Lex decides to have his father's office bugged as revenge for his father doing the same thing. Unfortunately, the "buggers" have other plans... plans which include holding Martha and the blind Lionel hostage. How can Clark save the day when they're so high up in the LuthorCorp building in Metropolis?

i agree, this episode is one of my favorite of the series, for many reasons. its intense and action packed. i remember the first time i saw the opening scene i was like "what the heck?" because lex was tearing his place apart looking for the "bugs" the scene i especially liked is when Clark jumps from the Daily Planet to Luthorcorp, that was one of the best scenes in the history of smallville! and the way Clarks facial expression changes right before he crashes through the window is funny!
and at the very end of the episode, you have to feel sorry for lex when he sees the kents all together and happy, and he has no one who cares for him. it makes me sad every time i see it

One of my all time favorites just for the leap alone. My second favorite special effects sequence after the bus stopping in Rogue. The bus stop is still my favorite because it was the most realistic looking. The episode also had great suspense, and the awesome Lex scene near the end with him standing alone and SR-71's "Tomorrow" playing as the camera fades away. One of the best scenes of the whole show simply because of how well it forshadowed Lex's future of always being alone. Plus, it was awesome that Metropolis was used as the background.

I liked that Clark was willing to face his fear of heights the save his mom. I am glad that Clark is afraid of heights because it makes him more believable. Evebn though there is pretty much no way he would get hurt falling from the Daily Planet building he still had that fear. It just seems to make him more human.
This was yet another episode where I wanted to smack Jonathan for being the farm's donkey if yah get where I am going.

The best part of the episode...Lex is one of the most tragic Supervillains ever...

Clark's leap was fantastic! I rewatch the episode for that scene alone.

Loved this one and agree it was tragic for Lex. The plan completely backfired on him to say the least, but the ending where he stood in envy at Clark and his family was emotional. Great scenes in this on

I normally hate "hostage" episodes. They're mostly characters sitting around waiting for some deus ex machina to save them. But Smallville does hostage episodes pretty well. 'Insurgence' is definitely the best, but 'Jitters' and 'Lockdown' aren't bad either.

I love Insrugence and Jitters and Lockdown certainly is not the worst episode in Smallville history. Smallville does do hostage episodes well I will give them that.

This was the only episode of Season 2 that i missed and after i watched Season 3 i went back and realised i had missed just this one episode. So i watched it and was prefoundly happy with the whole thing. It was very good IMO. I liked the whole hostage theme, Clark jumping for the Daily Planet all the way to that building, how Martha found that file on Clark and the look on Lionel's blind face :D...just superb. Another great episode from S2

Just watched this episode last night -- can't say anything bad about it at all actually. I didn't really like the fact that there was NO mention of Whitney, but hey solid eppy regardless.

As I am going back through watching the seasons again I came upon something I did not know... In this episode how does Lionel come to get the octagonal disk?
Thank you for any light.

The octagonal disc was in the file that he had of Clark. However, by the end of the episode, Clark (or maybe Martha) gets the disc back and hides it at the farm.

Wasn't the octagonal disc in some kind of glass cylinder?
Anyway that doesn't awnser x82nd's question.
I cant remember how Lionel came across the key either..

Yes it was in a glass cylinder.
How Lionel got the key was never fully explained. All we know is that the last time we see the key (before this episode) is when it is separated from the ship at the beginning of Vortex. As near as I can figure we're left to assume that Lionel came upon it somehow. Maybe went around the cornfields looking for octagonal shaped pieces of metal after Dr. Hamilton showed Lionel the Ship with the missing piece?
All we know for sure is that at some point he found it.

i really liked this episode (the jump was awesome!), but the one part that broke my heart was jonathan and martha having a pretty serious fight. it wasnt just a little disagreement, and i hated to see them both so upset. ok, so maybe i love the kents a little too much :)

What a cool episode, with no freaks, just Lex and Lionel battle with the Kents stuck in the middle. I always wondered about the part in the Lionel shot that guy, how could he know? Is it possible he already got his sight back? That would change a lot of things, specially the fact that he saw Clark using his abilities.

i think he just sensed the guy and guessed shooting him because i don't think he got his sight back before prodigal in the time line of episodes

Let me make sure I understand this correctly. Lionel Luthor wants Martha for himself, so he researches and finds out when Jonathan's and Martha's anniversary is, invents work for Martha to do on that day to get her away from Jonathan, then gives her a gift that he knows Jonathan could never afford. Do you know how sick that is?

so...did clark fly a little bit there ior what?
you can see him in the reflection, he's falling lower/in line with the window he's aiming for...then sort of goes forward.
I totally got that impression that he jumped, began to fall then flew forward a smidgen from that scene

I just rewatched this episode and i think it's one of my favs in season 2.
i really love one of the last scenes where lex is standing alone outside of luthorcorp and "Tomorrow" by SR-71 (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00006LSQL/gijoevid)is playing.
great scene!
i love watching the older episodes, i love seeing lex's slow, but destined descent into evil.

I think he must've gained his sight by this point. He could have been shooting at Clark or Martha if he was really "blind".

Amazing episode from beginning to end. I hope episodes from S10 will be similary action oriented.
BTW you can tell that Smallville's producers were writing the script to Spider-Man 2. Just compare the jumps on both versions!

SOME people like to say that Smallville has gotten better over the years - especially after Gough & Millar left - but this episode pokes holes into that opinion. As we arrive to the end of Smallville, Insurgence still sticks out as one of the best episodes. How many of you would include this in your TOP 10 list for the series?

I have it in my top 20, that being said I don't see how 1 episode settles any argument of what is better newer or older seasons

Insurgence is better than anything the last 3 seasons have had to offer. And I'm even including Absolute Justice. Granted, seasons 8-10 have improved the overall quality of the show but that's from a general sense. Season 2 had Insurgence but it also had Rosetta. So. . .it makes you re-evaluate things.

To be honest I liked Rosetta but I am not all gaga over it like some people(ie omg Christopher Reeve, best.episode.ever) and in terms of what was wrong with S2, I hate Exodus. I think all seasons have there strengths and weaknesses(grant you S5+7 tow that line thinly in terms of strengths) and one good episode doesn't make a season for me(else I would rate S3 higher because I loved Perry and generally didn't care for the rest of the season)
In terms of S2(tied with S8 for 3rd best season), I thought it was a step down from S1(My second favorite season) due to the show introducing elements into the storyline(ie angst) that I didn't care for(although the angst factor got way worse in following seasons)

I just watched this and it is one of the best episodes of the early series.... and probably the whole series. Loved it. :)

Just rewatched Insurgence and I forgot what an awesome episode it was. Action-packed and tons of thrills, plus the leap scene was so epic. And I loved how we got to see the Daily Planet.:)
