There is an amazing band out there right now that the mainstream seems to have overlooked, called Porcupine Tree. They are from England and are one of the leaders of the progressive rock genre. If you like bands like Pink Floyd, Radiohead, Tool, or The Mars Volta then you should love these guys. The band leader, Steven Wilson is a hero in the prog rock world. Started playing guitar at age 6 and is a self taught producer, sound engineer, keyboardist, pianist, bassist and drummer! He's also known to produce Opeth's albums if you've heard of them, but Porcupine Tree's music is not very similar to the death metal style of Opeth. Overall Porcupine Tree is an extremely talented band with great musicians and songwriting.

Album Recommendations

1. Modern Rock/Pop Fans
In Absentia and Deadwing

Modern Rock/Pop Fans who want something a bit "different"
Stupid Dream and Lightbulb Sun

Prog-fans, Ambient-fans, who want partial song-orientated tracks, but still want the pyschadelicness of early albums
The Sky Moves Sideways and Signify

True LSD Experiences
Voyage 34 and Up the Downstair

Personally I would start off with In Absentia. It's the album that got me into them back when I was into bands like Green Day. I heard it and just thought it was incredible. I would get the entire album however instead of a few random songs by the band. They're an album oriented band and the it's a concept album (follows a connected storyline like Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, and some other famous concept albums).

Honestly I havent heard one weak song by them and they have so many great ones, but I'll try to think of a few highlights. If you want to hear a few tracks first to see if you'd like them before you go buying the entire album I'd suggest:

The Newer Stuff

Blackest Eyes - opening track on In Absentia.

Trains - 2nd track on In Absentia, beautiful acoustic song getting heavier later on. Overall amazing song.

The Sound of Muzak - Very catchy atmospheric song.

Arriving Somewhere But Not Here - One of my favorites, 12 minute epic track. Quite possibly some of the greatest songwriting ever here.

Lazarus - If you like light pop, this is for you, my mom's favorite song :D

The Start of Something Beautiful - Basically the title speaks for itself

Middle Era Porcupine Tree

Even Less - Opener on Stupid Dream, maybe their best opening track.

Stranger By the Minute - A very catchy/poppy song off Stupid Dream.

Shesmovedon - One of their more known songs from Lightbulb Sun.

Russia On Ice - Another epic 13 minute. Very spacey and well written.

The Early Years

Radioactive - Great epic song with a fantastic guitar solo.

Synesthesia - Really catchy opener off Up the Downstair

Always Never - One of their best early songs.

Fadeaway - Great album closer. Very emotional.

Moonloop - This is 17 minutes of ambient sound. Very relaxing.

Stars Die - Very calm relaxing song.

Waiting Phase One - 2nd best off Siginify.

Dark Matter - My favorite off Signify.
