this one of the few very well made season 4 episodes, michael rosenbaum did great at playing evil lex! and when he dropped the lab on clark and chloe and he sees clark lift it up, evil lex's face is so funny. and the part where he shot JK in the leg was shocking because i really didn't expect that. this episode rocks!!!!

That was funny when he shot Jonathan because he said 'Before somehing bad happens *bam* 'like that'
I suppose I'll be in the minority that didn't like this episode. It's not horrible on the level of Spell or anything, it's just not that good. Oh, yay, we get to see the psycho that Lex will one day become (which anyone who knew this show was based on Superman already knew, but hey) and how did Jonathan explain the gunshot wound to the doctor without telling the doctor who shot him? Of course, by the following week there wasn't a wound to speak of so who knows.
And Clark saved Chloe without a scratch on him and Chloe's all "hey how'd you... ah, big deal, nevermind" about it.
EvilLex was a bit too over the top at times. Yeah, the future Lex Luthor is EVIL, but he's not crazy.

I've probably seen Onyx more times than any other S4 episode. My favorite scene is the Clex loft scene with Lex hitting Clark with the greenk ring, and then the scene outside the house where he shoots Jonathan and says, "I am the villain of the story". Great acting by Michael.

Just saw the episode two nights ago (Friday night) and it was great. That scene with the green K ring was awesome. Loved it.

By far the best episode of Smallville, Clark gets it handed to him, lex's banter was the best of the series, Lex showed no fear of Clark which is so true to the original character. Michael is the only Lex of our time.

I liked it very much. But I wish *evil lex* was a bit more subdued. I liked the ring very much. I was confused, though. After he says 'I am the villain in the story,' the Kents wind up at the hospital. There's no resolution to that scene. He just walks out ? A bit strange.
Not a bad episode, though. Like I said, despite a head-scratching moment, I liked it very much. I think, for the most part, TPTB have been REAL successful with the Lex story, and MR's performance is a HUGE part of that.

My #1 favorite episode out of season 4 and in a sort of light hearted season this episode and the few other darker ones mixed in nicely. "I am the villain of this story." Rosenbaum gets all the good lines :).

The line "I am the villain of the story" is weird since in "Talisman" we found out that Lex believes himself to be the hero when dealing with Superman

Did you guys realize (And I'm sure you did) that in the older comics, the Kryptonite ring was the reason for Lex Luthor's hair falling out?
I was so excited when I saw this. I love the idea of Lex's hair loss having something to do with Kryptonite...in the newer stories it's because of a fire, granted he was working on an experiment involving Green K, but it's just not the same.
I loved when he's holding the gun to the Kents and Clark gets up and he just turns his hand and exposes the ring. What a great villain he was in this episode.
Just think...in the future, he will be so much worse! This evil, but with the intellect of the other, or "good" Lex; plus, better motives...

I love that line in 'Talisman.' It's Lex's justification for trying to defeat Superman in the future. The most dangerous people are the people who think they're doing good.
And Lex is right, in a sense. If Superman doesn't have someone to keep him in check what's to prevent him from taking over the world and enslaving all of us? Power corrupts and absolute power corrupt absolutely. I like the idea that the bad guy will protect us from the good guy. It's so twisted.
In 'Onyx' Evil Lex (does he ever call himself "Alexander?") doesn't need to justify his actions. Evil is its own justification.

The Kryptonite ring wasn't the reason Lex's hair fell out. It was because of a lab explosion. The kryptonite ring was presented in the post-Crisis comics and was the reason that Lex had cancer.

One of my favs, not just of the season, but of the entire show. LOVED the foreshadowing. Great stuff. Michael's acting is fantastic, especially at the end, after Lionel says, "We're Luthors", Lex's face goes effortlessly from concern and fright to a spine-chillingly sadistic grin. I don't know how he does it. You barely even notice the transformation on his face. Now THAT is good acting. I wonder if they teach you how to do that in acting school or if MR is just naturally that good.
The only thing I didn't get, which I'd love if someone could answer, is why Evil Lex looked a bit concerned after he shot Jonathan. If you watch it, you notice a slight look of dismay or frustration. Isn't evil Lex just evil, to the core? No good at all? So why would he look discontent? Unless he was just pissed to be wasting bullets. :)

The sessessioned Lex revealed what Lex was scheming about Clark, chloe and all the people around him. The sessessioned Lex is the real lex, just like what he said he is the villain in the storyline and the fatal character in the Smallville. Chloe cannot rival him in spite of her excellent snoopy techniques. Clark is still overpowered by What lex is contemplating about!!!!!!!!

I had heard about this episode and went into it ready for cheesiness.
I got it.
But I have to say that the special effects were very well done. In all those scenes with both Lex's I never once thought "wow, does that look fake!". In fact, I was often surprised at how seemless it looked.
Too bad the writing wasn't better.
There were a few good points.
The debut of the Green K ring.
Clark actually saying "black K". Very cool.
The line "I am the villian of the story" and Lex shooting Jon. That was good.
There was a possible plot hole in this episode. Lex says that he used to play in that basement or whatever in the mansion as a kid. Yet, in the Pilot both Lex and Clark mention that the castle was shipped over from Scotland 'brick by brick' and that Lionel had never 'set foot in the door'.
Now I suppose it is possible that Lillian brought Lex to the castle without Lionel but I thought that the castle wasn't moved to Smallville until after Lillian had died. Perhaps one of Lex's nannies brought him?

while I do enjoy the "I am the villian of the story" line,my fav from lex in this episode came at the end. When he was fightin hisself the lines "U can't kill me,I drive u,I give ur life meanin,I'm ur soul u weak pathetic little man" aw just classic. This is really the episode that got me hooked on sv,I started watchin a few episode of s4 and thought it was straight. But after this episode I had to go back and catchup lol, this episode made me a fan for life.Lex has always been one of my characters and seein this/potential was great MR owned this episode. He had alot of good lines in this, but that last fight scene just stood out to me more. And I just thought about what Welling is pretty stated,ur right he does say they played there as kids but in the pilot he does say they shipped it over brick by brick(Meanin they built it after it reached sv).Other than that tho this episode was flawless

Lex with the kryptonite ring and the gun was just priceless -- how easily he was able to control and manipulate Clark with it and with his fear of losing his parents. Very cool.

And his aim was on something else in 'Whisper' and the Green-K got in the way. so the focus was misdirected.

What did I think of Onyx?
There are only 3 scenes that I liked about it. One with the Lionel Luthor and the Good Lex Luthor. And the other one was the scene with Clark Kent and the Good Lex Luthor. The 3rd reason I loved this episode are Michael Rosenbaum's lines from the episode Onyx. Here they are:
1) Lionel and Lex
Lionel: Lex, I haven't forgotten. I know I'm not welcome here...but I heard there was an accident at Luthorcorp...and I wanted to be sure you're all right.
Good Lex: I'm fine, Dad. Thanks for the concern.
Lionel: Well, I am grateful you are all in one piece. I am sorry for the intrusion.
Good Lex: Dad, are you still planning on your charity fundraiser Saturday?
Lionel: Yes. I must say it's quite an interesting challenge...trying to get the deep pockets to show up at the salad bar and ginger chicken.
Good Lex: Would it help if the head of Luthorcorp promised to make an appearance?
Lionel: Really? You'd do that?
Good Lex: Under 1 condition. You hold the event on the top floor of Luthorcorp Plaza in Metropolis. I'll even reach out to a few of those reluctant deep pockets.
Lionel: That's very generous of you.
Good Lex: You must be rubbing off on me. I admit, I had my doubts about the motives behind your sudden philanthropy...but I can see how much joy helping the less fortunate is bringing you. Dad I'm...I'm proud of you.
Lionel: Thank you, Lex. I am truly grateful for everything.
(What I liked about this scene was how the real Lex Luthor treated his father, Lionel Luthor. He was so sweet and kind to his father. This is the best scene of Lex & Lionel, because it shows how much they care about each other. For example, Lionel Luthor tells Lex, "I heard there was an accident at Luthorcorp, and I wanted to make sure you're all right, Lex." Lex kindly responds with, "I'm fine, Dad. Thanks for your concern." My favorite quote of Lex Luthor is: "You must be rubbing off on me, Dad. I admit, I had my doubts about the motives behind your sudden philanthropy, but I can see how much joy helping the less fortunate is bringing you. Dad I'm... I'm proud of you." That is the most nicest thing Lex Luthor has ever said to his Dad, Lionel Luthor. I wish Smallville would have more nice scenes of Lex Luthor and Lionel Luthor. But unfortunately, Lex Luthor will never be his kind old self again. The powers to be will make sure Lex will no longer be the nice guy that he used to be. That's why I really enjoyed this episode).
2) Clark and the Good Lex Luthor
Good Lex: Clark...I want to say thank you for saving me...but the words seem too small. Without you, I would have been lost. You're a true friend.
Clark: It's too bad your other half didn't think so.
Good Lex: I'm sorry what I---what he put you through.
Clark: It's okay, Lex. It wasn't really you.
Good Lex: That's what I've been trying to figure out. Did the accident (explosion) create an evil Lex....or is that what's really inside of me?
(Here again is good Lex Luthor and good old Clark Kent in this scene. Again Lex Luthor is being kind to Clark Kent and saying nice words such as "Clark, I want to say thank you for saving me, but the words seem too small. I would have been lost. You're a true friend. I'm sorry what I -- what he put you through."
Clark kindly excuses him by saying, "It's okay, Lex. It wasn't really you."
Lex Luthor begins to have doubts and wonders, "Did the accident or explosion create an evil Lex... or is that what's really inside of me?"
3) I loved Michael Rosenbaum's lines from the episode Onyx:
Clark: What are you?
Evil Lex: I was just about to ask you the same question. I dropped half the lab on you and Miss Sullivan...and yet here you stand.
Clark: I was lucky.
Evil Lex: Don't be modest, Clark, we both know you're much more than that. It all makes sense now. That first day on the bridge when we met, how you were able to save me when my car went into the river. All of the other miraculous times you appeared, in just the right place at just the right moment...almost as if you possessed powers and abilities beyond those of mortal men. You've lied to me for years, Clark. But now I know your secret.
Clark: I don't know what you're talking about.
(It was very interesting to hear Michael, I mean Lex Luthor bring up Clark Kent's secret. Everything that Lex Luthor had said about Clark Kent was the honest-to-God truth. Especially the part with, "...almost as if you possessed powers and abilities beyond those of mortal men. You've lied to me for years, Clark. But now I know your secret." I love it when Lex, Chloe, Lana, or even Lionel tried for years to figure out Clark's secret. If I had known Clark as a friend, I would never be smart enough to figure that Clark had secrets. This is what makes Smallville and Clark Kent interesting. People trying to figure out his secret.
Michael Rosenbaum played an excellent part in this episode Onyx. Michael plays the good Lex and the bad Lex, and he did a wonderful job playing both, even though Michael made a lot of noise screaming while playing bad Lex. This is one of Michael's finest acts on Smallville. I wish Michael got an Emmy Award for playing Lex Luthor on Smallville. I wish Michael all the best).

Just saw this episode and Micheal Rosenbaums acting is absolutely superb. He plays Lex with such an understated intensity. Reminds me of Pacino in Godfather 2.
The other line I liked was in the barn after Lex knows Clark's secret,
Clark: "Your'e not a man, I'm no even sure your'e human!"
Lex:" Hmmm, are you?"

This episode, Tempest, and Lexmas are the triumvirate episodes of Lex Luthor's fall into vicious confused super villainy. We can see how the ends will one day justify any means, and eventually the ends will be forgotten altogether.
Watching the brains of the cast get bent around kryptonite so many times you get an understanding of the writers opinions of the various mental problems these people have.
This episode confirmed for me that Lex has Self Narrative Dramatitus. In other words - spends way too much time thinking about "the story" that he is living in for his own good.
Brought on obviously by the perpetuated cycle of abuse that the Luthor family suffers from in general. A common reactionary mechanism for those that suffer such absurd mental abuse. Particularly without the physical abuse.
The problem being (the titus if you will) that if you lose sight of a happy ending. If you embrace the tragedy of your life as the way things are supposed to be, and can no longer see anything good in life at all.. except the belief that maybe a little more power can change things.
And facing the truth of his own editorial is how Lex became the hero of the tragedy called Smallville. His flaw - believing that he has no choice but to be a villain. He accepted the fact that he is just like his unrepentant father and that will never change.

That's true, but it only backfired into his eyes earlier because the heat hit the greenk at a perfect angle to send it back at him. Even though it was not shown, a throwaway explanation is that the greenk reflected it at a different angle somewhere else. Just a thought.

I was watching this episode for the second time and I really enjoyed it, but it got me thinking, what if, when Lex and Alexander had been fighting, Lex had been wearing the Green K ring when Clark heated it up?
Maybe Lex would have left the "dominant" personality traits and ended up being generally a nicer person, where as Alexander could have left the "dominant" traits and Lex becomes (or is becoming) a darker more malevolent person.

This is my first time on here and with good reasons I start of by discussing Onyx as it's my favourite episode of the entire series. I'm going to base most of my discussions on MR and Lex Luthor because the reality is that he makes the show what it is even when he's involved very little in certain episodes. He's the most important character that brings about the most intriguing, gripping and tragic storylines. He's story is really a tragedy despite being rich and everything else that others dream of. You end up liking both good and to a certain extent "bad" lex.
I have to say MR's portrayal of Lex Luthor is probably the best acting I've seen. I'm not even ashamed to put him along side some of my heroes such as Al Pacino in the Godfather and Scarface. There is something very intriguing about this character, a cool, sinister and unpredictable personality. There is so much depth to his character. I mean MR can play good/bad/funny, not even a slight weakness to his performance. Ok I'm judging MR on one defining role in his career but his performances were so special, u just gotta admire it.
When I first watched Smallville coming from the UK, I thought this was going to be another one of those over the top, cheesy, cartoonish shows (I hated the movies..they suck!). Then to my big surprise after watching several episodes and then all the seasons, I found myself admiring a brilliantly executed intelligent storyline. The idea was soo clever and the key to that is the character development throughout each season and no better example than MR's portrayal of Lex Luthor.
If you want to know how good an actor MR is, watch the following episodes:
Shattered/Asylum
Onyx
Lexmas
Descent
Fracture
Memoria
Commencement
Mortal (simply bcuz of that classic scene at end with Clark and Lex).....
....among others....
On to Onyx...basically this episode has absolutely everything. MR protrayal of the good and evil Lex reminds alot of Pacino in the Godfather 2. The story was brilliantly delivered much like the whole series. We get to see in my opinion the best character on the show, where we get glimpse of evil Lex. You can see it in his eyes particularly in season 4 that Lex is heading towards darkness. I think begining of season 3 is what really triggered the whole downward spiral into darkness when he was left betrayed by his first real love..Helen.
My 2nd favourite character is John Glover's character Lionel. He's been so unpredictable and it's always good to see the old lionel back no thanks to evil lex for giving him a wake up call. In the end the last scene with Lex gave me the chills..watching those classic expressions on his face change into a somewhat evil grin..happy to see the old lionel back. Evil Lex is still alive and kicking!. The good Lex is still with us for now! (until we reach end of season 4). Ofcourse let us no forget some of the classic LEx lines in this episode especially near the end. Like some ppl have said on here it brough a chill down my spine..."You were right about me all along Mr Kent.....I am the villain of the story!" WOW MR Brilliant performance!
AMAZING EPISODE!!

Huge inconsistency in this episode. In Season 1 Lex tells Clark that Lionel has never set foot into the mansion at that point. Yet in this episode before Evil Lex puts the mask on Good Lex, he says that he would take him down there and the door would lock on him after Lionel told him not to go down there. What do you think??

Not an inconsistency at all. Lex was referring to the mansion after it had been moved, stone by stone, to Smallville, I imagine.

This was one of the few gems in season 4. This episode marked a point in the season when I finally started liking the episodes on a more consistent basis, except for Ageless of course.

'IT'S GOOD TO BE THE KING'
Great line
For those who might be into poetic philosophy when Lex is recombined, the "real" Lex is dressed in "good Lex's" clothing (White shirt, black pants). I'd like to look at that as a sign of who the "real" Lex was but we all know that certainly was not the case. Could we add this point in time as one of the many times we could consider the "beginning" of the Superman's arch enemy?
He thinks sageeth must be a hero to face naman. There isnt even a superman yet. What show have you been watching...
Came to post this. Lex believes Sageeth may be the hero because of the sacrifices he'll be forced to make to face Naman. It has nothing to do with Superman.

The admin Separated them so we can refer Lex = Good lex and Alex = Evil Lex with the top colar unbuttoned is good.
I think it's the opposite actually, Lex's mother Lillian Luthor always used to call him Alexander and it's Lionel who's calling him Lex
Hmm just looked up the episode at Smallville Wikia, and you're right it does say that Alex = Evil Lex in the summary but in the notes it says :
Smallville Wikia Episode Notes
The production crew and fan sites refer to the "evil" Lex as Lex, and the "good" Lex as Alexander, presumably referring to the fact that Lex's loving, warm, and good-natured mother referred to him as Alexander while his derogatory father always refers to him as Lex. Both incarnations are referred to as Lex on screen. This idea is portrayed in Fracture (http://smallville.wikia.com/wiki/Fracture). Now we know that Lex doesn't have Evil Lex' memories but does he have good Lex' memories ? -
I just wonder if he even remember promising Lionel help with the Charity fund-raiser?
Another thing is, I'm not really sure if Lionel really gone evil here or if he's just faking it for some reason, maybe he believe he can better get Lex to trust him that way.

You guys forgot to mention the last scene between Lionel and Lex. Lionel becomes his old self again. He says one cannot deny his true nature. Lex then gives a small smile in the end, indicating he liked his 'evil' side.

This is a very high-quality episode. There are so many things to like about it. It was really cool to see the two sides of Lex split and acting of their own accord, on their own impulses. I really like the good Lex, and seeing him shine through, like in the ol' days of Season 1, was a nice bit of nostalgia. The chilling evil Alexander, on the other hand, was a very scary shadow of the future Lex who we know will be back to menace Clark and everyone he loves. Michael Rosenbaum's performance here was probably second only to the ones he turned in with "Shattered" and "Memoria." There were some lovely Chlark scenes mixed in as well, a few nice Lana moments that weren't painful to watch, and the scenes between the elder and younger Luthors were wonderfully acted as well. John Glover's switch from benevolent Lionel Luthor to the duplicitious, conniving businessman we'd known for three seasons was a little tough to watch, but he made it very convincing. Great episode -- I give it 9 out of 10 irradiated seeds for great acting, characterization, plot development, and a cool Chlarky super-save!

I am watching each episode all over again and I've always loved this one.
For one, having Lex spilt his personalities gives us a chance to see the Lex we all know from the comics, Michael Rosenbaum's performance in this episode is very chilling, he plays the role so easily, its hard to believe he's a jokster in real life when he plays the evil side so well. The Kryptonite ring was an ingenious plot device as well and it immediately goes to show how intelligent Lex really is, granting him the title of "Superman's greatest villain"
The scene between Lex's good side and bad side in the Luthor basement was well written, many may have been confused at what "evil" Lex was talking about, but I understood him perfectly. The 3 Musketeers and Man in the Iron Mask are great stories and to have the writers implement them in such a way was fun to see, the music that was attached to the scene was amazing as well and really fit the scene right.
Also I have a theory, while Lex doesn't fall completely evil until Season 7(with the death of his brother, than father), I do believe that when Lex comes together at the end, its his "evil" side that sticks out a bit more and this is where the transition into the Lex we know begins.

Probably the best Lex centric episode of the series but that being said I am not the biggest Lex fan(I like him but I am not like Lex is the greatest ever in the world and any episode that is lex focus is great). All that being said I probably would put it top 50
