Clark not as ripped?

I always look forward to shirtless Clark but I couldn't help but notice in this one Clark is not nearly as ripped as he was in seasons one and two he was a lot more muscularly defined in those seasons.

True -- he's still very yummy. And, yeah, he did look good in the season opener for season four. I think that it's just in season five. Maybe it's his way of trying to get the writers to stop making get naked!! He's on strike!! :p

man i agree welling has gained some fat. In past years they would of shown his entire pyhsique, but if you noticed in hypnotic they focused on his shoulders and chunky face. Its not just his stomach, but if you notice the fat on his face is building. he has no biceps, and its getting laughable. hes become the most out of shape superman actor sorry to say.

Welling is FAR from unattractive!! However, I think his trainer has probably been going overboard with adding bulkier muscle to his frame. He's not out of shape - it's probably in his contract! - but I much prefer him on the lean muscle side. I've been thinking about writing the show and telling them so - lean muscle is better on him and shows off his attractive features better.

Maybe they were thinking more massive Superman physique - who knows? The extra bulk on him also doesn't work with his longer hair. You can pull of that boyish thing easier if you have the lean muscle frame.

Hi, I have been a fan of Smallville for about 3 years now, mostly because I fell in love with Tom, however I have to recognize that he has gained some weight during the years.
My favorite season is the second and I watch it whenever I can, here is when I notice it the most.
If you watch season 1 he is really skinny and really boy looking, season 2 he looked more manly season 3 best shape ever, season 4 pretty good shape but not as on 3 you can start telling more his age,and in season 5 he is less ripped, his face is a little more full, and he definetly looks his age.
But this is all normall, as the time goes by guys tend to get like that, their face and neck get fuller,he is still a very atttractive man and I still love him, that is the way it is; we can not be at our best forever is called time.

As far as I know they have been working 12-16 hours days since the begining of the show, so he did have time to workout before, maybe he is really getting tired after 5 years and I dont blame him, plus in his "vacations" he takes time to make movies, so the boy is tired.

By the way has anybody pay attention to Lana, she is really skinny, as compared to the first seasons, she sometimes looks sick.

I rewatched the pilot. I think I like a leaner Clark better. But, the present Clark, "fat face" and all is mighty fine. People do change as they get older. Plus, Superman does not have to have a bunch of silly old muscles, he's already strong.

But. then again. Isn't there some charity that needs funds? They could sell tickets to TW's work out sessions and give the proceeds to that needy charity. Of course, they would have to supply sweat towels, ice water, and a defibrillator for those of us whose heart would go into fibrillation. You know what. We could hold this charity event in the Georgia Dome. See? Aren't we thoughtful? We'd be helping TW get into shape and we'd be helping a charity. And we, of course, would have only altruistic intentions.

I agree... I prefer leaner Clark -- but this one works for me. I don't know... his face doesn't look fat to me. Overall, he doesn't look fat to me. I just think that he's getting older.

He's still ruggedly handsome and if TPTB would stop making him wear so much make-up, update his haircut, and let him wear a color other than red than we wouldn't even notice things like this.

The only reason we can even compare it that closely is because he's wearing the exact same clothes he was wearing in the first season. Remember the black hoodie in "Vengeance"??? He looked very good...didn't look chunky to me at all. He looked younger, too.

Let's face it: if the writers keep writing scripts where poor TW has to take off all his clothes, then the viewers are going to notice what he looks like with his clothes off and comment on it. Just like the viewers realized that ED has an awesome body when we saw "Aqua" and "Exposed".

however, for those who have the DVDs, go watch exile, the scene where Edge's 2 guys shoot up Kal. After clark is talking to edge, you see he's bulked up a lot but actually isn't super toned, unless he flexes (phoenix when the mark disappears is IMO when he's in the best shape) In aqua (worst shape there, he shouldn't have his shirt off when AC was there making him look bad) and hypnotic he's just chilling out not doing anything.
however as far as I know he had to bulk up quite a bit between seasons 2 and 3. when you have all that muscle, it takes enormous amounts of working out to stay ripped, cardio isn't enough or you lose the muscle mass...a lot more working out than when you're skinny. He could have stopped lifting weights after exile for 3 weeks or so and not look much better than in hypnotic.
so yeh, he's not AC, but I probably wouldn't be working out to maintain superman physique if I had to spend 12 hours on set...

I don't know... I still think we have unrealistic expectations... this guy would look good on any other show. No one would use the words "fat" and "chunky" to describe him. Like those guys on "Supernatural" ... they're not ripped & people wouldn't say they're fat and chunky?

I really think that the 12 hours days are catching up with him... and he was also directing an episode, too, right? When would he get time to work out?

And he probably doesn't care. Maybe this his was going, "huh, if I don't look that cut, maybe TPTB won't keep coming up with these storylines where I have to take off my clothes."

If you started a thread like that I would join and agree Erica and Allison and Kristin and Annette are all beutiful women and Tom and Michael and both John's are handsome men as well.

I like the pudgy look on Tom. He is hot in anyway but the weight dont really hurt him. I think he is cuter now than he has ever been. I agree in earlier seasons he did have a more defined body but he is so cute with the chubby face. Tom is far from fat that is for sure.

I watched the scene a couple of times, and I honestly couldn't see enough of Welling to see WHAT he looks like. They seem to be taking great care to film him from a significant distance away. When they showed closeups, it was of nothing more than the tops of his shoulders. It made me wonder if his body really has gone all to pieces (hard to believe, considering the way he fills out a T-shirt) or if the actor just doesn't like showing a lot of skin. It seems to me I've read he's a little shy about showing much skin-- maybe they're trying to defer to him so as not to annoy him? They didn't even use a body double to show a lot of his back, the way they have in the past, which struck me as odd, considering they tried to play up the sexiness of that scene in advance. It came across as surprisingly... modest, at least on Clark's part (they showed a lot more of Simone).

Anyway, he looked to me like he might have some decent definition (he looked like he had more pecs than before, honestly, although I suppose that could be excess weight, too) but it was really quite hard to tell because of the way they filmed it.

Alright, let me attempt to reset this, "Tom Welling is not as ripped as he used to be" issue once and for all. First off, he's NOT fat, pudgy, rotund or doughy. Granted, there’s been a drop off since the show first aired. In season one his physique could best be described as lithe, chiseled, sinewy, cut, “leaned-out”, basically he looked like an Abercrombie and Fitch catalog model. This makes sense given the fact that TW was a model prior to concentrating on acting. Right now he resembles any previously buff high school football player in the off-season who’s let himself go a little—a little—and has put ten pounds of unnecessary weight. Also, let’s not forget that TW has never had the best body (from a physical fitness standpoint) on the show. That distinction belongs to John Glover, the MB himself. Remember his prison shower scene from season 4? Whoa. The man’s north of 60 years old and still shredded like one of those iron-man tri-athletes. So I hope that clears things up.

TW is not to blame for gaining some extra pounds, because the guy works 16 hours days, he is still looks pretty good to me.
