First of all... Man that guy had a messed up grill...

okay... I think that it's still plausible that Lionel hired him to prove that Clark was the kid who was creating all the miracles around smallville... His son tried it... why not him.

mmmm you may be reaching with that one, although when CK accused lionel of knowing that the gun was loaded with blanks he did have his usual smug smile!!!

I think he knew that gun wasn't loaded, he was clutching that sucker so close! He could tell somehow! I know it!

If it was because he hired that guy or not, I don't know. I am going to say probably not.

I think he knew the gun wasn't loaded, but didn't plan the whole thing either. I think he is too smart not to know it wasn't loaded.

I see your points... Thanks for the extra insight

I think this is reaching for a conspracy. If anybody paid the guy i think it would be Lex he is the only one that would have had anything to gain from this. I don't think that is what happened here though. As for Lionel there is no way he would put himself in that kind of danger to prove that which he already knows. There is nothing for him to gain. IMO

I also don't think that he knew the gun was loaded and I hope that is the case. Either way I doubt that we will ever know for sure

I don't think he hired the guy, but I think he somehow knew that the gun wasn't loaded.

Lionel did not hire him. There is no possible way. He put himself in danger with the train and could have died in the fire room, without anybody even seeing it, so what would be the point.

It was all a conspiracy to get Martha into bed. :)

I think the gun was a 92 Beretta. They have a gauge on the side that tells you if it's loaded or not. Notice how Lionel inspected it first.

I don't know!! I can never tell whether Lionel's being good or bad! You never know. In season 4 when he was all nice after jail, now he's getting WAY TOO CLOSE to Martha! Who knows? But think, why would he put himself through all that pain (buckets, fire)? Maybe he's just crazy like that.

Lionel does not brush his teeth without a back up plan and simultaneously backstabbing a corporation. I find it hard to believe gap tooth could get the drop on the Magnificent Bastard.

I disagree...
If Lionel had hired the guy to do this, why would the guy THEN have gone to a bar and been gleefully drinking to lionel's death?

not to mention the guy totally losing it when he discovered that Lionel had not died
none of that would make any sense had he been hired by Lionel

if the guy was 'hired' by anyone, (which I find doubtful) I would be inclined to think it was Lex

there's just no way that lionel hired that guy...
the elevator thing was crashing down, how would he know oh-so well that he was gonna be safe if he hired the guy (to test clark for example).. that's impossible.

And the two earlier "tasks" put him in so much danger and it's not like he'd get something out of that... so, no way was it him

mellowyellow is right. Lionel did not hire the guy. For the reasons mellowyellow gave. Also, remember what Lex told Lionel about what the guy did, when he learned Lionel was alive?

I tend to think Lionel did not know the gun was empty, too. Though if he did, it was only by checking the gun itself.

It is possible with Lionel's game playing that it could have been an elaborate plan to get Martha's defenses down by showing her the "false" caring side of Lionel by involving her to that extent.

But I doubt it that the Freight train/limo incident and the ensuing questioning of Lex if he had involvement leaves that door closed as hiring "Gap tooth"/Lincoln Cole.;)
