It's similar to saw.. W/ the "I want to play a game" and the guy in a mask behind a screen.. But, he's not stuck in some vault, and so far hasn't had to do anything incredibly weird like get a key out from behind his eye or something stupid to survive..

But I like how it's going.. I mean, this guy could of so-called in the show seen the movie "Saw" and wanted to be a copy-cat of it and follow it along in some sort..

I'm more curious about the Lionel knows Clarks secret ordeal...
I want to see how that fans out..

I was just about to post the same thing - What the hell?!

Are the writers that desperate for ways to provide filler and (hopefully) move the story along at the same time that they'd do a totol rip-off like that?

Ugh!

And from the previews where Lionel is being held against his will, it looks like it'll be alot like Saw. (But perhaps with less gore or creative torture devices)

Some of you people like to argue/complain about some of the most weird things..

Even in Movies, and other TV Shows, you'll see references of something from a movie, maybe even done almost exactly the same.. Like this, but the point is.. Like I previously posted, maybe the guy in the mask, per say saw the movie, and that's what the writer's want us to think for ex:, or maybe the writer's like the concept of saw, but wanted to fix it up and make it the way they wanted cuz they liked the ideas..
many possibilities....

I was thinking it's Dr. Fine also.

But as for borrowing ideas from Saw and going another way, I dont mind that. We do that all the time with fan fic of Smallville. What I do mind is when they try to reproduce the (almost same) story of Saw on Smallville.

That's the feeling I'm getting so far with 30 minutes done.

SAW I & II were both entertaining flicks.

And Sville has ripped off or "made an homage" as DeKnight would say, many other flicks i.e. T2, House of Wax and on and on

For all the people who think it's a rip-off...
Than you guys must also think movies like..
"Date Movie" "Not another Teen Movie" and the Scary Movies, 1,2,3, & 4 are all rip-offs too..
and in my opinion, they were all good movies..

The movies you quoted were spoofs. They were made to make fun of those movies.

This episode was 100% rip off from Saw. I mean the mask, the "game"...etc I swear the writers took some lines out of the movies.

I think its sad that the writers cannot be more creative. Oh well..

My brother was watching some of it with me, and when he saw the part with the word puzzle, he just cracked up laughing. He said, "It's like Saw for third graders!" I agree, but it was still a great episode. That ending is gonna drive me nuts all week!

Okay, but some of you may of picked up on recent episodes and some of the rip-off material you may see, but at the same time notice something that goes hand in hand w/ it..
For ex: the 100th Episode, where Clark goes back in time to try and save Lana, they were airing Final Destination 3 commercials, and now this episdoe, they were airing Scary Movie 4 episodes and they introduced a Saw-like storyline which was one of the main parts of Scary movie 4.. It's quite interesting how they line up the commercials to the tv-shows..
Now I know there was other instances where they had commercials that kind of went w/ that particular episode but I can't remember..
Yet you people are more so complaining thinking it's a rip-off, when they are maybe trying to kill 2 birds with one stone, 1) have a story line, and 2) help advertise a movie that is coming into the commercials that are probably paying for their slot in the commercials....
Soo, conclusion: Prolly not the last "so-called" rip-off we'll see, and that you can't necessarily call it a rip-off...
p.s., remember when Lois had just purchased the Ford Fusion, they had Ford Commercials in it + extra promotions of the Ford Fusion... Smart Marketing I think..

Or.. you could consider that it's just a promotion of Scary Movie 4, just like how it seemed the back-in-time Clark episode for Final Destination 3, and also the Episode, Lois gets a new car.. Ford Fusion and it's promoted as well.. maybe it all goes hand in hand, advertising makes $$$, someone has to make the bills.. :)

As much as I disliked the idea of ripping off of the movie "Saw" I did end up liking the episode. However, I don't know what you people are doing in just realizing that the writers of this show are completely unoriginal and quite frankly....suck. here are numerous examples of "rip-offs" before this episode.....

1. 3-13 Velocity- heralded as the Fast and the Furious with kryptonite episdoe

2. 3-14 Obsession- came to be known as the Swimfan knock off

3. 4-2 Gone- the bad guy Lionel has in his back pocket sure reminded me of the evil terminator in terminator II. even the way he's killed is reminiscent of one of the greatest sequels of all time.

4. 4-6 Transferrence- how many times has this been done? maybe every decade since film came to be (although it was excellent)

5. 4-8 Spell- i didn't know they played 2 crappy episodes of the WB's Charmed in one week....

6. 4-15 Sacred- did we really need Crouching Tiger Hidden Lana?

7. 4-17 Onyx- "alexander" becomes the man behind the iron mask

8. 4-18 Spirit- anyone seen Fallen?

9. 5-5 Thirst- Terrible episode, buffy, blade, so many others.....

10. 5-9 Lexmas- It's a Wonderful Life in Smallville

11. 5-13 Vengeance- Sure reminded me of a female Batman

12. 5-17 Void- totally Flatliners with kryptonite

13. 5-19 Mercy- SAW, SAW, SAW

so as you can see, and i don't know if there's another post on this, but this is nothing new in smallville. every writer should be fired, and replaced with new blood. even though i got sick of the FOTW thing of season one, at least i thought most of it was original.......

i know i missed more, you can add whatever you'd like to my list

I've never seen Saw, so I didn't pick up on the similarities, but the episode did remind me a bit of Nip/Tuck. Masked face, distorted voice, injection for the victim....I didn't mind the similarites, and didn't think of it as a rip, but I couldn't help but think of the Carver. Regardless, this was an excellent episode. If it takes a little "borrowing" (not stealing, just creative inspiration) to create such greatness, I'm all for it!

They got the Saw movies and said "ok, let's replace all those people with our Smallvile cast."

ClanaByNature
04-21-2006, 05:20 AM
To those who haven't seen saw they didn't just rip a few minor things from it, they took the whole concept of the movie. The killer in saw did the same exact thigns with the tv screens, masks, voices and said "would you like to play a game..." he seemed to know everything about them and a quote from smallville I almost gaurentee the killer said "you dont know me, but I definitly know you." The killer did it to the people because they were treating others badly or taking their life for granted. Also the games mimiced the bad things the person did to people in real life, and the monologues before each killing was the exact same format as the saw killings.

Actually, I have to disagree with the female batman comment on Vengeance. Andrea Rojos is an actual character in the DC Universe, known in her crime fighting guise as "Acrata", the name of her mother's rebel group.

I can't stand how they have to do these rip-offs. I was watching Insurgence last night and it got that nostalgic feel of those old episodes where they didn't have to rip off anything. Most of this season hasn't been rip-offs, but lately we have otherwise good episodes (Void, Mercy) that ripped off movies. They could have changed things around to avoid this. I never saw Saw or Flatliners but did see Saw commercials so I know how similar Mercy was to it. I can't comment on Void, but I really did like that episode.

I'm not sure, but maybe they're trying to reach out to the fans of those movies. I just hope they're not alienating their faithful viewers.

Well television and movies are all about imitation. There are only so many good original ideas out there, and apparently it seems like writers are finally running out of good ideas. They're turning to video games now for God's sake (Doom, Vice City, Silent HIll).

Steve DeKnight, the writer of Mercy, posted this on his thread right here on K-Site 2 days ago (yes, he is a new member, like us, of K-Site).

"Some of you have accused us of ripping off Saw. I prefer to think of it as an homage – ah, forget it. You know the score. Actually we were planning on homage-ing Cube too, but couldn’t build a new set because of Fragile. The young actress could only work a limited amount of hours, so they had to bounce around the other sets more than usual to accommodate her. Because of this, we never had enough time one stage to build our Mercy set before we started shooting. Instead we reused the safe room set from Lockdown, then went to an actual location for the other stuff."

smallville has had episodes with plots simular to movies and other shows but that is the business once one idea comes out many people try to use it and every time its effects are different some are good and some are bad. I thought the episode was pretty good never saw the saw movies but know of them and yes it was simular to the movies concept but was different.

I'm not talking about the stop & go story line, or out-of-left-field plots, I'm talking about a complete lack of originality. I wasn't too impressed with Smallville writers before this week, but after seeing Saw 3 in place of what should have been smallville I am about as eager to see what happens for the rest of the season as I am to find out if Smallville gets their asses sued. Most blatent and obvious rip off of a movie I've ever seen in my life.

My bad, I just saw that there was already a topic about this. I did skim over the list to see if there was but I missed it the first time.

I think everyone defending the similarities to the movie SAW are completely missing the point. YES, some previous episodes of smallville have had passing resemblances or even homages to movies, but never has an episode stolen the plot/imagery/dialogue as BLATANTLY as this episode. And because they really made no clear reference to saw outright, its truly plagiarism. I really hope they get sued over this because that is rediculous. For anyone who hasn't seen the movie Saw, this episode of smallville was as someone previously mentioned, the exact same movie with a different cast.

I just dont understand, with a character as deep as superman how can you have trouble coming up with stories... why resort to this kind of garbage.

I agree 100%. I made a seperate post almost identical to this. Haha... I don't think it would harm Smallville in the slightest to get rid of it's writers and find new ones. I'm fairly convinced I could step in and do a better job not only creating a flowing story line, consistant plot, and balanced character development, but also maintaining some originality in the process.

Some one had a good point... A lot of good ideas are altered versions from a previus idea.. For ex: the 100th episode could kind of go hand in hand w/ Final Destination, cept they altered that he actually lived thru that, yet went back in time.. etc. etc., think of movies too.. they use past movies as well, for ex: The Longest Yard was a re-write... from a previous one, The lated Herby movie goes along some sorts and ideas of previous Herbie movies, etc. etc.
those are just examples..
I don't see why the thought of it being a rip-off is a justifiable reason to hate the show.. it was a good episode, I liked when Clark saved both Martha & Lionel, and Lionel saw what Clark could do, making it more intersting to see what happens in the next few episodes...

not to be completely naive but wasnt the joker and the riddler off of batman doing weird stuff like this way before Saw even came out?! I mean DC poularized torture games from an evil villian in comic books. Tons of them are in teen titans and batman. If anything, saw is a rip-off of the joker!

Iowa_Gent

Isn't just about all shows and movies spin offs or different versions of older movies and shows. Saw wasn't the first show that had have someone does things to prevent something. Die Hard With a Vengeance had Bruce Willis and Samuel L Jackson solving puzzles to stop bombs. I am sure if you look at other movies you will find one even closer to the movie Saw.

Actually this is a good reason to hate any show. It demonstrates an utter lack of respect as well as contempt for it's viewers. What it says to me is you aren't worth me wasting my own ideas on you when I can just steal them from someone else.

I think Flatliners was on the same night as Void - I remember watching it shortly after. Also, wasn't Forever much like House of Wax, which was being advertised at the same time? This episode was like Saw, and I knew it would be going into it from the previews. The scene with Lionel in the room of fire with the monitor watching how the previous "gamer" met his demise, the burned corpse..the game. The means and the outcome. In Saw 1 Amanda beat the game just like (well ok sans Clark!) Mionel did. But it didn't bother me, I still loved this episode, muchly! It resolved alot of questions, great acting all around, and nice cliff hanger at the end.

RobLando
04-21-2006, 07:15 PM
haha, again, missing the point. This episode of Smallville wasnt LIKE saw... it WAS saw.

And to reply to the comment that the joker and riddler in DC comics used to do this sort of thing long before SAW, yes.. im sure the idea of homicidal games is nothing new, but Saw took that IDEA and made a movie about it, Smallville didnt take an IDEA from saw, it just re-made a one hour version of it with different actors. if you havn't seen the movie Saw, go watch it and you'll see how rediculously alike this episode is to it.

Anyone paying respect to the writers of this episode either havn't seen the movie Saw, or are completely oblivious to what writers do. I'll agree that some of the acting was great, and you dont give writers props for coming up with the idea of having clark kent catch an elevator, he's superman, THATS WHAT HE DOES. Coming up with stuff like that should be simple for these writers. Coming up with the surrounding plot, such as WHY he had to catch the elevator is what they should be focussing on. Thats what a good writer would do.

The WORST part of this whole episode was definitely that the guy behind the mask was a nobody. So they didnt even use the stolen plot to further an original smallville plotline... it was empty, completely hollow and pointless. The events of this episode will never be mentioned again in further episodes, its just a one week event. Stolen for no good reason other than the writers probably liked Saw and hoped to cash in on it.

My goodness, so everyone noticed an obvious nod to a very popular film series. I'm not trying to defend the writters or anything, but do you know how difficult it is to come up with 22 NEW FRESH IDEAS for each and every season? There are only a few MAIN BASIC storyline catagories that almost every movie can fall into. The films that Smallville "borrows" from are proven films that are popular among the targeted audience.

Sure, I noticed the SAW referance, but it didn't make me get all ticked off at the writters, in fact, since I enjoyed SAW so much, I was happy to see such a COOL nod to this film series. I thought they did a FANTASTIC job, and it was a nice dark twist to our typical Smallville story-lines, and a GREAT threat to our favorite characters. Watching Lionel defend Martha was AWESOME.

Watching Clark use his powers to save Martha while Lionel looks on was a VERY importance scene. And that whole conversation between Clark and Lionel was nail-biting. While there were somne cool SAW referances to this episode, there was enough differances with the right SMALLVILLE "touch" that set it apart from SAW and it stood completely on it's own.

MERCY will be one of my favorite episodes, one for me to mark down in my list of favorite "dark" episodes.

Well gee isn't that what they're paid to do? Come up with ideas? If it's so hard for an entire team of writers to come up with stories to tell maybe they shouldn't be in this business. Maybe the executive producers should step down if it's so hard.

What is this supposed to prove that stealing is alright as long as it's a popular film or tv show?

Maybe you need to catch up on a few facts here. The writer for this episode, Steve Deknight has even openly admitted to ripping off Saw. Fans really need to touch base with reality. Praise the episode if you want but let's not delude ourselves into thinking it's anything but stolen ideas lifted directly from "Saw"

for god sakes people they did not just BORROW or NOD to anything so stop saying it! I love the show as a whole and didnt mind the episode, but I do think that writers could come up with a original storyline that would actualyl further the plot instead of what they did this week.

Since they cut the budget, I guess they had no choice but to make a tinfoil mask for the guy.

They did further the plot a little by confirming that Lionel knows Clark's secret. I am pretty dissapointed with this season allthough there were a few GREAT episodes. I just hope the finish the season with a bang. I heard on the space network that this was the final season. Does anyone know if this is true?

Thanks

I think it's pretty evident from S. DeKnight's reply that this is just a ripoff of Saw and I think like other episodes mentioned in this thread, I think the damn network dictates what they want in the episode (i.e. to tie in with other WB movies/tv)

Umm, Steve DeKnight, who wrote the episode, admitted that it was an 'homage' to the episode, so yeah, they did 'borrow' or 'nod' to it.

I think the movie references are kind of common. has anyone mentioned the glass scene in Fragile that was a lot like a scene in The Fog? Interesting, that was the ep that Tom directed!

Than you guys must also think movies like..
"Date Movie" "Not another Teen Movie" and the Scary Movies, 1,2,3, & 4 are all rip-offs too..
and in my opinion, they were all good movies..

Well all of them movies are parody's of the originals. They are supossed to copy the originals. Though I like the Scary Movies better because even though they copy the original movies they use original ides and characters and the story lines with the comdey are better to me.

So heres a scenario stephen kings next book is going to feature a boy crash landing on this planet from a meteor, a farm family adopts him (except they have a full family). They find he has strange powers of strength, fire breath, ice vision, and he only wore yellow and black all the time, and eventually went out to save the world in yellow tights and a black shirt with a letter on his chest after his mother died of a heart attack. You are telling me you wouldn't consider this a blatant rip off as long as when interviewed he said "yeahhh its only a homage to superman... " and he included like a few pages where his reoccuring characters showed up to say random lines?

Like I said before it's my favorite show, and I'd jsut rather a story line with fine in it or something random other than a mostly pointless ripoff of saw filler episode.

Aldo interesting is that n Fog there was more blood than in Fog. I laugh every time I watch Fog because the deaths are so violent but there is no blood

i saw scary movie 4 last night and the opening scene was so much like smallville on thursday that i could almost anticipate what the masked psychopath was going to say. i've never seen Saw before but my friends told me it was saw that they were parodying in SM4 so i put 2 and 2 together and realized smallville was "borrowing" from Saw. i'm not sure what to think of that though. i like it better when smallville is completely original...

ok i dont think anyone trully denies that this episode is highly influenced by the movie Saw...nothing to defend here and nothing to disagree with. If Saw never came out, this episode would have never existed ...period

me: whos feels like they wasted an hour watching this?...cuz i dont, and who cares that the writers stole some stuff to make an episode that was still meaningful in this season's arc?...cuz i dont feel that way either....good day

I think you guys are missing the point of what the writers are doing. They know how to appeal to their audience, it's a key part of how to target your demographic. Hit them with something they are familiar with as a positive experience.

People who enjoyed Saw could see this and immediately have the reference to a cool movie they saw and equate this episode with that experience. Just like when Supernatural's bloody mary borrowed from the ring. It's a way to make viewers say "cool, this is like Saw!" which they enjoyed, so they sit back and see how it unfolds.

That's just how pop culture works, in music, movies, whatever. One formula sparks interest and gains a following and many others come along and cater to the genre with a similar formula.

I haven't seen Saw but i know of it and the first thing i thought was "oh this is so Saw". I'm fully aware that films influence films, but in the best cases of this, the new film would take an older film and then step it up a notch. I found it a bit annoying because there's been quite a few film rip-offs in this series and i love smallville but it's Superman and i think it should be setting trends and not following them. I did enjoy it though and was a great chance to see something happen within the story that isn't just "another kryptonite superperson" x

That's an amusing spin on this situation.
So the writers are attempting to give us quality entertainment by ripping off popular films and tv shows.

Try to think of the guy in the episode as a copy cat of types and that will help you out slightly...

I mean granted it is kind of lame that they ripped off something else for the episode but all in all it was entertaining so I am willing to look past it

How old is the average age of people who watch smallville? Isn't Saw an 18? Always thought there'd be people who aren't old enough for that rating so wouldn't have watched Saw. Same with Scary Movie being a 15, some people haven't seen the films! I saw Saw last night! x

Lmao, I cant believe the writers actually had the cojones to do that.

Seriously, the writers, or should I say more creative writers, could have put across the same themes in their own unique style. This wasn't a homage and it shouldn't be praised because people look at it and say 'Wow this is just like saw that is so kewl and awesome!!!'

This episode was just ludicrous which is a complete shame, because it had alot of positive elements.
