So let's have a count of what might be carried over to future episodes:
- the exchange between Lex and Lana
- Martha & Lionel's different relationship
- Lionel really knowing Clark's secret
...
Kind of a filler episode, eh?

Better than most in total.
Lionel isn't big enough for Clark to take on. He needs like a whole country to open up a can on.
So is Lionel writing something to Martha at the end? Or maybe Lex?

Ladies and gentlemen, we have continuity in this episode that spans all the way from season 4, YES the season 4 finale.
The part I speak of is when Lionel says he's known CK's secret since he was made comatose by the Transferance stone.
Heres to hoping for more continuity! Cheers.

Yeah it's nice to see a long-going storyline brought back to be the main focus.

Woohoo!! I loved that part! It's so nice to have that "how long has he known" mystery solved.

Yeah, and now we get more questions that follow it like the ending. Brilliant episode. This is what Smallville should be about. Not a soap opera with the ships.

I can't wait to see this episode now. One of my biggest pet peeves with the show has always been its lack of continuity. It seems like this season is showing improvement in that area.

YES! SO glad to see the Apex deal was not thrown away and that they used it and kept continuity with it. That was one of the most intriguing plot lines in "Vengeance" and I was afraid they'd never mention it again. Now they just need to mention whether or not Lionel killed off that girl's mother from "Vengeance" or if he really wasn't behind it, because if he WAS, then he's evil...if he wasn't, then maybe he's not.

I am still pissed off about Level 33.1, but each bit of continuity thet give us, is slowly getting rid of my anger over that one. It would have been so awesome to have Lucas come back to help Lex run it. That would have been my ideal storyline. My favorite guest character was Lucas, and I hate the way they never mentioned him again or brought him back. Level 33.1 would have been the perfect opportunity.

Hasn't it been great? The amount of storylines that have been running through the course of the season seem like they are going to be tied together nicely. Last year, we had the Isabelle/Teague/Football/stones arc- but that was it really!
This season doesn't seem to have had many stand alone episodes- with a few exceptions- and they seem to move the plot along one way or another. Well done!

Well the big thing is that there are storylines that are not being dropped, they are being followed through. Brainiac, Lionel, Zod...these are the big storylines of season 5 and they all demonstrate continuity.
