Lionel obtains an artifact that gives the power of body transference. He intends to use the artifact on Lex, but instead finds himself switched with the body of Clark.

When "Clark" hugged 'his mom' and started a fire! lmao! I was laughing for like two hours! Lionel's a horny old man though isn't he. Martha, Chloe and Lana. In like a day, wow. :P

One of the best episodes in the season! I absolutely loved John Glover's performance. Welling was solid in this one also.
Ultimately, the most satisfying part was Lionel was right. He thought Kryptonite, or the stones, could somehow save his life. He spent all of Season 3 researching because he was dying. He was certain that something kryptonian could save him.
And, in Transference, it all came together. He was right. :)

The scene with Martha was priceless where he caught the trailor on fire after hugging her. I couldnt stop laughing. And poor Jonathan could never beat Lionel.

This episode has my favorite premise they have come up with because it involved Lionel getting powers. Plus, TW really impressed me because he nailed all of Lionel's mannerisms perfectly. Second only to Run in S4 in terms of my favorite episodes for the season.

I agree Ryan
Clark and Lionel switch bodies and Lionel finds out the truth about Clark Kent (for 30 minutes). Tom was brilliant playing Lionel and John was brilliant playing Clark. Great episode
Transference was in my top 3 eps of the lame season 4. . The ending was perfect, Lionel and Clark switching back and Lionel getting cured of his liver disease , that was excellent no doubt.
Following that we hear Lionel tell the doctor that he has changed and I believed he had. Great acting By John Glover, but we can never expect anything less, his performances are always great.
You gotta love the staredown.

I was kind of dissapointed they played the amnesia card once again. It would have been awesome if that scene had never happened, and they just eluded to Lionel knowing. But all in all, it is one of my favorite episodes of the show.

I loved this episode as well,It was great to see Lionel as Clark
for a change, the amnesia thing at the end was bad, mostly because Lionel had a great deal of information about CK.
I think that the series could had progressed better if
Lionel retained this information. In the end he is going to die anyway....I wish we could see another Transference episode,
how about Chloe or Lana gaining powers?

I finally got to see this! (It is the only episode of Season 4 I have ever seen), after hearing much talk about it.
It was....great!
Tom was brilliant playing Lionel and John was brilliant playing Clark. I couldn't agree more! Welling was fantastic playing Lionel and Glover had Welling down pretty good (a bit less than Welling had Glover down but still pretty good).
I too loved it when Lionel set the stuff on fire but I really loved it when he "peaked" while getting dressed. Too funny! :rotfl:
I got shivers when Clark was coming on to Chloe ("don't you wish"--wow that was hot!). I laughed out loud when Lana showed up at the barn and Clark/Lionel was all "this one again".
Just a great, great episode filled with terrific acting, wonderful dialogue and a good story.
Ok, so one thing bugged me: why were Lana and Jason kissing in a room at the school where ANYONE could walk in on them?! Duh.

in this episode after lana smacks lionel as clark.. u see him rubbing his face and i noticed that he had cuts on his fist .. which for clark kent would be impossible since his wounds heal imediately and there only caused by kryptonite soo they messed up! and since it was on his knuckles he probably punched some1 in real life.. haha jk i dont no about that;)
oh yea and the best part in the world is when lionel as clark is admiring his extremely hot body and then like peeks down his pants! it was kinda ffreaky when clark sniffed marthas hair i was like um okk

This was one of the most hilarious episodes ever! So many hilarious parts! I think people have already mentioned all that I can think of, so I won't be too reduntent. The scene where Lionel in Clark's body is admiring himself, let me just say that I won't complain about an extended amount of my daily dose of Tom. And the part with Clark (really Lionel in there) and Chloe, oh my gosh, you can just completely feel how she feels after he walks away. And the heat vision, how well Tom nails Lionel's little nuances, practically everything that happens after Lionel and Clark have switched bodies, it's just so funny.
Another thing about after Lana slaps Clark, maybe I'm going obsesively into the "super, immortal, stength", but why would he even react by turning his head? Wouldn't he not even feel it, let along react physically?

I saw this episode for the first time yesterday. I agree that there were many hilarious parts in it. IMHO, John Glover did better acting as Clark than Tom Welling did as Lionel. I just thought that TW over-acted a little. Just my opinion! I agree that the series would have progressed more effectively if Lionel had retained SOME memory of his experience.
Poor Jonathan-got thrown across a room....AGAIN!!
(I wonder what his stunt double is doing now?)

Yeah "Clark" could have stopped her hand but I think Lionel wanted to see what would happen if Lana hit him. Maybe he knew that since he was invulnerable that she would hurt her hand and wanted to see it.
I just don't understand how Lana didn't hurt herself. There's a scene I remember from the comics where Lois was angry with Clark and slapped his face and immediately cried out in pain "Ow!" and even talked about having her hand x-rayed to see if it was broken.

I really loved this episode it's one of my favorites. Although Lex and Lionel are the bad guys it is good to put them in this kind of relaxed and comic situations once a while. Villains need fun too. And I was wondering what would happen if Clark/Lionel used the red K ring??

This episode bothers me for some reason but it did have some excellent parts. I love the prison scene where Lionel in Clarks body is walking toward Clark and he looks fine with the great music. Good end fight there, and then when Lionel looks up at Clark before he skirts away, excellent. The scenes between Clark and Lex in this one were top notch too, my favorite part. I never gathered why Bridgette is the one who got the stone from Victor though. Who was in the car with her? Since she later tries to sell to Lex, then not him, so WTF? Loved Lionel with Lana....he groaned, not this one, when she was coming and tried every way to get rid of her, finally having to hit on her just to get her to leave LOL

Loved this episode, thought it was amazing. Loved the bit where clark/lionel held the tractor up and just said, "yes.... it all makes sense now" WELL GOOD!!! oh ye and when he gets horny with martha, u never see that emotion when hes himself. dirty boy isnt he, lol. Think its good for clark to understand the fragiliness of human life again. Something he learns a whole lot more of in S5.

this episode was kinda freaky at first, cuz everything was all weird, and thinking wat is goning 2 happen after clark get his own body back, but it sort of gets funny, clark popping the football, buring the wagon and stuff, this episode is pretty good except the fact that its just one of thoes useless episodes, cuz it doesnt advance the storyline any further, others episodes that are simillar to this is Cyborge, and the one where lana get all weird due to that flower thing DR.hamilton was expermenting with. But this episode did end with a cliff hanger style with that transeference stone.

huh. Lionel(in Clark) Couldn't catch the slap cause he still hasn't mastered the powers. There is a scene in 4.01 Crusade where Martha beats on Clarks chest. My guess since he's still young there still a softness to his skin. and Lionel(in Clark) psychologically still human and just reacting.
Reality wise it is better to have clark be like that; cause every contact will be a pain to others, and he'll end up a recluse like 3.12 Hereafter.

I guess that's true. Lionel wouldn't have mastered Clark's speed enough to catch Lana's hand. But I still think her hand should have been hurt. Martha's hands might have been hurt in Crusade but she was so busy being angry she wouldn't have noticed.

Luckily this episode just aired in australia tonight! lol I thought the episode was awesome, funny. Tom's acting has really improved he played lionel so well though his attitude was kinda pretty much the same as he would have been in red K (lol but I like watching that too.). Anyway when they first switched I think the reactions of both faces were done well.
I liked that tracter part when lionel was like 'How you do this?". He was so clueless, lol. Lionel was out of control with the girls I gotta say.
Funny when Lionel or said I say Clark said that he was clark and martha told him he was sick minded, lol. Then Clark was told by Chloe he needs psych help. It's a sad ending that clark's relationship with lana, chloe had to suck though. I think Clark should have worked more to patch things up. Only Lex he patched things up with..

Finally got the chance to see this episode and I loved it! TW did an incredible job as Lionel.Got all kinds of sexy vibes from him. He plays 'bad boy' very well. Anyone else find it interesting that Lex could tell that something was 'off' about Clark but Chloe and Lana were too clueless or self-absorbed to care or notice?Chloe and Lana disappointed me in this episode. If they are supposed to be good friends of Clark's they should have known Clark's behavior was OOC and not be so quick to get angry at him and jump down his throat.Sure there's some history amongst the three of them but true friends should know you well enough to know when you are not yourself. It just seemed as though Chloe and Lana were so caught up in their own issues/feelings that they didn't consider the possibility that something was wrong. You'd think they would have given Clark some latitude;he made an attempt to apologize and was basically shutdown and dismissed. Not a good reflection on either one of them. Despite that this episode rocked!
JG did a better job acting like Clark.

I just saw this one too. Very good when I was cringing at the overused premise, bt so well done here.
I too thought Clark possibly could have risked explaining to Chloe given all her openness to weirdness.
The Lionel near kiss of CHloe was so painful it was fantastic -- the poor girl tries to guard her feelings, can;t resist him, then WHAM. So wickedly cruel to her. :(

Probably my favourite SV episode. Loved TW's portrayal of MB's mannerisms. ROFLMAO when Lionel (in Clark) admired his "new" body in the mirror (and looked down his pants!!), when he said "this one" and "pluck your succulent fruit" when Lana showed up, and when he suffered "premature combustion" while smelling Martha's hair!!!
him a piece of their mind. and they were all on offensive.

I think it is very interesting that the "water" symbol is what facilitated the transfer of Lionel and Clark's souls from one body to another and that this symbol is what is on Lana's back and facilitates Isobel going in and out of Lana's body. Very interesting.

I have to agree w/ folks that this was one of the best, funny episodes ever.
I have to say that Tom Welling succeeded in stealing this entire episode. I'd seen video footage of him preening in front of the camera and couldn't for the life of me figure out why Clark would ever do that.
I just loved how Tom not only captured Lionel's braviosa attitude, he also beautifully mimmicked his walk, stances, vocal mannerisms, and facial twitches.
His interaction w/ Martha was hillariously creepy. I physically cringed when he smelled her hair and thought I was going to die from laughing when he set the trailer full of hay on fire afterwards.
My favorite parts though had to be Lionel interacting w/ the girls - Lana slapping him and his EVIL burn on Chloe.
I thought that John Glover didn't live up to his end of the switch but I might have to watch the episode again, Tom got to be so over the top it's easy to have a more subtle performance get overlooked.
I loved the parting shot w/ Lionel seeing Clark's outline in the fog and him running away to give Lionel his "life-altering" experience.

What did I think of Transference?
I thought Transference was funny. Imagine John Glover playing Clark Kent and Tom Welling playing Lionel Luthor. It was a great and very interesting show.
When Martha came to see Lionel, she told him, "I only came here because you told me it involved the safety of my son." Lionel Luthor told Martha Kent he was Clark Kent, her son. Martha didn't believe him at first and told Lionel she was leaving. Then Lionel said to Martha, "No, Mom! You have to believe me! Remember when I was 6 and I was playing tag with Dad... and all of a sudden I started running faster than I'd ever run before... and I was in the middle of Palmer Woods, completely lost... and you and Dad had to call Sheriff Ethan. And when you saw me, you started crying... And I thought something was wrong with me... and you said no there wasn't, and you held me in your arms... and you told me I was just special. I'm your special boy." (That sounded so cute coming out of John Glover's mouth. That was the best John Glover/Lionel Luthor quote from Transference, even though Lionel was supposed to be Clark Kent).
I thought the Clark & Lex scenes and transcript was very funny and interesting. Tom Welling was hilarious as Lionel Luthor.
Clark/Lionel: Lex! I need to get my hands on $57 million.
Lex: That's an interesting amount of money. Clark, I know you well enough to realize this isn't you talking.
Clark/Lionel: You're absolutely right, I'm not myself.
Another great scene with Clark and Lex is:
Clark: Lex, it's me, Clark. I need to talk to you.
Lex (to Clark): Stay where you are! After I drove my Porsche into the river and you fished me out, I asked your Dad if I could repay him. What did he say that you and I always joke about?
Clark: Lex, what is this? A pop quiz?
Lex: Answer the question!
Clark: He told you to drive slower.
Lex: Welcome back! (They hug each other. Aww, how cute)!
Clark: So you know what happened?
Lex: Well, it was a bit of a give away when you asked for $57 million.
Clark: Lex, my Mother told me what happened, and I'm sorry.
Lex: Clark, if you didn't come between me and my father in that visiting room... That would have been me behind bars. I should be thanking you.
(This is one of the best Clark & Lex scenes of season 4, because it shows them acting as friends, rather than acting as enemies. I also liked their transcripts from Transference. I'd rather see them as good friends, than as enemies. This is just my opinion).
Also, before Lionel Luthor became Clark Kent, he had dark circles under his eyes. After Clark & Lionel's bodies switched back to their original selves again, Lionel's dark circles under his eyes have disappeared; Clark Kent had somehow healed him. Lionel Luthor's face and eyes looked very healthy looking. This is one of my favorite episodes from Smallville, Season 4.
1) Favorite Clark moment: My favorite Clark moment is when Clark comes into Lex's Mansion and tells Lex he needs to talk to him. Lex asks Clark to answer a question, and Clark answered Lex, "Lex, what is this, a pop question?" Lex answered, "Just answer the question! After I drove my Porsche into the river and you fished me out, I asked your Dad if I could repay him. What did he say that you and I always joke about?" Clark answered, "He told you to drive slower." Lex answers, "Welcome back," and they hug each other. Lex thanks Clark for helping him. That was my favorite Clark moment: Lex and Clark hugging each other.
2) Favorite Clark line: "Lex, I need to get my hands on $57 million. You're absolutely right, Lex. I'm not myself."
3) My favorite Clark Kent scene: When Clark is Lionel and comes closer to Martha Kent and smells her hair, his eyes sparkle, and out comes the heat-vision.
Also, when Clark is at school (again he's Lionel), and turns around and looks at the girls saying, "Ladies," and the girls fall in love with him.
4) Funniest moment in the episode: Watching John Glover try to play the part of Clark Kent, especially when he said to Martha Kent, "And I thought something was wrong with me... and you told me I was just special. I'm your special boy." John Glover was hilarious.
5) I only wish that Clark Kent didn't feel so guilty about the switch -- after all, it wasn't his fault. I wish that Lana & Chloe were more understanding.
6) What do I like best about Tom's performance? Tom Welling did an excellent job portraying Lionel Luthor, everything from Lionel's voice to Lionel's accent.

i was thinking of something in this episode...
lionel obviously knew genevieve teague before her character was introduced, so he would know about her son, jason. but, when he is in clark's body and "coach teague" comes by, he doesn't know who he is. that just doesn't make sense to me! wouldn't lionel luthor, will all his rescources, know who the son of mrs. teague is?

I agree. It is sort of odd. I guess that since he was so self-absorbed in his new powers and body that he could care less what a Teague was doing in Smallville.

This is probably my favorite episode of all time...
It sure was mine. This was the episode that started my crush on Thomas Welling. I'm sorry to have to admit, that lousy... Lionel Luthor sure knows how to put on the charm. I was thinking, "Lana, what's wrong with you? He could have kissed me all he wanted!" <3 <3 <3
for sure one my fav episodes. The acting was awesome. Tom was hot. lol

Oh, don't get me started. Ever since I've taken a considerable liking to someone else (from a certain movie), there have only been a few other men who barely exist at all, and Thomas is one of them. All others, even past crushes, if I sat next to them on a plane, I might as well be blind.

this was probably the best smallville episode so far. it was great through and through - a great idea, superb script, and incredible acting. Especially Tom Welling was AMAZING. The way he talks and moves in this episode, it's like he's another person, and you can really see Lionel! He moves and talks just like John Glover does when he's playing Lionel, it is incredible! And Glover's acting is really good too, he's suddenly completely sweet and nice and friendly - it's really great acting. and then the whole episode is just so funny - my favourite scene being the one where Lionel checks out his new body in the mirror and peeks down his pants and then gets this EXTREMELY satisfied smile on his face. SO funny. And when he hugs Martha and starts a fire, oh my gosh, I was on the floor laughing. Well, almost. And the Lana and Chloe scenes? Fantastic!!
in case you didn't get it: I love this episode!

Great episode!
I loved watching Tom pretend to be Lionel, Lionel pretend to be Clark. It was so funny at times! But then again when Lional in Clark was getting close with Lana, i absolutely gagged, Lionel and Lana so don't go togethr, and it left a huge problem with Clark because after the episode both Chloe and Lana hated him.

Just think Clark could have easyliy been in Lex body and Lex in Clark body. It was kind of funny when Lionel was in Clark body. Good thing he did'nt flash his powers around.

I just watched this episode, and I was blown away by it.
I loved how Tom brought out the 'Lionel-As-Clark'.
But I found that there were many funny scenes:
- In the beginning, when Jonathan asked Clark to pull up the tractor, Clark's face was like wtf?
- 'I need a hug'
- And last but not least, when Lana showed up in the barn, Clark mumbled to himself: not this one. I practically died from laughter.
The scene where 'Clark-As-Lionel' told Martha about the 'because-you're-special'-scene was sooo heartbreaking!
And man, did Tom ever looked hot!
For me, it was an interesting epi. :)

In a season of bad episodes, Transference stands out as a good episode.
Great acting and very funny moments.
One of the highlights of an other wise dismall season.

This episode gets 10 out of 10 body-switching kryptonian water elements for purely amazing acting on the parts of Tom Welling and John Glover. It was incredible how those two pulled off acting like each other's characters, and it was a hoot to see the way they interacted with the other actors and actresses. Clark had his hands full by the end of the episode in terms of covering for all the actions that Lionel had committed in his name, and it set up a cool arc for Lionel throughout the rest of the season.

LOL, yeah, that one particular scene in the loft with Martha... that was just plain creepy and uncomfortable. But it was exactly what Lionel would do, which made sense... Yep, he was a total perv. I bet if Lois was still in town, he would've made a pass at her, too, while he was at it. I would've liked to have seen Lionel-in-Clark's reaction to her.

I love this episode. It is one of..if not my favorite of the series. Something minor I have been wondering for a while now though. When Lionel (as Clark) comes in on Lana and Jason and discovers their affair, is this the first time Lionel meets Lana (onscreen)? He only knows who she is cuz he overhears Jason say her name. He hesitates alittle before he says Lana, like he is just learning it. What do you think?

Hmmm... I think that's possible. I don't remember her sharing any scenes with Lionel before. Although, she was at the Luthor Mansion in "Suspect," as shown in flashbacks, though that doesn't definitively mean she met him then. If nothing else, they hadn't really had any major interactions prior to that moment, from what I can recall.

^^^ I wondered about that too! I mean if Lionel already knew Lana because I remember during the Metamorphosis episode, when Lana rode into the stable with her horse, Lex was there and he introduced himself to her, she told him they had already met when Lionel invited Lana and her aunt Nell over to the house and Lana found Lex with a girl skinny dipping in the pool.

Probably my favorite storyline they came up with. Lionel w/ powers = brilliant. Tom Welling isn't the best actor, but he has his moments. This episode was one of them because he did a good job getting the mannerisms and speech pattern down. I also loved seeing John Glover played the doe-eyed innocent character.

This episode has my favorite premise they have come up with because it involved Lionel getting powers. Plus, TW really impressed me because he nailed all of Lionel's mannerisms perfectly.
I agree. Near perfect execution all the way around. There are too many good scenes to name, but my absolute favorite is when Clark barges into the mansion and Lex pulls out a gun on him. ROTLMAO That was gold.
----- Added 1 Minutes later -----
...why were Lana and Jason kissing in a room at the school where ANYONE could walk in on them?! Duh.
Hormones trump brains.

I think it is very interesting that the "water" symbol is what facilitated the transfer of Lionel and Clark's souls from one body to another and that this symbol is what is on Lana's back and facilitates Isobel going in and out of Lana's body. Very interesting.
I noticed that, too.
