Love James Marsters as Professor Milton Fine, otherwise know as Brainiac - though when his charter is first introduced (Aqua) <<yes I know you see him briefly in Arrival>> I was kind of confused as to why he's helping Clark and being nice to him - though after some thought it was easy to see his goal.
Right ... so he's after Lex, BUT knowing becoming an outright enemy of Clark would be stupid and probably take up his time - he divides Clark and Lex instead by giving Clark an alternative look at the world, simutsosly challenging Lex mentally – driving there friendship to the edge (basically already there) by showing Clark what Lex is up to, thus making them sworn enemies.
(May be a bit more complex than I describe, but you get the idea)
Then once they’re enemies, and Clark is in his (Brainiac’s) trust, Clark will be easy to manipulate to whatever Brainiac’s ultimate goal is – which I’m sure will involve the enslavement of humanity.
