You guys ever notice... people hardly EVER talk on the phone... they just go out of their way, driving or walking miles at a time, to barge in on the person they want to talk to, say 2 sentances, and then more or less hang up on them by walking away after speaking for less than a minute? It's bizzare... and I'm suprised the writers/directors havn't picked up on this in 5 years.
Scenes like that are rediculous.

It wouldn't be as dramatic if they spoke on the phone.

Plus in reality, really serious conversations ought to happen in person... and since it's a dramatic series, a good number of the conversations are really serious... so they happen in person :)
... but mostly its probably what CK86 said :)

What's ridiculous is how there's obviously a severe strain in the relationship (no Brokeback jokes here, OK?) between Lex and Clark, yet he keeps just barging into his mansion to confront him.

actually...I think they talk on the phone quite a bit. They just happen to always call at the stupidest times. (IE driving on a slick icy road, frantic and disoriented, etc.) The only reason they talk so much in person is because what they have to talk about is serious, important, or in need of face to face confrontation.
its more like everyone is smallville is a big fat drama queen then not using their phone enough

It's something I've noticed as well. On top of that, the characters are many times outright rude or disrespectful to each other and that bothers me. No "hello" or "talk to you later" or whatever, they just walk out the door. I am really close with all my friends and their families; we're all basically family to each other and I just scratch my head at how the characters treat people they call their friends.
One of my best friends in high school always seemed to have an "extra" piece of his mom's amazing chocolate cake. It was like that for all of high school. When I was his best man at the wedding his mom revealed to me that she would always make sure to put an extra piece in there for me. That's one of those tiny bits of friendship that add up to love and I guess that's why fanfics exist because you're never going to see nitpicking details like that in a 42 min episode.
Sorry to ramble...
I dont think theres really time for small talk in the epsides, even though I love how Lex kept bringing it up. If they showed more hanging out, and real phone conversations I think the episodes wouldnt be nearly as intresting.

I think that what so many people forget here is that Smallville is in the genre of fantasy, which by definition means they don't have to be SO realistic and which means you must be able to suspend your disbelief and allow for some odd situations that would not normally occur in order for you to enjoy it without nitpicking it to death.
Continuity is not too much to ask, even of a fantasy, but things like talking on cell phones vs. in person--that's realism that a fantasy should not have to worry about.
Even in shows like 24, which are not fantasy and should be more realistic, they don't show characters eating or going to the bathroom the whole 24 hours in real time--mainly because, who wants to see that? The whole purpose of the show is to keep us on the edge of our seats, not to be perfectionistically realistic.

:rotfl: :rotfl: Maybe it's so people can't hang up? (yes, i know it's for dramatic purposes.)

How much more dramatic can you get?
Clark: Lex, tell me what your doing
Lex: Why Clark, I'm *click**dialtone*
Clark: hello, Lex? Hey, you there?

Nospam, that is so neat about your chocolate cake. All my friends would have just eaten the extra piece of cake and gotten fat. But yes, I agree that the folks at Sv need to learn to use a phone.

Now with the advent of cell phones, they are not tethered to the wall any longer. Should at least be able to give the host a heads up that the host is about to have a visitor. Maybe if Lex had warning that someone was coming over, he could wake up his security guards.

It's better they don't talk a lot on the phone. I still wonder how they even have cell phone signals in smallville.

Some of you are missing my point.
The characters go OUT OF THEIR WAY to talk in person, but then they settle for 15 seconds of diolague before storming out.
It would make more sense to me if they cut from such scenes without showing one of them walk away. Now, with Clark I understand cuz he can get anywhere real fast. But other people will walk or drive 5 miles, talk for 2 seconds, and before cutting to the next scene they'll stomp out of the room. Rather than show them walk away after saying to sentances, just cut to the next scene.
It's hilarious to me... and it drives me nuts.
