I think that was a good move bringing in Papelbon in the 8th. Francona knows that Berroa is an easy out to start the 9th and then you roll the dice against Jeter and Damon. Looks like Posada is hurt and if the Yankees lose him, that's bad news.

I think that the majority of empty seats were because of the long rain delay but it still bothers me that a lot of seats near the field are empty every night.

Now we get to see the wonderful Yankees bullpen. I wouldn't be surprised if the Red Sox blow this one open because the Yankees have nobody who is any good down in the pen, outside of Rivera.

WickedJenn

Look at all those empty seats close to the field..I bet they're regretting their insane ticket prices for those..

Well, it's nasty out too. But yeah, I'd be grandstanding it.

And now he walks him. That's just great. Walk the number nine batter to face Ellsbury. Horrible job by Ramirez there.

Way to go Pepsi. 3-0 to Ellsbury. I'm going to call him Pepsi unless he gets out of this jam.

Alright, Coke got out of it. At least they have a fighting chance. I'd pinch hit Gardner or Pena for Berroa. I don't want Berroa facing Papelbon.

I'm going May 24th against the Phillies with my brother who is a Mets fan. At least he'll be rooting for the Yankees because he obviously doesn't want the Phillies to win.

Infield hit. Nice move pinch hitting Gardner. Now someone needs to blast one out of the park. Just no double play.

Yeah, well the Yanks better win later today, assuming there is no rain, because they can't drop 5 straight to the Sox. I don't care if it's early in the season, the Yankees need to beat this team once. They always seem to lose a lot to them early in the season, too. Then later in the year, the Yankees get back at them but you can't expect that to happen every year.

When did he get hurt? Was it yesterday?

IA about the DH. The Yanks lost Wang last year because he was running the bases, which I know is ridiculous since a pitcher should be able to run without getting hurt but strange things happen. The way I see it, pitchers are paid a lot of money to pitch, not to hit.

That's a freak thing. That really bothered me but I've pretty much accepted the fact that the only way the Red Sox were going to break the curse was to do something crazy like that. Also, one of the problems with being a Yankees fan is that since they are usually good and make the playoffs, last year being the exception, there's going to be a lot of opportunities for heartbreak like that. That's why last year wasn't really painful for me because I knew they weren't making the playoffs and I never got my heart ripped out. Of course, I'll gladly take the heartbreak in exchange for all of the success.

Of course. I can understand that. Having the Yankees face the Cubs in the World Series would scare me because I can see the Yankees blowing another 3-0 lead. I think that I would rather not see the Yankees make the World Series if it meant facing the Cubs. That's how strongly I feel about that.

Posada's on the DL with a strained hamstring. It doesn't look like it is that serious so hopefully he'll be back in about 3 weeks or so. BTW, how about Greinke on the Royals? He has 6 wins already and the Royals are in first place. Pretty impressive stuff.

That'll be against Atlanta so the Mets will miss him. The Perez move to the bullpen makes no sense to me. The guy can't throw strikes so what good is he coming out of the bullpen? He needs to go down to the minors but he refuses to do so. The Mets have their hands full with him at the moment.

Yeah Cole is just snake bit this year he has the elbo problem in the spring no volocity in his first start then hit in the arm and a sprained ankle last time out and with the rest of the rotation a mess it hurts. Man the Philies have had drama this year, the World Series win, the Tragic loss of Harry Kalas not to mention all of their wins execpt two have been come from behind. As to the question above who would trade for him? and Baseball contracts are gaurenteed so the would eat the money. They will move him to the Bullpen because 1 he can do less damage there second they gave him a big contract so they won't give up on him this fast and third I heard the announcers say that he would have to accecpt a minor league reassignment.

myankskent

They can release him, but then the Mets would have to eat his 36 million dollar contract. I'm not sure if he has a no-trade clause. I'll see if I can find out. They obviously can't send him down to the minors unless he agrees and he has stated that he does not want to go down.

Veras actually looked good today and he took him out after a couple of batters. It's ok Jenn. The Yankees just tied it up thanks to a bases clearing double from Tex, so he's on second with two outs. Thanks to the lovely weather that we have been having in New York, they are in a rain delay at the moment. I've had it with all of the rain this year. I can't remember the last time that it was this bad. I feel like I'm living in Seattle. It rains every damn day.

You're not the only one losing faith. I'm very disappointed that this team has, once again, gotten off to a slow start, especially after what happened last year. They never get big hits. Their bullpen is terrible and the starters are inconsistent. Everybody is saying that when AROD comes back, that will give this team a shot in the arm and that might be true, but is AROD going to come out of the bullpen and pitch? Will AROD being in the lineup magically make everyone else get hits with runners in scoring position? I don't think so.

Me too, it's been raining for three days straight here. I saw Teixeira had a double right before the downpour.

Yeah, that was a big hit because it tied the game. The problem is that he came up again in the 10th inning with the tying run on third with less than two outs and couldn't hit a fly ball deep enough to get the run in. That's the disheartening thing that is happening with the Yanks right now. You'll see signs of something good, like that bases clearing double, but then they seem to revert back to not getting the job done in a big spot.

They'll be playing the Mets this weekend. The Mets had a very good win last night shutting out the Phillies with Santana on the mound. After losing two to the Mets down in Turner Field, the Braves need to win some games this weekend.

That ticks me off. The Dodgers were off to a great start, including 13-0 at home. I guess I should be thankful that the Dodgers play in a weak division. Maybe Kemp, Hudson, Loney, and Furcal can keep things together until July.

At least he hasn't been accused of tipping pitches to opposing batters like a certain third baseman.

I can think of a few things wrong with the Yankees

1-pressure-missing playoffs last year-big contracts-new stadium
2-Arod bein out-
3-issues with steroids-books
4-CC and Tex not comin close to themoney bein paid em
5-Rivera had major surgery and is gettin up in age
6-Posada is out and oft injured
7-no middle relief
8-guys like damon-jeter who can hit but have lost a step-with damon bein a poor fielder
9-Wangs sudden troubles
10-perhaps payin for not goin after santanna and keepin the trio-joba-hughes and the other pitcher

I can think of a few things wrong with the Yankees

1-pressure-missing playoffs last year-big contracts-new stadium

Pressure is a very important factor. They may have great players, but they are human and playing in New York, or should I say in New York for the Yankees, is one of the toughest things to do.

2-Arod bein out-

True, but, Arod was healthy last year and the Yankees stunk with runners in scoring position. This is something that they need to change this season. So far, they haven't.

4-CC and Tex not comin close to themoney bein paid em

Tex is lost at the plate right now. He's still hitting under .200 and if he doesn't start to hit soon, he's going to have to be as hot as a firecracker to get his average up to .300.

5-Rivera had major surgery and is gettin up in age

Sad, but true. That's why I wanted Joba in the pen. The Yankees have their next closer in Joba, but unfortunately they only see him as a starter at this point.

6-Posada is out and oft injured

Yup. They need to get him back ASAP.

7-no middle relief

Yeah, it just goes to show you that bullpen pitchers are hard to predict. The Yankees had an amazing bullpen last year and this year, everybody has stunk, even though they have the same guys.

8-guys like damon-jeter who can hit but have lost a step-with damon bein a poor fielder

I love Damon, but he's a disaster in the outfield. Sometimes he has trouble with routine fly balls. Jeter can still make great plays, with that jump throw deep in the hole and going out to catch those pop-ups in the outfield over his shoulder, but his range has become a major problem. He also has some throwing issues.

9-Wangs sudden troubles

They need to get him healthy and pitching with confidence again. He might be hideous in the postseason, but he still is a 19 game winner. Put a healthy Wang in the rotation with Sabathia and Burnett, and I don't know if you can find a better starting 3 in baseball.

10-perhaps payin for not goin after santanna and keepin the trio-joba-hughes and the other pitcher

Other pitcher being Kennedy, who got hurt yesterday. He has an aneurysm in his arm and who knows when he'll be healthy again. Those things usually take a long time to recover from. I would never trade Joba. He's too good as a reliever and he definitely has the potential to be a great starter. It's just that I think that the Yankees need a setup man/Rivera back-up more than a starter right now.

The Yankees are still in a lot of trouble, but Sabathia gave the Yankees exactly what they needed tonight...a complete game shutout. Nice to see Arod hit a three run bomb on the first pitch he saw. That should take the pressure off.

Gaston is doing it again. As for the Yankees high powered offense...simply put, they don't have one. Jeter was hurt today and didn't play and Matsui left the game because of a tight quad. Posada is still on the DL along with Nady and Teixeira is hitting under .200. Right now, the Yankees offense looks very old and very beat up.

Yes I do like the Cardinals so I was happy with the 2006 W.S. The Braves shoulda won the '96 series though, but Wholers fell apart and they blew that 6-0 lead:(

im guessing your a happy camper myankskent now that the yanks have won 6 in a row i knew it was a matter time before they got their act together. Plus a-rod returning has been a blessing on their fortunes. Their pitching is still suspect i dont see them going to far with that rotation though i really love rivera.

They're on a nice run right now but they still have a lot to prove. I actually think that they're starting rotation will be ok, especially if Wang gets back which might happen later in the week. They're bullpen is still a big concern. In terms of offense, they're usually hot and cold, which is why the pitching needs to hold up. I don't think that the Yankees are going to bludgeon teams like they have in the past. They need to win the 1-0 game occasionally if they have plans of going far this year.

Yeah, but they did win in 1995. It's just very hard to repeat. I know that the Yankees did in the late 90's but that's a special kind of team that we'll likely never see again. But you did get the Cardinals championship in 2004 so that's still fairly recent for you.

I'm sure you would've.

Anyone catch the Mets/Dodgers game last night? The Mets basically handed the Dodgers the game. Church missed third base and was called out on the appeal, otherwise he would've scored the go ahead run in the 11th and the Mets made two errors in the bottom of the 11th, which led to the winning run for the Dodgers. The Mets made 5 errors in the game. Just an awful game.

That happens all of the time. I remember going to Baltimore with my high school back in the late 90's and the place was jumping with Orioles fans. Now, they just don't draw a lot of fans and when the Yankees come in, Yankees fans take over that ballpark. The same thing happens when the Yankees go to Tampa.

I think that Toronto has been playing over their head. So far, they've lost 5 out of 6 against the Red Sox and Yankees. They haven't played the Rays yet either. These are the games that Toronto needs to win if they plan on staying in the race.

I still think that Toronto is going to be a decent team this year. They'll give teams a hard time, especially when Halladay pitches and they have injuries in their starting rotation. Once they get some of these guys back, they'll get better.

Agreed about the Yankees. While it's nice that they have won 9 in a row, they're not that good. Very few teams are. I'm more interested to see what they do once they end up losing a game.

These days, the only way you are going to beat Halladay is if you win 1-0. I hate the fact that the Red Sox didn't face him in their series. Of course, the Yankees will probably face him 6 times this year.

Did you see the Red Sox/Mets game? Youkilis got hit by a pitch by Santana and he starts complaining. I'm sorry Youkilis, but if you are going to put your body over the plate, you are going to get hit. Just ask Jeter, who never complains when he gets hit about 20 times a year. Fireworks in the Yankees game too. Burnett hit Utley in the first...then Myers threw behind the back of Jeter and both teams got warned. That's something to watch this weekend.

I doubt that anything will come of it the Phils have Happ starting today, who is making his first start and Cole Hammeles tommarrow who has already managed to hurt himself tripping over his own feet so I doubt they would risk any suspentions or injuries.

The stadium was great, but the game was not. I lost my voice as I always do at these games. I thought that after Melky's single to tie it in the 9th, the Yanks were going to win, but it wasn't meant to be. The stadium is huge. Much bigger than the old Yankees Stadium. When you walk in, it's like you're walking into a palace. I was sitting in left field, about 20 feet from the foul pole in fair territory, two rows back, just above that Canon sign out there. All of the seats are padded, at least at field level, and extremely comfortable. I'm not sure about the upper deck. Anyone who is a Yankees fan will love this stadium, that's for sure. Just one word of caution...if you happen to sit out in left field like I did, wear lots of sunscreen because I got all burned up. I thought that I was going to be ok because I did put sunscreen on, but the sun was ridiculously strong. I took some pictures of the stadium so maybe I'll post some later.

After the game, I went to this place called the Dugout, which is right next to the stadium. It's amazing how many Phillies fans came in there to gloat about the win. I guess when you win one world championship and beat the Yanks 2 out of 3 in May, that's enough to wipe out a history filled with 10,000 losses. But I do have to give the Phillies credit. They're a team with a lot of heart. Though they did benefit from the Mets failures in September the last couple of years, they still won the games that they needed to win. I think that a Yankees/Phillies World Series would be pretty cool to see, but I won't get ahead of myself.

And that does not surprise me in the least Matt, that the Phillies fans did that, because that's what they do, most of them. They never win championships so when they do get one, they gloat about it as much as possible since it'll be another lifetime before they get one again. They take it and hold on to it and think that it gives them the right to talk crap to fans of a team who has 26 championships and a legacy none can match. That Cubs team is a mess right now. I can't believe how badly they are playing with Piniella as the manager. This is a team that I thought was a lock to win the central and have a good chance of going deep into the playoffs. It's still early, but they need to turn it around quickly.

Yeah. To be fair to Tampa, they lost a lot of players. Kazmir is out. Percival might retire. They lost Iwamura for the season and Bartlett at SS. I'm not surprised about Toronto. Did you see the highlights of that game with the Orioles yesterday? That's probably as bad of a loss that you can possibly have, especially when Halladay was the starting pitcher that day. It is going to be Yankees/Sox until the end this year. I can see the rivalry getting very heated, especially if the Yankees start beating the Red Sox in some games, which they usually do in the middle of the season. The Yankees never seem to beat the Red Sox in their early meetings.

I saw that Cubs game last night on MLB Network. They just couldn't get the big hit and the Dodgers, even without Manny, continue to play great baseball. I still cannot believe that Soriano is swinging at sliders over a foot off the plate. That drove me nuts when he was on the Yankees. He really killed them in that Marlins series as well in 2003. He struck out almost every at-bat.

alfonso soriano is sort of like a ryan howard they both strike out a whole bunch but they do produce in the home run categories each year. Alfonso has struck out over a 100x every year hes played in the majors (where he played over a 100 games). Albert Pujols is lucky if he strikes out over 70x a year.

Yeah, I just don't like Soriano as a lead-off hitter. If he's going to strike out that much, it would probably be better to move him to the middle of the order so that he can drive in runs. Pujols is the best player in baseball.

The Yanks beat the Indians. There was a rain delay of an hour and a half before the game started, but when is there not a rain delay in Cleveland these days? I think that every game they played this week was delayed by rain. Nice to see the Blue Jays beat the Red Sox. With that Red Sox loss, the Yanks are in first place, alone, for the first time since 2006.

I think that it's time you get the MLB package.

It was a good game tonight. Pettitte had to leave with a stiff back. We'll see if it stops him from making his next start.

Not in the position to get that now, but hopefully eventually.

I'm glad they allowed no more runs.

Ryan Dempster pitched 7 shutout innings for the Cubs vs. the Dodgers today..Why couldn't he have done that in the playoffs last year?!?

Well, I am quite annoyed at the ump calling Derek Jeter out when he was safe. Ugh.

Texeira strikes again, man that guy is king of homeruns. Wang actually did half-decent even though the Yanks lost. Even the announcers on TBS were notating that.

What I don't understand is why Wang didn't pitch the 9th inning. Isn't he supposed to be a starter who can pitch more than 3 innings? I don't get why Girardi went to the bullpen at that point, especially when nobody in the bullpen can throw strikes. Also, why is Gardener not trying to steal a base in the top half of the inning with Posada up. The whole point was to stay out of the double play. I know that the Yankees have been playing great baseball, but this game annoyed me and IMO, Girardi is to blame.

I heard them discussing EIGHT pitchers up in the bullpen for the Yankees and how that was a crazy ridiculous amount.

I just cannot figure out Girardi's thinking with the bullpen. He changes pitchers like t-shirts....

Going back to what I said about Gardner not stealing, that was his fault, not Girardi's. Apparently Girardi gave him the steal sign and Gardner never stole. So that's one less thing to blame Girardi for. Bad day for Gardner today. He didn't steal and he botched a fly ball in the outfield that led to runs being scored.

I don't like how Girardi is handling the bullpen and I certainly don't like how he is handling Wang. The Yankees are about to destroy Wang because if he doesn't get a start pretty soon, his stamina is going to be shot. I read today that if he were to start five days from now, he'd only be able to throw 80 pitches because he's not throwing enough. Today was the perfect day to stretch him out and Girardi only pitches him for 3 innings because he apparently was in a hurry to bring in Coke and Roberts, two guys that can't throw strikes. Again, I just don't get it. Plus, Wang is trying to get over that awful start he had and he is also dealing with recovering from his injury last season. Throwing him in the bullpen and messing up his daily routine as a starter is not going to help him. In fact, it might make things a lot harder on him.

Two reasons one the Dodgers were red hot and two the Cubs fell into the same trap the Braves did all thoes years they would win the division about a month out and then be soft when the playoffs start.

mets bullpen blew another game looks like even with all their spending and purchasing of pitchers their bullpen is still their weakness. The yanks set a new record with 18 games of errorless play, a-rod is clutch, and mariners already have 42 errors on the season.

I don't think that the Mets bullpen is weak. They still have the best ERA in baseball but their 8th inning man is now a huge question mark. If Putz doesn't straighten himself out, then Parnell will probably have to pitch the 8th and if he can't pitch as effectively in the 8th inning, then the Mets are going to be in some trouble.

The errorless streak is amazing for the Yanks. I'm still shocked that the record was only 17 games but hopefully the Yankees will add many more games so nobody can ever catch them.

Last night was a great Yankee game. They actually kept Joba in until Rivera, color me happily surprised. Joba made an outstanding diving catch, saving his butt BIG time.

I was cracking up when he was swatting the bugs and mouthing "Friggin'' (insert other word there) bugs."

Congrats to the Yankees for setting a new league record of 18 games error free!

Additionally, A Rod was kept mostly quiet, as was Texeira. I must say, Derek Jeter, even though he was hitting good and got his 2600th hit, proved again how amazing a shortstop he is...he's always RIGHT there, and last night was no exception.

If the Yankees keep this momentum up, they just might be #1 in the AL, they are only .010 behind the Rangers, whom they play tonight.

I thought the Mets were going to beat the Pirates, as it was 5-1 for a while, but a comeback from the Pirates didn't make that possible.

Another great win for the Yankees tonight. Teixeira got all fired up because he was hit twice in the game and he had a huge take-out slide at second based that kept the inning going. Then the Yankees offense exploded. I like what I am seeing with this team right now. They're showing heart. I still don't like the bullpen, but if they keep winning, they'll have plenty of time to straighten out the bullpen over the course of the season.

Anybody watching the Cubs/Braves game?? Cubs were ahead 5-0 and pitching a no-hitter into the 7th then it all fell apart. They gave up 3 runs in the 8th then the game tying 2 run homer with 2 outs in the 9th! It's still 5-5 in the 12th..

I'm not watching the Cubs game, but I did hear about it. The Cubs are still struggling. You just can't blow a 5 run lead like that if you want to get back into the divisional race. If Atlanta can win this game, they'll be just two games behind the Mets. The Phillies are playing great ball, though.
