A girl claiming to be "Kara" (Adrianne Palicki) from Krypton wants to bring Clark home. The Kents learn about the deal Jonathan made with Jor-El. The Sullivans and Clark testify against Lionel, and Clark finally learns the secret of Lex's secret room. As the episode ends, it appears Chloe's gone boom, Clark's been sucked into the cave wall, Lex appears poisoned, Jonathan looks dead, and the Kent Farm is on fire...

The hair shaving scene was fantastic! Favorite scene in the history of "Smallville", or at least one of them!

My favorite Smallville finale. I loved the whole episode. There are some people who consider this to be a waste, with the acception of the last ten minutes. But for me, it was awesome the whole way through. I loved that Clark discovered he would fly, the Clark/Lex friendship ending, etc. This episode goes on my top ten list without a doubt.

The last scenes are the best for sure but I liked the rest of the episode. Martha and Clark finding out what Jonathan did was very dramatic and Chloe was awesome in this episode too. and Lex and Clark finally having there big blow up that was just waiting to happen and then Lionel....that MB!!!

I liked the scene with Clark finding the Clark-room, and I liked the last few minutes of it with the opera playing and the MB exacting his revenge, but that's about it. Commencement was a much stronger finale, IMO.

I agree . I really enjoyed commencement much more than I thought I would.

Covenant had a few good moments. The dramatic ending was brilliant (even though we all knew Chloe wouldnt die ,lex wouldnt die and Jonathan wouldnt die).

My favorite parts of this episode were EVERYTHING. I simply loved it from when we saw Kara naked in the beginning to Clark naked at the end.

Hey in this episode, was Kara Smallville's version of Supergirl? Or is it just coincidence? I guess she could return or something...?

I loved this episode for two reasons: the cliffhangers at the end and Adrianne Palicki.

I think she was. At first I thought that she was actually from krypton but than to found that she was a fraud, someone to lure Clark to Jor-el.

When this episode first aired, i remember that I was a little anticiapated at the the expectations of it just by reading the spoilers and by reading that 'Supergirl' might make an appearance. It kept me at the edge of my seat. The episode was pretty good as far as my expectation would go.

Well, I have only seen bits and pieces (various scenes) of Covenant but I loved Adrienne as Kara! And I really loved that they cast an actress who actually looked a bit liked Tom Welling in the face (same lush lips and wide face, I noticed).
My fave scene (that I saw) was in the barn when Kara was telling Clark that if he goes to the cave he'll see Lara again and then does the "kissing" thing. (Does that ever give new meaning to the term "kissing cousins"! )
I didn't care for the ending so much.
And I really didn't like the ending of the Clark/lLex friendship (how it ended I mean).
But from what I saw, a good episode.
And again Adrienne rocked!.

I thought this episode was very good! the ending was very intense and left me wanting more. I remember when I saw it when it first aired I could not wait for the beginning of season 4, but S4 was not as good as I had expected, but thats another discussion. This episode was good the only thing I did not like very much was Kara because she was pretty freaky...and ugly.

It is from Mozart's Requiem, though I can't seem to figure out which bit. I've got a track of music from the Requiem called Lacrimosa, but it doesn't feature the bombastic bit that plays when it shows the symbol burned into the field and Lex laying on his back.

Okay, I just found the actual song title -- Mozart's Reqium - Introitus

Everyones talking about the ending, but what about that beginning?? When Kara punches the car and makes it flip over her head in the air - amazing! And then when she goes to Clark's doorstep and he opens it and has that funny look on his face from seeing her naked. Even the talk with the parents afterwards was classic.

I for one loved this episode and always rewatch it. The ending was great too, and Lionel's shaving of the head was exciting (the scenes accompanied with the opera music - good directing there)

The opening sequence seemed way too drawn out. Yeah, there's a naked chick walking around; that's established within the first 20 seconds. But it feels like a solid minute of the camera teasing us with keeping us just out of focus so we don't see her entirety, or a conveniently placed tree to cover her chest. And Clark's reaction wasn't what I'd expect from a teenager; a hot, naked girl has just shown up on your doorstep and he just gave her a quick glance without a smile or shock. He almost looked as though he was expecting mail or something.
I was also disappointed that the season finale to a pretty good season essentially revolved around a meteor freak, never to be seen or heard of again.
Lionel's shaving was a great scene, definitely one of the more memorable in Smallville. I remember the first time I watched it, as I watched Lex pour his drink, I thought, "Lex Luthor". From everything that happened in the episode to him (the decision to let his father die slowly in prison without remorse, the end of Clark's friendship, his ambiguous motive for helping Lana), it looked as though he was ready to break away from his father and start his empire alone.
Upon viewing the whole season, it makes season 4 seem so much more of a waste. SPOILER OF SEASON 5 BELOW:

This episode would've been the opportune time to end Clark and Lex's friendship entirely, break up Clark and Lana permanently, kill of Jonathan Kent, and even... (shudder) start Lexana since they're so desperate to go down that road. Once Clark was sucked into the cave wall, he could've just gotten the crystal to create the Fortress of Solitude, have Chloe watching the whole thing out of curiosity of Jonathan's enigmatic request and discover his secret then.

I LOVED the symbolism of the ending scene. The way the hair represented Lionel's old life-his life as a powerful, ruthless business man-being sheded. He's now becoming a full-blown, evil killer. His hair represents the pretense of his past, the mask he wore, being stripped away. Also, his pride being stripped, now he's in prison. No longer the powerful man on the outisde world.

I also loved the fact the the producers/music editors used Mozart's Requiem ("Introtoius") for the final five minutes. It's a testement to the show's strength that they can actually use OPERA in a TEEN show for the LAST EPISODE OF THE SEASON and be able to captivate the audience. A TEEN audience. Being captivated by opera. It's fantastic. I think the producers really know that their show is far more than the average teen drama, and much more epic.

This season finale was really Lionel's MB best, his moment to shine. John Glover did fantastic making Lionel such a creepy villain in this one, and at the same time, still managed to get a teeny tiny bit of sympathy from us, in his scene with Lex when he said, "As a father I...I have failed you. I realize that now, and I'm sorry."

Michael Rosenbaum was great as well, playing the tortured emotional state Lex was in when he had to keep his dad behind bars. You could see he was struggling with letting Lionel die in prison, but then he turned cold and decided not to care. He decided not to let emotion get in the way, like Lionel always taught him. Season three really showed a different side to Lex. Not necessarily evil. But more ruthless than before.

Tom Welling was great as well. He had so much to work with, the flying, the fight scene with Lex, the heartbreaking final moments seeing Lana, and he sold it all. You really want to cry for him in this episode.

Everyone else was at the top of their game as well. Overall, it's not the BEST Smallville season finale (that would go to "Commencement" in my opinion), but still, it had many inspired, thought-provoking moments, especially the end, which was my favorite Smallville scene ever (the look on JG's face when his head is shaven and he says, "Thank you," is like the Lex Luthor of the comics...it's so evil, it's priceless).

I finally got to see this episode in it's entirety and basically I still feel the same as I did before.
It was great! Adrienne was wonderful as Kara (I loved the "she's my cousin" line; very cool!), the ending was great, it was just a cool episode.

(SEASON FIVE SPOILER WARNING-DON'T LOOK IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE 100th EPISODE YET)

Last Man of Krypton,

I know what you're saying, but I think if they had Clark and Lex become enemies over something like that it wouldn't have been right. I don't think it was the right time for them to totally drift apart. I think they handled it better by putting them together again for one final season, showing us that they DID try to repair things, but things were never the same between them. I liked the slow, gradual turn from friends to adversaries a lot better than just a single moment causing them to ultimately part ways.

As for Lana, yeah, I agree on that one. It would've been nice to see the Clana end permenently. Although, I must admit, I did like seeing Clark and Lana happy for a while this season together, even though we knew it wouldn't last. Their relationship also helped play a role with the 100th episode storyline.

The death of Jonathan should not have been their in the caves. I understand what you're saying, but again, I feel that would be rushing things. I think it was better to show another season with Jonathan in it. But I do think, though, that they should've given Jonathan some more material in Season Four. He didn't have a whole lot to do. It would've been better to have given him a more pivotal role in his last full season.

I was in shock too. I remember watching in suspense. When Lionel said, "Do it," to the guard, I was like, "What the heck?" and then thinking, "What's this? They're playing opera! Cool!" and then when his head started getting shaved I was like, "WHAT?" and then Chloe blowing up I remember thinking, "Oh my God! That's so sad. But if she had to die, it's best at Lionel's hands. Cuz he is the true villain right now. Man, he is EVIL!" Then the shot with him with his bald scalp saying, "Thank you," was so classically evil. It was awesome!

Does anyone feel like season 3 finale could have been a great episode to stop at?

Let's see.....

1) Chloe died in a explosion

2)Jonathon died trying to save his son

3)Lionel spends the rest of his life in jail

4)Clark finds out that his friendship with Lex was just a lie

5) Lana travels around the world

6)Jor-el finally gets Clark to start his journey to become Superman

7) Martha stays at home by herself

^It could have been a series finale... except for the fact that Lex is dead. And Clark still didn't have super breath... LOL!

I really enjoyed the finale as I recently re-watched it. I really saw the through-line of the season clearly. Jonathan made a bargain with Jor-el to get Clark back and at the end Jor-el collected on that bargain.

I loved the nod to supergirl... and the actress who played Kara was wonderful. She was good in the Aquaman pilot as Nadia also.

I'm still confused as to who Kara was. Perhaps her essence went into the preserved body of the dead girl. But it's confusing. I don't think it was Jor-el using the body to trick Clark. I really think the person speaking through Kara was a Kryptonian... and a separate one from Jor-el.

The bad part about it is that a lot of the suspense comes from not knowing what is going to happen. None of the events are very dramatic in and of themselves... Unlike three tornadoes, or a huge explosion or a meteor shower which are fun to watch... Though there was the safe-house explosion. So knowing what's going to happen at the beginning of season 4 sort of diffuses this finale. But it was the best cliffhanger of all the finales... except for the end of Season 5. :)

Hi All. Lemme just say I'm very glad I fount this place, I felt so alianated knowing no one who shared my passion from Smallville. Mind you, I only watch it on DVDs and have not yet seen anything beyond season 3, which I just finished. What a POWERFUL ending that was!!!!

As to this episode - absolutely loved it, however, I think Clark overeacted at Lex after having seen the lab in which Lex's research on Clark was all stored. Big deal, I mean Clark is aware is's not human, does he really expect Lex to lay off?

And VERy dissapointed Clark did not tell Lana about himself. The whole thing with Peter getting beat up by FBI and moving to Witchita was just an excuse to keep Lana out.

That was Mozart's Requiem. They played most of Introitus.

Anyways, I liked this episode but the season 4 premier was a real let down. I still dislike how they don't acknowledge where the hell Clark was for three months & what happened to him. How did Swan know what black kryptonite would do. Where did he get it in the first place? Why can't Clark fly even though he knew he was able to as Kal-el?

Lionel, our dear MB, excellent as usual. When he plays an important role in an episode, he steals the show!

What did I think of Covenant?

I liked this episode a lot, because it gave clues that Clark Kent will become the future Super-Man. Especially from some of the quotes that Kara has mentioned. There are 5 reasons why I loved this episode. They are:

1) Kara's quotes that describes Clark as the future SuperMan:

A) A passage in the cave wall: "A place where all your questions will be answered, where you don't have to hide your true self."

B) Kara: "I will show Kal-El all he needs to see in due time."

Clark: "Where did you hear that name?"

Kara: "It was given to you at birth."

C) Clark (to Kara): "I can't fly."

Kara: "Not yet. This is just the beginning, Kal-El. You have no idea how powerful you'll become."

(Kara mentions Clark's birth father, Jor-El).

Kara (talking about Jor-El): "He's not the monster that you imagined. He saved your life. You may think you know your destiny, Kal-el. But you have no idea what greatness lies ahead of you."

2) The Clex Scenes: Clark and Lex

Clark and Lex have a discussion about Lex's father going to prison. Lex tells Clark he needs an eyewitness. Clark volunteers to help Lex out. I loved their conversation.

Lex: "In order to deny him (Lionel) bail, Clark, they/the jury need eyewitnesses, people who have seen my father actually inflict harm. Unfortunately, anyone who's been privy to his darkest moments is either dead or unwilling to come forward."

Clark: I'll come forward."

Lex: "I appreciate your support, Clark, but they need an eyewitness."

Clark: "I saw him at Belle Reve. I saw him order the doctor to increase your electroshock voltage. Even when the doctor said it could turn you into a vegetable."

Lex: "How could you have seen that?"

Clark: "I snuck in to try to save you, but I was too late."

Lex: "You knew all along my father murdered his parents, didn't you? And you never told me. I always assumed there was a tacit agreement among friends to share that kind of information with each other."

Clark: "Not when it could get your friend killed. Lex, your father threw you into a mental institution and fried your brain. If you found that out all over again, I thought he might kill you, and I couldn't live with that."

Lex: "You're a good friend, Clark. If you tell the judge what you just told me, my father will be exchanging his Armani for an orange jumpsuit."

Clark (smiling at Lex): "I'll be there. You can count on it."

(What a great friend Clark is to Lex! Who wouldn't want to be Clark's friend, especially when he has the power to rescue you. This is one of the best transcripts from Covenant).

3) The Jonathan & Martha scene:

(This is one of the best Annette O'Toole performances from Covenant. One of her best acts. I liked her in Heat, when she got into an argument with Lex and defended her son, Clark, but Covenant is one of her best performances. Especially when she says to Jonathan, her husband):

Martha (to Jonathan): "What have you invited into our lives?"

Martha (furious): "How could you make a decision like that about our son without talking to me?! Jonathan, why would you keep it a secret? Do you really think Jor-El will ever give up on Clark?"

Jonathan: "I can't just sit idly by while he tries to take away our son!"

Martha: "Well, we might not have a choice! That girl is more powerful than Clark!"

(Excellent performance, Annette O'Toole).

4) Lionel Luthor's sense of humor:

I loved the scene where Clark comes up to Lionel, holds up a key, and says to Lionel, "What is this?"

Lionel was hilarious when he answered Clark, "A key. Unfortunately, not the one we're both looking for."

(I didn't know John Glover had an excellent sense of humor. Not only is John Glover a superb actor, but he also has a wonderful sense of humor. Something that very few John Glover fans ever recognize on Smallville).

5) The Clex Scene (Clark & Lex, once again)

I loved this scene, because Clark Kent gets mad at his best friend, Lex Luthor. Lex goes behind Clark's back by investigating him. Clark finds out about it, and gets angry at Lex. I loved Tom Welling's performance. It is one of his best. Great job, Tom Welling. You should be proud of yourself.

Lex: "Before you jump to conclusion, Clark --"

Clark (Angry at Lex): "You told me you stopped investigating me!"

Lex: "I did."

Clark: "You did? Then what is this?"

Lex: "I understand how you can think all this is about you. But, in fact, it's about me."

Clark (disagreeing with Lex): "More lies."

Lex: "There's so much of my own life I can't explain. I've survived countless brushes with death, and it all started with this car crash. If I'm guilty of anything, it's that I've inherited my father's eccentric curiosity for the unexplained."

Clark: "You've inherited his dishonesty."

Lex: "Clark, look me in the eye and tell me you don't have any hidden places of your own where you keep your deep, dark secrets."

Clark: Ever since I've met you, I've been defending you, making excuses for you to people like Pete, like my parents. Telling them, 'You can trust Lex Luthor. He's a good guy. He's nothing like his father.' I was wrong. (Clark walks away).

(Great performance, Tom Welling)!

Later on, at the courthouse, Clark walks over to Lex and says, "I didn't come here for you, Lex. I came because it's the right thing to do. This friendship is over!"

In my opinion, weakest season final yet. The whole Clark/Lex friendship ending thing was dramatic, but not dramatic enough. Honestly, their friendship has been so important for three seasons, and we know Lex will be his greatest enemy, so when their friendship ends, that's BIG. I always wondered when and how it was going to end, and they could have made so much more of it. I mean, Clark discovering that room (and honestly, that's not SO bad. Clark always knew Lex was curious about him), and then one fight and then just 'this friendship's over'. Totally not enough and completely dissatisfying. It would have been way better if Lex had done something really bad (like preparing to have blood taken from Clark regularly and sell it since it can resurrect people, and then Clark finds out - that would have been my suggestion), so Lex should have done something horriblee that should involve making money and power with Clark's powers, and then Clark would have had reason to get really angry, and there should have been a huge dramatic showdown when their friendship finally breaks.

And that scene with Lana at the airport was amazingly done, but the story behind it was not too great. Why would Clark drop that rose and leave?? Lana was just hugging a friend good bye. It wasn't like she did anything wrong by talking nicely to Lex. She didn't even know Lex was investigating Clark. Honestly, that's no reason to leave without even saying good bye.

yeah, I'm taking back what I said on the Clark/Lex final being too weak. I mean, it was, but I'm almost ten episodes into the fourth season now and I realized that it was, after all, not the end of Clark's and Lex' friendship, so the REAL falling apart is apparently yet to come, so that would make what I said about the end of the friendship being to weak not valid.

The ending of Covenent is still the best one of the series, but everytime i watch this episode i feel sick because Lana should of knowed CK's secret before she goes to Paris. It would have saved Lana from being so hated from everyone because of her "trust" issues.... Well i think its from there that Lana became an inconsitant character because of how they wrote her.

I'm re watching the series from season 1 - the present day episodes and I just finished watching this one yesterday. WHOA! I totally loved this episode. Clark decides to end his friendship with Lex, Lana leaves Smallville forever (well...for a few months), and Jor-El finally gets Jonathan's end of the deal: that Kal-El would one day return to him. I can't wait to experience "Crusade" again. I can still remember how cool it was.

This episode should have marked the final appearance by Lana. It would have been a great way to finish her storyline (better then the way it was done in "Requim"). Lana goes of the art school in France and stays there. Then Clark meets Lois in the first episode of season 4 and we'd get a development towards a relationship between those two over the next couple of seasons (rather then having another five seasons of Clark running after Lana).

I'm giving this episode a nine. It's my favorite episode of the whole series. But, the reason I'm not giving it a ten is because I dislike several things in the episode;

1) The revelation about Lindsey Harrison at the end of the episode. It's just stupid. So, somehow Chloe's been able to get the prints on the cup matched to an underage girl (which would then mean, that her file should be sealed), who was cought shoplifting 16 years earlier and is believed to have been killed in 1989, when her mother's car took a direct hit from a meteor, which surely would have destroyed Lindsey's body. Also, there is no way Jor-El could have brought her into the cave wall.

2) Clark seeing Lex and Lana and thinking there could possibly be something between them. Despite the fact that she's 17 and he's like 25 or something, which would make a relationship between Lex and Lana at this point in time illegal.

3) That this wasn't the final appearance by Lana Lang. Like I've stated above, this could have made a great exit.

4) Lindsey/Kara killing the FBI agent. Why did she do that? Kryptonians have proven to be able to erase memories, through technology. Why didn't she just grab Loder, fly him to the cave and have Jor-El erase all knowledge he has about Clark?

This episode should have marked the final appearance by Lana. It would have been a great way to finish her storyline (better then the way it was done in "Requim"). Lana goes of the art school in France and stays there. Then Clark meets Lois in the first episode of season 4 and we'd get a development towards a relationship between those two over the next couple of seasons (rather then having another five seasons of Clark running after Lana).

Yes,this could be good Lanaending I think ;) .

... Why did she do that? Kryptonians have ...
She probably wasn't a kryptonian :)
Jonathan says something like "Jor-el availed her .. " I think she was usual human (freak?) ...

No, she was a human, who was granted Kryptonian powers from Jor-El. Her powers were not the result of meteor infection.

I rewatched this episode, earlier today and it got me thinking:

This episode could have been an epic, in Smallville's history; Lana leaving the show and starting a new life in France, while Clark has his first encounter, with another person, who's destined to become a super hero (if Kara/Lindsey really had been either Supergirl or Power Girl). But, sadly, this wasn't the case. Lana returned in the following season (honestly, if AlMiles needed a love interest for Clark, they could have introduced a new female character and hold back Lois. After all, in the comics, Clark's not just dated Lana and Lois, but also several other women, they could have brought in one of them, or created a brand new character, for the show, to eventually become a love interest during season four and during the college years. But, then the show would have risked to lose the Clana fans, which they simply didn't dare do) and "Kara" was revealed to just be a brainwashed girl with Kryptonian powers, in the last few minutes of the episode, who mere moments later vanished in a bright flash of light (presumably dying). Thinking about it, the whole revelation about "Kara" as Lindsey Harrison, might have actually marked the begining of the show going down hill (what do you think?).

I just watched this episode and I was literally blown away!
The best part was the ending scene. Chloe and her father being blown up, Clark joining Jor-El, the whole Kara/Lindsey thing, which was al led by Mozart's Requim, which was absolutely brilliant by the way!
For me, this was the best season finale, along with Exodus, Commencement and Vessel.
But I have a question though. I know Chloe will survive, but does her father? I never seen him or heard about him after that.

We saw him being saved, together with Chloe, in "Gone", but since then he's been missing without a trace. He wasn't around in "Tomb", when Chloe was believed to have tried to kill herself (nor mentioned, kinda odd seeing how Lex tried to have Chloe commited to Belle Reve, something only a next of kind can do), nor did he attend his daugther's High School graduation or her wedding.

Good episode. Loved the scene with Lana leaving. Such a beautiful song they used. Also liked the ending with Lionel getting his hair shaved off, Martha seeing the fire in the field, Chloe blowing up, Lex getting poisoned, Jonathan unconscious in the cave, Clark doing as Jor-El tells him to... etc.

Am getting kinda sick of Lionel's music taste though lol

Covenant was one of the best season finales as a turning point was made between Clark and Lex over Lex's investigations of him while a fake Kara appears from the caves. This was foreshadowing of bringing in the real Kara in the 7th season. Lana leaves to go to France and her exit should have been left with this. After Clark was sucked into the dimensional void, the episode had one of the best cliffhangers ever with 3-4 things going on at the exact same time with Clark at the center - Lex poisoned by drink, Chloe and her father caught in the explosion, Jonathan unconscious at the cave, and Martha investigating another symbol at the yard of the Kent Farm. I had wondered how they were going to resolve these cliffhangers as this would show the mark of great TV writers and storytellers.
Unfortunately, a short cut would be used instead.

I liked the end but the rest of the episode fell short for me. I don't think there was enough there to get Clark to get so angry at Lex. I mean Lex is probably the most honest person b/w seasons 1-3. Even though he hides things, he eventually tells his friends if there's a possibility of losing their friendship or love. He is so open to Clark when he has problems and needs his help, always telling him straight up what's going on.

This episode kind of makes Clark look like a giant hypocrite because he lies to people from episode to episode and not only about his powers. Clark never relates himself to others that also have secrets to hide, which makes him seem like a hollow person.

Lex has done so much for him, for his friends and family, but won't even give Lex a chance to explain his reasons for having that "room". He also doesn't even see off Lana at the airport just b/c Lex is there. I really don't get that. The writters could have done a much better job on Clark's character in this episode, and pretty much through this entire season.

In case anyone is interested in a little fun read about the ending montage, I wrote a paper for a Television/Film class about it. The topic in question is "Montage" so I decided to write it about my all-time favorite montage, the one at the end of this episode:

"
“Smallville”
A Montage Analysis
Montages have always been one of my favorite aspects of film as a director and as an editor, and one sequence in particular from the TV series “Smallville” continues to inspire me throughout the years: it is my favorite montage ever filmed. A brief background: “Smallville” is the television show about a young Clark Kent becoming Superman while a young Lex Luthor turns from best friend to worst nemesis. A huge contributing factor in Lex’s turn to the dark side is his mentally abusive, corporate titan father, Lionel Luthor. In the scene we are about to explore, Lionel has finally been arrested for the decades-old homicide of his parents. Lex worked together with trusted ally Chloe to put Lionel away. So Lionel masterminds their attempted murders, in true “Godfather”-esque style…
Now for the montage: I will analyze it for its excellent choice of shots (and music combined). It is filmed in all slow-motion. I will analyze the key shots of the montage. It begins with a man entering Lionel’s jail cell. “Do it,” Lionel says. The opening track from “Mozart’s Requiem” cues as the man pulls Lionel’s long mane of hair back. The music instantly signifies something ominous and larger-than-life is about to occur. Cut to: Chloe stepping out of an FBI van with her father. She is in witness protection. Back and forth to Lionel: a buzzer is coming towards his hair, ready to shave it off. Then to Lex Luthor, having a large drink of Brandi in his mansion. Then to Lionel as the buzzer is shaving his hair. This cut back and forth to Lex and then to his father having his hair shaved is beautifully symbolic: Lex Luthor throughout the series has always been bald, which is his iconic image from the comic books, while Lionel has always had very long hair. The cuts between the two, between father and son, suggests their symbiosis: Lex and Lionel will someday be synonymous in their villainy, despite how much Lex fights against it. However, while the cuts parallel the two, the lighting suggests their differences: Lionel with stark shadows on his face and Lex mostly shot in light. Lex is not his father yet although the darkness will eventually take over.
Back to Chloe and her father as they enter the safehouse the FBI has taken them to. Cut to: a piece of Lionel’s hair falling into his lap. Then back to the safehouse as it explodes. Then back to Lionel, mostly bald now, camera closing in on him.
Back to Lex as he grasps his throat, realizing he’s been poisoned. He falls to the ground. A quick insert of Lionel’s hair falling to the ground at the same time. It seems as each piece of his hair falls, another shot of violence occurs around the same time, just like the hair falling before Chloe’s house exploded. The hair seems to suggest Lionel’s last shreds of humanity (or his pretenses of humanity when he was a respected public figure) being stripped away.
Finally as the montage comes to a close, Lionel feels his now bald head; Requiem crescendos and he thanks the barber.
This montage is incredibly akin to Eisenstein’s montages. Eisenstein believed that the “shock” factor one could use in montages was key. This is part of why he preferred montage to mise-en-scene because it could tell multiple stories at once and do so in ways that could really make the audience be shocked and in suspense. “Smallville” uses Eisenstein’s idea of shock to perfection, and his idea of telling multiple stories at once. This montage was in the season three finale of “Smallville”, so it took Eisenstein’s advice to heart that montages could effectively tell so many different stories in just a few minutes that otherwise would take hours longer to tell.
Ultimately, this is one of my top two favorite scenes in “Smallville” ever, and it is most definitely my favorite montage to ever be put to film. In case you’re interested in seeing it in all its majesty, here is a link to the scene: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eNSlPRHA-6M"
