Call me crazy people...

How did Lionel know to curb his words when he was in the elevator! How did he know to say "special" instead of anything else? That seems a little odd to me... let me know if anyone else was kinda thrown off by that

i thought that he didn't want martha to know that he knew everything about clark. maybe just hinting it so she would figure it out for herself.

I noticed that, too. It did seem a little odd. I wonder if it was Jor-El at work on that one.

Well he probably figured that the masked guy (forgot his name already) was watching/listening and didn't want him to find out and spread the word.

Perhaps it was another "set up" situation. Like how it was Clark noted "What if you knew the gun wasn't loaded" type deal. Very many questions surrounding that man....Very many..

I think it was a combination of not wanting Martha to know and he didn't want that guy to hear it either. For some reason, Lionel is content on keeping Clark's secret. Why is another question that needs to be answered, probably in the finale.

I took it to mean the same...He figured out the guy was watching him all along so he wanted to let Martha know he knew but didn't want others to know what he and Chloe now know. You know?

What other words could have he really used? Special seems appropriate/normal to my ears.

The way they're always calling Clark a 'very special boy' always sounds to me like they're calling him mentally challenged :p

Also in "Transference" when Clark was in Lionel's body that's how he proved to Martha that it was him... when he said "You said I was your special boy"

The thing is, what he said was all perfectly correct. And very much in keeping with the way Lionel speaks, and how I would imagine him presenting his knowledge to Martha. I really thought it fit perfectly, and had the added effect of being enticing to Lex.
