Sad that this show has result to half naked/naked actors to sell the series, rather than actually writing good storylines.

You know I'm the last person to hate on female nudity, but when are we going to see some progression from Lois?? I mean damn, this show probably has 1 season left, I'd like to at least see her becoming more Lois than Chloe is right now, STARTING NOW. If not, then just let there be Chlois already.

Simple. She doesn't bring anything else meaningful to the plot, so they figure they might as well get some good ratings out of her ginormous silcone jugs.

I couldn't agree more. I was saying the same exact thing on another thread.
Either she's in the shower, exercising, "accidentally" flashing Clark, stripping, swimming, posing for FHM, etc. Anything that entails her not wearing clothes.

Damn straight! DAMN STRAIGHT!
i was JUST about to type that in. I personally got tired of watching Smallville last season and my girlfriend always cooing about how "gorgeous" Tom Welling is. This is how i get my turn, even tho we broke up - i can still watch Erica Durance. And i taped it too, lol. It's half and half, Clark took his clothes off last season (which was just queer to me cuz that was when i started watching the show) and now Lois is following suit. Can u say "even":)

Lois has big boobs. I'm a man. Then, by a simple equation, TPTB sent an half-naked Lois in the crowd.
I will of course not want to discover why Clark has pick up journalism as a futur career, nor will I want to see him realize he needs a disguise to fight crime and that maybe wearing glasses could throw people off when they start to think he is kind of special, I will not want him either to train his flying power, or to master any of his other leftover powers like microscopic vision, telescoping vision or super-breath, I would not like to learn more about Krypton or his alien heritage, I don't want him to outsmart Lex in some kind of way to put a stop to his suspicions once and for all and WITHOUT a memory wipe, I surely don't want to see him in a steady relationship with more love than angst, and I really really don't want to see him FINALLY accept his difference and who he is, thus helping people in more ways than just running around saving their lives, but also by being a symbol of morality, decency, truth and peace.
Lois have boobs. I'm a man. Then, I must want to touch, lick, feel and rub those Durance Trademark Boobs (or DTB, available in any store). I want an half-naked Lois and no storyline.
I'm a walking cliché.

It was Lois's turn for a bath. We've had Clark, Chloe, Lana, Lionel, and even Lois giving Sheby a bath, so now I guess it will be Martha or Lex(?).
I think it is a useless scene no matter who the character.
Chiriru

My guess?
(1) The shower scenes are filler for time.
(2) Erica Durance has gone on record that she'd rather be naked than have to convey an emotion. (Femme Fatals.)
(3) Frankly, because she showed that she's not as versitile an actress as AM, AoT, or KK. That's why all the time they have to resort to stripping her down.

Okay, without having read any of the other replies to this thread I'll say this: She's not naked enough nearly often enough for my tastes.
Sorry to say it, tho, but I would think that the future Superman would deserve a woman who hasn't been around the block so many times.

The reason EDLois is always naked or half naked is because the actress will do nude scenes and the writers take advantage of it. She's a stripper, she goes to open the door on an intruder naked are all examples of gratuitous nudity. If Kristin Kreuk and Allison Mack were cool with it, they'd show more skin, too, but they're not so their characters are more modest.

I'm sure plenty would disagree with you, and that's why they had a Chloe shower scene. But, again, KK and AM are more modest than ED so neither of them show as much skin.

You're right. I personally don't find Allison Mack that attractive. She's cute, but I don't find her hot, if you know what I mean. I find Kristin Kreuk to be cute and hot. And Erica Durance is hot. But you're right, Kristin Kreuk and Allison Mack are more modest, and although most guys may disagree with me, I do like that.

04-28-2006, 04:04 PM
But, what is surprising about Smallville is that nudity doesn't really help the ratings. On different boards, people will complain that they can't comfortably watch those episodes with younger siblings or older relatives. People would rather see more mythology content and PG stuff.

I agree with you 100 percent on that. The only thing that I can say is that it's because Smallville gets most of it's ratings within males 18-34, so that's probably why you see those shower scenes and the simone and alicia scenes. For the women who watch the show, they basically only get Tom Welling. They don't bring in the guys and exploit them like they do the girls.
ms.c.
04-28-2006, 04:09 PM
Yeah, but even within the young male demos, the gratuitous nudity isn't a ratings boon. The mythology eps are the ones that bring in big numbers in that demo, but they still only do those sparingly which I don't understand.
myankskent
04-28-2006, 04:14 PM
It makes no sense to me either. I guess Al/Miles get pleasure out of it because they are guys, I don't know. Smallville is like Lost, the mythology makes the show. If they get caught up in relationships and sex, it just makes the show go down, IMO. If you want relationships and sex, watch soap operas.

It's like in Relic, was it really worth it to see Welling and Kreuk make out for over a minute as JorEl and Louise? It's like they have to make every scene hotter than the next, even with the Lexana scene where Clark walked in.

I'm with ms.c and I know I've seen it on every board - if instead for a 5 minute shower, if we had say 5 minute sof Fine and Lex circling each other? This forum wouldn't of loaded at all last night.
I think the showers in this case (and with KK last year) are simply a way to fill time. A boring, boring, wasteful way to fill dead air.
MetroGirl06
04-28-2006, 05:56 PM
So Lois took a shower, is that not common among you ladies, LOL. Seriously people, ITS THE WB! Every show on that network has to have some kind of nudity! One Tree Hill, Charmed, you name it, it will have nudity! It was Lois's turn anyway....

Waste? Hell no it was the best use of water since the parting of the Red Sea. Hell Lana had one in Paris.
If this helps Smallville get greater ratings and get renued for next season then so be it. After all we didn't actually see anything just Erica's silhouette and head shot, You get that in an advert for shampoo.
It lead to a scene which could be the start of Clark's feelings towards Lois. Certainly no longer "big sister" phase.
Chiriru
04-28-2006, 07:11 PM
Certainly no longer "big sister" phase.
That wasn't the look of spontanious combustion on his face at all. I think they are keeping them in sibling territory - and thank god.
Waste?
Yes, pointless filler - AM's shower scene was quick. Long enough to get a peak but there for a reason - to set up the posession. A five minute glare at Erica durance as she shows off her stripper strut? It was as badly gratiuouts as Lana's shower in Crusade - which again pointlessly took up time in an epsidoe that had other better things to do and show people.
It's not what I watch SV for at all - that's to see Clark be a hero, and see Lex do evil bad things. It's a waste.
it will have nudity!
And that doesn't make it a good story or helpful to the over all plot in the least.
Apparently some people don't think Erica looks like a girl who ruined herself with plastic surgery - I get it, some people don't agree with that. I personally think the shower only accentuated her age over Allison and Kristin.
But claiming that it wasn't to fill time in the story? And to claim that it "helps" ratings when the biggest ones of the season have been those that feature other DC mythosy characters? That's just not true.

Actually it's psychological. He didn't look down and linger, he looked down and snapped his head back up -- he glanced at her which is our natural reaction; EDLois even quipped about it in her first episode on the show and berated herself -- and it's funny because *it's engrained* in our thinking patterns. And for all Clark is an alien, his emotions and logic are human based.
He didn't rub his eyes. The door didn't catch on fire. He gave her a look like "WHY did you open the door naked, weirdo?" Which is what made it funny; had he gone into obvious lust about it it wouldn't of been funny it would of been titilating.

That reminds me of Something's Gotta Give by Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton. Diane was walking around her room naked, and Jack just happened to stumble upon her being naked and all. And yeah, he did looked at her down and up...until Diane freaked him out with all her screaming.
I think Clark was surprised/shocked. But Jack Nicholson was shocked too...and HE ALSO found Diane attractive too.
So Chriru, I'm saying you are right. But that doesn't really prove that Clark is not attracted to her. It could be a mixture of shock and attraction, and WTF didn't you close the door, you weirdo kinda thing.

That? Is exactly his facial expression, IMO. Which was what was suppoed to make it funny.
Still doesn't make a shower scene make up for plot or acting skills though. Still would of rather seen Brainiac again before the finale.

I agree. But please answer me this as well: Why does Chloe show so much cleavage? It's offensive to me. And I'm not saying this just because she's not my favorite character. I really mean it. If it was one of my favorite characters, I would think the same way. How is what Chloe does too much better than what Lois does? It's unnecessary, imo.

I remember on another thread, you had the same concerns about Lois that Chiriru does.
I agree that Chloe's blouse's could be a little less revealing but I think Lois takes it to a new level.

I'm sure you realize this isn't the choice of the actors -- it's the producers and the wardrobe department. Same reason they keep taking Tom's shirt off.

Well actually, Kristin has refused to wear some of the things they have told her to, so I think the actors do have a say.

I think there's some choice in there somewhere. Kristin used a body double for one of her more revealing scenes and Kristin and Allison have not nearly had as many "revealing" scenes v's Lois.
i.e. Lois exercising, showering, answering the door nude, stripping, swimming in a itty bitty bikini, etc (all in 1 season).

I've read that Allison says she doesn't dress like Chloe, because she thinks women should dress in a "classy" way. KK may have more latitude to refuse because of her status on the show. Tom complains, too. But they keep taking his clothes off.

I understand what you're saying but I bet they have some latitude. Like Nomad said Erica likes to be naked (according to the FHM article).

When Chloe dresses in low cut, revealing blouses it's sexy and empowering. When Lois dresses in low cut, revealing blouses it's trashy and exploitative. ;) :p At least, that's what it seems like alot of people think.:p

Well, I think a lot of it has to do with exposed, where she did a whole scene as a stripper. That was over the top, but then again, it's all about that male 18-34 demographic.

Okay, I'm delurking for a bit to reply to this.
First of all, it's not about Chloe and "Lois" wearing lowcut tops. It's HOW they portray it. It's how they portray the scenes in general.
Chloe is typically in business suits with shirts under them that show cleavage. Yet, the camera doesn't SHOWCASE them or have the character focus in on them for the audience to pay attention specifically to them.
Take Spell for instance. Once "Lois" is possessed, the first thing she says is "Look at me! I'm gorgeous!" While feeling up her boobs and pushing them up.
In either Krypto or Lucy (I can't remember which), "Lois" comes down the stairs in a tight tank top and the camera zooms in on her boobs (and she's clearly nipping), while she's walking down.
Then in Aqua, we have her in an itty bitty bikini and the camera pans up her body making sure to linger in certain areas.
Of course we can't forget Exposed. I think that one speaks for itself.
And now we have Fade where she's doing crunches and her skin is glistening with sweat and the camera focuses on her boobs and abs. And then there's the shower scene.
Oh! And let us not forget the very first image campaign that they released for season 5 (that they immediately pulled apparently) where it featured ED longer than anyone else and the camera panned up her body for about 20 seconds or so while she felt herself up.
So yeah, you're right. But it's not in the way *WE* think. It's in the way TPTB are SHOWING US.
Chloe is classy. "Lois" is gratuitous and trashy.

I was going to say something like this^^^^, but ya' beat me too it!:lol::lol: But may I also add: Because SEX sells!
I canīt believe the doublestandard that's been going on on this thread! As much as I like the character of Chloe, she shows as much of her ' front side' as Lois does, if not more so! And yet no one is criticising Chloe, but they are all over Lois!
Get real people, the fact is that they are both equally revealing of their attributes, and should thus be treated equally as well! So if you are going to gang up on one of them, do it to the other as well, cos that's the only fair thing to do! Although to be perfectly honest I don't get why this topic was even brought up in the first place, it's irelevant! I mean, it's not like Lois is naked, or Chloe for that matter, so what if they showing somewhat more of their 'front side' , we all know that tv-shows have show people who had even less clothes on than that, in the past! And besides, as that old saying goes: 'you got it, you flaunt it!'

Well Chloe only shows cleavage, she's not exposing her stomach and legs like Durance is. Part of that is because Durance is in much better shape than Mack, but Durance doesn't seem to care about taking her clothes off. I, for one, hate Lois. I don't need to see her in a bra to decide that she should be on this show. She can go do her thing in a horror movie and show her body there.

because Erika Durance is attractive to men and they want to exploit her... punks

This debate is so silly. Why can't Erica show off her body? She has an awesome figure so it stands to reason that she would like it to be shown for all to see, more power to her I say.

I don't think we can assume that wardrobe is Erica's choice, any more than it's Tom's choice to wear that red jacket.

I think people overlook Chloe and her somewhat revealing wardrobe because the character is also highly developed and has more depth than EDLois. Not trying to sound mean, but Chloe is an interesting character regardless of what she is wearing. It seems as though EDLois' plot is often about what she is wearing... or not wearing. Does that make sense?

It does actually! I think because Chloe has so many levels to her character, people overlook the fact that she does dress revealing at times, even more so than Lois, and because Lois isnīt at the same level of character development as Chloe is, she is judged a lot harsher for the same crime, which isnīt fair!

I have my problems with Chloe's character this year, but I will say this, Allison Mack is a much better actress than Durance. I think Durance is the weakest actor on the show, and I say "actor" because "actress" would mean that she is the weakest of the girls but stronger than one of the guys. I don't see that to be the case, but that is my opinion.

What I don't understand is iif you are all against sex in TV, Why is there no outcry for half nude Clark? I swear if he doesn't have his shirt off at least in one scene every other episode, I must not be watching the same show you are. And to all you that said Smallville is aimed at a male audience, there is much more male skin than female skin.
