I watch Smallville all the time and I love the show. I do like this episode alot. I really did like the opera song that was playing when Lionel Luthor was stabbed in the shower. Does anyone know the name of that opera song, becuase I don't see any information on it anywhere.

That's been bothering me for the longest time, too, because I used to know, but then once I wanted to know because I loved it in that scene, of course I couldn't remeber anymore! If I do have a sudden burst of knowledge again, I'll let you know.

I´m glad there's people interested in that kind of music too. I´ve asking and asking the opera songs played at some of the Luthor scenes but seems no one knows. If anyone of you could tell me...
The one when Lionel is going to commit suicide, the one when he's been arrested and finally the one when Lex arrives to the mansion after the plane and Helen thing and talks to Lionel. Thanks a lot

I also like the way they seem to use opera/classical music for Lionel, the classy man that he is! I think the music they use when he's going to commit suicide is "One Fine Day" from Madame Butterfly by Puccini. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but it sticks out because I love that piece and thought it was interesting it was used in Smallville.

Hearing the darker classic musical and Smallville is one thing getting me more into opera and classical. Sadly I know so little about it it's pathetic

OH! I know the name...just not off the top of my head. I have it somewhere on my itunes. I'll send you a message as soon as I find it. In fact, I have ALL the opera songs downloaded that Lionel has listened to throughout the show, with the exception of the one played at the end of "Forsaken" when Lionel is arrested (still can't find that one) and the one he's listening to very briefly and lightly in his limo at the beginning of "Mercy" (can't find that one either). But any other ones you have questions on, let me know.

I LOVE the fact that "Smallville" plays opera and classical music. I wish they'd do it more often like they did in season three. It was such a daring, bold, cinematic move to end that season with Mozart's Requiem (played in "Covenent" when Lionel gets his hair shaved). I hope they keep up the tradition, and maybe now start playing some of those darker operatic songs with Lex, since he is becoming the tragic villain of the story. Also, they should show Lionel listening to it more often.

It's pretty funny-I try to educate people on opera, and I love showing off the fact that I love it. I'll pull into the school parking lot blasting opera (as opposed to blasting rap like most people do), and my friends will always laugh because it's become a trademark of mine now. :)

So, yeah, if anyone has questions regarding the operas on "Smallville", feel free to ask. :)

"I also like the way they seem to use opera/classical music for Lionel, the classy man that he is!"

Yeah, I love that too. I think they should sometimes have opera pieces with Lex to make his scenes that much more dramatic, but I think it's mostly Lionel's thing, and it's cool that they've maintained continuity with that by showing Lionel listening to opera all the time. They need to bring some more operas back into the show! We haven't seen Lionel listening to one since "Mercy". Bring on the opera!

(PS: That "Flower Duet" song played when Lionel was showering is also played in "Superman Returns" when Lex is on the boat talking to Kitty about Prometheus-I think this was a nod to Lex becoming like Lionel in the future and thus a nod to "Smallville". What do you all think?)

I finally found that opera song used in Luther's suicide scene.
It is performed by Alain Vanzo and is called "Je crois entendre encore" (from Bizet's opera).

Enjoy!

Beautiful piece. I'm pretty sure it's on iTunes. And yes, The Definitive Smallville soundtrack has everything. It is the only source I check for SV music anymore.

I hope this list of songs helps. Please message back here or send me a PM or email to let me know if you get the list and if you need any more help finding songs:

-"Un bel dA vedremo" from Madama Butterfly-this one is a bit of a landmark for "Smallvillle"-it's the first scene where they had Lionel listening to opera. In the episode "Lineage" when Lex asks Lionel if he has an illegitimate son (Lucas) or not, and Lionel lies, saying, "He, uh...died...before his first birthday."

In "Suspect" the music Lionel is listening to before being shot is an aria from La Wally by Catalani called "Ebben?...Ne Andro Lontana." (I have the Opera Babes version of this song. They are so talented at replicating the sound of the original opera. Their voices are absolutely beautiful, and their cause is to help make the mainstream listener more interested in opera by their beauty and youth...you should download some of their stuff...it's awesome).

"Salut demeure chaste et pure (Faust)"-this is the opera song that is playing when Lex returns to his mansion after his fight with Helen (on the Luthor Corp jet), and Lex tells Lionel, "If I was anybody else's son, I'd have died on that island. I'm alive because you taught me to be a survivor. If I can keep my pride in check, I know there's more to learn from you. I was hoping your offer still stands to run Luthor Corp together." Lex and Lionel shake hands and hug, almost like a real father and son, albeit only for one brief moment in time.

"Die Perlenfischer_Je Crois Entendre Encore"-This is the famous scene where Lionel nearly gives up on life because of his liver disease. After framing Lex for the mishaps at Lionel's secret labs, he is ready to let his son rot in jail, while he aims a gun to his mouth, about to end it all.

"Stabat Mater"-In the episode "Truth", after Chloe finds out, straight from the horse's mouth, that Lionel murdered his own parents for the insurance money, Lionel calls her at the end of the episode, saying, in a casual and deceptively friendly tone, "Hello, Miss Sullivan. It's only me. Uh, no need to look for that, uh, conversation we had earlier. It's gone. And, uh...well, that's it. No need to call back."

""Convien Partir", from the Opera "La Fille Du Regiment". SPECIAL THANKS TO A YOUTUBE USER CALLED DARKPROSE FOR PROVIDING ME WITH THIS. I have been looking for this song for years! It is the song Lionel is listening to in "Forsaken" when Lex and him discuss betrayal right before Loder and the FBI arrest him for the murder of his parents. Beautiful, haunting song. The exact version of this song to search for (since there are many versions) is this: the version from The Great Operas album, Compagnia D' Opera Italiana & Patrizia Zanardi (also check out SmallvilleWiki for trivia about opera songs like this; that is the site where Darkprose found this after years of us Lionel fans searching!)

The first song/track from "Mozart's Requiem" is my personal favorite piece: the one that is played during the season three finale, "Covenant"; while Lionel gets his hair shaved, Lex is poisoned, and Chloe is blown up, and the infamous scene of Lionel bald at the end of the sequence, saying, "Thank you," to the barber...it's classic. This was Lionel at his most evil.

"LakmA H20 (Flower Duet)"-I have the Opera Babes version of this one as well. It's so elegant and beautiful. This is the scene where Lionel gets stabbed in the prison shower (presumably by someone whom Lex paid off to scare Lionel) in the episode "Gone"; later, Lionel tells Lex, "Well, done, Lex. But wasn't it you who warned me: don't wound what you cannot kill?"

"Casta Diva"-Lionel is watching the DVD evidence of Clark's powers at the end of the episode "Cyborg," as he says, "Your secret is safe with me...Kal-El."

"Der Holle Rache" by Natalie Choquette is the song Lionel is listening to in his office when he sends his men to Clark's barn to kidnap him and taser him with Kryptonite to lock him up in a Kryptonite cage in the episode "Traveler". It sadly marks the last opera song that "Smallville" has had since then. Amazing song. I don't know what the lyrics mean specifically, but I heard somewhere that this opera is all about betrayal, which would definitely fit this episode perfectly.

The ONLY opera song I STILL have not found is the one Lionel is listening to in his limo in the episode "Mercy" at the beginning. If anyone knows what this is, please please send me a PM or message me on here to let me know. Thanks so much!
