Now that we've had a night to sleep on the episode, what it really as bad as I first thougt? I think I am having meanmouther's remoarse. I was so disappointed after the show aired, that I ventilated on the forum. I am afraid that I didn't have much positive to say. This morning, I am determined to look for the good. There is good, right?

I loved it last night and I still like it now. But this one definitely had a tough crowd from the second it was over. I'm not sure why, either. There have been less-quality episodes that didn't get this backlash. Though I will note that alot of the animosity seems to be directed at the way Clark broke up with Lana. I'm sure that a number of those people were the "Clana shippers" to begin with and this were going to be monumentally disappointed no matter what, but the harsh way it was ended seemed badly planned to people. I have already posted this, but I felt it was the right way to go. He refused to lie to her, so he had to break it off. She basically said that the only way it would be over is if he no longer loved her. To accomplish the break up, he needed to tell her what she needed to hear. Was it harsh? Yeah, but she put herself in that corner a long time ago.

The way they did the break was good for the series as it creates tension, which is needed for writing.

If Clark would have casually broken it off, without big circumstances or emotion surrounding it, Lana wouldn't be expected to act in a scorned manner.

The way Clark broke it off, he comes off as both heroic yet a prick in Lana's view. She's devestated that he could be so seemingly callous after all of the patience she had with him (they try to emphasize this in the opening scenes when Lana wants Clark to come over some alone time, he refuses, then she says she'll wait however long it takes).

So with this tension created, Lana has a good reason to hate Clark and perhaps fall prey to Lex's manipulation, whatever that may entail. Martha Kent gave us some forshadowing, so it'll be interesting to see where the writers take it.

It would have been interesting to see Chloe's response to the actual breakup...(not just Clark talking about it)
