Morgan Edge is back with a new face (Patrick Bergin as Morgan Edge), and Lex is slowly becoming unraveled as his world comes crashing around him in madness. Lies are all around, and Lex is unsure of who - if anyone - to trust.

Best smallville ep ever.
Lex (MR) was brilliant. Lionel was at his cold hearted MB best. Morgan Edge returned with a new face.
Classic ending (before mindwipes became the ''in thing'') with Lex witnessing Clark ''tossing the car like a toy''.

I agree with Alan. This is definately my favorite episode of the show. The performances, suspense, Lex finding out about Clark, etc.. Just a fantastic, must see, episode.

This is up there on my list, too. I prefer Memoria, but I just love the level of tension and paranoia throughout the episode. I LOVED when Lex witness Clark take out the car. The strange joy he had in recognizing he had been right all along.
Excellent performance. And I loved Patrick as Morgan Edge. Hauer had the creepy factor down perfectly in the season opening 2-parter, but there was something a bit more threatening in Patrick's Edge. ..And, hey, if you have to recast Hauer, it feels like this is the way to go.

Shattered is one of my favorite episodes of all time. Absolutely brilliant, and I rarely say that about SV episodes.

this is a great episode
michael rosenbaum is great in this episode. i like when he singing the lulliby to the blanket, when he bashes the guy's head on the car and steals it, and when he is in the stables with Lana and he goes "what is this?" then she goes"camomille, it'll help you feel better" and lex goes"liar"
lana:"what?"
lex:"LIAR! YOUR TRYING TO DRUG ME!" and of course when he finds out about Clark. and finally in the end when he is in Belle Reeve sanitarium because he truly looks insane. Great episode!

I felt so bad for poor Lex. He was set up and Clark knew it but wouldnt help him since Lex foudn out his secret. The epsiodes I am sad about the most are the episodes like this with Lex.

Any episode that ends with a song by Johnny Cash is going to be good...and then how it ended and the events leading up to it...wow.

I tell yah though whenever I watch this episode I laugh when Lex starts screaming 'The car' because I think of the bloopers where Michael is trying to deliver the line and he is like 'the car the
@#$%&% car man!' and is laughing.
So I know the scene itself isnt meant to be funny but I remeber that dang blooper and I cant help but bust out laughing.

Lex's last line to Clark was great:
LEX: I was right about you all along, Clark. You're not even human.

I just recently saw the episode again on DVD and i have forgot how good it was. MR did a great job in this episode. I was really sad in the end with lex in the asylum and such. That Johnny Cash song topped it off also. My new favorite episode.

I love the ending with Hurt, but does anyone know the name of the song playing when Lex steals that guy's truck after leaving Lana at the stables?
The lyrics say something about a "mountain" and "black out the sun." I've searched the forums, google, and the music page, but I can't find it anywhere.

One of the greatest eps. Smallville has ever produced. I rank this up there with Rogue, Covenant, and Hidden as the best of Smallville.
BEST SMALLVILLE EPISODE EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
MR was so nice in this epi, he looked like he was really losing his mind!!
Loved it.

I would have to say that this episode has the best scene ever, right at the end when the Johnny Cash song "Hurt" plays and you see lionel and lex looking at each other through the glass(although lex doesnt know lionels there) then you see lionels eyes seem to water. I think it shows a side of lionel that makes me think "does he think hes gone to far?"

Oh, I really loved the episode Shattered. The best part of the show is when Morgan Edge tries to run down Lex, and Clark comes to the rescue by pushing Lex out of the way. Clark stops the car and splits the vehicle in two, and pushes it out of the way. Lex has a shocked look on his face. There are 2 classical Lex Luthor quotes. One is, "I was right about you all along Clark." And number two is, (as Lex is smiling), "You're not even human." I'll never forget the expression on clark's face. His eyes were wide open, looking at Lex. I only wish that Tom Welling and Michael Rosenbaum did a commentary on "Shattered." It would have been a hilarious and interesting commentary.
I thought this was a funny scene. If I were Tom Welling, I would have laughed so hard watching Michael Rosenbaum singing a lullaby song to a wrapped up blanket he called "Julian." I don't know how Tom Welling was able to keep a serious look on his face in this hilarious Lex Luthor scene.
Clark: Lex, what are you doing here?
Lex: I had to get the baby. He was crying. My father woke him.
Clark: The baby? What baby?
Lex: My little brother Julian.
Clark: Lex...
Lex: Shhh...shhh. He's asleep.
The next scene that I liked was when Lionel Luthor was screaming and yelling at Clark Kent visiting Lana Lang at the hospital. John Glover had one of the best lines and one of the best scenes in Shattered. He did an excellent job as an actor during this scene where he yells at Clark Kent.
Lionel Luthor tells Clark angrily, "You know, I wasn't quite sure which of them was more out of touch with reality -- Don Quixote, jousting with imaginary enemies, or his loyal lackey Sancho Panza, indulging his master's fantasies in spite of the danger to everyone else."
Lionel (to Clark, voice rising angrily): "No! No! I don't want to hear it! If you had listened to me, Lex would already be getting the help he needs, and Miss Lang wouldn't be here fighting for her life!" (Well done, John Glover).
And my favorite last scene is Clark and Lana. Clark Kent visits Lana Lang at the hospital.
Lana Lang asks how Lex is. "How's Lex?" asks Lana.
Clark tells Lana "Lex isn't doing so good." Lana responds to Clark, "I'm sorry. I know how much you wanted to help him."
Clark tells Lana, "the doctors say that you're doing better."
Lana: "I almost died, Clark." Clark Kent responds with, "I know."
The last line that Lana says is sad for Clark to hear. This is one of the unforgettable Lana & Clark scenes from the 3rd Season of Smallville (at least in my opinion).
Lana Lang to Clark Kent, "I always thought you were being paranoid. That being around you is too dangerous. But it's true."
Clark: Lana...
Lana: "It's okay, Clark. I know, you're really looking out for me. But you're right... I think I have to stay away from you."

*cough* nine inch nails, covered by Johnny. But I agree, I actually found an episode I quite enjoyed, but then Channel 4 has chosen to screen smallville at 4:30am recently.

I agree with all of you - this is a very good episode. I've watched it several times and the last time was yesterday on dvd.
I think, there is only one little "mistake".
Towards the end, as you all know, Clark comes to rescue Lex from Edge or viseversa, (in fact he saves Edge first as he takes the gun out of Lex's hand when superspeeding in the room) Edge manages to overpower Clark with the kryptonite rocks.
And then, Lex shoots Edge and Clark says "Thank you!" to Lex.
Every time I hear that "Thank you" from Clark, I'm like, "hm, I'm not sure if this was right".
I don't think, Clark actually would thank anybody who just has killed another person - whatever the reason was for that person to do it.
I wish, Clark just would have looked to Lex and said nothing at all.
That's the only thing that disturbs me a little in this episode, but well, that's only my point of view.
What do you think?

I agree with pretty much everyone in here that this was a fantastic episode. Everything was on point from the great acting from M.R., the great plot, the special effects and a fast pace. This is also my favorite episode of the entire series.

Poor Lex. His father really does hate him. I never understood why Clark didn't take the scotch to be examined after he found out from Darius that they had been drugging Lex through the scotch. That might have saved him.
I always laugh at the scene where Morgan Edge beats Clark down with kryptonite and Lex tells Clark that he thinks he can just slither away from him. I always think that is so funny.
Also, this episode shows why Clark cannot tell Lana any secret or enlist her help. She always wants to get involved, be trusted and told everything. When she is, though, she gets hurt. Who does she blame then? Clark. When she told him that she had to stay away from him he looked like he expected her to react in that way. (She actually acts the same way in season 7 after she is released from being Brainac-ed. She runs away like she does here.) I'd never tell her anything if I were Clark.

This is one of my favourite Smallville episodes ever, and probably the best acting MR has done throughout the whole series.
Clark had to make some really tough moral decisions in that episode. Going after Morgan Edge even though he knew he could possibly be killed. Defying his parents and helping Lex find Edge, even though his parents felt he was mentally insane. That scene where Lex challenges Clark if he's either with him or not, then Clark looks at his parents, and walks off was one of my favourite parts of the episodes.
That's why I've always liked the character of Clark. We all know he's a nice guy, but at the same time hes a very strong character. He's loyal, and even risks breaking certain rules, to do what he thinks he the right choice.

This episode shocked the crap out of me when I first watched it. I couldn't believe how well the episode was written. Which is why I say, please bring Kenneth Biller back. He is the man. The same guy who wrote Talisman, Insurgence & Calling. This guy should be one of the executive producers of the show. Without question my favorite writer of the series. He only wrote 4 episodes but all 4 were great.

Rewatching S3 right now I don't really get the love for this episode. It's an alright episode but I just didn't particularly care for the whole Lex gets diagnosed as crazy storyline.
In general you can sort of pinpoint the first major change in writing styles on the show to S3 and I don't think it took a turn for the better this season. I am guessing people who have a high opinion of S3 probably rate this one of the best episodes ever, but overall I just find this season a little to dark and get annoyed by the strain in all of Clark's relationships. In general the show lost some of it's funner more innocent feel of the first couple seasons
This episode shocked the crap out of me when I first watched it. I couldn't believe how well the episode was written. Which is why I say, please bring Kenneth Biller back. He is the man. I liked Insurgence alot, but Talisman and Shattered were not that "great"(although not bad either). Calling on the other hand was bottom 25ish in my book. It seems like his episodes are hit or miss for the most part

Just watched this episode from my copy of Season 2 for DVD and I find it funny when Lana tells Clark that she blames him for what just happened to her in the horse corral. That and Shattered was kind of slow.
