The way he stopped it would have still killed Lionel and Martha. It's too bad they couldn't have found a way for him to slow it down first.

he should have flown and slowed it >_> the way he cought it would have been the same as if it hit the springs on the ground.

It was cool theres alot of false things in the show that cant be done in real life....like the computer hacking which clark wouldnt have even been there

Yah, exactly. I guess we're suppose to assume Clark gave a little when he caught it, like when you catch an egg, and absorbed some of the fall. But it still looked like 20 floors or more, which would kill on impact.

04-20-2006, 06:52 PM
Or jumping, catching the elevator, and then bracing his feet against the wall as the elevator slowly came down above him.

Rosey
04-20-2006, 06:53 PM
Yeah, that was still quite a sudden stop of the elevator. Should have been some jumping/flying involved.

What is the difference between hitting the floor and hitting Clark's catch? They are both freefalls to a dead stop. Martha and Lionel should be shreaded cheese. Oh well, cool to see :P

Guess i took too long to construct my other thread, this one wasn't there when i started writing...thanks for moving.

They wanted Clark to catch it to make the drama of him and Lionel coming face to face and it WORKED!!!

04-20-2006, 07:05 PM
Agreed. They wanted Clark and Lionel face to face, plus have it look cool. Who cares if it doesnt work in the real world? lol

You know what. Who cares if they didn't die. This show is a fantasy. Quit complaining about every little thing otherwise you will never enjoy this show at all.

OMG that was the best scene ever! That was the first time I really think that Tom's acting made me think..Superman without him speaking. It was all in the look he gave Lionel when he stopped the elevator! Just awesome...plus we finaly see him use his powers in front of a Luthor without a memory loss! I can't wait to watch that scene again.

Note from the mod, don't tell people not to 'complain'. Everyone enjoys pointing out nitpicks every so often. Also, do not direct posts at other members. This is a SMALLVILLE discussion board.

Not need for any explaining really..its superman guys he could of probably stopped it if it was going a hundred times fast than it was and make it feel like you justs topped and had no gravity pulling you down in the elevator since his arms are the best shocks ever created, the writers do it again!

that's tru, he caught it suddenly. The inertia would still have hurt them a lot (not as bad, tho), but it's all good. I'm not focusing on the details - not in this episode.

Other then that the rest of the episodes FX were fine.

Was it better than in season three's Obsession when Clark punched through and pulled on the cable to stop the elevator?

It seems like Smallville has a tendency to recycle things but make them bigger the next time around.

I chose to ignore the physics of the catch (i thought the same thing about the impact) and enjoy the look on Lionel's face!!!

I totally forgot about the elavator scene from Obsession...Good call Ryan.
Would it be too much for me ask for to have atleast one episode where there weren't any recycled scenes or to have an original story line from beginning to end?

vyperman7
04-20-2006, 07:55 PM
The second I heard about stopping an elevator it immediately made me think of Obsession..

What I am waiting for is for them to have Clark be more powerful than a locomotive. A scene with a train would be awesome. The only problem would be Clark being able to get away or not be seen when he stopped the train. It is a lot bigger than a bus like in S1's Rogue.

At this point it probably would be too much Tom :D

But at least they try to improve on what they have already done.

It was great - the looks exchanged were just awesome. While watching it, I wasn't concerned about the physics of it and didn't really think about it until it was mentioned....

I liked the good old fashioned Superman busting through a wall. They used to do that all the time on Lois and Clark.

Yup. LnC S1 wall-breaking is what I thought as well. The car in the teaser probably to me the worse SV has done on that FX, but you can tell since "Tomb" they have been saving on the budget for the finale. Remember how the heat vision looked right before "Commencement".

Yeah they were going on the cheap side before Commencement. Ageless and Forever had pretty shotty fx.

Been sometime since we seen X-ray vision... to my recolection this is the first time? I could be wrong. But the special effects were nicely done in this episode, good job all around.

The special effects were good in this episode. I agree that i would have loved to see him jump toward the elevator and slow it down, but thats just my geek side wanting more.

Personally,

I still feel like the best effects shot they ever did was back in S1's Rogue when Clark stopped the bus. It looked realistic. In many of the other big effects spots whether it has been the leap of faith in Insurgence, the flight in Crusade, etc... It has been easy to tell that CGI was involved. But the bus stop was straight, to the point, and looked believeable. Definately the one that impressed me the most.

I would have to say that the tornado save in Vortex runs a close second in terms of my favorite effects sequences.

My favorite effect has to be when Clark flew/jump to catch the rocket. That was just so cool when he was hanging on to it with one arm. It was clearly CGI but I thnk they pulled it off very well.

That was definately well done. Obviously CGI has to be used for the type of effects they have on Smallville. But in terms of realism, I think that the bus stop on Rogue was the most realistic and believeable effect they have had.

That is immediately what came to mind for me too. When I saw it, it instantly made me think of L&C.

Gotta agree with you there. It actually seems like the effects in L&C for the wall, were actually done a bit better. That is probably one of the only times you will see L&C beat Smallville in the effects category though. The effects on L&C are pretty terrible. Especially the flying effects in the earlier seasons of the show.

Smallville's visual FXs are awesome. The xray of the falling elevator was soooo cool, along with Clark catching it.

I loved how Clark caught the elevator, despite the fact that Martha and Lionel would be killed nonetheless. The look was perty.

gawd, yes!
I usually try to suspend disbelief when I see the CGI
I usually manage it, too

but when I saw the train smash into limo, my BF told me I said 'oh, come ON!'
I don't expect total realism, but I thought that effect was terrible, lol...

He should have flew up to catch the elivator that would have been bad a**!

GreenRock

The special effects weren't bad, but some attention to realism (i.e. the physics,) can help. Part of the fun in Superman is not in him using his powers straight on, but in how he uses his abilities to solve problems and catastrophies. In some of the Superman comics, they used to make a point of exactly this (that he did it this way and not that way because the other way would have made a serious problem.)

I hate seeing a stupid Superman whose only great in being ultra strong but who is only successful in using his powers because the writers say so, even if it defies physics.

So far, realism isn't very high in some of the episodes. I would prefer it that I don't put much effort in suspending my disbelieve.

That is, jumped, caught the elevator cage and used his legs in the concrete (or something similar) to slow it down. But that would have been a little more expensive to produce.

the part with the cage was alright... But when he catched it was a bit strange. But still.... Would it have been better if he would have cought it and they would have died? :P
