I don't think it's in character for Martha and Chloe to not give him some present. Chloe knows she doesn't have to spend money, but even if she did, she would have prepared for it a long time. And Martha is a state senator now, give him a movie pass or something.

Another cop-out to show Lois and a possible change of attitude to him. Either that or I'm just reading in to it too much.

No, I totally agree with you bluegayle.
I thought it was completely lame that they wrote Chloe not giving him a present. Yeah, she's a college student, but she also has a job, right? And, I agree with you that it was out of character for her and in character would have had her getting him something really special.
After all that she's been through with him this year, I hated that they gave her personality to Lois in this episode.
Okay, and to go to another subject discussed in this thread...I did enjoy the Superman colors on the cake :) Nice touch.
