Things are finally coming together for Lana and Clark when the voice of his Kryptonian father issues an ultimatum. Lex prepares for his wedding, and Lionel works at manipulating a jealous Chloe. Tragedy strikes the Kents and Clark decides he has to leave. Putting on the red kryptonite ring and saying goodbye to Lana, Clark rides off to Metropolis. Meanwhile, Lex is plunging to the bottom of the ocean.... Continued next season.

If you watched exile then you must know that the pilot hired by Helen to take Lex to his crash, jumped before the plane crashed

Recently when i was watching exodus i noticed that when Lex woke up in the plane alone, and the plane door was closed..

i wonder who closed the door after the pilot jumped off the plane

This episode was so heart wrenching. I cried for probably everyone. My heart broke most though when Jonathan got out his platitudes in the hospital. I felt so bad for him and Martha for losing the baby and felt so bad for Clark that he was the reason abnd felt he wasnt wanted by his parents anymore. I felt bad for Lana who really was trying to reach out to Clark. I felt bad for Pete because he wasnt able to stop Clark. I felt bad for Lex because...well the guy was plunging into the ocean...And I really thought Helen could of made a really good character on the show *sigh*

but there seeemed to not be much Chloe durring all this.

I cant help but think of now how that ship could of helped Jonathan. And as much as I dont want to think that Jor El is a good character on this series he was right. When Clark didnt leave he did bring nothing but harm to the ones he loved. Of course leaving didnt make things any better either. But still. It was an awesome episode.

i liked this season finale episode! and i agree with "OutlawAngel" that it was sad for everyone:Clark,Lana,Lex,Pete,Jonathan,Martha, and even Chloe because she likes Clark so much and her heart was broken to pieces(I know how you feel Chloe) anyway i felt very bad for Clark bacause it seemed like Jonathan almost hated him because of what he did. and poor Lex got cheated by another woman. first Desiree and now Helen. He doesn't have very much luck with women. anyway this is a good episode and i especially like the part where Pete confronts Lionel in the caves and Clark steals the Kryptonite key and then when Lionel realizes the key is gone and gets mad Pete says "Careful Mr. Luthor, wouldn't want to look weak" good one Pete! the episode ending was great too, with Clark driving down the road on the motorcycle and you can see Metropolis in the distance.

I really liked this episode too. I was in awe with the ending! I agree with OutlawAngel. I felt bad for everyone at the end: Clark not feeling wanted, Jonathan and Martha losing their baby, Chloe forming a partnership with Lionel, and Lex being left for dead in the plane. It was one of the best season finales (besides season 4 finale). Pete also played an important role in the episode so I was happy about that.

Who says the pilot jumped out of THAT door. There could've been another door in the back or something.

This episode managed to tie a lot of the aspects of the season together which subsequent finales have failed to do.

I just wish Clark could of told Lana everything when they were together and I think that Lana would except him for who he really is. I wish his relationship with Lana could of lasted forever!

This is probably the worst season finale for the series, but it led to my favorite premiere so it is forgiven.

Couldnt agree with you more. All that episode i was hoping Clark would simply just tell her his secret. For me it was a great season finale i reckon. I found it sad as when Martha lost her baby and when Jonathon told Clark what his actions had caused...the look on Clark's face made me feel so sad. After that i could tell why he would want to run away but why run away when he finally had Lana!!?

I think it's hilarious that they needed a double to ride the motorcycle. TW can't ride a bike?

I just got done watching all of Season 2 (I had seen it when it was first one but not since - needed a re-fresh). I do have to say that I love Season 2 - so much is going on and there was a whole lot of character development - especially in Exodus.

Exodus was good, but sad.. Poor Martha's baby, I wonder what would happen if it didn't get killed.. They should have kept the baby, now that would be a great twist:)

Oh the Clana kiss under the tree, with the horses, brings a smile to your face:)

What did I think of Exodus?

1) I liked the meeting of Kal-El and Jor-El for the first time. This is the first time they get to talk to each other face to face. Clark asks Jor-El who he is and the voice answers, "I am Jor-el, your father." Clark answers surprisingly, "I thought you died!" Jor-El answers like a caring and loving father, "I am his memory, his will. I am to fulfill his promise and guide you all the days of your life. You are the last son of Krypton. When you traveled through the cosmos, you carried the hopes and dreams of your people. They now live through you, Kal-El. It is time." Clark asks curiously, "Time for what?" Jor-El: "It's time to accept your destiny."

(I liked this scene where Clark Kent meets his biological father. Clark wasn't too happy about meeting his biological father, though. We all know in the Superman movies, that Jor-El is not as bad as Clark Kent makes him out to be. Jor-El is the good guy).

2) This next scene that I like is the Jonathan, Martha & Clark scene:

Clark Kent has a nice talk with his Dad, Jonathan Kent about meeting his biological father, Jor-El. This was my favorite scene from Exodus, when Clark talks to Ma & Pa Kent. This is the first time Clark Kent talks to his parents about his father, Jor-El, and this is one of the best scenes of Smallville:

Clark: I kind of met my biological father. When I heard his voice, it was coming from the ship. But it sounded like it was coming from my own head. He said it was time.

Jonathan: He said it was time for what?

Clark: To leave Smallville and fulfill my destiny.

Martha: He said that?

Clark: I have until sundown today.

Jonathan: Or what?

Clark: I'm not sure. He said I didn't have a choice. Why is it happening now when my life is just coming together? The farm's out of debt, I'm gonna be a big brother ... Lana & I are finally geting together.

Martha: Whatever your biological father may have had in mind for you, they're his hopes and dreams, not yours.

Jonathan: Clark, you choose your own destiny. Nobody can decide that for you, son.

Clark: This is my home. And you're my parents. It's where I belong, and I'm not going anywhere.

(This is my favorite Clark Kent moment: the scene with Clark, Jonathan & Martha Kent. A very happy family).

3) My favorite Clark Kent line is: Clark: "Dad, thanks for always believing in me." Jonathan answers, "You're welcome, son." The funniest quote that came out of Clark Kent was when he said to Lionel Luthor about the caves and Dr. Walden, "I'm surprised someone like you, Mr. Luthor, would put stock in anything he had to say." (This was when Lionel Luthor told Clark that Mr. Walden said that Clark Kent was going to rule the world).

4) This next scene was Allyson's best act in Exodus. She was a good actress. My favorite things that Allyson said in Exodus was:

"Clark, who was gonna tell me that you & Lana are together. I came over to the barn the other night to warn you about something, but it doesn't matter now. The point is, I saw you & Lana in a major lip lock. News flash. You've always been in love with Lana. I tried to deny it, thinking that maybe we could work something out, but it's like fate, Clark. Inevitable, but always surprising when it actually happens."

Clark: I was gonna tell you, Chloe.

Chloe: "Really? Obviously it was on top of your to-do list. You know, I can deal with the fact that you guys are together. It hurts, but I was prepared for it. But we just made a promise to be honest with each other, and you didn't have the guts to keep your word! Or was it just that it was too much fun making a fool of me that you couldn't reveal your secret? Have a nice life, Clark!"

(Allyson, you should be proud of yourself. This is your personal best. This is one of Allyson's best moments, and this was a good script for Allyson).

5) My favorite scene is the Clark & Lex scene where Clark & Lex are talking about Helen:

Lex tells Clark that Helen's not walking down the aisle tomorrow. Clark answers Lex, "I saw her last night. She seemed really happy." Lex answers, "Well, a lot can change in 24 hours." Clark asks Lex, "Why did she break it off?" Lex answers Clark, "I've always been fighting my destiny, trying to avoid becoming my father. But we all have certain genes that, no matter how much we want to change, dominate us."

Clark: What did you do?

Lex (tells Clark the truth without revealing his secret about Clark's blood that he stole from Helen): I betrayed Helen's trust. Then I fought my own nature and did something very unLuthor-like. I confessed my sin, hoping she'd forgive me.

Clark: My guess is she didn't.

Lex: Don't tell anyone, Clark. I want to hold onto my romantic notions for one more day.

6) I only wish that Clark didn't blow up the spaceship, and I wish that Chloe didn't go to Lionel Luthor to spy on Clark and do whatever Lionel had in mind for her.

7) The funniest moment in the episode:

There are a couple of funniest moments about Exodus. One is when Clark goes into the caves and sees Lionel Luthor there. Lionel says something funny that made me laugh, and I think that Clark thought it was funny, too.

Lionel: According to poor Dr. Walden, you're talked about quite a bit on these walls. Apparently you are going to rule us all.

Clark: I'm surprised someone like you, Mr. Luthor, would put stock in anything he had to say.

The next funniest moments, is when Pete Ross comes into the caves and talks to Lionel Luthor, so that Clark can superspeed and steal the green Kryptonite key that belongs to Lionel Luthor. Pete says:

Pete: Where's what? Careful, Mr. Luthor. You wouldn't want to look weak. (Pete was talking about what Lionel Luthor said to him about "people are always at their weakest when they hate somebody.") Pete was very clever in what to say to Lionel Luthor.

8) What did I like best about Tom Welling's performance? I liked everything about his performance, from Clark Kent, to the mean Kal-El at the end of the show. To a happy Clark, to a sad Clark Kent.

(But Allyson & John Schneider did a fantastic job in Exodus:

Allyson in getting mad at Tom/Clark and John Schneider breaking down and crying over Martha's truck accident and losing the baby. John Schneider and Allyson Mack stole the show).

I rember watching this when I was like in second grade at the end with CLark riding away on his motercycle. I was mad I didn't want to have to wait until the third season to see what happend next. But yeah this episode wasn't really sad but it did have it's moment like when Clark and Lana were in the barn togeher. I loved that song that was playing.

Gosh Clark does some dumb stuff in this episode. It's really interesting to watch these episodes again though, because it sheds light on a lot of things that come later.

My heart breaks for the Kent Family, for Lex... for Clark. The Kent's had just paid off their debt, they were about to have a baby... oh it's so sad.

My heart really does break for Clana in this episode. Calling and Exodus are like... one big episode.

Chloe makes her deal with the devil. Clark fulfills Jor-el's warnings. It's almost chilling when Clark says, "I didn't have a choice." Those were Jor-el's exact words of warning. I'm a huge Jor-el supporter so I'm always listening closely for possible double meanings (fanwank opportunities).

My fave line from this episode is, "Clark this is wacked!" I love Pete.

I'm excited about Season 3. :D

I thought the kiss in this episode was pornographic. Clark really stuck his tongue down Lana's throat. :rotfl:I guess he just wanted to keep her quiet so she wouldn't start with all that "lies and secrets" stuff. But it didn't work because she immediately starts up on it anyway. Are teen relationships now really this intense? If they are, I am glad I'm no longer a teen. I could not stand all the drama.

This episode showed why some people have criticized Lana of being self-involved. She does not know people and she acts like she has never been in any kind of relationship before, platonic or otherwise, with people. She just expects Clark to just lay his life out to her when they have only just been in a romantic relationship for, what, one day? What person tells you everything about themselves in one day? People marry one another and don't know everything about the person they are marrying. That is why some people say that you never really know someone until you marry them. Not many people give you everything about themselves upfront. You learn about people as the relationship develops, but Lana is just not that patient so she loses something that could have been really wonderful.

People say Clark should have told her about himself, but I don't think he should have told her anything until he knew that he could trust her. If she had just let the relationship run its course he would have eventually seen that he could trust her and he would have told her, of his own free will, about himself. But no...she pushed and pushed and pushed until she finally pushes Clark away from her and he breaks it off because he can't deal with her badgering him any longer.

As for Jonathan in this episode, he was just awful to Clark and was the main reason that Clark ran away. I think if Martha knew how Jonathan treated Clark she would have been very angry with him. He totally shut Clark out when Clark needed him the most. That was sad.

Great post. I especially like what you say about Lana. Helen's advice to Lana at the Talon... I don't know if it was this episode or an earlier one but, her advice goes right along with what you're saying. Lana tried to take her advice but... Clark was having a meltdown which raised more questions for Lana later. I still think that he should have taken a chance and told her in Season 3. The whole last bit of Season 2 Clark's fighting for Clana. He believes she's the ONE!

You're right about that kiss! It was... INTENSE, a little awkward and a little gross. LOL! For the first time ever while watching that scene I could see how much Clark loved Lana. Whether or not he knew her or she's the one for him non withstanding. He's really got hearts in his eyes. In a puppy love way of course. I kind of want it to work for Clark's sake going into season 3. LOL!

About Jonathan, you're right. He shut Clark out at a time when he should have loved him the most. Jonathan was seriously hurting and he did the wrong thing. I think that's why he fought so hard to get Clark back. Also he's kind of hypocritical blame it all on Jor-el later IMO. Martha and Jonathan were the ones urging Clark to rebel against the ship; not knowing anything about teenaged aliens. What if Clark had to go on this mission or he'd die, or blow up, or turn green? They don't know. It was rather selfish of them. I'm not saying I don't understand it. They were afraid of losing Clark. It's just, they should have though it through a bit more. *sigh*

In light of what I've read about the show in hindsight, I'm going to watch the rest of the series thinking of everything before Season 8 as Clark's trials. I don't buy what AlMiles say about Jor-el training Clark through his various trials throughout the seasons. So we'll see. *smirk*

This was one of the three most rockin' season finale episodes of Smallville, in my humble opinion. There were so many great character moments. Clark was really starting to feel the weight of his destiny, or Jor-El's destiny for him, which he kept calling him towards. It's so sad how Clark's actions inevitably led to Martha's miscarriage, and the way Jonathan spurned him, which helped lead to his running away to Metrpolis, but it made for a great, heartbreaking way of ending the season and leading into the excellent "Exile." The Chlark fight was awesome; Chloe had every right to say what she did, even though she was totally high-school jealous. When they revealed that she was the one Lionel was talking to at the end of that episode... eek! And then Lex crashing into the ocean after marrying Helen -- aaahhhh!!! What an intense episode... I may have to re-watch that one soon.

Oh my god. That are the tree words I say for this beautiful and touching episode. It was so heartbreaking. And I felt so bad for Clark and everyone. The fact that Jonathan and Martha lost the baby and that Jonathan argued with Clark for his actions and the consequences.. oohmy, I almost cried when I saw Clark breaking. I will definitly watch this episode again. But it's just not fair that Lana and Clark were separated and that Lex woke up in the plane, having nobody around him and he plunging in the ocean.
I find that Chloe was a real bad-ass in this epi. Clark was going to tell her about him and Lana, but Chloe arrived at a wrong time and just spit all over him. And now she works with Lionel. Daaaaaaamn.
I loved season 2

Can't wait to see the next season.

This is one of my favourite finales. I love the whole tone of the episode, and what's more it stands out because it's probably the only finale where none of the characters are in mortal peril - and yet that final scene with Clark riding off to Metropolis is so ominous. I love Jor-el's "You will obey me, Kal-el!" line. Terence Stamp's delivery is always spot-on, and this line just epitomises the father/son relationship they had at that point in the series. Martha losing the baby as Clark watches through the hospital room window is one of the saddest moments in the show's history.
An absolutely fantastic episode (glad to hear new viewers appreciate it, Twelling SV L0ve!)

I'll be watching it again tonight. The one thing that's really hard to stomach is Lionel roping Chloe into delivering him a bio. of Clark Kent. Sure she's close to Clark and ferret out secrets but Lionel has money to burn can't he just hire someone to do his evil deeds? It's somewhat believable at the end of this episode but when it continues into season 3 and Exile it sort of loses steam.
Lionel presumably lives in Metropolis and I know it's a huge city but he's still completely clueless as to Clark's presence there? Now would have been the time to open the pocket book and hire a really good private detective. Sometimes writing on Smallville is just too lame for well....words.

I am not sure if it's Calling or Exodus but I personally never got why Jonathon did a complete 180 on Lex and said he was like his son then gave him his father's compass. It was so out of character.

IMO this was not a bad episode but pretty close. I mean how could Clark NOT have known that putting a Green Kryptonite "key" into the ship would be a REALLY bad idea. Maybe not foresee that it would go "nuclear" but that something really, really bad was going to happen.
