I don't like Buffy much, but a lot of people on this site do. I watched the series quite a few times though. I might just have to read that Prowlers series though, sounds good

The Buffyverse novels (especially writtened by Christopher Golden and Nancy Holder), for an example, like The Gatekeeper Trilogy(also known as The Ghost Roads) and The Lost Slayer. The Buffyverse novels are known as the expanded universe.
The Harry Potter Series
The Star Wars expanded universe novels specifically post-Return of the Jedi

When I was younger:
Anne of Green Gables series
The Chronicles of Narnia
Nancy Drew
R.L. Stine books about Fear Street

I like to read about cellular biology and genetics. Does that count? I've never read books based on a TV series or movie. I have read some comic books, though.

Well, Buffyverse novels is/are based off the series, but they are so huge in it's own storyline that it is separate from the show. It uses the shows storylines and mythology, and just expanded on it. It's known as expanded universe since the novel series is so large, and only Buffy creator Joss Whedon labels what things are canon and what is not. Not all books based off tv shows do that. It all depends on the creators/executive producers take on it, and involvement.

My favorite series is "Incarnations of Immortality" by Pier Anthony. There are seven books in the series and each book is in the perspective of one of the incarnations... death, time, war, mother nature, fate, devil, and God. They are amazingly written and intricately interwoven. I strongly recommend them.

I like the Harry Potter series. Xanth is okay is small doses. I love the Christopher Pike series. And of course the Lord of the Rings trilogy, plus the Hobbit are high on my list. Can't think of any others at the moment.

I loved these books but have to say the first one will always be my favorite..On a Pale Horse which is about the job of Death. I also read some of the Xanth series but after awhile it did get a bit much and for some odd reason enjoyed the first one the most A Spell for Chameleon. I guess any first book Peirs Anthony writes I should read :lol:

I also loved Chronicles of Narnia and the Sword of Shannara... also there were quite a few TV shows from Stephen King novels which I'm also a big fan of.

Start with The Dark Elf Trilogy, since it deals with the origins of the dark elf Drizzt Do'Urden, who will be in most of the Forgotten Realms stories you read. Then should read The Icewind Dale Trilogy, which occurs after the events of The Dark Elf Trilogy.

oh yes, those are good! No one writes Buffy better than Chris and Nancy (ok, with the exception of Joss! LOL).

My faves include:
The Harry Potter series
Lord of the Rings
Terry Pratchett's Discworld series (Vimes rules!)
Laurell K. Hamilton's Merry Gentry books
Star Wars expanded Universe novels
etc., etc., etc....

as you can see, I have a tendency to like fantasy/sci-fi. :)

Oooo me too.

I was in love with TA Barron's "Lost Years of Merlin" Series back when I read it in 7th or 8th grade. And even now (I'm in college) I can pick it up and I still love it. :)

"Merlin" was pretty good. I found it a bit dry though. What I was surprised to really not like was "The Once and Future King". I finally read that, expecting it to be great and felt really let down. It wasn't good at all, I thought.

In straight prose (no pictures) I'm a longtime fan of Robert A. Heinlein, especially his Lazarus Long stories. I've read all his books, own most of them, and re-read my favorites periodically.

In comics/graphic novels, my current favorites are Kurt Busiek's Astro City and The Authority. Busiek is a lifelong comics fan himself and has written for both DC and Marvel (including the Superman:Secret Identity graphic novel); in his series, Astro City is a place where superheroes are fairly commonplace, and some of them bear undeniable similarities to Superman and other DC Universe characters. Great fun, recommended for all. The Authority is a different beast entirely; The Authority are the seven most powerful super-beings on Earth, and are roughly analogous to the Justice League, except that this series is very dark and explores adult themes. (The Superman and Batman analogues are gay, enjoy killing bad guys, and have adopted the reincarnation of the group's former leader.)

The rest of my reading (other than here and on Usenet) is usually limited to magazines and most often computer-related.

I'm not sure if anyone has ever read the book Blindness by Jose Saramago, but if you haven't you should definately pick it up. The book is brilliant. I would also recommend The World According to Garp, and 1984.

Looks like I'm out of step with everyone else here. After spending decades devouring classic science fiction, Tom Clancy, loads of nonfiction and just about anything else that caught my eye, I've returned to my roots -- comics. Okay, actually I'm reading graphic novels and trade paperback collections instead of individual issues, but Amazon and my local bookstores are getting rich feeding my latest obsession.

And just which comics/GNs/TPBs am I reading? Just about anything involving Superman, Batman and other Justice League members, plus other DC Universe characters. Wildstorm's Stormwatch, The Authority, and related titles. A few Marvel titles. Today UPS delivered "Power Girl" and "Supergirl: Many Happy Returns". I'm currently reading "The Sandman: Preludes And Nocturnes". All of the announced books that deal with Infinite Crisis are on order. Beyond actual comics and their close kin, I'm also reading some of the paperback (non-graphic) novels featuring DC Universe characters -- just finished "JLA: Exterminators".

Beyond the comics genre, I'm currently very much into the novels of Vince Flynn and Ted Bell. (Belle's "Hawke" character is sort of a cross between James Bond and Batman.)

007 series, by Sir Ian Fleming (very easy read on "Casino Royale"! :) )
The Temperance Brennan/Bones collection, by forensic anthropologist and author Kathy Reichs (suspenseful and full of murder! :eek: )

I like
Beacon Street Girls series(currently 9 books in the series and one special where a girl moves to Paris for a while) it's great my best friend and I chose which girls we were and made our own BSG when we were in fifth grade, I still have all the books ^-^

And the Uglies trilogy is currently my favorite. There's Uglies, Pretties, and Specials. I still need to read Specials but the other two are never boring and always exciting.

Tough to limit them; I'm a big series fan. My latest are:

The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher ("Storm Front" is the first)

The Adam Dalgliesh mysteries by PD James ("Cover Her Face" is the first from the 60s. Her 80s books are head and shoulders better.)

The Odd Thomas series by Dean Koontz

The Guido Brunetti series by Donna Leon ("Murder at La Fenice" is the first)

... and of course, Harry Potter had his day!

"The Dark is Rising" series by Susan Cooper. Some of you in the UK may know her. I had to read "The Dark is Rising" in the 6th grade for a literary competition. "The Hobbit" came next. They made a movie recently of TDIR called "The Seeker". It was terrible. The 5 books deal with the Arthurian legend. Merriman Lyon "Uncle Merry" (Merlin) is the thread that pulls the stories of each book together. I especially like "The Dark is Rising" (Will Stanton's story) and "The Grey King". Will and Bran (an albino boy, King Arthur's son, Pendragon) team up in "The Grey King"

It's a light read for anyone over 13 years old, but I haven't seen crows "rooks" the same way since I was 11. I recommend the series to anyone who likes fantasy fiction. "LOTR" or "Chronicles" or "The Never Ending Story". Things like that.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dark_Is_Rising_Sequence

"Over Sea Under Stone" (Reminds me of "Goonies") only the best kid movie of all time!

"The Dark is Rising" (THEE book that introduced me to fantasy fiction as a kid)

"Greenwitch"

"The Grey King"

"Silver on the tree"

When the Dark comes rising, six shall turn it back;
Three from the circle, three from the track;
Wood, bronze, iron; water, fire, stone;
Five will return, and one go alone.

Iron for the birthday, bronze carried long;
Wood from the burning, stone out of song;
Fire in the candle-ring, water from the thaw;
Six Signs the circle, and the grail gone before.

Fire on the mountain shall find the harp of gold
Played to wake the Sleepers, oldest of the old;
Power from the green witch, lost beneath the sea;
All shall find the light at last, silver on the tree.

Read "Salems Lot" by Stephen King, its about a writer who moves to a small town to write his new book. At about the same time he moves to town so do two other residents(vampires to be exact). its a pretty good read, and who doesnt enjoy a good vampire novel?

Hello, I'm just looking around the rest of the boards :) Thought I'd share a few of my favorite books. :D

I've got a few favorite authors, my top 3 at the moment would have to be:

Philip Pullman:

One of my all time favorite series of books, His Dark Materials (Northern Lights, The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass). I love the rich imagination of these books and the wonderful characters, especially Lyra, Iorek Brynison and Dr. Mary Malone. All three books are such a thrill to read.
I also love the Sally Lockhart series (The Ruby in the Smoke, The Shadow in the North, The Tiger in the Well, and, not so much, The Tin Princess). Sally has become one of my favorite fictitious female characters. I love the Victorian era in which the books are set, and the wonderfully detailed depiction of Victorian life. My favorite is The Tiger in the Well. I was not so much taken by the last book in the series, The Tin Princess, as it had little Sally, but it still caught my attention enough to read through it.

Neil Gaiman:

The only books I have read of his before are Stardust, Neverwhere and American Gods, the last of which I would never usually have thought twice about reading. It's a book like no other book I've ever read, it's amazing. Neverwhere is a great read, loved the idea of London Below, and I love all the imaginative characters. I read Stardust after I saw the film, again, a brilliant but short read.

Alexander McCall Smith:

5 words: The No.1 Ladies Detective Agency! I love Precious Ramotswe! I love the Botswana setting and the wonderful depiction of South Africa and the lives the people there live. I'm on book 8, The Good Husband of Zebra Drive, at the moment. I also love the humor these books give, they're just a wonderful light and entertaining read. :D

I've also read The Twilight Saga, and The Host, by Stephenie Meyer. She's not the best writer, IMO, but I do like the stories.

Oh, and Michelle Magorian, one of my favorite childhood authors. All her books are set either during of after Second World War (Goodnight Mister Tom, Back Home, Cuckoo in the Nest, A Spoonful of Jam and Just Henry). I loved them all as a child, and still love them to this day.
