is it me or did lex seem thrilled to have clark back working side by side again? almost looked like he was begging clark to get back to the way things were between them

well.... didn't he ACTUALLY asked Clark if they could work something out?

But with his reaction by the end of the episode, I think he doesn't want to have a relationship with Clark, he wants to know Clark's true colors...

TW and MR still have *it* in their scenes together.

It was actually a little sad to see Lex show that little bit of longing for their lost friendship. I don't believe his olive branch was sincere, and Clark reacted to it exactly as he should've. But its still a bit sad to see whats been broken, and can never be fixed.

Lex did seem pleased, when saying to "work something out to common ground"!

Then I thought of Lana as the common ground.....Clark does not want Lana near Lex as we will discover.

But it would make a juicy piece of drama to see Clark and Lana and Chloe to discover that it was Lex who orchestrated the Clana split by injecting Simone to get to Lana!!

Is Lex that stupid to ask Clark for common ground in being friends again, knowing he split those two up.....not withstanding Clark wanted make a clean break from Lana without causing anymore angst to her with secrets and death!!

Clark and Lex's relationship has always been the thing that keeps me watching. It was made me tune in for the Pilot all those years back. However, it is starting to get to the point know where the writers have to realize that it is time to start living with the decisions they made. It doesn't do the show any good to constantly keep going back and forth with it. One week, Clark and Lex want nothing to do with one another. The next they are trying to find common ground and defending each other to people. It just comes off making Clark and Lex look naive and stupid overall.

I just want the friendship to be over, and for their real personas to keep them apart from one another. I hope in the end it is based on the fact that one is a hero and the other is a villain, and not based on "Hey you stole my girlfriend".

I know, even if it wasn't sincere (and at this point I would be really shocked if it was) it was still a bit sad to see Lex wanting to be friends with Clark again. And I'll say this, one thing that I'm glad that they've done in this episode is showcase how Lex's obsession and jealousy of Clark is at the root of everything, and not Lana. I'm pretty much convinced that Lex is only after Lana because of Clark. If he can't have Clark's friendship or his perfect family then he'll settle for his ex-girlfriend.

I agree with you Ryan!
As for the Clex, I squeed with joy when Lex said he wanted to patch things up. To me he sounded like a lost little boy asking "can we pwease be fwiends again, Clarkie?". Then he has to ruin it by taking a call from that....that.....girl. *grrr*
But I noticed that Clark didn't make a reply to Lex's overture. He looked sceptical but I didn't hear him say anything since the phone rang. So In my little Clexy fantasy he says "sure, lex, I've missed you. Let's be friends again." or something like that.
*sigh* I know, I know, only in my head. Only in my head.
I also loved that Lex is still totally obsessed with Clark. :D Even if it is only finding out his secret.

Lex definitely seems to have more stock in their crumbling friendship (if you can even call it that) than Clark.

I really liked this statement and hope TPTB pay attention. If you make the whole Lex and Supes interaction over something petty you will lose the whole urgency and it will be unimportant and unneccessary. Stick with the fact that lex feels abandoned by his own father who seems to have developed this love for clark. We all know that with Lionel's previous obsession with all things otherworldly he would try to be important in the life of the one that came from another world. That has to be what chaps lex's ass. That no matter what he could do he just isn't good enough or interesting enough to keep his own fathers attention. Yet Clark does, and lex can sense that Lionel knows something more than he does. I can see how that would knaw at someone like lex. Hopefully the Lana thing will only be a little thing that is deadened by quality time with Lois.

I think Lex was truly sincere and heartfelt deep down when he said, "maybe we can find some common ground." HOWEVER, with the Lex we've been seeing, there's undoubtly some ulterior motive, like getting closer to Clark to find out his secret. But I think that Lex really does miss Clark's friendship. It was apparent in the way he was acting when they were together trying to save Martha and Lionel. When Lex said, "You going to wait for the cops" and Clark replied, "No," Lex said, "Neither was I," and kicked the door down. The way he delivered the line and the way he kicked the door....it's kind of hard to explain, but it just seemed like he was excited and happy to be Clark's partner again. Also when he said, "It's sad isn't it? That it takes a crisis like this to put us in the same room togehter?" I really think he meant that. Clark has always been the one good thing in Lex's life, so even if Lex is teetering towards evil, he'll still miss that one good part of him, Clark, and want to regain it.

It reminds me of "The Prince of Egypt" when two brothers, Ramasese and Moses, are fighting, becoming mortal enemies, Moses saying, "Let my people go," and Ramasese refusing. There's one scene that reminded me of that scene with Lex and Clark. It's where Ramasese is sitting alone in the dark, and Moses comes to talk to him, saying, "We could always talk here" and Ramsese says, "Why can't things be the way they were before?" It's that same feeling as when Lex said, "Maybe we can find some common ground," that sad feeling, because you know the fates of the characters, and you know it won't happen in the end, but you keep hoping for it deep down too.

Writers, directors, and actors of SMALLVILLE, you have created something great with the Clark and Lex friendship/enmity. Please continue to show it more and more, and please show that Clark has some remorse for not sharing his secret with Lex and for being somewhat repsonsible for turning Lex this way. I really would like to see Clark still care about Lex and to see that he misses the friendship deep down too.

That is a good observation!

Didn't Lex say to Clark last season in that loft scene where Clark told Lex he wanted him to change for the better and Lex said:

"I don't know if I can, I feel its that darkside just looming over the horizon. But your friendship keeps it at bay. Don't give up on me yet Clark!"

Lex is a complex character I believe struggling with his emerging darkside and his own "humanity".

Yea when Lex said that to Clark and then Lana appeared on his caller ID i thought yea GOOD LUCK with finding some common ground on THAT one!!

I'm so suspicious and cynical about Lex, I think he's always wanted to be close to Clark just to figure out what's up with him -- to figure out the secret. Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer -- that's what he said in Rogue.

But it's true -- TW and MR have the best chemistry on the show. Or is it JG and MR...? It's close.

Ooooooohhh!

Maybe Lex has a two pronged plan to gratify his "Lana Lust" AND just to get close to SuperClark after all.... :p

Diabolically Elegant!!:p

TW and MR do! I mean, don't get me wrong, JG and MR have great chemistry but TW and MR have the best. In those few minutes when they were on the screen together it felt like the show came alive again.
Darn I wish there were more Clexy scenes on this show (and not just to satisfy my hormones--although that would be nice too!).

I thought it was a little sad that Lex asked if they can find "common ground." It seems that every season, Lex always seems to be asking Clark to be his friend again.

Maybe Lex wasn't entirely sincere, but I'm pretty sure a part of Lex does still want to be friends with Clark. They showed that in "Lexmas," and then Lex says it again in "Lockdown" when he tells Lana about his Christmas dream. He says "Clark and I were friends again."

sari chem, I totally agree. Lex does want to be Clark's friend again. He misses that one good part in his life. Lana is good too, of course, but Clark has always been the representation of the man Lex wishes he could be. I think if Clark would befriend Lex again, Lex probably wouldn't turn into the super-villain we know he will be.

No. Their friendship is destoyed. Impossible after all that happened. No, you cant trust Lex.

Allthou... Seri Chem made me wonder...

But not to forget, Lex thought Clark was human at that point.

I agree with you, LuthorRequiem2 and aqua, Lex has always put more stock in their friendship than Clark. Has anyone even once noticed the slightest hint of regret from Clark about their lost friendship? If it had really ever meant anything to Clark, he would miss it too, even if he knows they can never go back. I have lost friendships, but despite sometimes bitter ends, I still remember and miss the good times. Clark doesn’t seem to care in the least. And yes, of course Lex wants to know Clark’s secret. Who wouldn’t? With all the funky things that happen with and around this guy, if I were in Lex’s shoes I’d probably investigate Clark too. (As did Chloe to a certain degree, if you recall.) Investigating in and of itself is not a crime…only certain methods you may employ. And I admit Lex has sometimes crossed the line. That is wrong, but the motive was not.

But on a more personal level, Lex does miss what he had with Clark. He did confide in Clark things he never talked about with anyone else in his life. That’s all he wanted in return from Clark. And Clark could/would not reciprocate.

As for his blossoming relationship with Lana…Lex and Lana have always shared a close friendship ever since the first season. In many ways I think Lana can understand Lex better than Clark ever could. I believe Lex does really care for Lana (remember ‘Lexmas’) but I will admit there may be a bit of revenge factor there as well, whether consciously or unconsciously on Lex’s part. The truth is, LEX DID NOT BREAK UP CLARK AND LANA. They were already well on their way to splitsville before Lex’s machinations due to Clark’s inability to be honest with Lana. Whether Lex was in the picture or not, they still would have broken up. Face it, Clana is not meant to be any more than Lexana is.

I also don’t believe that Lex’s relationship with Lana would be a hindrance to a rekindled friendship with Clark in Lex’s mind because, again if you recall ‘Lexmas’, he had both relationships. Clark didn’t seem to have a problem with Lex and Lana’s relationship his dream/vision. Also, I don’t see Lex as wanting money and power more than love and friendship. He just views the former as the only way to ensure and secure the latter.

I just hope Lana isn’t just using Lex to get back at Clark. Although I’m not a big Lana fan, that would be a cruelty unbefitting of her character

I think Clark feels so utterly betrayed, that he's still angry. I also think that when you have a close friend that proves to be untrustworthy, you really have to watch your step not to be drawn back into that friendship and betrayed again -- especially when the friendship was important to you. I don't think it's that Clark doesn't care. I just think he's very careful around Lex not to open that door again.
