited again. This may be the first season where I don’t buy the DVD because I don’t know if I can stand watching it all over again.

mediocre, true it has the most indepth story line yet, but rather clana made it depressing, lexana... johnathan... it kind of contradicts itself by having the best and worst of occurences.

I thought Season 5 sucked the big one. Vengeance and Fragile for me were the only two good episodes. Sure there were some cool moments like the introduction of the FOS, the missile ride in Hidden or Brainiac trying to free Zod in Solitude but these moments were few and far between. For me the filler episodes which take up about 75% of the season were even more tedious and bland than usual. I will never understand why Smallville has over 20 episodes a season as they have struggled to come up with more than 10 decent episodes in a season since the superb Season 3. The great General Zod being used in a pathetic possession storyline in Vessel summed up season 5 for me. It was cheap, tired and devoid of any spark of imagination. Smallville also hit a new low in ripping off other films and TV shows with blatant panic room, buffy, saw, and flatliners clones. Apparently Clark will defeat Zod in the season opener. I don't know how. They have turned a great and decent character into an imbecile in the past two seasons who never learns or listens and who could be outsmarted by a one legged hippo.

To each his own. nOW THAT SEASON 5 is over , has anybody seen the Aquaman pilot? Its on itunes. I saw it, its like a who's who of old Smallville villans. Lol LEE, the guy from "HUG" , Kara (supergirl), and the girl from Vengence, Denise Quinones(what a hottie) .
It was decent, I'd say about as good as the "Mortal" episode. I think the reason the CW didn't pick up the series is the buget would be too high. I mean, this pilot had more SFX than 2/3 of season 5 Smallville.
But as a show, it seemed more about the Sci-fi part of the show than any interpersonal relationships. As such its a little too over the top for prime time. It would be suited to be one of those saturday afternoon WB11 shows, like Xena , Mutant X, The Lost World and such.

I always found it a strange idea for a tv show. I mean how many water based episodes could you have? I think if there was ever to be a spin-off it should be the Flash. The episode run introduced an interesting take on the character and he was not as clean cut as Clark and had that edge that made him more interesting.

I've just watched season 5 and it was very good. Very good. I voted choice 1 but I really can't remember the other seasons. In one of the first few episodes Jonathan says something about the best lessons being learned through tragedy or hardship and I think the season really reflects that while still being fun and interesting.

TitanTV's Summary of Season:6 Episode:1
The sixth-season opener finds Clark imprisoned in the Phantom Zone, deprived of his powers. Meanwhile, Lex/Zod keeps Lana captive so she can sire him an heir; Lois and Martha crash near the Fortress of Solitude, where Jor-El tells Martha how to kill Zod; and Chloe reunites with Jimmy Olsen (Aaron Ashmore).

Season 5 was AWESOME up until Cyborg then it fell off a CLIFF!!!! It may have been the absolute worst dropoff intraseason of any show in the history of TV!!!! Of course the fact that the first few episodes (Arrival, Mortal, Hidden, Solitude, Splinter, Reckoning were among the BEST this show has to offer compounded this even more!! Lexana was contrived, disgusting, and moronic. The gap between the Brainiac centric episodes and his return was pathetic. The "Zod appearance" was quite possibly the dumbest concept ever in a Sci Fi show. And most of the last 8-9 episode absolutely sucked and were among the worst in the series including the WORST finale in the series, Vessel. I am not a big fan of the S6 premiere, Zod, either but I gotta give it credit for somehow, someway almost fixing the decimation that ended up being the prior season.

Season 5 Review
ARRIVAL
So these two Kryptonian crazies come to Smallville and start blowing up cops, Lana tells Lex about the alien ship she saw, Chloe almost turns into a Chloesicle, and then tells Clark that she knows his secret (almost -- he has to fill in the alien part), it’s Lionel’s turn in a padded cell, some black ooze drips out of the ship and turns into James Marsters, and Lex just wants to know what’s going on. Oh, and it’s... the return of the Clana.
9/10
MORTAL
Clark and Lana run off during a barn-building to make out, and end up being attacked by Belle Reeve escapees we’ve never seen before who want revenge on Clark, and to get something from one of Lex’s secret labs. Chloe and Clark manage to save the day -- without super-powers for the latter since he didn’t listen to Daddy Jor-El. Oh, and Clark and Lana take their relationship to the next level... eww.
6/10
HIDDEN
Clark gets shot and dies! Well, but Jor-El-in-Lionel makes him all better (including his returned powers) -- except now someone close to him is going to pay the price. Plus, Smallville almost goes nuclear, but Clark takes on a missile and wins!
8/10
AQUA
Arthur Curry doesn’t like people messing with his fishy friends, so he takes on Lex Luthor’s newest sonar weapon, which is apparently hot to Lois Lane, or maybe it’s just the way he saved her from drowning and can pull off wearing green and orange together. At any rate, Lois has her first super-hero heartbreak, and Clark has a new future-JLA friend who likes to say “bro” a lot.
8/10
THIRST
Lana turns into a vampire and wants to suck Clark’s blood! Plus, she blows up another fanged freak with her heat vision while Chloe tries to impress Princess Leia, a Daily Planet editor with her article about the whole fright-fest. Even Clark Kent in a Zorro costume and Chloe as a Catholic schoolgirl couldn’t save this sorry excuse for a Halloween plot.
1/10
EXPOSED
Strippers on Smallville? Eww. Plus, it’s a Bo Duke-Luke Duke reunion, with stereotypical rambling car chase! I don’t really care...
1/10
SPLINTER
Smallville finally gets back on track when a mysterious someone sends Lana a silver meteor rock, which Clark pricks his finger on, and no, it won’t put him into a deep sleep. Instead, it makes him all crazy-paranoid and believe everyone’s turning against him. Scary, adrenaline-pounding stuff!
8/10
SOLITUDE
Martha is afflicted with a strange Kryptonian illness, and Clark’s new Kryptonian buddy, Milton Fine, says Jor-El’s behind it, and destroying the Fortress is the only way to find a cure. Yeah, great plan, except that not-so-Fine’s really Brainiac, and wants to release Zod instead. Luckily, Chloe proves herself again as the best sidekick ever, allowing Clark to save his mom AND the world!
8/10
LEXMAS
It’s a Wonderful Life... Lex style! Except he doesn’t jump off a bridge to save a drowning angel. Nope, he just gets shot and hallucinates about Chlark together (*sigh*) being married to Lana and having a son with another kid on the way, living in suburbia, and being loved by everyone in his community, including Jonathan Kent. Too bad Lana dies and Lionel doesn’t care, which makes Lex all the more convinced that he has to do everything he can to continue amassing money and power to keep things like that from happening and wrecking his happiness. Mama Luthor is NOT pleased.
9/10
FANATIC
A college gal reeeeeally loves Lex Luthor -- so much so that she’s willing to kill Jonathan Kent and shave her head to prove it! That’s about as crazy as the general plot for this episode, which I didnt’ particularly care for.
2/10
LOCKDOWN
I shot the sheriff! Well, actually, it was the psycho deputy who killed Sheriff Adams, and put Lex and Lana (in the former’s safe room) in jeopardy, because they’re mad about the cover-up of the alien attack from “Arrival.” It’s a fair episode, with a few interesting beats that lead to future Season 5 & 6 storylines.
5/10
RECKONING
I tell ya, this is one episode that I worried about for months. I was so convinced that Chloe could be the one to die. However, this episode ended up being amazing! In this episode, we had Lana learning Clark’s secret, getting engaged to him, and dying, and then Clark had to pull a switcheroo and convince Jor-El to help him rewrite history, inevitably leading to another Lionel vs. Jonathan smackdown and his other father’s death -- tragic! Still, this has to be one of the best episodes of the season and possibly the series.
10/10
VENGEANCE
Clark’s got some serious anger issues after what happened to his dad in the previous episode, so he’s hitting criminals where it hurts, especially the one who stole his dad’s watch from Martha. But there’s another gal, the Angel of Vengeance, who was a penchant for kicking butts, taking names, and wearing Acuvue contact lenses. Her particular brand of vigilante justice (and attempted murder of Lionel) puts Clark back on the right path.
8/10
TOMB
Chloe appears to be going a little crazy, which turns out to be due to the spirit of a dead girl who was stuffed in the Talon wall by a sick, twisted orderly from a mental institution. She uses Chloe as her proxy to get revenge on her murderer, and Clark convinces our dear blond reporter to face her fears and visit her mom at the hospital. This episode was too dark and creepy for my taste, even with some good Chlark moments. Scary.
2/10
CYBORG
Victor Stone is “The Million Dollar Man!” Okay, not really, but he’s got enough mechanical parts in him to make him become dubbed “Cyborg,” of future Teen Titans fame. Clark helps him avoid getting recycled for spare parts by Lex and his scientists, and reunites him with his girlfriend (we’ll see how long that lasts) which makes him and Lana reevaluate their relationship (again).
7/10
HYPNOTIC
Simone uses a hypnotic stone to charm Clark into becoming willing to do anything for her -- including attempting to kill Lex Luthor and ditch Lana Lang. Clark decides to let the breakup stick, but Lex and Chloe team up to thwart Simone’s other nefarious plans. Not my favorite episode by a long shot.
2/10
VOID
Lana sees dead people -- and this time it’s for real! Thanks to a kryptonite serum in a syringe, she gets to have little chats with her deceased parents without visiting the cemetery, but Clark’s not at all happy with her walk on the dark side, and tries to help her avoid becoming the newest corpse in the graveyard. Boring and contrived, much?
1/10
FRAGILE
When Maddy VanHorn is around, lots of glass gets broken. It just goes to show you, kids who live in houses with lots of glass shouldn’t have evil dads with weird meteor powers. Still, once again, Clark shows that he’s a great role model and protector of kids, and I enjoyed seeing the friendship he built with Maddie, as well as the screentime Lois had. Her character really started to shine by this part of the season. Plus, Lexana begins to become a reality... The horror... Still, it can’t ruin what is otherwise a pretty nice episode.
7/10
MERCY
In this “Saw” ripoff (I’ve never and will never seen “Saw,” but that’s what everyone compares this episode to), a disgruntled employee wants Lionel dead, so he charbroils his limo driver and puts the elder Mr. Luthor through a series of grueling mental and physical tests, including the kidnapping and near-drowning of Martha Kent! Luckily, Lionel’s wits and Clark and Lex’s brief team-up lead to his surviving long enough for our good ol’ C.K. to rescue Papa Luthor and Mama Kent -- and allow the former to see him use his powers! Gulp!
8/10
FADE
Graham Garrett, a hired hitman, gets saved by Clark, and tries to repay him by using his chameleon-like powers to attempt to kill Lex and dating Lois. Clark doesn’t want that kind of gratitude, but he does want to harp at Lana (who doesn’t want to listen) about why she shouldn’t be hanging out with Lex so much. Who really cares?
5/10
ORACLE
Chloe, Lois, and Martha throw Clark a surprise birthday party, complete with lopsided blue rum cake, which ends in his dad (it seems) telling him to go kill Lionel Luthor. Clark almost believes the treacherous visions he receives, until he realizes at the end (about time) that his dad would never provoke him to murder anybody, and it turns out that Brainiac’s behind the thing, with something more dangerous just around the corner... I was happy to see John Schneider again, but not as impressed with this penultimate episode as I was “Calling” or “Obscura.”
7/10
VESSEL
Lana views Lex getting abducted, with the snow-capped mountains of Kansas in the background! Blooper alert! But the rest of the episode rocks, as Lex is turned into the vessel of Zod, Chloe and Clark share the best... kiss... EVER, and Clark gets sucked into the Phantom Zone! Very rockin’, high-energy, crazy episode, complete with worldwide technology blackouts, Lois and Martha taken for a ride into the arctic against their will, and Lana kissing Lex on the Luthorcorp rooftop as Metropolis burns... How will Clark get out of this one?!
10/10
Here’s the breakdown:
2x 10/10
2x 9/10
6x 8/10
3x 7/10
1x 6/10
2x 5/10
0x 4/10
0x 3/10
3x 2/10
3x 1/10
Average: 6/10 (or just barely above average)
Season 5 had some very interesting and enjoyable high points. “Reckoning” and “Vessel” rank up among the most pivotal and exciting episodes of the series, in my opinion, and there are several very strong arcs of episodes, especially the set between “Splinter” and “Lexmas,” with really only “Fanatic” as a dud before you get to “Reckoning.” Unfortunately, the parts that were NOT so good were REALLY not so good. I know that the storylines were bound to get a lot more “mature” once Clark was out of high school, but I think they went a little too far too quickly, and threw in some things that were wholly unnecessary for the show. Season 3 showed us that you can have some dark elements to the storyline without making it trashy, but several episodes were just plain raunchy, in my humble opinion.
On the good side of things, Lois became more interesting and less annoying for me this season (she just tended to grate on my nerves in Season 4 a bit). I LOVED the big jump and the near-death experience and what it set up for Clark in “Hidden.” Clark and Chloe’s friendship became much closer and tighter as a result of him knowing that she had discovered his secret (thanks to Alicia Baker in Season 4’s “Pariah”). James Marsters made a very cool recurring guest star as Brainiac.
What didn’t work for me? Strippers, vampires, and I was pretty tired of the Clana roller coaster by Season 5, if I wasn’t already. I’m conflicted about how I feel about Jonathan’s death. I think it was necessary, but it was still sad to see such a great actor and iconic character leave the show.
So, to sum things up, Season 5 had some very high points, but falls far behind the greats like Season 3 due to some real clunkers. A fair representation of the show, but not the best it has to offer...
